Eleven Seconds.

Monday, October 13, 2008 | Jeff

Sometimes it only takes that long.

Eleven seconds and a season is all but lost.

I've had enough of this defense. I've had enough of every single one of them. No matter how big the spot, they come up small. Every year. Your 2008 Chicago Bears needed to make one stop on one play and they couldn't. One stop. One play. No.

So I've had enough.

Thoughts:

1. No more hand offs to Mckie late in the game at crucial spots up the middle. Kruetz cannot get the push on guys anymore and McKie isn't getting it done getting that yard.
2. T. Harris did not play like he was on a mission from God like he said he was going to.
3. Lovie's inability to trust his special teams unit and manage the clock at the end of the game are most to blame. The decision to squib quick rather than kick it in the end zone or to Norwood to keep the clock running or at worst to give them the ball at their 20 with one play was the game changer. Sorry for the run-on, but I'm pissed.
4. The D-line is second to blame and made Matt Ryan look like Johnny Unitas. They didn't touch the rookie all day.
5. We are still right in the hunt even after the three most demoralizing losses I have ever seen. Can't get much worse and you gotta think we are growing in some ways from these losses.
6. C. Graham was the MVP in the loss. He must have had over 10 tackles again. He was all over the place and I haven't seen him miss a tackle yet.
7. Anyone who blames this loss on Orton should switch hobbies.
8. Vikings next week. We better remember what Peterson did to us last year and how many missed tackles we had trying to take him down. We made him look like Superman. We must fix that.

I asked my friend who's a Nebraska fan if it was worse to get blown out by Missouri or lose in overtime to Texas Tech. He told me it was way worse to be blown out.

I disagreed.

And after seeing that game...to have hope snatched away so late and a feeling of elation ruined...I can only say how right I was.

Last second losses suck...especially when it's a team giving up, not being overcome.

that. was. pathetic.
I just watched the most overpaid group of defenders give up 300+ passing to a rookie QB. Pathetic. squib kick? Pathetic. Coverage after squib kick? Pathetic. This is on Lovie and Babich. The two worst calls I have ever seen in the history of coaching football with :11 left ever! The only thing keeping me from semi-puking after this one was the fact that we didn't even deserve the win in the first place. why do I care again? I'm beginning to think they're not even worth the effort anymore.
Pathetic.

Long time reader, first time poster.

The most demoralizing loss this year. I thought letting Griese and...Griese beat us in OT was bad. No...this was worse. Much worse.

No pressure, not one sack. 30 pass attempts. 301 yards. 6 for 6 1st down conversions on 3rd and 9+ for Matt Ryan. Horrible...just horrible.

We kept Michael Turner in check.

Orton made up for the previous three quarters by leading us on a game winning drive.

We failed. Miserably. The coaches, our beloved D, our vaunted special teams.

Jeff, please don't hang it up, man. Your's is one of the few blogs I can stand to read.

And no, Biff. We didn't win. We lost our third heartbreaker of the season...and I highly doubt it will be our last.

It made me physically sick.

These are the same group of guys (almost to a man) who played stellar D not all that long ago with Ron Rivera leading the unit. Babich has stepped in and continued to put 11 men out there who range from just above average to flat-out terrible. And we all know there isn't a lack of talent on this unit. They just seem to be indifferent.

Bring back Chico!!! I'm tired of the complacency and mediocrity. Bear Doen!!!

Dears Bears Nation,

I have some keys to success for the 2008 Chicago Bears. If they follow these steps, this team could very well win 8-10 more games.

1. Pass the Ball More
Thought you'd never hear that one. The offensive line is better against the pass rush. Pass the ball to your great receiver. By the way, this QB looks real good. He has potential.

More tips will come throughout the week.
Stay tuned fans.

Jeff, cheer up my friend. For it is always you who lifts us up after such a miserable loss like the one we had today, maybe some of us loyal readers like myself need to return the favor.
I cannot sit here and defend the pathetic outing our D had today, as duke said we didnt deserve to win in the 1st place. But what a beautiful last drive by KO and O, I bout lost my fucking voice @ the tv after that rediculous TD pass to Rash. Those feelings were quickly replaced by feelings of dread and despair with 00:01 on the clock in FG range. But big ups to Kyle, he had a brilliant comeback effort. Forte also a was a beast.
Fuck you Matt Ryan, you played an incredible game and now these pole-smokers on nfl.com are comparing you to Brady.
Would they have completed all those passes against are starting CB's? Corey graham is solid and provides great backup relief. Where the fuck was our D-line today, I thought they were going to re-paint the field with that rook all day long.
I love reading your blog Jeff, best bears blog period(hence the name) so lift your head up. As bad as it feels now, we still have 5 games to go in our shithole-of-a-division. This is the 3rd time we've been .500 this year, here's to it being the last, fuck GB, fuck Minny, and Detroits already fucked.
Rancid, Phil, animal, pissed off, mikebdot, crown, knight, n all you other posters keep up the good posts. It ain't over. BEAR DOWN

This is an 8-8 team. Some highs, some lows. Win some you shouldn't. Lose some you shouldn't. We will be riding some other highs and way too optimistic later this year after some big wins, but this is an 8-8 team.

So, let me say something about this 8-8 team.
1. It is an improvement over last year. We expect big things so it is easy to forget that. Better QB, better RB, better WRs.
2. Next year we should have the same promising young Offenses and a better O-line.
3. this is an aging, hard to motivate, over-paid defense. Hope for Izzy, Payne, Briggs, other younger and newer guys to be the next wave. Strange as it sounds, crazy as it seems, we are rebuilding on D. Urlacher is not the same, Harris will never be the same, Brown will never be the same guy after all those reconstructions, and Tillman and Vasher are perpetually hurt. We are rebuilding. Corey Graham, McBride, Payne, Steltz, Izzy, Jamar Williams, they are the future.

Let's think positive, here's some thoughts:

This time last year the Giants looked worse than us. the time last year we looked worse than us:

1. Our three losses are a total of 8 points. Panthers and TB we were winning those games and gave them away, this one, we were fighting our way back in the whole time and shouldn't even have been in a position to win. This is where the D needs to dig within themselves (with the help of the coaches making better calls at critical times) and steal the game we shouldn't have been able to come back from.

2. Major positives was seeing Orton make a come back, knowing that Lloyd will soon be back and improve our receivers.

3. There is a possibility that Chris Williams will provide some spark and improvement on the O line even though they are playing above expectations, they can always be deeper.

4. Our wins were by a total of 47 points.

It's important for our team to get ahead early.

Problems: We are a team that thrives on turnovers, we left them on the field and we definitely didn't pressure this QB, but then when we even got a little close we were letting those receivers make major plays on some very accurate passes by Ryan.

I really want to see these guys again and show them what they missed out on, so I'm hoping by the end of the season Hotlanta squeaks in the playoffs and we can have a rematch, I had wanted to see Carolina again, but I'm over that, it's these guys. We gave them a free pass and I want them to see what it means when our D is inspired and hungry. I know our D will if they can make it past this shit.

Worst thing is seeing GB and Min win today. Fucking vikes should have lost to Detroit.

Beat Minnesota at home, go into our bye week gt healthy and rested and regroup and beat Detroit again, this is do-able.

Another positive thing is teams cant really game plan against our D because they never know what they will be facing any more than we do.

I put the blame solely on the staff by going squib kick and allowing them to steal this game. Total shiite. I was so pissed at the staff and then the D took second. More of the blame goes to the c-staff allowing them to only need one play to go for the dagger.

I blame the squib kick and Tyler Hamilton. Where was he on that last pass? You give up the deep ball to protect the underneath? With 8 seconds to go? WTF? We should have had Max Prevent out there and Hamilton took the underneath route? I don't get it? What's more, I don't get where this guy came from? He passed Tru McBride on the depth chart?
On a more positive note, we handled the modern day Jim Brown as we have all runners this year. And if Peanut and Vash had played all day, I don't see Ryan shredding us the way he did. This is the only loss where we should have lost, so it doesn't hurt as bad as TB and Carolina. It does hurt that we're 0-3 against the NFC south. Could be 6-0, could be 2-4. that's the NFL for ya. Parity, parity, parity. We just have to get up, dust ourselves off, and get ready to fight again. I for one, will never give up. Never.

Oh. I guess McBride went out with a shoulder injury and Manning went out with a hammy. Well, that answers that. This is the thing I hate about Lovie's defensive philosophy. Sure its' nice to have fast players on defense so they fly to the ball. But it sure makes our defense more prone to injury. Oh well. Bring on the Dikes.
