Saturday Round-Up

Saturday, October 4, 2008 | Jeff

Great news on Chris Williams being cleared for full practice though I don't think we'll see him on the field until the Lions come to Chicago on November 2nd. Good decision by Jerry and the organization to keep him on the roster but now they must determine if he improves the left tackle spot. If so, spare no feelings. Improve.

Bizarre article about Tommie Harris by Brad Biggs but captivating as well. Here's a piece: "Harris said in published reports he has been troubled as a devout Christian since fathering a son out of wedlock last month..." I think sometimes it's easy for football fans to lose touch with the fact that the guys on the field are actually human beings struggling with the same shit we struggled with (with infinitely more money, course). When Peanut's daughter was sick at the start of the season it was one of the first times I've ever cared for an athlete off the field. If Harris is really in trouble psychologically, it is incumbent upon the Bears to get him help in order to ultimately get the best out of him on the field.

Leave it to the always-brilliant Jeff Joniak to spell out the Bears' most significant offensive issues: "No team in the NFL has had more offensive possessions than the Bears with 53. They also have an impressive seven 10-play drives. Like the Baltimore Ravens, the Bears have not scored a touchdown on any of those seven drives, either settling for field goals or turning the ball over." Nothing to add there.

David Haugh did a wonderful job bringing up an issue I'm embarrassed to say I didn't. The Bears goalline stand Sunday night was eerily similar to the stand the Giants made at Washington last season which completely turned their season around. Sunday starts a three-game run of winnable games that I believe this club must win if they're serious about not only winning the division...but the conference as well.

Jeff, I am personally looking forward to Forte having a big game. With their run defense Forte can not only run over them but help us control time of possession and probably cut down on turnovers as well. My only real concern is our pass defense. It is not cutting it and must drastically improve if we are to be a real threat in our division and this league.

I like the positive news about Chris Williams. Hopefully the line will continue to hold up rather well without their 1st round pick at LT. If Williams can come back healthy in November, will they replace John St. Clair if he St. Clair performing well? I would think so, right? I'll tell you the impact I'd like to see would be on screen plays and in the running game, giving Forte more of an opportunity to bust a long run.

Regarding Tommie this year, he hasn't been an impact player everybody notices. In fact, Izzy Idonije and Marcus Harrison have actually made more big plays than Tommie. It's nice to know there's quality depth at D-line that can get it done. Either way, Tommie is arguably the best player on this team and the Bears need to make sure he is healthy physically and mentally, even if that means holding him out of a game, on turf, that the Bears SHOULD win, to make sure he gets his knee and his mind working at 100%.

Those statistics about the Bears offense tell me two things: 1. This Chicago Bears defense has been forcing numerous turnovers by playing their style of "bend but don't break" defense. 2. The Chicago offense has been playing their style of "drive but don't score" offense. Good for time of possession I suppose. The offense as a whole still has a long ways to go in terms of being a "good" offense. Yes the Bears made a goal line stand last Sunday, but the defense can't we forced into those type of situations week after week becuase they'll wear down. The offense needs to come through with more TDs than turnovers when presented with scoring opportunities from the defense.

As big as the Philly win was for the Bears last Sunday, I believe this game is just as important. If you considered the Philly game a "must win" then you could say the same about this one. The Lions will be the Bears' first division opponent they've faced this year and need to establish dominance over an inferior team. I couldn't agree more when you say "Sunday starts a three-game run of winnable games that I believe this club must win if they're serious about not only winning the division...but the conference as well."

The Giants' stand against Washington turned into a defining moment because New York was able to follow it up with consecutive wins. Consecutive wins are something the Bears just couldn't figure out how to put together last season. We'll find out tomorrow just how serious these Bears are about 2008.

Well the Cubs broke a lot of hearts tonight, including mine. I'm not sure I could handle it if the Bears lost this weekend as well.
