Still Crazy After All These Years

Thursday, October 16, 2008 | Jeff

Here's the thing...

Last week I essentialy said that if the Bears stopped Michael Turner, they would beat the Atlanta Falcons soundly. They did. Then they didn't. It would be very easy for me to say the same thing this week: stop Adrian Peterson, beat the Minnesota Vikings. But I won't. I won't and there's a very simple reason why: I don't believe that logic has anything to do with whether or not the Chicago Bears win.

Yes, I believe they'll stop Adrian Peterson.

Yes, I believe they'll keep Gus, Bernie and the passing game from putting up touchdowns.

Yes, I believe they'll have success against an offensive line that allowed four sacks to the Detroit Lions.

Yes, I beieve they'll exploit the Vikings secondary with their confident quarterback by spreading the field and utlizing Devin Hester over the top.

But if you're asking me if I think Lovie Kotite (well played Steve Rosenbloom) and the Broken Record Bears will win at home Sunday afternoon, I don't have a clue. I'm going to pick them in a few seconds and do so (1) confident they are the superior team and (2) without the slightest bit of confidence.

If you put this north Jersey playwright through a lie detector test and asked me if I believe the Bears can represent the conference in the Super Bowl, it'd tell you I'm telling the truth when I say "yes". I'd give the same answer if I was asked if I believed the team could finish third in the division.

The most important Bears on Sunday? Mike Brown and Kevin Payne. They need to provide coverage behind a horribly depleted secondary. If they struggle...well...let's hope they score this week with the clock showing 0:00.

Your 2008 Chicago Bears 20, Minnesota Vikings 17.

FIRST,

The Bears have a chance to do what what the SF 49rs did for years.

Take over a weak division and carry it through to the Super Bowl.

They need to get out of their heads and stop missing opportunities, take an early lead and don't sit on it. maintain the first downs and keep the Vikings off the field.

Now that the Lions gave up their supposed star player (bitch that he was) we just need to get by these vikes, get healthy in the secondary during the bye and beat the Lions even worse than last game with more use of the running game and this will be Kevin Jones throw down party right?

Go Bears!

Sausage I think it a lil premature to write off Hester as a WR/KR

He hasen't played a full season as a WR,I know he hasen't return a kickoff/punt yet.But Devin isn't a secret anymore for returns.

As a WR he has more chance to put the ball in the endzone vs as a KR,As a WR he only has to face DB an a safety vs as a KR he has to get by 11 guys on the field.

Remember Devin had a key 3rd down catch that set up the Davis TD catch last week. Will he develop into a elite WR the jury out but he is progressing.

The Lloyd injury has given Hester more chances to be on the field,This can only help him instead of the spot duty he was getting before.

For the first time in over 20 years, I am going to write a Christmas letter this year; not to Santa though, to Brian Urlacher. I think it will go like this:

Dear Mr. Urlacher,
I don't think your too old to play football at a high level, do you? It seems that yourself and Mr. Harris have your future well in hand so now you go out and give a mediocre effort without concern. I watched a game last year, my first Bear's game on Dec 23rd 2007; your were amazing. You were jumping around the whole game like some freshman in high school who finally got to go in. Your were flying to the ball and you even got a Favre pick that you took to the house.
I know you won't get huge plays every game, but you can try that hard every game. You can want it that much every game. In fact, the age should be making you want it even more. I want you and Tommie to try every game. To finish plays, shed blocks, and harass RBs and QBs until they stop trying. That's it, that's what I want for Christmas, no necessary playoff spot or SB win; just play with your heart, like you were a kid again and see what happens around you.

Oh yeah, and I hope Briggs or K. Payne drop Berrian. I mean just totally hit him so hard that he's wobbly getting back up. It should be one of those hits where he attempts to get back up and is so wobbly that he falls back down.

This hit would have to force him to either: A) drop the ball, something he's quite talented at or B) fumble it, where either Mike Brown picks it up and runs it back for 6.

That's what I want this Sunday. And a solid final 11 seconds.

I have faith still. It begins to disappear after games like Tampa and Atlanta but it's still there. The defense will show up and hit FreROTTEN until Jackson is called back into duty. Peterson will blow out his knee trying to escape Dusty D. (anybody else notice the resemblance to Dvorcek and the Vikings mascot, it's creepy). My prediction is Bears 24 VikeQueens 10.

It's true...how can any of us expect anything from this team at this point? All I know is that even if the Bears have a two touchdown lead in the 4th quarter...I still won't be comfortable.

Keys this week will be limited the impact of the Viking's AP (duh) and making plays in the passing game. It wouldn't hurt if the defense created two or more turnovers either. Not to mention, Skunk hasn't really been all that close to breaking one this year...C'mon Devin, break one for us.

One silver lining is this. If we win, we will be at least tied for the division title heading in to a perfectly timed bye week. (let's get some guys back healthy and ready to go)

With reference to Hesters production on KR's & PR's it seems as though the special teams blocking is not as good and he doesn't have the gaps that were there before. Time and time again he has 6 or 7 guys in his face and is forced out of bounds where before he would have a gap or two to cut up the field. There are a lot more opportunities for touches on offense so I think in the long run it will be a smart move.

#12 Bearman on the Sangamon said . . .

Man, don't write off Hester. I think Dave Toub has a point, the media expects too much out of him...it's evident in the games when he returns the ball to the 45 yard line and the announcers are disappointed. I think one of the reason why he hasn't scored on returns is the lack of Brenden Ayanbadejo. He has scored 13 (I think) touchdowns on special teams when Ayanbadejo was blocking for him...and 0 since Ayanbadejo became a Raven.

I don't know if he's the best reciever on the team, I'm impressed with Lloyd...and Booker ain't bad either..."What the Lester Hayes!"...But, Hester was a shitty shitty ass Cornerback, and is performing quite well as a wideout. No, I think it was an excellent decision to put him on offense. He remains a return threat...and part of the reason he hasn't returned as well is because nobody wants to kick directly to him. I'd say he is the most powerful offensive weapon on that team.

Let's not forget. Hester was playing like two whole levels above the other best return men in the history of the game. In two seasons he's two t.d.s away from breaking Mitchell's t.d. return record. He couldn't keep up that pace forever. He would have finished his career with like 30+ return td.s and that's not going to happen. Let's just be patient with Hester. Personally, I like that he's on the field more. Eventually, he will be a very good receiver and will always be a great return man.

Bearman on the Sangamon - While Hester is becoming an offensive force as a WR, he's hardly the most important member of the offense. Not while KO and Forte are playing at their present levels. Not to mention John St. Clair - he's been a rock at LT on passing downs.

Hey Ronaldo, Cool Breeze was the nickname I'd tried to bestow on Kyle! Forte, to me, is way too much the work horse and powerful warrior to get that nickname. But I appreciate the continued efforts to name him!

Hester almost broke the one where he got to the 50. I'm pretty sure it's more about worse coverage than any decline of Hester, plus they are game planning him better, which was to be expected. He certainly is a way better receiver than corner, and if he can develop hands to go along with what are apparently pretty doggone good routes he could be great. I've already been surprised by his productivity, although I admit my expectations were very low.

Still don't think they're using him in all the right ways - should be some direct snap stuff, and if we can just hit him the right time on a slant (you know the kind, the ones we always seem to get burned on) I'm still expecting a time where it's just WHOOSH and he's past everybody. That will be SWEET when it happens. And a runback will return - maybe not 7 in a season, but he'll get at least 2-3 before it's over.

Bottom line is, results are results, and we're getting great field position seemingly every time. He's worth it for that.

St. John has been heaven-sent for us this year - really proud of that dude. I hope he's reading.

Another note...can you believe we still have not won consecutive games? The rollercoaster this team has been putting me through since the 2nd week of 2007 is almost too much to handle...being shitty is one thing but being shitty, good, shitty, good, shitty, good for a year and a half is too much to take.

I 100% disagree with Sausage...Hester is developing better than I even thought as a WR and I look for him to be a solid #1 by the end of the year. Orton to Hester could be the best hook up we have ever seen in this city. I know that is not that bold of a statement but still...

I'm a little concerned by all the close predictions on the site today. Honestly guys, if this game is that close then the bears have more problems then we thought.
The Minnesota Vikings are flat out terrible. I live in the MN media market and hear prattle about this team all day. They are vastly over-rated in every respect. Despite the hype about the greatest O-Line in history, they have exactly two lineman that can block. Both Tackles suck. They have one reciever, no real pass rush and a passive secondary. And a pathetically dumb coach and offensive system.
They basically are the Bears team of 2000 or 2002. Think none yard passes, lots of them. And a D that can stop the run because it's fat.
The Bears should absolutely crush this team if this year's Bears are any good. The score for this game SHOULD be 34-7.

I totally think the Bears should jump on the 'WildCat' bandwagon. I think with the skill players that we have on this team it could really work great. Of course I've never seen Matt Forte throw a pass.

But picture it.

The QB? Matt Forte.

The eligible receivers? Devin Hester, Marty Booker, Kyle Orton, Desmond Clark, Garrett Wolfe

Direct snap to Matt Forte, fake an end-around to Hester. Forte sells the run to the right and POW! TD pass to Kyle Orton!!!!

That sounds fun doesn't it?

I really want to see carries by Wolfe this week. Small as he is, this kid's a playmaker. I loved him @ NIU. I actually kinda wanna see KJ used just about as much as Forte in this one with Wolfe coming in every once in a while. Let's just see which one of the three will have a good day against these fools.

John St. Clair's List
1. Dwight Freeney. Check.
2. Julius Peppers. Check.
3. Gaines Adams. Check.
4. Trent Cole. Check.
5. Some asshole from Detroit. Check.
6. John Abraham. Check.
7. Jared Allen....Intriguing.

And then hopefully Chris Williams comes in and invigorates our line straight to the upper echelon of offensive lines.

Honestly, I don't see a reason NOT to have that be a package available to run when we need a big score. Like when we just got a turnover at the 20 yard line or something and a field goal is a near given. But, in all seriousness, a turnover is much more likely with Hester handling the ball running through the line of scrimmage. He doesn't have the surest hands in the world when he is actually tackled.

Here are two things our coaching staff need to do to win:

1. Stop the run.
2. Fatigue their front four.

I would no huddle the fat bastards to death (Indy game) to control the tempo, and dissect their weak linebackers. This should be a game all about Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen. Between them, I hope to see 15+ touches, and Stache (still the best Forte nickname) will turn out another 100 yard game mostly in the 4th quarter as we grind the fat bastards into the dirt.

On D - we need to stop AP. Gus Frerotte is not accurate when forced into a 3 step drop mode so their passing plays will be telegraphed when he is in a shotgun formation. Babich Patch can control this by allowing BU to audible blitzes when necessary...

Bears 34 Vikings 9

Viva, that was STRONG brother! Loved the Lovie Factor Downward Adjustment (let's be nice and call it Rightsizing instead!)

Now you know I respect you but the Stache nickname needs supporting documentation as to why that's so great for our boy Ft. Mattay (I guess that's still my favorite, although not so much that I want it to stick). Stache sounds a little porn star like, kind of like the unfortunate Sex Cannon nickname that poor Rex got.

I think the "Vikings always play us tough" deal is more based on Rollerdome games. You get out of there with a 3 point win you've done good, no matter the state of the two teams. At Soldier I think (and hope) our strength carries us away from them.

Has Urlacher ever been able to audible blitzes? I wonder. But I like your game plan Viva. I'd love to see a breakout game by Urlacher. Urlacher FTW, that was a great letter to Brian. I second it.

If Williams gets worked in, what happens to our MVP on the line, St. John? Beekman's been doing pretty good too. How about Beekman at center, St. John at left guard and Williams at left tackle, and Mr. Currently Overrrated gets to sit his ass down? He'll block about as many on the bench as he's doing on the field right now. Yeah that's you Kreutz, that's who I'm talking about.

Should be: Bears 31 Vikings 17
Lovie Rightsizing: Bears 21 Vikings 20

Yeah isn't it fuckin crazy that we have to be more worried about O-Line Kruetz fucking up than John St. Clair. What a strange football season.

Well, MikeBDot, it's hard to take offense to things on the internet. I just saw an opportunity for a joke. But your point on Hester is why I like Forte taking the direct snap, using Hester as more of a decoy for the situation, like Ronnie faking to Ricky Williams a bunch. Anything we do out of this formation could probably work if well practiced because NO ONE's gonna expect it from RT. Let's just start practicing wildcat plays now and bust 'em out for the LIONs game. I mean it's worth a shot...The Lions, dude.

October 17, 2008

#35 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Luke: I think the wildcat takes more of a commitment, as in throw at the playbook and lets do this because we have nothing to lose. While some of the plays could be thrown into a normal playbook, they would be pretty telegraphed because you don't have 5 other plays that set up the same way.

The Bears have a system, like it or not, they also have a very real threat at QB who knows that system well enough to adjust plays at the line. They are supposed to be playoff contenders, and weren't awful last season , barely below 500.

Miami, whole different ball of wax. They got a facelift, brought in a new playcaller, new coach, a washed up never was QB, a pair of high caliber RBs, and a bunch of no name WRs. They could bring in a completely new system that is essentially 60% misdirection 40% chaos; and see what happens. Record wise, what they won 1 or 2 games last year, they had absolutely nothing to lose.

So the Bears could institute some plays but it is kind of like two years ago when Hester would line up at WR, omg I wonder if it's gonna be a reverse. I mean could you see Orton lining up at WR, who are we fooling. Not to mention as the season wears on I would expect the better coached teams, like NE to start tearing apart that Wildcat crap; it's flash in the pan success imho.

That Paul Simon song was playing on my computer as I went to Da Blog today. Spooky.

I frankly don't like our chances against the Vikings. Essentially lost amid our unbelievable last-second meltdown against the Falcons was that they completely shredded our pass defense, and, specifically, our pass defense SCHEME. It shouldn't be significantly EASIER to pass when the other team knows you're going to, and yet that's what kept happening. Ryan converted 3rd and 10 after 3rd and 17 after 3rd and whatever, to the endless adulation of the announcers. Of course the last pass of the game, to that area of the field, was exactly what the doctor ordered. The announcers loved it, but no QB, Hall of Famer or promising rookie or whoever, should have that easy a time on obvious passing downs.

One salient point (among many terrible ones) made by the announcers in the game was that the slant was working wonders for both teams, but especially the Falcons, even on 3rd and 10 or more, when usually it's a 7-8 yard play. However, the Falcons kept getting double-digit yardage on it because THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD WAS WIDE FUCKING OPEN ON EVERY GODDAMN PASSING PLAY.

I just don't understand how Babich can look himself in the mirror every week knowing that there is a giant fucking gaping hole in the defense on every obvious passing down. The irony, of course, was that the last play of the game was one of the few times the Falcons threw to the sideline, and one of the few times the Bears left it undefended, even though that was the only place they COULD throw it.

Anyway, sure, Gus Frerotte is a crappy QB, and they have crappy receivers, but even if we hold down AP like we did with Turner last week, any reasonably competent QB can fire 15-yard strikes to the middle of the field on 3rd and 10. No pressure on the QB + no defenders in the middle of the field = big passing yards for Bears' opponents. Until they fix it, they're not going anywhere.

October 17, 2008

#39 Urlacher FTW said . . .

I am undecided on the Williams thing animal. Not saying St. Clair hasn't done a great job at tackle; just if sliding him to guard and putting the rook at tackle will make the line as good or better at pass protection, I think St. Clair could move people much better in run blocking than Beekman at guard. Our line has plain stunk up the field in run blocking since week 2.
St. Clair is a natural guard and has much better size than Beekman. Now the downside is the Beekman is playing very strong and I'd hate to take away his experience as he looks like a definate future center/guard. But we need to field the best line we can right now and worry about the future later. So if sliding Beekman out makes us better then I say we should do it as soon as Williams is able; still it should take nothing away from the fact that St. Clair has done great, just making the unit as a whole better.

Not sure the Bears will be able to stop the run this week. Peterson will hurt us BAD! So far we have shut down opposing RB's but remember...it's the Bears and they manage to mess something up new each week.

The problem with Minnesota is they can't score in the red zone. If we can stop them on 3rd down and pressure the QB we'll be fine. Peterson has been fumbling all over the place lately so turnovers will be plentiful.

Tommie "the Turd" Harris needs to show up or sit his fat ass down cause this is the best O-line in the league we are facing and he isn't exactly drawing double teams anymore! Mybe he can just fall down and Peterson will trip over his fat belly! Ha! I like Tommy but he needs to seriously man the fuck up!

Out of the 32 teams, 21 are either 3 or 4 win teams; thats 66% of the league. In the NFC 3 out of the 4 divisions have a tie for the lead (not giving NY a win for the bye). I mean wow, I don't remember anytime when there hasn't been 2 or 3 run away teams in each conference by this time in a season. I would not move St Clair now unless I was 100 percent convinced that Williams will UPGRADE the LT position. If anything, Williams may be more of an upgrade on the right side.

Before I start my suspension however, I do agree that the Wildcat would be an intersting wrinkle...but why not direct snap to Booker? If I remember correctly (and it's not likely based on recent history) didn't he play QB in H.S and is he not our "4th" QB? He is big enough not to cough it up on contact and he can throw well enough to add the threat of a pass.

I will be in the corner punishing myself for the last post....too bad I could not forget something like Harbaugh's audible pick six against Minnesota rather than something good like the Bears winning back to back games.
