Your 2008 Chicago Bears

vs.

Minnesota Vikings

I’d like to see Ron Turner dial it up and toss it around. Throw on first down. If you try and push the Williams sisters off the ball, you’ll be in 2nd and long all day.

I’d like to see blitzing but not just for blitzing's sake. Come on the edges to help eliminate the quick slants underneath. The Vikes would be crazy not to attack the corners.

I’d like to see anger…real anger…from everybody. Put a little extra on the hits over the middle. Throw some extra force behind the blocks up front. Run back to huddles. Rev up the crowd. This is the kind of game where I want my football team to PLAY VIOLENT.

Win.

And to win, we need Mr. Reliable.

Right on, Jeff!

The whole defense needs to play angry and shut the Vikings Offense down. I want to see multiple sacks and turnovers. Like Lovie, I'm surprised when there are no sacks. The difference is that I get unhappy when it happens.

But just to be safe, the offense needs to score more than Luke's prediction. In addition, we need KO to throw a second and third TD, Forte to run one in and Gould should kick a couple of FGs. Let's give the punter the day off while keeping the Vike offense on the sideline. Right now, the defense doesn't have a lot of credibility without a lead of at least 14.

Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

Time to take care of business today.

Defense:

1. Stop the run

2. Sack the QB

3. Create turnovers

Offense:

1. Run the ball and eat up clock

2. Score in the red zone

3. Make the big play

There teams are going to beat the hell outta each other, whichever plays more physically and wins the battle of the trenches is going to come out on top today. Time to repay this bitter division rival for sweeping both games last year, Bear down and finish strong.

There are 2 sites I check daily for Bears stuff: This one, and Kevin Seifert's NFC North Blog on ESPN.

Jeff does it up right for the fans here - I left the official team site's message boards a year ago and haven't missed it one wit.

I'll assume playing angry doesn't include Peanut throwing a fit at the wrong moment...and I'd like to see Forte hit the Vikings O'line in the mouth all day, so the announcers are fumbling all over themselves trying to rewrite their script about Petersen doing that to us.

Even though #54 has led this D, this team for several years now this season so far he is reminding me a lot more another Brian that used to play for us. So far he's been just a half step behind to make the real plays he was capable of in previous years.

Brian Cox, remember him... except without the mouth.

Come on BU and MB lets see some of the old stuff man!

October 19, 2008

#13 Shady said . . .

With our starting CBs out, the front four of the defense needs to step up and get after Gus all day. This also might be the game where the offense has to put the D on their shoulders and really step up and make big plays.

With Vash out today, I wouldn't be surprised to see C. Graham start in place of Vasher when he finally deems himself healthy to play. Vash is not having his best year by any means.

The defense has no heart. There is no emotion. None. 2005...2006 there was emotion. At Indy there was emotion. But it's just gone. They're deflated. There is NO good pressure on Ferrotte. To give them a little credit...they are stopping Peterson better than on the first drive.

If you sack Gus Ferrotte twice before the end of the half and restrict Peterson and Taylor to minimal gains, this one's in the bag. The Bears offense has found direction and are playing with heart for the first time since....the Neil Anderson Era? But the defense is the worst it has been in 4 years.

Maybe Im wrong, havent seen the whole game, looks like very little pressure on the QB and whats up with what looks like Blitz, but never seems to really be a blitz, there better be some adjustments in the second half. marty needs a circus catch TD to make up for those two dropped TDs. Another drop on an eas pass and he needs to ride some wood.

October 19, 2008

#52 Bearman on the Sangamon said . . .

I say again, NO EMOTION. That last scoring drive by Minnesota was a joke. Ogunleye and Harris line up in the neutral zone? Come on... Harris needs a drastic pay cut, he has 5 tackles in 5 games that he's played.

I love Marty Booker and nothing will ever change that, but come the fuck on, man! You made The Catch III in Detroit and yet you've dropped two in the endzone, so far?!

I don't know what is up with this defense. I'm kept awake at night by it. Lovie Smith is supposed to be a defensive genious, contributer to the developement of the Tampa 2 scheme. Yet his and his cronie Bob Babich have done nothing to improve the defense since February 4, 2007. Disgusting.

A couple observations:

1) The defense we've known and loved in recent years appears to be no more. They can't even line up on the right side of the ball for Christ's sake, let alone stop the high octane passing game of... Gus Frerotte and Vicanthe Shiancoe. I don't care who's injured—giving up 24 points, 222 yards, and 17 first downs in one half is not acceptable.

2) The Bears get off the bus... in shotgun. The run game is languishing. I don't know who's to blame, but IMO it's bad news. Feel good about Kyle's play all you want. We don't run, we don't win.I know this is Minny's defense, but it feels like a trend to me. After averaging about 33 rushes per game in our first four, we've dropped to 24 per game in the last two, and just 6 in the first half of this game... that worries me.

I'll admit, I wasn't an Orton supporter in the offseason, but he's proven himself to be a solid QB, and I don't think there's much question anymore that he's the better option.

It is amazing how Forte can seemingly be shut down but still help us win. He is sneaky effective. I have him on my FFL team, and he has appeared to do nothing today but has 11 points.

Heres a thought, Kyles numbers (including fantasy) are number one for the whole NFL after the first set of games. Had Booker not dropped those two TDs he would be untouchable today...

Turn overs, special teams and solid offense win this game today, take a look at the time of possession and our secondary is so depleted, good for the youth getting some game time experience. Hope Vasher and Tillman come on strong upon their return and that Tommie will be hungry now that he got a sack, also hope those turnovers werent an anomaly...

Go Bears! Im very excited about Kyle, still calling for Rex to be let go is crazy, you never know if KO will get hurt. So far he is Iron man and he just keeps getting better.

When they do the you tube videos on kyles season it should be done to that song, Iron Man!! keep it up KO lead this team!

Another thing, when Lloyd comes back healthy he will be pleasantly surprized at KOs improved accuracy since the first few games, imagine how much better Lloyd will be we with better passes that he doesnt have to perform circus stunts for.

Oh yea I said go Bears!

Need to get healthy and we'll be 5-3 heading into a big game against Tennesee, and I really think the Bears acan beat them, one at a time though.

I am incredibly happy with the play of the offense and in particular Kyle Orton, and the tight ends. Great game, and great bounce back for Booker.
But having said that, the defense is pathetic. There is no way to say it other then that. The Viking offense is one of the worst in the entire league, they are mediocre at every position except running back and a couple positions on the line. I know there were injuries but still, that is inexcusable.
How about that non-blitz on fourth and sixteen? Disgusting.
We basically won this game by out-viking, the vikings. Two cheap touchdowns on special teams really saved the day.
Lovie Smith should fire Babich ASAP and assume the defensive calls for the rest of the season. At that point several other quality coaches will be available at that point as long-term replacements.

Wow.
This team is destined to drive us nuts all year. Before I get caught up in the euphoria, I will still be a downer and say we are an 8-8 team. Mainly because of the defense and coaching deficiencies. 9-7 would be great and maybe get us into the playoffs. The best we could possibly do is 10-6, which would mean we overachieve and pull out more tough close games like this rather than blowing them like the 3 we lost.
Forte had another sneaky effective game.

The silver lining, again, is our youngsters thrust into the game and playing well at times. Cory Graham, McBride, Steltz and my boy Bowman all have potential to take over starting spots in the future.

Yes, we do have a few more like Bowman up here- surprisingly, we have pretty good HS football. For a small population base, we put some dudes in the NFL each year. Colledge in GB and Kuper in Denver are both O-linemen from AK.

Finally, KO. KO to GO has such a nice balance and ring to it. Love seeing it increase each week. Especially since I now have both on my FFL team, along with Forte.

For future reference, if you see some name including "BOWMAN" its me.
Like Start Bowman
Ill be working on that.

I live in Tampa and just have to ask, how the fuck are the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series? 200-1 were the odds on them to start the season. At least its not NY or Boston.

Rest and Heal Bears!! 2 weeks. Do not overlook the Lions. Solid trouncing again.

I'm still confused how a team can have 4 picks and still give up 41 points. It doesn't make sense. The D=line was again less than stellar and the linebackers were also lacking in coverage. I just don't know how to feel. On one hand I feel good about a win and a solid offensive performance, on the other I can't help but feel disgusted by the defense again. Here's to the bye week, if we come back healthy and still blow on defense I will want Babich's job eliminated.

What a weird win. My son asked me during the game if I was even going to be happy if we won this thing, and I had to say, not really. Then reality hit, we won and I was happy.

But I'm very very concerned. Maybe I shouldn't be - with the offense looking this good and teams still giving us the ball every time at the 40, we're looking like the Rams of Warner days or the Colts pre-D. But is this Chicago Bears football?

I'm terribly concerned about the defense. Terribly. We don't have an effective pass rush, and our linebackers don't cover well. We ARE good at stopping the run this year, but we can't stop the pass to save our life. With no effective pressure on the QB, any decent QB can look great against us.

Tommie on the downside? How could that happen? Maybe a little overrated to begin with? Brian definitely on the downside? Mike Brown PAST the downside? Vasher and Tillman are great but can't stay on the field (especially Vasher - I'm getting pretty sick of this shit from him). Ogunleye on the downside?

Yes there are upsides, just not from the people/positions we thought. Alex Brown, yes we expected this, and he's delivering, especially against the run. Payne, you're a godsend. Young corners look better than expected, needed because of the brittlemen. (I sound a little bitter here, and I really don't mean it toward the great Peanut - sorry).

Briggs still bringing it even if making some mistakes in coverage. Still loving Izzy and Dusty on the inside, but if they were playing yesterday, didn't really see them.

I'll post again with a positive ode to our now incredible offense, and the co-MVPS -

Cool Breeze Kyle and Where-the-hell-has-he-been-hiding RON TURNER! You get the game ball buddy! Thanks for calling a game which got us 34 offensive points - a lot due to your creative playcalling! Thanks for finally allowing the tight ends to morph into what they should have become for us - Tea Time, especially KO to GO (love that one! don't say the initials, say the words)! Thanks for not just slamming Forte in their nearly inpenetrable from line - just because the Bears get off the bus running! Thanks for devising an audibling system where Kyle can be at his best! Sorry for everything, again!

(Can you believe I'm almost ready to say fire Babich Patch and Sluggy Smith and KEEP RT? With some new defensive guru who does a better job than dese guys? I'm almost there!)

STILL VERY HAPPY ABOUT THE NON-BEAR-LIKE WIN - THANKS BEARS!

(bye week firing would be excellent - Sluggy go ahead and fire your friend BP and become the interim D coordinator - let's see what YOU got - unless we're already seeing it)

BEAR DOWN AMERICA

P.S. there have been no posters calling for Rex or even dumping on Kyle for several games now - and how could you, really? So we don't have to keep flailing that one. Let's just try to learn how high is high - I can't really imagine him playing better than he did in that game, so we'll probably have a letdown, but this kid just seems to get better and better - and also

HOW ABOUT THAT FREAKING LINE???

CAN I HAVE SOME BIG UPS FOR THESE HEROES????

(okay they can't run block for shit but we can't have everything, right?)

I WOULD like to hear from the sadly vacated PO'd - not to bust on him, he's a blog friend, just to learn if he's come all the way there with Kyle. PO'd are you out there?

First, the GOOD NEWS: Kyle Orton running the "hurry up" looks more like Peyton Manning than Peyton Manning does these days. Once again, he hit at least SEVEN different receivers. YAY, somebody shut down OUR running game and we beat THEM anyway. (See Tampa and Atlanta losses). Even when he doesn't have a big game running the ball, Matt Forte is a positive factor as a receiver and blocker.Marty Booker, don't you realize you aren't fast enough to run thru the entire Viking Defense? Way to put the SPECIAL in SPECIAL TEAMS!
and the bye week couldn't be coming at a better time , could it? The BAD NEWS: Poor Kyle, he should have been credited with 4 TD passes and possibly 5 but Booker dropped TWO in the endzone (Marty, you HAVE to catch ONE of those!) and Clark turned another into a fumble recovery for Rashied. D-Line: feel free to put pressure on the passer BEFORE the last drive of the game. Bottom line: Thanks, Vikings, we'll take it! Enjoy the Brad Childress farewell tour!

Let's get something straight here. Our special teams is horrible. The Vikings gave us 14 points on special teams by being terrible, not by the Bears playing well.

That being said, I feel that everyone is understating how well our offense played. We don't have a strong enough offensive line to run the ball effectively against this front four. This is why Ron Turner did a great job. Last week, we kept trying to jam the ball up the middle and its become more and more clear that we just don't have good enough OL to do so. Forte is having much more success running off tackle, counters, and on sweeps. So Turner stopped being stubborn and used our stengths to attack the Vikes weakness. I loved the gameplan and the play of our QB.

Now we just need to use the same theory on Defense.

Serious question here: Does a QB get credit for a touchdown pass on a hook and ladder play? I never considered that question until Kyle didn't get credit for a TD pass to Clark. I suppose that's "fair" since the rules are the same for everyone, but still, seems strange that a lateral play wouldn't give credit to a QB who has to execute the play too. Oh well, he got the yards I guess.

We only had two drives that were crappy. The last two drives were all on Turner. We should have just run the same types of plays that we ran for the entire game. I'm sick of this "hey, let's just get one first down, let's run every single play as a designed play to the first down marker". Are you fucking kidding me? If you call a pass play, you have to go past the first down marker in case your receiver needs to work his way back to the QB. I know the Colts aren't playing that well this year, but they seem to be the only team that understands this. You know how madden always says you have to run a route to get to the marker? Fuck that noise. You run all sorts of different routes three yards past the marker. Occasionally you hit a wide open guy underneath that actually makes a linebacker or two miss (like pretty much every single third down attempt that has been converted against us this entire season). It's pretty simple, Turner has no fucking clue how to run an offense with under 10 minutes to play protecting a lead. Of course, it doesn't help that our O-line is pushed around like a collective rag-doll when attempting to run the football to kill the clock. They need to practice THAT during the week.

Overall though, I'm happy with the offense and special teams. I'm still amazed that we scored so many points. I was also thinking about this whole "squib kick" thing (against us). If we get the ball at the 45 or 50 every time, even if we score, it doesn't take nearly as much time off the clock. I think this is why the Colts D of a few years ago sucked so bad. Their offense was always on and off the field quickly. It's the same logic I used when thinking that Devin was really hurting our D, just a little bit because the D is back on the field immediately.

Also could be why we're always injured...

Brad: How do you contend that our ST was horrible? Seriously, what was your issue with them? The blocked field goal that was just a sea of arms (seriously, just a good play by the Vikings)? They're decent on kickoffs (except for a single play against Atlanta which should have been a fucking block in the back), punt coverage (we lead the league in punts downed inside the 20), punt returns (other teams are literally kicking the ball straight up and towards the sidelines, I can't find an "average punt yardage for other team" statistic but I would guess we're close to the lowest), on field goals we are 13 of 15, with the one that was blocked and the other Gould just missing. What do you want from those guys? Gould is finally putting the ball in the endzone on kickoffs. We're like 7th in the league in kickoff distance and thus why our return distance is fairly high. If you subtract average return from average kickoff length we're like 11th. The only place we're not getting bang for our buck right now is punt returns. I will sacrifice that any day for field position.

On nfl.com it only lists us as having one punt block, but didn't we have one earlier in the season?

I did rip KO earlier in the season after the second game, and must admit how woefully wrong that was. Orton is stepping up and establishing himself in a way I dont think anyone could have predicted.
