Sometimes you just have to take the win and get ready for the Tennessee Titans. That's how I'm approaching this hapless first half performance that was punctuated by the injury to our emerging franchise quarterback. Take the win and get ready for the Tennessee Titans. I'm also approaching in this manner because my body is worn out by five terrific days spent throughout the American southeast and the city of New Orleans.
Ten quick ones...more tomorrow.
1. Call me crazy but I don't think Kyle Orton is going to play any time soon.
2. That second half performance by Matt Forte - when his team desperately needed it - is the reason I think the Double Deuce is going to a star for a long time.
3. Fix the field. That was a tragedy.
4. So is the deal that we CAN'T stop both the pass and the run? There are two Packers games and a Saints game left on the schedule. All three are definite losses should this not get fixed.
5. Good to see Tommie Harris look like a force up the middle.
6. When we look back at 2008, two terrific defensive plays may have saved the season: Lance Briggs' tackle and fumble recovery & Craig Steltz picking off a ball on the goal line.
7. Good for Rex Grossman. He held his own in a difficult situation in front of a fan base that wants his head. What's his reward? A likely start against the best unit in the league.
8. Nathan Vasher might just need to get the hell off the field. He looked lost all game long. It's okay for a corner to allow a completion but not behind him in the endzone and not without attempting to make a tackle.
9. Brad Maynard's punt had the ring of Charles Tillman's personal foul and Lovie Smith's squib kick...I just thought the game was over. Lance Briggs disagreed.
10. We'll know a lot about the Chicago Bears in seven days.
See ya tomorrow...

#8 zmac said . . .I think we can still win the game. The Sex Cannon came into a tough situation and did great. Some of his missed deep balls came from a lack of experience over the past 9 weeks with the starters. Give the Cannon a week to get ready and he will be. He is in a contract year, and the fan base and front office don't want him back. He has to look at the next 4 weeks as his audition for some other team in this league. Titans, Packers, and Rams are up. If we can get 2/3 with Rex, you have to consider this a win. If the injury is 4 weeks like the first works out are saying, then so be it. Rex is our qb1 and it's time to get behind him.

I think we have a good shot still against the Titans once Rex gets some practice wit the first team. No way does he turn the ball over 5 times. We g=have to pound the ball right back at the Titans with Forte, and maybe sprinkle in some Garret Wolfe.

I felt just terrible for Orton on that play; which by the way was a total cheap shot!! Orton was on the ground out of bounds and the guy jumped on him. Cheap. But the look on Kyle's face told the story it looked extremely painful, and you had to figure he'd be out for a long time. But right now it looks like a few games anyway but not the season.
I have to admit though that I was excited to see Rex get a chance to come in and play. I still feel overall he got a raw deal in Chicago, and I want him to get a chance to write a better finish to his career with the Bears.
He came through and lead to the team to a come from behind victory. I'm so happy for Rex Grossman.

Quit talking about 5 Grossman turnovers against Tennessee. Quit booing him at home. My God. I actually wish they were playing in Nashville next week so I wouldn't have to hear the bullshit booing every time he throws an incompletion. That PISSES me of like no other.
His lone turnover of the day was on a tipped pass...not a infamous misjudgement, misread, or miscalculation which we had all grown quite accustomed to and accepted as part of the way Chicago Bears football was played.
Why don't we start rooting for Grossman, cause guess what, Rex is our quarterback.

#20 Bearman on the Sangamon said . . .Holy crap! A month without a QB. Well at least Grossman didn't screw up as bad as he could have. A 49 QB rating, thank the football gods we have Forte! Bad thing is, this could turn in to last year all over real fast. Yes, I'm thankful we have a backup that knows the system but the fact is he is an inconsistent, turnover prone, and injury prone player. We are one glass joe Grossman sack away from a starting rookie QB. Now it appears he has lost his touch on the deep ball which was his saving grace. I really hope Grossman can hold the ship steady until Orton is healthy but I have serious concerns everytime Rex drops to pass.

KO please get well soon.
Does anybody besides me think we turned a sure all pro and HOF return man into a "good" receiver. Mbdot makes a good point with the stats about field position but I wonder how it will look at the end of the season. I'm ready to predict DH will not return one for a TD this year.

@MinnesotaThe bright side? KO returns for 3 straight home games vs. Jax, NO and the Pack, then finish with lowly Houston. If KO can return to form quickly and win 3 of those 4, we can over achieve at 9-7 and perhaps make the playoffs in a weak NFC. There is still light. Still hope. It got slimmer with Rex taking over, but there is hope.

#25 zmac said . . .It would be difficult to say that Rex was not in any way affected by the incredibly negative reactions to his inconsistent play. Not to say that he didn't earn said reactions.
However, I believe (because I have to) that he is bound to do better this time around, because of two simple reasons that are connected:
1. There's no backup QB breathing down his neck, unlike every start he's had since '06.
2. The fans, knowing the lack of a viable backup option, will be behind him and not boo his every crappy move.#2 is moot if he throws a couple of his typical Rex picks, but I think he'll get a little more leeway from the fans, and with a much better running back (did you SEE Forte today? Good Lord) behind him, he has the chance to do well.
The Titans aren't a terrible matchup for the Bears, because their offensive strength lies in their rushing attack, and their defensive prowess is due to straight-up execution. The Bears' D has been much better against the run in recent weeks (see Turner, Michael) than against the pass (see Ryan, Matt or even Orlovsky, Dan). I would fear much more for Rex's life and safety if he were facing a team with an elaborate defensive scheme, like a Philly or a New York Giants. The Titans play straight up, and while their defense is exceptional, it's not exotic with a lot of disguised blitzes and coverages, which would probably confuse the shit out of Rex and lead to Animal's predicted 5 turnovers.
I'm going to go on record and predict a Bears' upset, handing the Titans their first loss of the season, 17-13. Hester gets his first return for a TD, Forte rushes for 60 tough yards, adds on 50 receiving yards and a score, Grossman goes 15-29, 147, 1 INT. Bears remain in first place.

#26 Phil from SATX said . . .jesus amimal, step back from the ledge... it was only a few months ago that Orton was the biggest question mark in the world. You could be a little less pessimistic about our future. Rex did fine when he came in. He came in cold and didnt make any mistakes and we won the game. i think orton is back in after 3 games and we go 2-1 while he is out. Its not like Orton was cutting up the lions defense before he went out. I think we all need to relax and remember we have a capable back up. I also think its a bit early to say Rex lost his touch on the deep ball after he threw one deep pass. He hasnt thrown a pass all year before today. Give the guy a chance.
November 3, 2008
#27 Tom said . . .If you're predicting that the home Bear fans will give Rex a break because he's the only choice out there, you don't know home Bear fans. Simply put, they're assholes. They've been assholes for the last 20 years or so, maybe longer. Ever sit in Soldier Field and listen to them? I swear we have the worst fans in the NFL. There may be fans with less spirit around (like the Cardinals in AZ, who are really Cowboys fans that somehow buy tickets to see a team they don't care about) but there aren't uglier, less supportive fans than in Chicago. Kind of sucks really.
Rex will do fine - a week of practicing with the #1's doesn't sound like much, but for him who has lots of experience with this team, it will do wonders. And remember that this is a completely different and better line than he had last year. And this is a completely different and better tailback than he had last year. And for whatever reason (maybe see the last two cited) this is a completely different and better offensive coordinator than he had last year. It's also a worse defense, but I agree with Joist in that the one area the D has really stepped up in is against the run.
I don't know what happened late in the second half, but we finally saw some pressure. I don't know if Izzy maybe needs to be in there on every snap, because this year it seems like if there's a great play coming from the line, they're saying his name. And Jeff, not sure you should be throwing roses Tommie Harris's way yet, because although his name got called there at the end, there was a whole bunch of game where he was doing a whole bunch of not much. How about the announcers talking about how Mark Anderson was continuing to pash rush on running plays and losing containment? This kid needs some coaching.
Hate to be sacrilegous, but did anyone else notice the D seemed to play better when Brownie left? Hate saying that, especially when he made a huge early interception that reminded me of the old days. Speaking of that, will there be a time this season when Brian U does something that reminds me of the old days? Can we maybe resurrect the talk last year of moving him to safety? Because I'm starting to think we're giving up a lot to the other team with him in the middle. He's not playing like an elite linebacker right now - he's not even playing like a better than average linebacker right now. And he's in the single most important spot on the field. Hate saying it, but it must be said. But the new and good mantra of the Bears ("we'll play the best players regardless of draft status or seniority") needs to be invoked RIGHT NOW because this D is hobbled, and unfortunately NOT due to injury.
I appreciate the win, and I'm ready to support Rex until Kyle heals, and I'm ready to see some changes on D.
GO BEARS! THANKS FOR THE (UGLY) WIN!

#29 v in GH said . . .I hope that KO returns as soon as possible, bu there is absolutely no reason to be trashing Rex. What other backups in the league would you rather have? Look what johnson has done to Dallas. I for one am glad we have a guy who has the potential to step in and perform. He knows the system, and at times he has had real success. We have seen him perform well. I wasn't concerned with the overthrows and such. That will happen when a guy gets jerked off the sideline and thrown in. He seemed to be playing at full throttle. That's good to see, because it might have been easy for him to have a "screw you" mentality.
The only concern I had was the balls batted at the line. There seemed to be a few more than with normal QBs, and one was picked. I fear that the old height issue really is the issue. If RT can plan a game plan that relies on the run and short passing game, then Rex should get a few chances off play action to throw the bomb to Hester. If not, then I fear that the pressure could get to Rex, and we all know what happens then.
I really feel in this situation that the guy we will learn the most about this coming Sunday is Ron Turner. Anyone who knows me knows I'm not going to be optimistic about the man, but if he could pull it out because of a correct game plan, I just might consider saying something nice about him.

#31 BearDown1982 said . . .Ugly or not, Rex played a big part in the win. And really did you expect a QB to come off the bench and shine? So props to him and to Forte; I wish I knew if his last few mediocre games were injury-related or if it was something else, but that's one of the vagaries of football that keep the discussions alive. I think the O-line gave him a few more seams in the second half. Did anyone see that?
November 3, 2008
#32 Kyle said . . .Talk about a crap time to lose Orton for a month...home for the Titans and then away for three very important games that could play a major role in deciding the season. Plus, a high ankle sprain may hinder him even when he comes back. What a shame...I was excited when Orton got up and in the face of a bunch of Lions after he got hurt. It was almost a dirty play, but the second guy got in late and certainly didn't try very hard at avoiding Orton as he fell toward him. KO probably should have thrown it away on that play, but you can't get mad at a guy for competing and trying to scramble 2 yards for a first.
The defense actually played fairly well in the 2nd half. One thing gives me hope for next week...our D has stopped the run all year (except in the Vikings game). Even yesterday, the Lions ran it well in the 2nd quarter, but that was it.
I think the Bears have a chance next week if the offensive line does a good enough job to not get Grossman killed. We will need to run the ball and use quick passes most of the game I'm thinking. I'm confident that it can stay close if our offense holds onto the football.
My biggest question from yesterday: what the hell was up with Soldier Field? The playing surface was a disgrace. The grounds crew should get a nice tounge lashing for that in my opinion. It's not like the weather has been that bad in Chicagoland the last couple of weeks by any means.
Also, what is up with Hester and the return game? He doesn't look like he is on the same page as his blockers at all. Although, he was close to breaking one...lets hope he is saving some magic for the next couple of weeks when we could use him the most.

Urlacher is another we could actually draft-replace next year. I just don't think his heart is in it anymore, and haven't since last season. We need someone much hungrier there, not just much richer.
Bluntly, after the first half I was wishing half the D would be demoted to the practice squad.
We cannot put next week on the Offense to win, period. Unfortunately, that's where it rests. We will NOT beat the Titans relying on our offense, no matter who is taking snaps, and our D is just horrendous anymore.
I think Greg Olsen will be our standout player next week on the O-side, with Briggs trying to carry the D alone.
It will be a long 4 quarters, folks.

#36 Phillip from NYC said . . .I say lets ditch the fullback. I wish we could find out the yards per carry average for Forte with and without the fullback. When Garza was pulling and leading the way, Forte got huge chunks. Then they put McKie back in and we couldn't get more than two yards. Is this because we have a bad fullback? Or does the two TE set spread out the defense? I think its both, but either way lets see more of this running game! Rex may also keep the safeties back because of his willingness to go down the field.
If we can go 2-2 without Orton, I think we will win the division. Let's hope we can make it happen.

1. Was at the Queens game. Ridiculous. The wife now wants me to buy season tickets. I told her that the waiting period is measured in generations, not years, and she thought I was joking. Apparently in France they don't do that.
2. When Orton went down, I thought it was his knee, and my stomach dropped like a rock. I seriously felt sick for a few minutes, but then a shot of Jameson cheered me up a bit.
3. What was it that was on that poster that Mulder had from the X-Files? "I want to believe?" Give me that poster, and put Rex's face on it. It's like everybody in the world thinks people who think Rex can do an OK job are equivalent to either Ron Paul supporters or UFOlogists. He's not "our quarterback" but he's still the guy who led us to a Super Bowl in '06. Pray that he's got some of that old juice left in him, and that we can see Good Rex for the next few games.

Animal - You are wrong about this club. I look forward to our 9th win, and the opportunity for you to announce to the world how wrong you have been.
NY Bears Fan - you are spot on with your analysis of Mark Bradley doing something very few Wideouts can do. He threw a 40 yard strike to Tyler Tygpen in the endzone yesterday in the Chiefs game.
The Bears have a knack for playing down to their competition and provide us with some ugly wins (well put Phil), but ugly wins in November means football in January. This is true for most ill-coached teams.
I've always liked Rex, and understand the ease in which people tear him down, but it would serve us all well to build him up.
All he has done is go through 2 excrutiating rehab stints, acted with dignity during the highs, and courage through the lows, helped to bring us to the Super Bowl, get abused in the meniacal local and national press, and have an ignorant Soldeir Field crowd boo him for a fumbled snap in a PRESEASON GAME.
The kid's got heart and that should be more then enough to earn your respect. He has earned mine.
The Titans are beatable.

#39 Phil from SATX said . . .The Cover 2 is not working. L. Smith and Babich need to switch schemes immediately. What is the point of running a cover 2 if you simply cannot get pressure on the QB. No pressure from the front four means the secondary will be vulnerable, means receivers will find openings in between the corner and safety, and means our defense sucks. I am sick of tired of the defense making sub-par quarterbacks look like Dan Marino. I can't even spell Orlovsky, or maybe I can, I don't know. Smith needs to step up and be a man and admit that this D scheme is not working with this personnel. I would put Urlacher on the line almost all the time and have him rush the passer. He certainly isn't getting to the ball in pass coverage. Maybe putting 54 on the line makes him more of an impact player. Our offense game plan will need to be different w/ Rex in there. As we saw yesterday, the short passing game is pretty much taken away with Rex playing. He is too short to connect on 5 to 7 yard slants or other shorter routes. He simply can't see over the line and balls get batted down constantly. That is a recipe for interceptions. Hopefully, with a week of practice his touch on his long ball comes back.

#40 LLcoolR said . . .Tom - you're absolutely right about the hubris posting, and I regret it. Never again. The good news is I only got one stinking thing right in that post - actually two -
Packers lose to Titans, Bears have sole possession of first place.
At least the lead line was right - Bears Move to 5-3.
Also, my last point - Matt Forte - Nuff said. That one proved to be true. I love the analysis about how the line stunts work but straight-ahead fullback leads absolutely do not. We're seeing that - in fact did anyone see the ESPN (or maybe NFL Network?) analysis that diagrammed the play that broke Mattay almost to the TD? It was done brilliantly, especially by Beekman, but Kreutz did his part too. It looks like when RT dials up something creative, it works really well for Forte. Our line looks to be really good at stunting, just not strong enough for straight-ahead plowing. So do it more.
I am more and more convinced that Rex's ONLY problem is his height. Everything that has developed bad from him stems from that. Why doesn't he step up in the pocket? Because when he does he can't see shit and is throwing into the back of the helmets of the guys in front of him. Believe me when I say I'm not being a dick about it - it's the truth and not Rex's fault. It's why he runs away from these guys in the rush.
It will be up to RT to recognize that and call plays which acknowledge that fact. All the Titans D meetings are going to focus on this week is "get your hands up, he'll try to get it out quickly" and there'll be a bunch more batted balls, and many times INTs result from those.
Forte's going to play a huge role in next week's win - I agree that Titans are beatable, and I think ESPECIALLY by us.

#41 DaBears Win! said . . .Thought I would check out the site again, some good opinions being shared. I'm going to skip over anything about Rex and the O in general, because i agree with most everything said on here. But the defense is starting to really wear on me.
Why does it seem like the D has just completely lost it's edge? The only exceptions being Briggs and Payne... Where are the guys that play mean? i remember tommie harris used to just own people, and he seemed angry while he did it. Urlacher used to make AT LEAST two big hits a game, now it's down to one per month. our DE's used to fly on EVERY play, now they disappear for entire drives, sometimes entire quaters and games. i just do not see any desire to be the best by these guys anymore. i remember in 2005 they all played with a swagger that said there is no offense in this league that can hang with us, and they had that somewhat in 06. so what happened? we still have every big play guy on this team. what has happened? where is the accountability? who is going to be the leader that steps up and tells the rest of the guys start playing BEARS football? the most frustrating part of this is simply we know that all of these guys can do it. they've all done it before, so what the hell has happened?
alright, that was a long rant. had to get that out there. please don't anyone say it's babich. i'm talking about players playing with no life. and if that's what rivera brought to this D above everything else, then they really screwed the pooch by letting him go. i really dont think that the scheme needs to be changed, it's all attitude. look at all the best defenses in the league, and every one of them plays as if the other team just fucked their wives or something. this season is on the D. all on the D.

#42 Albert In Tucson said . . .While I don't particularly trust Rex (he's too schizophrenic), I'm behind him all the way while KO is out. Having said that, "Please get well soon, Kyle."
The real problem DaBears have is with their underachieving defense. With a couple of exceptions (Briggs and Payne) there is no fire. No hunger. All the big names on DaBears Defense got their contract extensions this year. But, Briggs is the only one of those who is stepping up every Sunday.
Two thoughts:
1. Swap Urlacher & Briggs. Briggs is moving better to the ball and is more able to drop into coverage in the middle. Urlacher would be free to attack the QB more often.
2. Since we seldom use the FB as a FB, why not put our AP in that position? He's as good at blocking as McKie and is a better runner & receiver. Can you imagine the mismatches on a pass play with Peterson in motion towards the slot and Forte in the backfield. AP could also line up in the slot, something McKie could never do.Bear Down and show us (and yourselves) you can win the big games.

1) Like I said last week. The NFL is week to week based on who gets hurt. "What if Orton Goes down?" I hope this puts an end to perusing the schedule for wins/losses beyond the next game. 2) It became immediately apparent that with 3+ inches in height we lose from Orton to Grossman is huge. 3) I didn't want a winless team coming to town last weekend. The Lions improved makedly as soon as they sent Roy Williams packing. Heym Jerry, how's that workin' for ya in Dallas? 4)BUT..I am happy to have Tennessee come here 8-0, ESPECIALLY at the expense of the Packers. Titans bring a virtual "statue" with them at QB in Kerry Collins, but a very dangerous "Thunder & Lightning" combo at RB with White and Johnson. Bears must protect the ball. 5) NFL: Can you not find/train Zebras to at least call the obvious? Orton was PILED ON when hurt. He was already down and out of bounds when the second guy took his free shot. Sorry, fans, Kevin Payne got away with one on Calvin Johnson. And you mopes need a conference to call that horse collar on Hester? DUH! 6) Yet another stupid personal foul from the D. 7) They say 1 month for Kyle? We'll be LUCKY if it's only that. X-rays / MRI are liable to tell another, darker story.

Here at DaBearsBlog, you are free to kill us or the Bears as you so wish. You are not free, however, to be an asshole. So if you spew racism or ill-meaning foul language (cursing about football is just fine) or anything of that ilk, your comments ain't gonna last long, jerk.
