From Mike Brown

Monday, November 17, 2008 | Jeff

Rick Morrissey had the following quote from Mike Brown in his Trib column. I'm staying true to my word and not adding anything of my own regarding this defense.

All I can tell you is that, obviously, our defense isn't what it used to be...Everyone wants it to be what it used to be, and it's not that. It's all about performance, and we haven't been performing well. Wherever we're ranked, that's where we deserve to be ranked, know what I'm saying? It is what it is. Once we come to grips that our defense isn't what it's supposed to be, we'll all be better off.

Our perception is that we have a good defense.

The reality is we don't.

The most honest and pointed criticism I've read all season from the only player who showed up yesterday.

Mike Brown seems to be the only one playing with any heart on this defense, if we had 11 Mike Browns then we would have the best defense in the league.

This is exactly why he has been my favorite Bear for as long as I can remember...this guy actually gives a crap and it shows.

Let's hope this sparks something ala the 2005 Browns loss and Brown's, 'It's like we suck' comment afterward.

I'll never forget after the playoff loss to the Eagles as groundscrew had already begun taking up seats...Brownie stayed on the field, kneeling as the stadium emptied...as if he couldn't believe they had lost.

He is a true Bear and a true football player.

BearDown1982, I remember being 8 years old when the Bears lost that game to the Eagles, the next morning sportscenter showed images of Mike Brown taking a knee on the field and i asked my dad why he was doing that, he turned to me and simply said, "he cares about his team", ever since then Ive always rooted for Mike Brown and I always will.

I too love Mike Brown. He is honest and real and a true Bear.

However, that being said, and I hate to say it, but Mike Brown is part of the problem (and given the above, I think he would admit to it). He's not the same Mike Brown he was. He may have had some hard hits yesterday, which were greatly appreciated, but he caused no turnovers, participated in no sacks, and was an integral member of the defense that looked lost and incapable out there.

THAT having been said, I would also take him as my head defensive coach in a second. I bet he could do a much better job than what we have, and I know he would be more of a leader.

I believe that the reason Mike Brown hasn't kicked more Bears' asses from a leadership standpoint is because he knows he's not delivering, and he feels like it would be hypocritical for him to call out his fellow Bears when he himself is not performing up to a level he deems acceptable. I think the same goes for Brian Urlacher, who also is sliding down the backside of his career. Urlacher used to call people out - now he knows he himself is not delivering, and he doesn't feel like he can send that message.

We may be needing for our player-coaches to take matters into their own hands, bench themselves in favor of some of the younger guys who at least have athleticism if not the experience. Right now experience without the required athleticism is not working. And God knows our coaches who don't coach aren't going to do it for them.

Moving Urlacher to a different position would help. Could Urlacher play free safety? How about Ur at free and Mike Brown at strong safety? I don't know what the right combo is, I only know that the current player setup is not working. (although for one fleeting moment, one great play, it was old Brian all over again - the one great moment of that game!)

You guys are spending a lot of time beating up your team. What I saw during Sunday's match was a Chicago side loaded with a lot of potential and you should all be proud of this. You have some great players, a great coach, and really strong leadership on the field. I see nothing less than a NFC Championship for you guys. The game was a lot closer than the score indicated. Seriously, you were only 5 quick touchdowns from winning that game.

Oh yeah like the Packers will win the super bowl. Please.

If our D and ST (or either one) manages a prompt head out of ass manuever we can still take the North over the other douche teams in our division. We would probably get slaughtered in the 1st round but we could always get lucky.

Now where is my little black medical book? And a felt pen and a hypodermic of epinephrine to give this team a shot of pure adrenaline to the heart or maybe just a few drops of adrenochrome from the little brown bottle in my shaving kit.

Lets see how the Bears respond after being emasculated and embarassed for a whole Sunday afternoon instead of just a 4th Quarter.

The Bears just need to grow a pair and get into man coverage with the younger group and bench those d-bags on the d-line that have less push than a 1987 Civic going uphill.

Oh yeah, and let's not let Hester line up like a receiver. He isn't one. Maybe then he can stop pussin' out like a little bitch when he hits the 15-yard line.

Oh, and Lovie, maybe look a little pissed when your team is getting butt fucked by the one team you said we would beat up year in and year out. If some of these Bears had the drive of Mike Brown and the audacity of K.O. maybe we would be smoking teams by, well, 14 or 17 points.

Please utilize the youngsters. Olsen and Forte are workin' out, how about the little guy from Northern (Wolfe) getting some snaps in too? Oh, and if Hester is gonna be a homo, let Manning rip it up. At least he doesn't fear the 15-yard line.

And, Mr. Turner, take your passing game and shove it. Try throwing down field on 1st down. Hey, maybe don't run the ball on a 3rd and 1. Ever. Again. Hell, I can pretty much call the plays before they happen. Also, a screen pass that isn't working (the one behind Kruetz) isn't a screen pass if you have never gained yardage from it. At this point, it's a penalty. Mix it up. Or, get your rabbit's foot out and pray it doesn't happen to get stuffed again in the back field.

Oh, and the Tampa 2 only works if you don't have beat-offs on the line that haven't had a sack in the last 19 weeks of play. Get em out and move someone in that can.

Fuck their paychecks.

neutral observer -- i can't tell if you're being really kind or just patronizing. yes we have some great players, but that doesn't do much good when they're not performing.

i'm no expert, i don't know if they're just not getting amp'd up for the games, if the scheme is wrong or what. but i'd say at this point, as a coach, saying "we all have bad days, we'll get back in there" is just not fucking good enough.

after multiple, repeated shit performances, my tendency is to blame the coaching. ultimately, they have to be accountable. and the more losses that follow in the same awful formula, the more the blame goes to the coaches.

if i'd seen failures in different ways, where we made adjustments but still lost for different reasons each game, that would be one thing. but everyone knows they can throw all over us, and they do, and we keep letting them. that's bullshit. fire babich now. any maybe lovie too.

First of all; all of you Packer 'fans' that are coming onto this blog to drop F-bombs and taunt...do me a kindness and stay on the Jets blogs. I, for one, have always enjoyed the fan perspective on this site; as most of you are willing to engage in intelligent football analysis of your team. I enjoy some 'friendly banter' back and forth, but if you are going to come to this site and just spew forth stupid things, stay off.

I had the pleasure (for me) to be at Lambeau yesterday and meet some pretty cool Bears fans...the best get-up was a guy dressed in the shirt and tie with the Mike Ditka knit sweater vest.

I've given opinions and thoughts on this site, and I know that most of you, like me, enjoy talking football in general, and can engage in an intelligent exchange.

Hey, if you want to drop the F-bombs and call names, that's your perogative, but most of the real fans that I know would rather talk about what they see and how it can be fixed.

As I have said before, it starts and ends with the McCaskeys. There are enough of you to start a huge fundraising campaign and buy this team...have it owned by the fans.

I have been watching every game since Walter Payton was drafted (75') and I have never been as mad at this team as I am now. The reason for my anger is Lovie Smith. He of the "Rex is our quarter back", and "There is nothing wrong with our defensive scheme" quotes and arrogant, catatonic, semi-comatose demeanor.

Mr. Smith has ruined the team I love with his lack of accountablitly philosophy. There is nothing more important to team play than accountability. It is motivating for a player to be held accountable for poor performance. Either the player gets better or he gets benched!! It's the golden rule of football, the bottom line, the prime directive, the be-all and end-all of how the game is played and Lovie Smith has removed it from our team!!! He did it with the QB position in 2006 and it cost us a super bowl. And now he is doing it with the defense and it is costing us our IDENTITY!!!. We were the MONSTER'S OF THE MIDWAY for crying out loud!!! Now because of Lovie Smith, we are PANSY'S of the Midway.

Sure over the last 30 years we had plenty of bad seasons, no QB, no WR's, no O-line, no corners, but we always tried hard to kick butt with the front 7 and we held our heads high because of our efforts! We hit hard, played angry, applied "extra curriculars" in the pile, and did what ever it took to make our opponent feel like he had been in a war! Now we are ashamed of our efforts and snipe at the media and fans instead of looking in the mirror, bucking up, and trying to knock the snot out of somebody!!.

This BS that Lovie is putting out has ruined the team's attitude and our reputation as a tough team from a tough town. And if there is one thing Chicagoans can't stand it's being sold some BS!!! So Lovie is toast in this town from now on, no matter what he does.

Normally I defer to the professionals who put in years of time learning their trades and I don't ever presume to know more than they do. But in Lovie's case I have to make an exception because even I can see that changes are LONG over due! For one, sit Tommy Harris' fat, whiny, non-productive, overpaid ass down and play Marcus Harrison at DT, the kid is a stud!!! Next, sit old ass Ogunleye on the bench and let Idonije play DE, he is an impact player every down from out there!! Then put Urlacher's creaky back havin ass at strong safety, or on the bench, (I can't believe I said that, 54 was a horse but he's fallen off a lot), and put some athletic stud's in at LB to help out Briggs. Jesus Christ Lovie!! Are you blind or just stupid??!! DO SOMETHING!!!

And the biggest overdue change is firing Lovie Smith!! JA, what's up with you man!! Can't you see this idiot is turning our team into a freakin laughing stock?!!! Everyone that watches football knows it. How come you don't know it?!! I thought JA gave up on the "I paid him big money, so he has to play/coach even if he sucks" philosophy.

I love this team and always will. I just don't understand what the fuck is going on when every freakin body smells garbage, but no one takes out the trash!!! The house is stinking you idiots!! BEAR DOWN and clean up!!!

What's everybody's thoughts on whether Kyle or Rex should start next week if Kyle needs more time to heal?

from Da site:

“We knew he was a good back,” said safety Kevin Payne. “I am surprised we didn’t play as well as we should have played. Give them credit. They came out and played hard, played more physical than we did. We need to start playing up to our potential. We’re a better team than what we showed.”

SURPRISED?!? I THINK YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO MIKE THERE BUDDY, YOU ARE NOT A BETTER TEAM THAN YOU SHOWED! YOU MAY BE A WORSE TEAM THAN YOU SHOWED IN OUR WINS AND CLOSE GAMES.

“I don’t think I hit the ground,” said Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who completed 23 of 30 passes for 227 yards with 2 TDs, 1 interception and a 105.8 passer rating. “No sacks, no quarterback hits … When you’re not getting touched in the pocket, you can stand in there and throw with a lot of confidence, and that’s what I did.”

NOT EVEN A KNOCK DOWN OR A HURRY?!? WE SUCK!

“It’s been a very disappointing couple weeks,” Babich said. “It’s been an up-and-down season as we go along here. [But] we have good football players, guys that have a lot of pride and play with a lot of pride. We’ve just got to make sure to get it corrected.

DISAPPOINTED?!?, YOU HAVE ABOUT AS MUCH PASSION AS A LIMP BISCUIT AND YEA BIG CHANGE IN THE ANSWERS TOO, WE JUST NEED TO GET IT CORRECTED?!? COME ON!!!

“We’re still in first place in the division. For us, we’ve got to play good defense to win. Any time you give up as many yards and as many points as we gave up [against the Packers], you don’t give your team a chance to win.”

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! YOU ARE THE WORST EXCUSE FOR A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR IN A BASKET FULL OF LOSER COACHES (EXCEPT ST, BUT THEY ARE SUCKING TOO RIGHT NOW, THE OTHER TWO PHASES BEING CONTAGEOUS HAVE AFFECTED THE ST MAYBE?)

WHATEVER!!!

I DON'T WANT TO HEAR SHIT FROM THIS TEAM, THEY NEED TO GO ON A MEDIA SILENCE UNTIL AFTER THE RAMS GAME!

I've just been reading for awhile and I felt like I should start posting again. I know Jeff isn't saying anything about the defense, but from what I see is that the safety position and the linebackers are doing alright while the corners and the d-line are completely ineffective. I fell those are the spots we need to look at, because that makes two of the four areas of defense that is performing terribly and is crippling the D overall. Also, I read on the suntimes that Chris Williams played on O in the final two minutes and would have given up a sack if "The Amazing Rex Grossman" hadn't spun out of it... I didn't know that was possible. Anyways, what should we think of Williams performance then?

November 18, 2008

#24 Linebackers Coach said . . .

we should move briggs to MLB, put J. Williams in brigg's outside spot and then put Urlacher in HH/Roach's spot. Also we need to stop putting our LB's up at the line so much, it creates too much space for that god damn 6 yard pass over the middle on 1st or 2nd down. Then our front 7 has to start stuffing the run without having to drop mike brown in the box.

even if you dont like the idea what happend to jamar williams? I thought he showed some promise last season in limited playing time.

jeff -- i never thought I'd hear you say "delusional" and agree with you, but those were my thoughts exactly.

our division sucks. we're lucky to be in a 3-way tie for 1st. there are some divisions we'd be in LAST place now with our record. our performance thus far is *nothing* to be proud of.

Jeff, I agree. Why the hell is first place even Lovies concern? Your concern should be that your team is player WELL, not that you are in first place. I would be happier if they were 7-3 and in 2nd place than 5-5 and tied for first. The 5-5 record says it all, not a good football team... not a winning football team. Why Orton played yesterday is beyond me. He looked horrible for the first snap. He NEEDED 4 weeks off... why didnt we give it to him??? He proved he had "guts", who the fuck cares? He proved that if he played against the Titans we would have lost just the same. If the organization truly believes in Orton, let the man heal. We have St. Louis next week... let Rex hand the football off and let forte run for 140+

Here is hoping for Rey Malaluga in a Bears uniform next year.

I've always been a bears fan in the same way that I'm a cubs fan, I love it when they win but I couldn't give you the names of more than 5 players. That changed two years ago when I saw the bears shut out the packers and dominate them in all three phases of the game. I watched every single game that year, from the magical Monday in Arizona to the heart breaker in the rain in Miami. In that year I went from not knowing who anyone besides urlacher was to being a fan of all 53 men on the field. Last year I joined the army and because of basic and ait was only able to see the last two games of the season from beginning to end. I've had to miss many games this season as well including this week. But as I sat in the trailer on our flight line, god knows how far away from a TV, pressing refresh on my blackberry, for the first time ever I was glad I wasn't watching the game. This team has so much depth and talent there isn't a single team they couldn't beat. But they aren't beating them, they aren't winning like they should. When Mike Brown took personal responsibility for the failures of his defense it was the only thing that kept me from sliding into that place where the hope for this season is already spent on next. I thank god for Mike Brown because he turns the chicago bears into My Chicago Bears. I honestly was on the verge of tears for him when I read his comments after he got injured against the chargers last year. A few weeks ago I joked that if he lost any more major time with injuries, for lovie to fire babitch and make Brown coordinator. I am 100 percent serious now, patch needs to go and there couldn't be anyone better for the job than Mike. He knows this D better than any of the players and I suspect better than the coaches too. If Halas can coach and play Brown can do it too.
There is so much more that I want to say but it takes forever to type on a cell phone, so I'll leave you with this. Either this loss finally gets a fire lit under their ass and the D plays lights out the rest of the year into the playoffs or they lose heart and maybe get another win.

Interesting- Ron Rivera is the DC and we have the #2 and #5 defense in '05 and '06 respectively. So Lovie pushes him out of town.

Lovie brings in Babich, then we have #28 defense last year and now #20, which is only getting worse. How come the media is not holding Lovie's feet to the fire when he said "Trust me" last year with Babich's hiring?

And I wish all the "stars" on the defense, ala Tommie Harris, Brian Urlacher, and Lance Briggs would just grow up. Seriously, if I have to watch Brian Urlacher act like a pouty little baby during postgame interviews, I'm going to burn my #54 jersey. At exactly what time did he decide to be a prick?

This team is headed for 7-9 at best. And just like last year, we are going to constantly hear Lovie say "it's a 6 game season...a 5 game season...blah blah blah." I've seen more colorful demeanor in a crayola crayon. Yikes.

When are all these bad decisions and lack of team heart and motivation and lack of being prepared for the game (which Sunday was the 1st time it seemed the whole team had no idea they were playing in an enormously important football game at noon) going to fall as a problem with the coaching. That many players couldn't have lost that much of their physical ability that quickly, could they? If so then put someone else in. There needs to be some kind of change made before it really is too late. I thought last year we had wasted a chance to make the playoffs even with all the injuries. This year would be just unforgivable.

I am going to say it. After the game, I called my brother in New York and he voiced feelings that really stuck.

THANK GOD WE GOT WHIPPED!

Now before the lynching starts, dont get me wrong. I hate losing to the Packers. I hate it. If we went 2-14 but the only 2 wins were against the Yellow and Green, I would be content.

Second: Our defense is miserable. We all know it. I think the past couple weeks its been obvious to every single Bears fan that our pass coverage is one of the worst in the league.

We needed to get destroyed because losing by 7 (Titans) or losing by 1 (Falcons) or winning but allowing 42 pts (Vikes) or being forced to make a late comeback to pull out a victory against a team that hasnt won a game all year (Lions), Lovie has been able to tell us that everything is ok. That we "pulled out a good win" or we "were just one or two plays away from winning that game" (Im paraphrasing here, not direct quotes)

Well guess what Lovie, EVERYTHING IS NOT OK!!! EVERYTHING IS PRETTY FUCKING FAR FROM OK!

I dont care what smoke you try blowing up our asses, simple fact of the matter is that our defense has played bad enough to have gotten blown out 4 or 5 times this year and it finally happened. It was like playing russian roulette by yourself. . . you knew at somepoint that bullet was gonna hit ya, you just werent sure when.

This season is a wash. End of story.

p.s. I realize Mike Brown has lost a step (or 2) but personally I would rather have 11 guys that played as hard as Mike Brown that were only "decent" players than have 11 guys that are considered "stars" that dont play with the same heart.

There may be others that want to say things but not at the risk of being put in the Lovie dog house and being cut a few weeks later or played for 1 or 2 plays each game.

Hmm. Coach Smith. What are we to do about you, my friend? Rumors abounding. You being asked to coach at Tennessee and your name being thrown about as a possible replacement for the HORRID Wade Phillips in Dallas.

''Things happen,'' Smith said. ''I have been in this situation before. Good teams go through this. You make your corrections and you move on. It's no more than that. We have too much football left to go to harp on what happened, why it happened. Just move on.''

The thing is, Coach Smith, the 2008 Bears are not a good team. I said it yesterday, and I fervently believe in it, GOOD FOOTBALL TEAMS BECOME BETTER AS THE YEAR GOES ON. BAD FOOTBALL TEAMS WILT AND DIE AS COLD WEATHER APPROACHES.

Years ago, coaches retained their jobs for years. Do you think George Halas would have won 324 games in today's NFL (if he were not the owner of the franchise of course)? Or Tom Landry and his dismal latter years? Don Shula and his ups and downs? Even Bill Cowher, and his 14 Super Bowl-less years in Pittsburgh, perphorated by two Super Bowl appearances (one a loss, one a victory). Or Chuck Noll? There is no such thing as long-term coaching in today's NFL.

Because of that, Coach Smith should not be given any leway. In his fifth season as Chicago Bears head coach, he has had two winning seasons and two losing seasons, and he sits at .500 right now. If this season ends in failure, he should be canned. Babich should be canned immediately following the last game (I hate mid-season firings unless they are absolutely necessary, changing horses mid-stream, it's the principle of the thing).

Coach Smith: ''We're always ready to make extreme modifications if we need it. When you're a first-place team, I don't think we need to [take] extreme measures.''

The Bears will be a great team again. But not this year. Not with this cast of characters. The skeleton is good; Orton, Forte, Briggs...probably someone else who is not coming to mind.

Just rebuild!

I thought Jason Garrett was the heir apparent in Dallas. Doesn't he make 3 milllion a year as asst. head coach. How much does Lovie make? You can't have the asst. making more than the coach. Can you?

The sad thing about it is, the good people on this blog have more fire and passion for this team than the people who are playing for it and coaching it.

And who's to blame for that? The coaches. Specifically, The Coach. (not Da Coach - Mr. Lovie's never earned the "Da" and never will - could you imagine an SNL sketch based on him?)

It really has come clear for me - he doesn't like it here. And he hates us, hates Chicago (too cold anyway for someone who hails from Big Sandy Texas) and he's now coaching worse than George Bush is presidenting as a lame duck. Z, he's making $5.5MM per year and still owed $13MM on his contract. So yes he makes more than Garrett.

Shonbear and Oaktown, THANK YOU for being great and passionate fans and for also being SMARTER than the idiots and non-caring bastards who are running our team right now.

Isn't that the biggest thing? Do you think Coach Smith loves being a Chicago Bear? Does he look like he does? Does he sound like he does? Do his press conferences which drip with quiet arrogance show that he loves our team?

I WANT A COACH WHO LOVES BEING A CHICAGO BEAR.

I WANT A COACH WHO IS COMMITTED TO OUR TEAM.

I WANT A COACH WHO IS COMMITTED TO WINNING.

I WANT A COACH WHO KNOWS HOW TO WIN!

Lame Duck Lovie Smith is NONE of these.

Be gone.

Lovie is just so damn stubborn/arrogant and knows no other way of being. To state that we need no major adjustments because we "are a first place team" is just fucking mindboggling. The man is blind.

Is he just riding out his tenure and leaving this team to go to Tennessee? Good. Leave now.

If not, take control of this team. You're losing it, if you haven't completely lost it yet. Fire your buddy, as much as it hurts. Then YOU call the defense, and make the necessary adjustments/kicks in the ass. Bench the slackers, and give the starting jobs to people who will perform.

You said it yourself, Lovie. It's a six-game season. So hold tryouts for EVERY position. Or else, face reality and realize it's not a six game season. Realize that shit needs to get fixed, fast. Or more heads will roll.

God, what I would give for the Samurai next season.

Not meaning to detract from the great commentary going on here, but since I'm not that great with analysis I figure everybody could use a good packer joke right about now. (With apologies to Windy City Packer Fan, who can actually make a good point every now and then.)

One night in Green Bay a family is sitting down to dinner.

A son says to his father, "Hey Dad, guess what? I was in school today and we were saying our ABCs, and I was the only one able to go all the way, A-Z! Nobody else could do it - why is that, Dad?"

The father smiles to his son and says, "Son, that's because you're a Packer fan."

The next day, the family is at the dinner table and again the son tells the father, "Hey Dad, guess what? I was in school today and we were counting, and I was the only one able to go from 1 to 100 without stopping! Nobody else could do it - why is that, Dad?"

The father, beaming, again says to his son, "It's because you're a Packer fan. I'm proud of you."

The next day everyone's eating dinner, and the father, hoping to hear more about the great stuff his son's done, asks: "So, son, what did you do in school today?"

"Well dad, today we had gym class, and when I was in the locker room with the other boys, I saw that my you-know-what was a LOT bigger than all the other boys' you-know-whats! Is it because I'm a Packer fan?!?!"

"No, son, that's because you're 28 years old."

It is hard to get up passion for a team that has none. That's why we're all drawn like magnets to Mike Brown's admission, and that's why we're readying the stake for Lovie. I'm at a point where I really don't care about next week. I just don't care. I wish it were a better opponent. Now they'll probably win with this same lame shit mentality and think everything is ok. But you know what, I don't care. I'll still watch them because I will always watch them, but they aren't playing like Chicago Bears. I honestly think that if they're losing this week I will still watch the game without emotion, it won't even piss me off. Most of these guys are just wearing the uniform, they're not acting like Chicago Bears. It would be different if we'd never seen them play well, but these guys have played well in the past, and they just don't give a shit now and it shows. Until they start giving a shit, I don't either. I think that's why I haven't posted as much this year. Well it's either that or that I have been to busy sucking ass, swallowing Bears players cum and having gay sex with the other bloggers on this site to type much. Multi-tasking can be a real bitch.

I guess all of the shit we gave the Defense during the pre-season had some merit after all......

Remember those couple of weeks? I would love to get the names of all the players and coaches who said "It's only pre-season" while they were getting torched and line them up and throw dog shit at their faces.

I guess the fans know more than you think Lovie! See...coaches and players come and go but it's us the FANS who put up with this bullshit year after year! We know this team better than anyone.

Hey WCPF, good to hear from you. That guy in the Ditka get up is at all the home games - people really do a double take when they see him!

In the last thread, a poster made a point that Lovie is coaching to be fired. That may be extreme, but Lovie IS coaching like he really doesn't care - like he has his money and a long contract and when it's over he can go to TV or whatever.

He is coaching like the overpaid Defense is playing. No coincidence, in my opnion.

I also agree with whoever said we need someone who is proud to be part of the BEARS. I thought that was Lovie when he came in saying beating the Pack was job 1. Now beating the Pack is a nice to have, but not big enough to come in with a purpose.

Writers like Rosenbloom and even Marriotti have their place in times liek these. The problem is they lose credibility bitchign about coaches or players when it's not worth it - and then they just come across like negative writiers when there is REALLY something to ridicule (like Lovie right now).
