Rex Grossman will start Sunday for the Chicago Bears, barring an unexpectedly miraculous recovery from Kyle Orton. Rex Grossman will start at home in front of a fan base just dying to shout obscenities in his direction. He’ll start against the top defense in the NFL and the only undefeated team remaining. He’ll start for a team no one believed would find themselves protecting a first place lead halfway through the season.
As good as the Titans are, they don’t match up particularly well against the Bears. They run on first-and-ten. They run on second-and-seventeen. They run on third-and-twelve. (I saw all three of these situations against the Packers.) They have a racio-alcoholic statue quarterback with a long delivery and a receiving core that features Justin “I’m total crap” Gage. They want to run the ball and the Bears can stop the run. So Sunday – at Soldier Field – the Bears will have an opportunity to win the football game.
But if you think Jeff Fisher and Albert Haynesworth are going to allow Matt Forte to repeat his second half performance, you ain’t watched the Titans play. If the Bears are going to win they’ll need a play or two from #8. Just a play or two. That’s all.
And call me crazy…but I think they just might get it…and announce themselves as contenders in the NFC. At least until they have to defend the pass again.

While I don't particularly trust Rex (he's too schizophrenic), I'm behind him all the way while KO is out. Having said that, "Please get well soon, Kyle."You're right, the real problem DaBears have is with their underachieving pass defense. With a couple of exceptions (Briggs and Payne) there is no fire. No hunger. All the big names on DaBears Defense got their contract extensions this year. But, Briggs is the only one of those who is stepping up every Sunday.
Two thoughts:
1. Swap Urlacher & Briggs. Briggs is moving better to the ball and is more able to drop into coverage in the middle. Urlacher would be free to attack the QB more often.
2. Since we seldom use the FB as a FB, why not put our AP in that position? He's as good at blocking as McKie and is a better runner & receiver. Can you imagine the mismatches on a pass play with Peterson in motion towards the slot and Forte in the backfield. AP could also line up in the slot, something McKie could never do.Bear Down Bears and show us (and yourselves) you can win the big games.

I am 100% behind Rex as long as he is the starter, I was dissapointed when i herd he was the backup going into this year. Rex is a great starting QB when he is protected (as all quarterbacks are) but when he gets anxious in the pocket, he gets inconsistant. The key to rex grossman is not letting him get hit early in the football game. If we can do that, then we will come out on top against the Titans.

#11 Viva said . . .Jeff: I agree. I think Tennessee is a great matchup for us as long as we actually do what we are supposed to and stop the run. When Justin Gage is you #1 receiver, all the Bears need to worry about is the run and attacking the QB. There should rarely be a situation where we pull 3 or even 2 LB into coverage. We should be sending all 3 and maybe a safety nearly every play.
I also think this is a game we can win offensively. Forte has proved to have good hands. If we can get him the ball in open field he will make plays. He isnt going to rush for 130 yard up the middle, but he could easily get 100+ total yards. If the line can protect Rex, I think we can exploit the weaker part of the titans d. It should be good to have Lloyd in better health as well.
I think this is a very winable game. There is no need to call our season toast just because we lose KO for 3-4 games. We have one of the best back-ups in the league and I like Rex's chances against the Titans, Rams and Queens.

I've always liked Rex, and understand the ease in which people tear him down, but it would serve us all well to build him up.
All he has done is go through 2 excrutiating rehab stints, acted with dignity during the highs, and courage through the lows, helped to bring us to the Super Bowl, get abused in the local and national press, and have an ignorant Soldeir Field crowd boo him for a fumbled snap in a PRESEASON GAME.

Incidentally, Kerry Collins has had very few reps in the past few years. This aided him during the first part of the season. As the film accrues, you watch. He'll be drinking in no time.
It would not surprise me if a chunk of the bye week was spent preparing for the Titans instead of the Lions.
Kerry Collins only has 3 TD passes? Wow. He almost gave the game away to Baltimore. He's due for a terrible game. Seriously. His numbers are awful. I'm very much not concerned with their offense. I'm very much concerned about ours...their D is the story. If we don't turn the ball over, we pretty much win the football game.
We need to pick on Nick Harper. He sucks. We should have picked on him during the Super Bowl, but Ron Turner is stupid...

#19 zmac said . . .Zmac-How can you say Rex's snap issues are behind him after just a half of play? I'm pretty sure a person's hands stop growing after they have gone through puberty. Hopefully, Rex will have a growth spurt this week and show up to Sunday's games with hands the size of Lou Forigno, but I don't think its going to happen. Kruetz is partially to blame for the snap issues in the past, but it does not help having a QB with ooompa loompa hands. I'm rooting for him because he is our QB for now, but I will be worrying every play that he is going to turn it over.

#31 jdawg said . . .Briansong: Yes, because Ron Turner's offensive unit has improved 20 spots...over Ron Turner's offensive unit...means anything whatsoever. The fact that we were one of the best offenses operating under the no-huddle last season and this season says very little about Ron Turner, besides that he'll let the quarterback actually quarterback now. Good for him. Rex will benefit from this quite a bit. Every time he used the no huddle the past few seasons we scored points or moved the ball fairly consistently, though that sample size is pretty small.
The key to the offensive improvement in my eyes goes like this:
1. The no-huddle offense
2. Matt Forte the pass catching RB
3. Matt Forte the rushing RB
4.....
97. Ron Turner "improving" from last season. The fact that he still runs the football with Jason McKie on a key third down late in the game is ample evidence. Nothing can hide that amount of stupid. Not even 20 spots of improvement for the offense as a whole. We need to continue going no-huddle even with a lead late in the game. First downs win games, not using every single second of a 3 and out.

#33 john said . . .Bill, major kudos. And great thread from Jeff.
In my opinion the key to this game is Ron Turner. He has done a great job this season of building up Orton's confidence. Early in the year we saw the '05 Kyle and he was rather mediocre in the first 3 games. Against an agressive defense in Philly Turner got Orton going. And once Kyle got his confidence up he started rolling.
Turner has a similar opportunity this week. The key is to get Rex going early and into a grove. That *might* keep the various drunks and douchebags quiet for a while.
In my opinion that means early featuring of Booker, Clark, and R Davis. Rex is comfortable with those guys and you can run a variety of medium routes to them to start things off. And at least once a quarter they need to run the bomb. Lastly I wouldn't mind seeing some no huddle to start things off ala what we say from him against the Giants last year. Similar defense and situation.November 3, 2008

What I don't want to hear, or see, is Rex thinking he has to make plays happen. That's when we see him at his worst: holding on to the ball for 4 seconds and getting sacked instead of finding the hot route, throwing into double coverage down the field, and only completing 50% of his passes.
What I do want to see is Rex reading the defense pre-snap, finding the hot receiver, and dumping it down to Forte when he doesn't have anything. Oh, and to handle the snap correctly. And...to not trip over his feet going backwards in the pocket.
This next month is on the Defense. The first half of 2008, they've been non-existent in pass defense. There's no better way to jump the second half of the season than jumping all over Kerry Collins.

We need him now, bigtime, and I for one feel sure that he's going to do a more than adequate job holding the fort until Cool Breeze heals. Rex may not be the best backup in the league - but only because of Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn. He might be #3 though.
We'll see more than our share of batted balls and maybe a few botched snaps, especially if inclement weather is involved, but we'll also see some SWEETASS long throws and points scored. Rex'll do fine - just you watch.

#44 lady c said . . .All I am asking Bears fans this Sunday is PLEASE DO NOT BOO REX!
Booing does not do him or the team any good and it just makes Bears fans look like uneducated, drunk assholes (see: Philly Fans)
The great irony of the way Rex is treated in this city is that he has really never done anything "wrong." Sure he has failed to show up in some big games and sure he has not played up to the expectations that come with being a first round draft pick but does that warrent him being treated worse than Larry Johnson is treated in KC or Leonard Little in St. Louis? The NFL is filled with real dirt bags, guys who have no business reaping the benefits of celebrity...Rex is just a guy who has not played as well as we would like.
You would be hard pressed in your everyday working world to find someone in your company who would handle the ups and downs that Rex has gone though with the same amount of class he has exibited in his time here in Chicago.
The guy may not be worthy of you spending $180 on an official home jersey but he at least deserves your respect for showing up and playing the role he was assigned.I don't know what to expect from Rex from a numbers standpoint but I do expect Rex to stand up after the game, take responsibility for a loss or deflect praise to his teammates after a win and most importantly handle himself with the class and dignity fitting to represent the people of this great city.

#46 Bearman on the Sangamon said . . .Mikebdot, right on, Brian Second Row, great.
Issues:
Ron Turner, Lovie, Babich
Turner:
He nees to go with the no huddle, shotgun, dump off, move the pocket, rollouts, hand the ball off to Forte, screen passes to Forte, take an occasional shot down field, but don't depend on the shot down field for the big play, depend on the run game and pass mid to shorts to D and G get the first downs with them, rex does well with those tall targets.
If it's not working make a change, you know a half time adjustment?
Babich:
Um, yea how about blitz more, get some fire under all our overpaid players (except Briggs) and get to the QB however possible, get away from the putting the LB's in coverage, send them forward, continue stopping the run, but even that could improve, most importantly get to the QB.
Urlacher, really man, if you "outplayed" your contract last year, than what does that mean about how your matching your contract this year with your play??? What do you actually have to say for yourself, it's not the guy I've admired all these years. Maybe it's not you, but it's the Defenses being called by Babich/Smith???
And maybe your too much of a pro to blame them. I'd love to know though.
Lovie:
Lets see some passion man! Make the changes that need to happen druing the game, real coaches know how to make adjustments, show the world you area real coach.
We are better than this!
Still only three losses totalling 8 points. This team is totally capable of beating the Titans if for no other reason than because the world doesn't think so.
Rex:
He will do fine, when he plays loose. He can burn those D's if he fake pumps it might get rid of some of those batted balls. All, I've seen every game and Kyle has had plenty of batted balls this year.
November 4, 2008
#47 shonbear said . . .It is true. A Super Bowl loss aside, the Lovie Bears generally play better as underdogs. Case in point: Weeks 1 and 4.
It is astonishing that the 2008 Bears are a fourth quarter defensive letdown, a personal foul penalty in overtime, and a squib kick away from 8-0.
I mean, they aren't 8-0 material...well, the offense is. The Kyle Orton led offense definately is 8-0 material. But this is the worst defense since Dick Jauron and maybe since the 'Genius' Dave Wannstedt. It's abhorant and frightening to see Jake Delhomme (who I think is one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the league, leading the most overrated team in the league), Brian Griese, Matt Ryan, Dan Orlovsky, and Gus Ferrotte slicing through the defense like it's Glenwood High School's defense. Any Hall of Famers in that lot??
It's inexplicable to me. A laundry list of Pro Bowl quality players who just can't seem to get their shit together. Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman are the only starters with any passion whatsoever. Corey Graham and recently backups Craig Steltz and Zach Bowman showed a great deal of ability which makes me confident in the future. But I'm desperately groping for optimism with the present situation.
Isn't that how it always happens? Mike Brown makes a really big play. Then later in the game his ass is in the locker room and he's on the IR? Coach Smith apparently said it's a calf injury and it won't be season ending. Hell, Steltz seems like he's worth a shot. I hate to say it, but I couldn't care less if Mike Brown stays or goes at the end of this season. And I'm a few missed tackles away from saying the same about Brian Urlacher.
By the way...how 'bout Garret Wolfe? Man on fire!

#48 Al In WI said . . .OPTIMISM:
The Titans scoring average over 8 games is 25 a game, the Bears 28 a game (thanks to the Minnesota game)
The Titans average points allowed over 8 games is 13, the Bears 22 a game (again thanks to Minnesota)
What's this mean in it's simplest form?
Our average points scored is 3 higher than theres and allowed is 9 higher than theirs. There is only a six point difference on our two teams averages.
What are the anomolies?
Rex Grossman vice Kyle Orton would be the most glaring one.
-What if and I mean what if we all considered the possibility that Grossman with the so called over achieving line and such a great running back in the "Take your breath away Forte" (think about it...)
Grossman performed better than say September 2006, then what huh, then what, let's say he has a Sept 06 in Nov 08 and do it against the Defensive powerhouse of the Titans. All these booing fans would just say (in a deep chicago accent) ahh jest wait teeel next week huh, he's gaanaa feck it away, and I'll be rite dare to led im know, but go bears anyway eh!
The issue is this, watch some fucking film Turner and Hooch (T and B) see what is possible to get done against this Titans team and do it, I don't know, try some trick plays, flee flickers, hb passes, whatever, do one of those backward passes to Hester like they did against the Bills years ago when
Flutie should have gone to the SB.Since it's their Defense that might be the main problem besides their running game which doesn't really look spectacular, but good enough, we need to keep their D on the field and make some turnovers with our Defense, sustain some drives and get first downs! Also if I haven't mentioned it before, we need to get to the QB!!
I realy think this game is winable, not only that, let's get a QB contaversy going, how about if Grossman looks great for the next month, then what, we put Kyle back in their or stay with Rex, this would be a delight, when have we ever had two good QB's?
I know many of you think Rex sucks, but I would say that he is just an easy target, last year we were in the playoffs had some heartless receivers not dropped balls, our running game problems (name unspoken) and our Defensive injuries. Shit Rex wouldn't have even been benched if not for the dropped passes and again RT sucks as a play caller, why does he call a game differently for Rex than he does for Kyle, he rarely calls for Kyle to throw bombs in the endzone on first down like he does for Rex. Sure that might be one of his strengths, but if you put him in the shot gun like Tom Brady, he can see the field and the height isn't an issue. Both QB's have expressed that they love the shotgun anyways.
pant pant, ok rant done, I'm not voting for Rex or Kyle here, I'm voting for the Bears and I'm just saying that when was the last time we had a QB contraversy when there were two good QB's at the same time on our team. How nice that situation would be, because that would mean we were winning when Kyle returned rather than losing and longing for his return.
This would be the best scenario.
Another thing. When are the fans going to start booing the Defense for their "Good D, Bad D" inconsistance performances.
This D is a little emBEARassing to our heritage!

On the size debate the problem with Rex isn't that he is just 6 ft but that he is 6 foot, immbobile, and has ball control problems. Yah Brees is just as small but learned after his first couple seasons how to move a little and buy time, Rex hasn't shown that ability; also every pass Rex throws has arch, even screens, I only remember him throwing a couple of real good tight fastballs when needed. To me that is more where his smaller hands come in, he hardly ever throws a tight spiral even in warm ups. So yes you can be a good QB if you shorter but you have to be able to buy time and find lanes with your feet; while holding on to the football.shonbear, a Titans win will prove nothing for Grossman. He could go out and throw for 6 TDs and no picks and people will still boo if he comes in the next game and throws 2 picks. It is his inconsistentcy and poor decision making people are sick of. People weren't as much booing a poor throw to a double covered Hester as much as an easy completion for a first down to an open Forte that he overlooked. He either has poor vision or trys to do way too much all the time. He just can't seem to get the idea of taking what the defense gives you into his head; and because of it, I literally have to turn my head everytime he lets one fly deep; it makes me cringe. That is what the booers are sick of, he single-handedly makes it painful to watch a team that they love.
All that being said I do believe he can be a great QB in short stints and that his ability and knowledge of the O to make him able to hold this team together for a while. I just don't ever want to have to rely on him for a whole season again. And I totally agree that he has done nothing but act with grace and character through all this but in essence he has brought all of it on himself through inconsistent play and we won't get far starting the nicest guy at each position.November 4, 2008

I honestly think that, as sick as it sounds, some of our aging D superstars may be at the core of what's happening on D. I'm thinking about Brian U, Mike B, maybe even Ogun who has been VERY quiet this year, and Tommie, while not aging, has really been almost entirely absent. Having all four of these guys underperform this year has really changed the D.
I can only hope that B Patch, Lovie and Angelo see the same thing, and are capable of either coaching better play or shifting some players. Otherwise we may just have to accept a sub-par D this year, which as Shonbear points out, is totally emBEARassing and UNACCEPTABLE!

6) Devin Hester ALMOST broke one towards the end of that game - the horse collar was the only thing that stopped him - so he's revving up. (Looked like crap prior to that in that game, however)
7) Matt Forte!
8) Speaking of Matt Forte!, (that's my new nickname for him - just an exclamation point that follows him everywhere he goes) (I wish he was Hispanic, then he could be ¡Matt Forte!) (heyyyy.... that's kinda cool!)anyhoo... speaking of ¡Matt Forte!, Rex is going to LOVE what it's like playing with this kid, especially in his blitz pickups.
9) Rex is also going to love playing with our new line.
10) Did you see Chris Williams being worked in on special teams? I did! That's our #1 draft pick folks!
11) How about Craig Steltz's interception? That was alright! What else? There's more, I'm sure!
GO BEARS!

#57 bEnDeR said . . .#43- Great post. C'mon people, this is our team! Every play is not the perfect play, every game is not won, but damn, to boo ANY member of your own team? That's just not right. I can't imagine the pressure Rex is under and highly doubt any one here posting comments could rise to the occasion. Just give him the respect he deserves, because he is our QB, at least for the time being.

I totally agree with Ohio Bears fan. I'm good with Kyle. I also remember how great Rex can be. We weren't doggin Rex the first half of 2006 when he was off the QB rating chart at well above a hundred. He had a bad game against the Bengals that same year and has had a confidence problem ever since. Sure he makes mistakes, but who doesn't. All of you Rex haters must be perfect. Yeah, that's it. Couple that with the way 'so called' Bears fans treat him any and every time his name is mentioned is wrong! How 'bout a bit of encouragement? He's a Chicago Bear! Or does that mean anything to you!?! Showing some love will go a long way. It amazes me how quickly fanatics turn on their own when they are most vulnerable. I guess you want him to go somewhere else, come back to Soldiers Field and light us up like Greise did, huh? He did help bring us back against Detroit. Just think how the football world would've clowned us all behind that one. Friends, co-workers, Lions fans, etc. Now I know that has to count for something. Yo Rex, I got cha back man!!! You Got this!!!

Here at DaBearsBlog, you are free to kill us or the Bears as you so wish. You are not free, however, to be an asshole. So if you spew racism or ill-meaning foul language (cursing about football is just fine) or anything of that ilk, your comments ain't gonna last long, jerk.
