Let me put something to bed right now: I want to go to the playoffs. Even if we have to back in with an 8-8 record and a collection of tiebreakers, I want to go to the playoffs. Even if the Chicago Bears lose in the first round, I want to go to the playoffs. Playoff football is unlike anything else on the planet and I just like being a part of it.
And let me also say this...I still love Packer week. It jazzes me up. It puts a little more strength in my wrist as a lift those pints of American beer to my mouth. It might have a little less luster without #4 under center but I still hate that team. Still hate that city. Still hate the concept of placing cheese on one's head in support of a ballclub. So the question...
Will the Chicago Bears beat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday?
Yes.
Why?
I don't know.
And that's the plain truth. I think this Bears team is better than this Packers team but I have lost faith in this defense and lost faith in this defensive coaching staff. I believe we'll score Sunday and score often, especially with a returning Kyle Orton and a dessimated Pack defense eager to be gashed by the Double Deuce. But I wonder if we can stop Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver from moving the ball down the field at will.
That's it, isn't it? Stop the pass. Stop the other team from completing the ball whenever they want and you'll win. Rivalry week is going to come down to not allowing the Rodgers to do what the Griese, the Ryan and the Collins did - look like a future Hall-of-Famer. Stop the pass. That's it.
I'll assume that won't happen...and pick the Bears anyway.

#8 v in GH said . . .Yes we need the Bears traditions of smashmouth football.
Defense that puts fear into the opponent even on their own field. The crippling fear that they may not score a point against us. Knowing that it isn't a matter of if we will cause a TO and score, but when, and how many.
Steam rolling those running lanes open and getting enough pass completions to back them up and wear them out until their D is despondent and demoralized.
And ST giving up their bodies to give #23 that sliver of light so he can do what we all know he is capable of. I guarantee when he breaks that 1st one, that taste will be so sweet that he will be back to regularly finding a way to add to his legend. That fear of the cheetah will then have every ST we face the rest of the year cowering and nervous every time he touches that ball. The way it should be.

#10 Z said . . .That's a great post Jeff. I think we're all feeling the same thing, with a great exclamation point placed by Wayne Scott. Wayne, that's how I feel right now. It's not Opposite Day, it's Opposite Year for the Bears, and it has me feeling really woozy and weird and discombobulated. I mentioned it, but it bears repeating - I honestly almost turned off the game on Sunday, even knowing the game could easily turn out to be a win. And I never turn off Bears games (didn't do it this time either). But in a way this year, right now, feels worse than last year - last year we had a reason for the D to be so bad. We had optimism awaiting round the corner as we pinballed from QB to QB. We had the league's best ST unit and the league's most exciting player.
Now we should feel nothing but unbridled optimism on O - and I do, except for wide receivers and run blocking - but the D gives me depression that outweighs my O euphoria. Depression because we did some long term planning in the offseason, and I'm fearful that we both wasted our money and potentially handcuffed the team financially. Depression because, like Jeff, I have no faith in the defensive coaches (and it needs to be pointed out that the defensive coaches include Our Head Coach). Depression because the players I thought we had may not be the players we have.
And add to that, our singular shining star, the NFL Best Special Teams, have inexplicably turned into NFL Worst. Or something approaching that. Is it because we lost a few stellar ST players? Is it because we tried to make an otherworldly returner into an otherworldly receiver and in the process, made him no better than average at each? Is it because we stuck with a once-great punter for one too many years?
I'd give back our inexplicably great O for Chicago Bears D and for the league's best ST. Especially for the D.
Tied for first place, depressed beyond measure. Who'd a thunk it.

#14 JR said . . .You know in reality this is an incredibly sad year for Bears fans. For how many years did 54 and company step up and play smashmouth football even though whatever piece of shit was hiding at QB wasn't good enough to take advantage of it? How many games did the defense hold the opponents to under 20 and lose anyway, because there was no one on the other side of ball?
After all that, they finally get an offense, and not just any offense, but an offense that can beat you with the run OR the pass, a true NFL offense which could win most games as long as they are paired with an average defense, and what happens? The just stop playing defense. I am mystified, I truly am. I think they were better last year with the injuries. I just do not understand at all.
Here's the good news. Sunday hasn't happened yet. Note to the D - You haven't sucked yet. You haven't let Jennings run wild yet. You haven't given Rodgers enough time to have a smoke while he waits for his receivers to get open. You haven't been embarrassed. You haven't disgraced the defensive heritage of this team and it's legendary heroes. To this point the Pack has not scored a touchdown. Redemption is still within your grasp. I don't know what other teams say when confronted with a reality like that be for this team the mantra is clear:
BEAR DOWN.

#16 animal said . . .Well I am really hoping KO can go, like really. Maybe we start Grossman until half and see where we are.. I dunno. I really agree with all these posts, I am used to grimacing when Grossman takes the field but not when a healthy Bears D goes out there. Now it is hard to watch both sides of the ball.
I am really disappointed that the 4x stand at the goalline vs Philly wasn't more of a turning point for this D. Maybe we can just stuff the ball down their throat for 200yds on the ground and keep their O off the field. But for that to really happen our D has to limit 1st downs and force punts and ST needs to set us up with at least decent field position. If we play another whole game from our side of the 50 there isn't much hope.
At least TB should be able to beat up Minn and even if KO cant go, maybe the worst that happens is a 3 way tie for 1st and we get KO back for the stretch. All negativity aside I really think we should be able to squeak one out here.
Grossman:
29 -24 Bears (I am hoping for an int or fumble returned and a safety.)
Orton starts:
39-13 Bears (Orton keeps drives alive and the opposing O off the field. Oh and scores more :))November 13, 2008

"Bears quarterback Rex Grossman has a 3-0 lifetime record as a starter at Green Bay's Lambeau Field."
Oh, that was a home game...I see...clever bastards. Also, 2 of those 3 Lambeau games were in September. In the third he went 11 for 23 for 166 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. The difference in the game was, of course, a defensive TD. As most of our victories against GB recently have been. We need to get the football from them. That's the only way we win, especially with Grossman in there.

I bet Kyle Orton wanted to start the Titans game but the doctors wouldn't let him play, and he probably told Lovie Smith there's no way he wasn't starting the Packers game the next week.
Kyle Orton has assumed a position of leadership on the team and has been performing extremely well, there is no doubt that this offense plays better simply because Kyle Orton lines up at the helm. This year, Kyle at 80% is better than Rex at 100% not only because of their playing ability, but also because of their leadership ability as well.
It's going to be a bit strange for a while watching a number other than #4 line up behind center for the Packers, I began to really start to enjoy watching those turnovers flying from his hand...
I think you're going to see a change in the Chicago defense, but it's not going to be major. Lovie won't stray far schematically from the Chicago-2, but I think the change will have more to do with personnel and freeing up other players. The Bears are getting Danieal Manning back at the nickle position and I think it's going to be a big boost for the entire unit. The Bears could bring the linebackers further back into coverage to defend the short pass, and if the Bears can stop the run with their front 4, then the other players in the secondary are free either in coverage or to blitz. I don't think it'll be perfect, but we should definitely see some improvement... I hope.
