FIRST.

''This is a huge game,'' linebacker Lance Briggs said. ''It may not rank up there on some critics' boards as far as big games this week, but to us, this game is huge. I think that we're the best team in the league, and that's without a doubt. And when we choose to be the best team in the league, we'll be there.''

PROVE IT.

See all of you in Lambeau next week. Bring your Old Style and a crock pot of italian beef.

WCPF,

Long time no see. Nice to have some friendly rivalry going on. My prediction for the game is 23-20 Bears. What I want to see is Kerry Collins not playing well.

He is not a pro bowl quarterback and I am afraid the Bears are going to make him look like one.

Bear down baby.

Thanks for the welcome back Max and Decatur. I do think that the Bears will beat the Tittie Whities tomorrow...not feeling it for the Pack...but hoping for a victory for us.

Any way it shakes out...it makes next week's game looking like a fun one to watch.

Anybody going to the game tomorrow? My guess is that the boys from Tennessee won't be ready for the Chicago late fall flurries and blustery wind. Hard to believe that it was 70 degrees down there earlier this week.

This is our time. The Giants were 6-2 at this point of the season lat year, then they went on a road game winning streak that lasted about 12 games into this season (to include a SB). they didnt look all that spectacular. they just did it when it mattered all the way to that helmet catch. this could rally be us except I think our guys are better. its time to shine, lets take down some titans and follow it up with a packers domination on the road to carry us into the reast of the season and post season.

At week eleven and twelve last year we assisted the Redskins and the Giants into the playoffs when we could have won both games and gone into the playoffs ourselves, now it:s ur turn to allow the titans to assist us into some major momentum!

Bear Down!

So, I finally got around to watching the final IRL race on my DVR and scrolling at the bottom I see something about the Vikings Williams boys testing positive for a diuretic. Talk of a 4-game suspension?

http://grg51.typepad.com/steroid_nation/2008/10/minnesota-vikin.html

Hmmm. Included in the list is Grady Jackson on the Falcons as well.

I guess I would almost be disappointed if some of our guys weren't on steroids, but still, kind of bullshit. Hope a suspension is handed down by 11/30...that would be nice.

#11 Willie from Chicago said . . .

Ill tell you what, if we win this game, then we will be 6-3, and still have a 1 game lead over green bay or the vikings (who are playing each other today) and a 2 game lead of whoever looses that game. Im glad that Rex is leading us today. He has won big games before and he cane win this game today.

I really hope they show the game here in south Florida, if not i could always watch it on stoogetv.

we need more pressure on collins

November 9, 2008

November 9, 2008

#81 Max said . . .

Missed FG. 7-7 at half. I will take it. For the first time all year, we need to make some half time adjustments.

We get the ball to start the second half. I wanna see us do something with it. And we need to figure out how to get to the QB. Jesus

November 9, 2008

#82 shonbear said . . .

lots of defensive success, except on third down, we lose the special teams battle and offensive play calling is atrocious, should have gone for it on fourth down again when we got across the 50, it was only two yards which forte can get.

Lets see some major running game and play action pass will probably work if we would commit to the run, no committment means you just keep geving our d too many opportunities to fail and get tired. more turn overs would be nice

November 9, 2008

#83 animal said . . .

Honest question: Why is our pass Defense so bad? Seriously?
It was good with essentially the same guys a few years ago. Brown is healthy, Payne seems to be pretty good. Vasher and Tillman are starting, and we upgraded at nickle with Graham, who seems to be a future star.

#84 HesterFan23 said . . .

My thoughts after two quarters:

1) Matt Forte is really awesome....

2) Rex Grossman will never be a good QB in Chicago. He talked about inconsistency in his pre-game interview and about how he can fix it. He hasn't...

3) Is anybody blizting on any down other than third? Great run defense, but passing is looking terrible.

We need to do something right off the return and get the lead back. I hope the D has the same intensity.

November 9, 2008

#85 The Duke said . . .

it's time Vasher and Tillman started earning those paychecks. sweet Jesus! they're getting lit up by Kerry freakin' Collins. and how do we even let that last pass occur tothe sideline when the whole world knew it was going there. Bright spots, Forte and o-line. 2nd half domoination. Let's go. Bear Down!

November 9, 2008

#86 Max said . . .

Let me rephrase that, we have not made any half time adjustments this year, I am not sure why, but Lovie just seems incapable of it. But we need to turn that around and make adjustments this week. Somehow, someway, we need to make a couple minor changes at half. Like how to get to the QB. I didnt mean to sound like we havent needed to make half time adjustments, it just has not happened

a week of practice after not playing all season isnt enough to be at game speed or comfortable. If they start depending on the run, forte is going to break one.

As Jeff said though, Brad maynard is killing us in addition to the pass defense, why do they play so far off the receivers??? There is no QB pressure and not even any close calls for possible ints.

But finally, now we will be looking at a long field again, want to guess what the first play will be?

Tillman looks lost
Hester is tentative
Rex is terrible
Turner cant call a run play or get Forte involved the entire quarter after he had a big first half
Nobody on the D line can get off a block and knock old man Collins down.

ARRRRGH!! Such a win-able game, slipping away.

Rex needs to hit a couple of those deep balls in the 4th, redeem himself and give the D some help. He can do it, and Hester/Davis can get free.
Here's to hope, and 06 sequence:

#129 craig said . . .

Have only seen the second half, but unfortunately no surprises here:

1) Rex stinks.
2) There is still no pass rush. At all.
3) For that reason, every QB who plays us will have a QB rating over 100 and upwards of 250 yards.
4) Special teams is doing nothing this year.

Unless some kind of wierd miracle occurs we are toast. This has been all of last years worst offensive plays deja vu

The defense is awful? Not so sure about that. Their pass rush sucks, but they just held one of the best rush offenses in the league under 30 rushing yards.

How many do you think the Titans would have scored had they not started around the 50 every drive? I'd say you could at least take a touchdown away.

Orton starts this game and we're 6-3. No question.

Field position is what won the game for the Titans, i cant remember how many times we started inside the 10. In those situations you cant expect to score, instead the Bears should have worked to get out of that bad field position.

So Grossman pretty much sucked. But not as bad as our pressure on the QB and pass coverage. I swear a pee wee league team could pass up and down the field on us.

The good news: We should have beaten the last undefeated team in the NFL and only lost by 7. It was a non division and non conference game. No major injuries and a week closer to getting Orton back.

The bad news: We need to fire our Defensive Coordinator and the pee wee league thing.

Fire Babich. That crash right on third down was awful. I saw that play action coming a mile away.

Also, I'm not so excited about having taken away the Titans' running game because, umm, newsflash: WE CAN'T DEFEND THE PASS. Against ANYONE. It does no good to hold a team to under 50 yards rushing if you're gonna let up 300 yards passing every week. I've been saying it since the PRESEASON: Babich is the downfall of this defense. He's gotta go.

To the defensive line: no pats on the back. You should not be happy. As good as you've been against the run, you've been that bad or worse against the pass. You should be embarrassed, and angry, and hungry. Because you used to be talked about among the top D-lines in the NFL. Now, you're not even close.

To Rex, I've always rooted for you, man, but you haven't improved a lick since you entered this league. You haven't gotten more accurate. You haven't learned how to make better decisions. I don't care how long it's been since you got snaps with the first team. Your whole job is to prepare yourself to come off the bench and execute the offense. Bottom line, you're not very good at it.

To Lance Briggs, thanks for making the decline of Brian Urlacher a little more bearable, and for reminding us what we used to love about him.

To Peanut and Vash, I don't know what's happened to the two of you this year, but fix it. You get paid too much not to.

To Devin Hester: keep playing hard. It'll come.

To Greg Olsen: We knew you had it in you.

To Matt Forte: you're the single most important reason any Bears fan has any hope at all in this team. You're the People's Champ. Keep your head down and keep up the good work.

P.S. To Kyle Orton: Get well. Now.

rex wasnt great, but he was set up for failure with the offensive play calling. Kyle had a lot of innacurae passes his first few games out too. it takes time to get the timing of real game action.

This one isn:t rexs fault and there is no guarantee that Kyle would have done much better with that field position. Just think that ron calls the game differently with the two qbs, whether that is because their different skill sets is in question. Their skill sets dont matter if you hand the fucking ball off more.

Well we are now tied with the vikings, technically still in first place, but we need to win against the packers and fix our pass rush and pass defense, this is an embarrasment

What a punch to the gut that was. In many ways it was a microcosm of Rex Grossman’s career in Chicago. It began with so much promise, it moved ahead with some bad breaks (the int, tipped), then was about to come apart at the seems, then looked like it was revived only to come up short in the end. So very, very, bitterly disappointing.
While I don’t think he’s the reason we lost this game or even that he played that bad. He still had a chance to win the game for the Bears and didn’t come through. That’s the bottom line. And the reason is he’s playing scared. Not because he isn’t tough or is afraid to get hit, but because he’s afraid to make a mistake. He hesitated, he didn’t let it rip and as a result was often just off on his passes. But whatever, there is a good chance that was his final shot as a Bear and he blew it.
Today is also disappointing because the Bears have been exposed once and for all as a team with a fatal flaw. Kerry Collins isn’t the same player he was back with the Giants at the turn of the century. And he has what has to be the worst group of receivers in the entire league. But that didn’t stop them from absolutely torching the Bears defense today. That pass rush sucks, the one guy who could rush the passer this year Alex Brown hasn’t done anything in weeks. And Nathan Vasher’s career seems to be headed down the drain as well. What the hell happened to these guys??
The secondly the special teams of the Bears used to be one of our great strengths. Now it is a disaster! Maynard must go, period. It’s been a nice run but we can’t punt the damn ball 30 yards top every week.
Ugh, it looks like the Vikings have the division by the balls all of a sudden.

This team just drives me crazy this year. They really could be a very good team, but never put it all together. It looks more and more like they may tease us with a win here and there the rest of the season.

Grossman really sucked today. I'm not one to boo him, but I think today he probably deserved some of them. He missed some passes very, very badly that any average NFL qb should make. I just hope that if he plays next week up in Green Bay, he won't feel as much pressure since it won't be in Chicago.

Play calling was very suspect...especially in that third quarter. Need to get Forte the ball. He is your best player on offense, period.

Defense...great job stopping the run. Mike Brown was very effective around the line of scrimmage and Briggs had some big hits today as well. Terrible job getting a pass rush...terrible job covering anybody. I know the cover two only works well when you get pressure, but these receivers were wide open all game long. It's really a broken record at this point.

Three more things:
1. Graham looks more and more like a player each week. If Vash continues to suck, I wouldn't mind throwing him into the mix one bit.
2. Field position killed us all game and our special teams didn't do a very good job at all in this game in my opinion.
3. Why didn't Olsen stretch out to try and get the first down on that last drive? Looked like he had plenty of room to get the first but he just went straight out of bounds. As they say...it is a game of inches.

At least Green Bay lost. Let's hope our boys can find a way to win in Lambeau yet again next week.

Rex sucked, but Ron Turner kept having premature ejaculation, he needs to be more committed to the run before he tries to stretch the field with Grossmans rusty lack of timing and tentative arm and mind. Rex should have been able to connect on some of those plays and keep the drives alive (he even admitted that), I fully agree, but he has been on the bench the last nine weeks and Lovie and Ron know this, since they know that, then they should have kept the game in Forte's hands, especially after we were ahead by a touchdown. looking at the play by play:

This is what I have from ESPN's stats

Forte Carries

1st: 3
2nd: 10
3rd: 4
4th: 3

That's a commitment to the run??? ESPECIALLY WHEN IT WAS STARTING TO BE SUCCESSFUL!!!

37 pass attempts...

(Thank goodness some of those passes went to forte)

Time of Possession:

They had the ball about 7-8 minutes more than us.

The D finally did what they needed to do at the end of the game to give the offense one last chance, but this was really just a coaching failure.

It was coined in a previous string:

Who do you pick head to head:

Lovie Smith vs Jeff Fischer

Another game vs Bear alumni not won.

Positives today:
1. Whenever Forte handled the ball.
2. The stifling Bears run defense. Awesome, but ultimately useless.

Negatives today:
1. Lack of pass rush until late - in the 4th qtr. (Wale's sack)
2. Lack of pass coverage. With Vasher & Tillman starting, Collins' completion pct was .732 for 289 yards!
3. Complete breakdown in all phases of special teams.
4. A schizophrenic QB trying valiantly but unsuccessfully to execute the reduced gameplan he requires. RT could have helped by calling for Forte to run more than 20 times. We were generally successful running the ball.
5. Ineffective in-game/halftime adjustments on both sides of the ball.

Tonight's thoughts:
- The Urlacher shirt stays in the drawer next week. Well, maybe in the car so I can put it on at halftime IF he & the rest of the D are playing like advertised, for a change.
- We need Kyle to get well right now! We can't allow Rex to start in Green Bay. If Kyle can't go, start Hanie - at least he has mobility.
- Put a second KR back with Hester to keep teams from kicking away from him.
- I still prefer the Bryan Griffin version of the fight song.

Z: When your quarterback can't hit a 5 yard out route, there is nothing a coach can do. When your center falls backwards onto his ass three yards into the backfield on a 2nd and 1 as we're driving the ball there is nothing a coach can do. When your front four cannot penetrate a wet piece of cheap toilet paper (well, that is not the Titans O-line, but we'll pretend), there is nothing a coach can do. When your linebacking corps dances around like J-Lo prior to getting stood up by anything that comes remotely close to even touching them, there is nothing a coach can do (and I never did respond to that comment about how easy it is to stand up a linebacker...then, we need to run the 3-4 instead and play some of our young guys and actually let them rush the passer, does Miami run the 3-4? If so, all the linebackers who are near the league lead in sacks come from the 3-4 and they all rush from the outside...why is it that the inside linebackers run straight up the gut? And, when the do, why don't the outside guys use this knowledge to their advantage?).

What boggles my mind is that the front four penetrates well into the backfield on pretty much every single running play. I know there is a difference between run and pass blocking, but, man, that much difference? Seriously?

Anyone think it's just a pure coincidence that Jake Scott leaves the Colts and ends up on the Titans and now the Titans are the last undefeated team in the league? We should have got him. Seriously.

Our O-line is pathetic. I can't believe they didn't put in Chris Williams just to get him some playing time when it was 21-7. That game was like watching an '05 game. Watching all those punts made me want to throw up. Our special teams/defense couldn't get us past the shadow of our own endzone for most of the game. Grossman's hands can't handle the cold.

And for those of you who don't think that game mattered, we'd be "tied" with Tampa and Atlanta for a wildcard spot had we won that game. But I guess that doesn't mean shit.

Well we had 3 big issues:

1.) Porous pass D : this one is the most troubling because well, it's been there all season and we haven't been able to stem it. Stopping the run is great but if you allow 10+ passing completions all day it is useless.
2.) Lack of commitment to the run: we had time and opportunity, we simply chose not to take advantage of either. This one is somewhat glaring since in games where Matty has 100+ rushing we are 2-0 and if he is under 100 we are 3-4.
3.) Rex Grossman: man he is horrible. I am so sick of looking at him, he really showed today why they boo him before he can take a snap. He has no confidence in himself, his teammates have lost it, and his coaches have lost it. He is done. I would rather see Hanie, he can throw incompletions just as well I'm sure but he does have the upside of maybe learning from his mistakes. This one is of least concern because it is the easiest to fix. BENCH HIS AWFUL ASS.

So really as porous as our D was, we had a chance, a real chance to tie this thing and go into overtime with momentum; 2nd 1, with KO this is a playaction down, with Rex everyone knew you would run it and you did, they were ready and put you into 3rd and 4. So now the game comes down to Rex being able to complete a 5 yard pass and he gets two shots at it, he failed. All we needed was 4 more completions to win this game, a QB rating of myabe 75-80 and we win but the born loser goes out and can't manage a measley 70. Good lord we should have just kept Griese. We are in deep crap if KO can't get on the field this week.

Actually mike it kinda doesn't mean shit. Since a tie with ATL and Tampa means they get in and not us as we lost to both of them. Look I can pretty much guarantee one thing this season. 2 teams from the NFC North are not gonna make the playoffs. Whoever wins the division is it. I can't say if it will be 2 teams from the east or south, more likely 1 from each, but we are not gettin in without winning the division. That is what the focus should be. Yes a loss is a loss and the timing isnt great but if you looked at the season in the beginning and said the bears are going to be 11-5, and you get to pick your 5 losses; this would be your 1st or second pick for a loss.

I am so disappointed in this team. To me they are being almost unwatchable.

Mikeb, you are being way too kind to the coaches. You can't keep throwing up the same thing and expecting things to change. The only reason this game wasn't a blowout by the Titans was because of THEIR stubborness and stupidity - had they abandoned the run much earlier, they probably would have scored at least two more TDs on us.

Our combination of players and scheme on D is currently BROKEN. Maybe Babich can't be fired, maybe because everyone knows Babich is just the alter ego of Lovie. I don't know - I just know I have NO FAITH - NONE - in Lovie or Babich. Which makes it hard to watch this team right now.

There's only a few players I even like on this team any more.

I happily, fully, completely and unconditionally love Matt Freaking Forte. He IS the second coming. He is a reason to watch this team. Wish he could have had more of a role, but this time I do not put the offensive woes on Ron Turner. I do not. Truly, Rex Grossman was the sole reason (or as close to sole as you can get) for our offensive struggles. Had Kyle Orton been playing there is NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT WE WOULD HAVE BEATEN THE TITANS. None.

Not Rex's fault that Kyle's hurt, not anybody's fault, but I am very disappointed in Rex's performance. If he was the guy we were rooting for in the off-season (as many of us were), if he was the guy who turned around his career by some good performances at the end of last year (which us supporters thought he had done), if he was the guy who was unfairly treated in the supposed preseason QB derby (I wasn't one of those but many were), then HERE was his chance to show everybody that they were right for supporting him.

And THIS TIME, HE GOT PROTECTION! (Mikeb I don't know what you're talking about in talking about our "pathetic line" - they protected Rex ALL DAY!) He got protection and he could do nothing with it.

Bye bye Rex, you're done with us, if Kyle's not healed I WANT CALEB HANIE TAKING FIRST TEAM SNAPS THIS WEEK!

Other points. Marty Booker stinks. He's done. What in the Hades has happened to our third round pick, Earl Bennett? Are we in another Mark Bradley nightmare scenario? Can someone please stop this awful movie? You're going to tell me that Earl Bennett is worse than having Marty Booker in there? Why did we draft the kid?

I still love Matt Forte, Kyle Orton (franchise QB of the future), GREG OLSEN!!!, the 2008 Chicago Bears offensive line (at least the left side), Lance Briggs. That's about it. It's true - we traded the world's best returner for a mediocre receiver. It happened. I called it and it happened. (so did others) Bad decision!

Dave Toub - WHAT HAPPENED???? From best to worst? Cause we looked like the WORST special teams in the league yesterday. Brad Maynard - WHAT HAPPENED??? Didn't you just get a bunch of money?

Speaking of bunches of money - Tommie, please give it back. We were just kidding. Brian, please give it back. Devin, please give it back. Briggs, you can keep yours. Who else am I forgetting? Gould, you can keep yours, you've been pretty dang good this year.

I'm a really down Bear fan right now. Because even as I root f0r Kyle to come back, I just have no faith in our defense, and especially no faith in our defensive coaches. CAN WE PLEASE HAVE A COACHING FIRING, TODAY??????

PLEASE??????????????

Peanut: Actually, it does, now we're effectively two games out rather than one. Don't mean shit.

Phil: "You can't keep throwing up the same shit and expect things to change." That's a two way street. I'm sick of hearing about the defensive coaches. I'm more concerned about your other comments regarding Earl Bennett. But, with Grossman in there it didn't matter.

Pathetic run blocking. Forte is a fucking animal. He makes them look good. Our pass blocking is almost always solid. But we needed to run the football in that weather. Especially with our personnel (*ahem* Rex *ahem*). We couldn't do it. We couldn't move chains. There are teams in the league that gain over 10 yards on first down every so often.

I simply cannot fault the D for yesterday's game. Our offense couldn't generate more than a single first down on 7 consecutive drives (and I believe only one of those 7 actually wasn't a three and out or an INT). You can only expect so much from a defense.

Drive 1 - TD
2 - INT after two plays, D responds
3 - 3 and out, D responds
4 - 3 and out, D gives up TD
5 - one first down...D gives up some yards, prevent D on 3rd and 27
6 - 3 and out
7 - Start half 2 - 3 and fucking out, punt to 44 - D gives up TD, adjustments actually made by Titans? Or chalk it up to field position?
8 - 3 and out!
9 - 2 first downs!!!!!
10 - "3 and out" (after illegal contact penalty) - here the D gives up an 11 play drive...can you REALLY blame Babich? Seriously? You think he tells Vasher 'Hey, give those crappy receivers a BUNCH of cushion?'
11 - 2 first downs!!!!
12 - TD, D stops em
13 - in position to win...Kreutz loses game on 2nd and 1. Yes, that was THE play of the game with Grossman not doing shit more than 3 yards downfield they can sit on every fucking route we can think of in that neighborhood (because it's a short list!). Otherwise, we just keep running the fucking football and win the football game. Personally, I would have run the football on 3rd and 4, but what the hell do I know. Shit, I would have put in three tight ends, sans McKie, Hester out way wide.

Our special teams were TERRIBLE routinely giving them a short field. The 3 TD drives the Titans had started at the Chi 22, the Ten 44, and the Ten 48.

It was an all around bad game and in my opinion it was due mostly to Rex Grossman. There is no question in my mind that we win that football game with Kyle Orton at QB. This gives me hope. However, it pisses me off that the personnel on the field can't get up for a game like this. The special teams could have made a difference. If this is what they give us in the playoffs there is NOTHING the coaches can do. There was no fire. Marty Booker is a pathetic sack. That 4th down pass to Hester where Grossman stared him down? What a piece of crap route Hester ran. And what a piece of crap throw to go with that piece of crap 2nd and 1. The center cannot end up on his ass four yards in the backfield. That is just as poorly executed a play by a center as an interception thrown by a QB. Except for the center, nobody gives a shit. Except me, apparently.
