#101 The Ghost of Halas said . . .As a Packer fan, while I'm happy with the outcome, it's difficult to gloat. After all, we, like the Bears, are only a .500 football team. Although, right now, the Packers clearly have more overall talent. In my opinion, the Bears need an overhaul of management. Jerry Angelo has been complete CRAP building a team, has let his wide receivers all get away (the only deep threat is a talented d-back/punt returner who's still a year or two away from having the finesse to be a viable NFL wide receiver), has overpaid a defense that's now like a sieve (interesting comment today that the Bears have three defenders - Briggs, Urlacher, and Harris - who are all making "top level QB" income), and has generally manhandled his GM duties. You can't have an offense that relies on a game manager QB (well...Orton IS a little better than that), a good young RB and two decent TE's and hope for any type of season long success. To add to matters, Lovey has the inspirational leadership skills of a Dick Jauron WITHOUT personality. I know and love a lot of Bear fans - all loyal like most of the bloggers on this site - and they (and you) deserve better for that loyalty. The McCaskeys should sell the team to someone who will bring in a competent group of people (like Finks, Vainisi, etc. - the old man's final successful legacy) and give the people of Chicago something to really root for. Sure, I'm satisfied with this win. What Packer fan wouldn't be? But, I've always thought Angelo was a weasel and would love to see him have his smug ass handed to him. Now that would make today's victory even sweeter.
November 16, 2008
#102 animal said . . .You see, the problem with a "regime change" at Halas Hall is that the McCaskeys usually go for the cheapest candidate for the position. It would be quite something to come up with Bill Cowher and he would be wonderful at building a winning franchise. I just don't see anything ever happening with the Lovie 'Scheme.'
I think teams have figured it out.
I think players are not playing at an effective level necessary for the Lovie 'Scheme' like they did in 2005 and 2006. It's like the old 46 Defense. It's a beautiful idea, but it takes a laundry list of pro bowlers and hall of famers to pull it off. The Lovie 'Scheme' is just unwieldy with this crop of players. They simply are not good enough to apply pressure up front, nor to protect against the pass, and are inconsistent against the run.
I seriously think, if the Bears do not make the post-season this year...clean house. Angelo, Smith, Babich, and maybe Turner. We can sit and deny it all we want, but this franchise is desperately in need of a rebuilding...Wide Recievers, Defensive Linemen, Defensive Backs, Offensive Linemen, Fullback, Linebackers within another year or two.
When we woke up this morning, Chicago was the best team in the NFC North. When we go to sleep tonight, we might see that Chicago is merely third best in the NFC. Though the Bears defeated the Vikings, I do not believe Chicago to be the superior team. Good football teams become better as the season progresses. Bad football teams wilt as cold weather approaches. What has Chicago done?
Excellent wins against Indianapolis and Philadelphia gave-way to heart stopping defensive defeats against Tampa Bay, Carolina, Atlanta, nearly Minnesota, and nearly Detroit. The only offensive shortcomings came against Green Bay and Tennessee.
Just rebuild...

#117 chicago area packer fan said . . .I can't believe how much worse this was than I even imagined it could be. The only thing good about it, the actual score reflected the real and true ass-beating we endured out there. There's no faking our way out of this one, no orange-colored glasses to put on.
I don't want to break down the game. What's to break down?
This Bears team is broken. Nearly all decisions made by management have been shown to have been bad ones - and while I have been a reasonably strong fan of JA, I now have to say it's a lot of his decisions that have gone wrong that both doomed this season and potentially handcuffed us going into the future.
To me the question isn't about Lovie Smith - he sucks beyond all suckage, he's been a complete failure in the two seasons since the Super Bowl, and he needs to be gone - NOW. Him and ALL his minions, including Ron Turner. A new regime needs to be installed - the sooner the better.
The real question is about Jerry Angelo. Does he go too? I would argue yes. The decision to sign Tommie and Lance and Hester were good decisions - in one case it's working out, in one case it's an utter failure, and in the last case it's a case of shooting yourself in the foot by trying to change the one perfect player at his position you had.
But the bigger and completely preventable bad decisions were the non-moves - no free agent o-lineman signings doomed us to the horrible run blocking line we saw today. There were people available - but Jerry deemed them too expensive, possibly overrated. The pass blocking has been exceptionally overachieving this year, but like the one-dimensional D, it's not enough to be a good pass blocking unit if you can't push a defender back for one yard when you're running it.
The next huge non-move was not going after an impact wide receiver, after losing Berrian. Trotting out the still extremely raw Devin Hester, the smell-of-rotting-flesh on his decomposing body Marty Booker (that was cold but Marty's about as effective as Bernie from Weekend at..), and B-level standout Rashied Davis as your receivers, well it's been proven that it doesn't work. Brandon Lloyd turned out to be a good move - too good, in fact, in the dysfunctional Lovie regime, because it caused him to be sat in the doghouse. When they finally inserted him I think he caught the first pass of the game by a wide receiver, IN THE THIRD. Of course after that he was yanked.
And if Matt Forte hadn't worked out as great as he did, we could be talking about the non-move of signing a free agent RB. But those two above, to me they are the reason why Jerry gets thrown on the same trash heap as Lovie, Patch, and RT.
It sounds sick, and there will be screaming and accusations of non-fandom, but I'm afraid we've reached a point in the season where the limited success we can hope for is not worth the chance that this regime stays. We need to start the Hire Cowher bandwagon right now, and losses will help. We will beat the Rams next week because they have truly quit. And the Texans - another win if we want it. We could, in fact, beat all the teams remaining on our schedule. I guess that would be a good thing. I don't like where I'm going here - I just know this team is really hard to root for right now. I said it after last week - I love a couple of players on this team - the rest, I wonder where their heart is. The coaches, I want GONE NOW.
I will again be surprised if Lovie doesn't make some moves - surely if the heat was on last week, he's boiling in the pot this week. Is this Fire Babich week when Lovie takes over the D? I would if I were Lovie - I think it's the only way he could save his job at this point. It probably won't work, but doing nothing will surely get him fired.
By the way, RT stunk in this game too - reverting to his norm. That 3rd and 1 call to Forte in the middle of the line was terrible, and you could see Orton venting on the sideline after. Can we go ahead and dump the screen pass - not the good kind, just the one that goes right behind the sorry ass of Olin Kreutz, apparently the only kind they call? You know the one - the one he's called all season, that hasn't worked ONE TIME? And shame on all of you fuckers for not putting Lloyd out there, every play, both last week AND this week. YOU ARE NOT HELPING THE BEARS WIN. Just like last year's inexplicable personnel decisions.
Nope, it's time for you all to pack your ragged bags and leave.
JUST LEAVE!

#118 NittyGritty34 said . . .As a follow up to Phil's comments on Hester,
The packers has a pretty good return guy a few years back, you may remember him, Demond Howard - superbowl MVP. He was also a game changer, not as good as Hester maybe - but good.
He insisted he was a receiver and when the Pack would not promise him a starting slot he signed with Oakland, do you remember his Raider receiving career???
Hester is a phenom as a returner. He is a C+ wide out and in games where he does both he does nothing as a returner.
Hester's impact this year has been minimal. Last year he was the most feared player in the league.
Just a friendly observation from the other side...

Then we will be the laughing stock of the league if we're not already. I just thank god I don't have any packer friends. Fuck it all! I am now diverting all of my emotional fanhood to the Portland Trailblazers. I hate this day.

#121 zmac said . . .We've all heard of cases where players quit on the coach.
But in the Bears' case this year, did Lovie quit on the team? Is he anticipating a job he'd prefer (wild guess: Dallas?) because with his bad clock management and no changes EVAR at halftime this year, he seems completely preoccupied, burned out, or expecting this is last year for Chicago.

#128 Brian from WI said . . .Lovie Smith needs to leave Chicago. There'e plenty of openings: Dallas Cowboys in 7 wks., Tennesse Volunteers, Syracuse Orange, Oakland Raiders, U of Washington, etc. And so does Bob Babitch. And Jerry Angelo. And Ron Turner. And Brian Urlacher. And Tommie Harris. And Rex Grossman. And Nathan Vasher. And Hunter Hilllenmeyer. And Jason McKie. Devin Hester is still salvageable. I was against his conversion to wideout. It's been tried before, numerous times, and failed. Use Hester ONLY as a return man and he'll be good again. Orton is also salvageable. He knows the system, and he's not horrible. Would you rather Orton or Shaun Hill? Marc Bulger? Brodie Croyle? Matt "Unhealthy" Shaub? Sage "The Real Human Turnover" Rosenfels? Nuff said. Forte is great, but fewer carries per game. At this pace he'll be burned out in five yrs. We need to take advantage of the fact we have 4 backs on our roster. Yes 4 backs. Every time Garrett Wolfe touches the ball, good things happen. He's workable in the backfield, kind of like a Maurice Jones-Drew. The o-line is a couple of seasons away from collapse. So is the defense. We have no clear receivers. This team is...dare I say it...fucked. At least until we start drafting better, and make some crucial changes.
P.S. Dear Bears Nation:
Don't give up on this team. Never give up on your team. If the Lions can still have fans, if the Rams can still have fans, we're a lot better than either club. This is a proud club with proud fans. Write Jerry. Write Lovie. Write Mrs. McCaskey. Tell them how you feel. We have to let those a-holes know this isn't a joke. This is a team, with millions of fans. Fans who'll do anything for the love of this team. It's up to you. It's up to us.

#141 enderwiggin said . . .Ok, I shouldn't even be up this late, reading comments off of blogs, but, here I am....with all due apologies.
First, thanks to Brian of WI for reminding us all that thalydimide was indeed a horrible thing. I need to cut a check to charity or something...
GB didn't win, we flew to Wisc. and gift wrapped all 4 quarters. I agree with the Hester-back-to-returner comments. He was great, now, he's just some guy we're paying millions to to run around. Urlacher, in my opinion, hasn't been worth his starting slot for two seasons, period. Great while he lasted, but his day came and went a long time ago.
The coaching staff? Tell me, what would happen if tomorrow, we just swapped the whole coaching staff out with the Raiders - would anyone from either franchise even notice?
I don't mind losing - even if it is to GB (ugh) - but my GOD - we have no identity anymore - it's gone. We don't even hit people. Urlacher spends more energy bitching about fans booing Grossman than he does making runners regret meeting him. I think I'd respect him more if he just announced that he doesn't want to play anymore, and got a job as a bouncer at his favirite strip club.
Our running game is barely adequate, and our receiving corps play as though they'd rather be on the practice squad (Greg Olsen is the exception - man, he has GOT to be really pissed), and Orton, god love him, must be wondering if he should have tried as hard to beat out Grossman.
Mike Brown told the media tonight that the defense isn't who they think they are, and that they deserve every low rating they get.
I'm really, really sorry I have to give props to him for saying what his coach doesn't have the guts to admit.
I think maybe we borrow Marinelli's "sharp shovel", and bury a lot of contracts we never, ever should have agreed to extend.

#144 Z said . . .I would like to restate my case that this loss was easier to take than the Atlanta, Carolina and Tampa Bay losses. Merely because those games I think we should have won. They were close enough to create that sense of false hope, in all of us, that we were better than I thought we were.
Then you have the Tennessee game, I had stated that they abandoned the run, every time they would get a good run, they would try to shoot their wad with a big play which would be a drive staller.
Again this week, we had some success with the run and abandoned it in an attempt to shoot the wad for the big play again, letting the gimpy QB (still maybe performed better than Rex would have, who knows) "manage the game, the only real success we had was in the run, Rex could have handed the ball off just as good as Kyle.
The loss was for everything (all phases), but at the least if we keep some drives alive, we can keep their offense off the field and rest our defense, now break down of time of possession.
Their offense had the ball for more than 15 MINUTES LONGER THAN OUR OFFENSE!!!! THAT IS MORE THAN A WHOLE FUCKING QUARTER!!!
Really?!? We handed the ball to Forte only 20 times!!!
Losing by 34 points to the hated Packers will at the least draw some attention to these issues and something will change, they have no choice, they will have to change something, right???
So we all talked about them giving up some to the run game to stop the pass, well they paid half attention to that byallowing Grant over 104 yards in ONE HALF!! The pay off was supposed to be more pressure on the QB and passing game right??? Oh Brian got that turn over, that was it, what did they do with it? 3 and out, cant get a first on 3rd and 1 again!!
Props to Mike Brown's media comments, he said the truth, it's good to see somebody on that team has the integrity and moral value to state the truth!! He said it, "we are not the same defense of the past". Reading between the lines, I think he was also telling the team themselves that they think more highly of themselves than they ought to.
Good Job MB, how about some of that from BU, TH or God Help me, even Lovie Smith!
Now what?? Where do we go from here?

November 17, 2008
Very nice Albert and pathetically true.
I would mention the day TJ had over 100 yds and a score but our stud RB has a little problem (his run blocking couldn't get push against a line of air mattresses). Imagine those 2 making D's miss all day. Oh well. You are a genious JA and you too Lovie.
Lovie's only chance to get this team playing for him is to fire Babich and officially take over the D. Even if he is already running it, just psychology to show the team that there has to be consequences for failure on that grand of a scale might have some positive effect. It certainly couldn't make things worse.
