I'm less than twenty-four hours from boarding a boeing for Bearsland to take in what will be a season-defining, primetime ball game. If anyone is interested in stopping by and handing me a full cup of Old Style. I'll be in section 231, Row 11 on the aisle. The Reverend will be here for a brief post-game tomorrow night and Phil from SATX should be around for a Friday column. I'll be back for hands-on coverage of Minnesota's upcoming loss in the desert sun.
The Bears are going to win tomorrow night. Here's how:
1. Ron Turner and the Bears offense are going to come out of the box throwing the football (which I understand flies in the face of your typical bad weather game plan). Look for KO to dissect a bad Saints secondary with a series of underneath routes to the tight ends and Devin Hester crossing patterns. The last time the Bears played a game like this - 2005 against the meteorologically over-matched Falcons - they threw on four of their first six plays. And that was with shitty Orton. And they completed none of them. That changes tomorrow night.
2. I can't shake the image of Drew Brees taking that NFC Championship Game intentional grounding penalty a few years back. This is arguably the third best player at his position and it cost his team any shot at playing for a Super Bowl. I don't think the Bears defense will have tremendous success rushing the passer - no one does - but I think they'll force Brees into one or two game-costing mistakes. The question is who will do it. Odds: Israel Idonije 5-2, Alex Brown 3-1, Adewale Ogunleye 5-1, Tommie Harris 6-1, Brian Urlacher 7-1. (Put your money on #54)
3. To quote never-gonna-leave President Bush, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me...can't get fooled again." I will sit in stunned silence Thursday night if Lovie allows Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush to gain yards on the ground. David Haugh wrote about it today and he's right on point. Brees can chuck it all over the field if he wants but if the Saints can't run it, they won't win. Plain and simple.
4. We have the best player on the field. And there's double deuces on his back.
The score...

#9 The Ghost of Halas said . . .I'll tell you what, try to find a decent Saints blog out there to see what fans are saying - on second thought, don't waste your time. They don't say ANYTHING. Just a bunch of guys posting articles with zero comments.
We are truly lucky, Bear Fans, to have this site! This Saints team doesn't seem to be nearly the match of the 2006 team that we dismantled in the Championship Game. And I will agree that that was the greatest game for the Bears since January 26, 1986. Thanks 'Aints for your participation.
Looking for this one to be the next best since that one. The Saints appear to be one of those teams with a lot of talent that don't put it together, especially in big games. We won't have the advantage of the two guys being out, which is just fine - let's beat them full strength. Kyle was at that game in 2006 and you know he wanted to be playing in it - now he has his chance.
Even The RB Who Shall Not Be Named had great moments in that game. The one who SHALL be named (¡FORTE!) will merely add to his growing legend. Some team in a recent game (maybe the Steelers) did a formation where they lined up two tackles together for a running play - I'd love it if RT got creative and did something like that. Put a bunch of meat out there and see how Forte takes advantage of it. Here's one thing I'll say about Forte - give him a favorable situation and he'll ALWAYS take advantage, give him a crappy situation and he'll do better than most.
Can you imagine how good this kid could be with a great offensive line? The mind boggles. And the heart desires.
Like Z, I'm excited. I think this team is ready to coalesce and punch themselves forward.
TOMORROW IS ON.

Special teams will be very critical on a cold night in Chicago. Maynard played his part last week...let's hope he does again this week and that he is joined by Skunk and Manning to help the Bears dominate field position. Our coverage teams need to be wary of Bush as well.
Offense, please put points on the board against a crappy Saints defense...and Bears defense, please make the Saints earn every point they get and force a couple of turnovers.
Enjoy the game tonight everyone. Here's to going into an extended Packer week fat and happy with a win over the Saints.

Anyway, if we win tonight and the Vikes loooooooooooose Sunday I'll be more amped, but I'm still gun-shy about this team.
Luckily after this season this will be known as Orton and Forte's team. If the D wants respect they can earn it. Those two have done it with almost no help. Forte has a mediocre line and Orton has a bunch of WRs that look like the Keystone Kops after a couple beer bongs.
Trade or cut Wale, move Izzy to DE, cut or trade Vasher and aquire Boldin and, you heard it here, ALBERT HAINSWORTH.

This morning is actually pretty mild and they are saying the high temp will be above freezing. Now, come game time when the sun goes down it will be cold no doubt, but I would not expect a repeat of 2005 vs Atlanta. Frankly, I don't think the temperature is as big of a factor as the field conditions. For a reason that has yet to be explained to me, the Bears ground crew is incabable of keeping an NFL quality surface....we have without question the worst grass surface in the NFL. I almost think my neighbor is leading a double-life as the head of the Bears ground crew (Yes, I had to install a 6ft privacy fence to block the eyesore that is his "lawn"). Anyway, I could see the saints WR getting very frustrated very early with their inability to get good footing and make sharpe cuts. Plus, when you throw the ball 35 times a game all you need is 1 WR to slip on his cut and suddenly the ball is thrown right to the chest of #21 with nothing but green (or shit brown) between him and the goal line. Look for the field condition to be a major topic on the broadcast and a bigger factor than the cold.

#35 Reverend Dave said . . .This was fun stuff to read.
Mike is the hands-down pound-for-pound all-time Da Bears Blog villain. What some of you folks may not know is that while he purported to be a 43 year old Most Pompous NIU Grad in History, Jeff actually outed him as a much younger imposter (like teens). So he got banned, which although we all hailed at the time, now and then we miss him, he was like one of those sores on your tongue you perversely like to poke at. (I'm sorry, is it just me who does that?)
The funny thing about Mike was he was obviously precociously intelligent and actually had very good takes, albeit nearly always negative. And his slams at the entire Da Bears Blog universe were pretty dramatic and all-encompassing, and in the end, funny.
Do you remember a certain NIU alum on our roster that he repeatedly referred to as "105 pounds soaking wet" (not sure about the exact poundage). I think he liked to use the phrase "drool monkeys" to describe us a lot - or maybe I have that a little wrong - anyone? But he loved to repeat phrases over and over again, giving us the feeling sometimes that he was a cleverly built robot replicant sent to torment us.
I actually do miss Mike.
Early PO'd used to fling out the Fair Weather Fan appellation (even to the extent of it becoming a known acronym - FWF), and I actually got in a blog-scream-a-thon with him about "how dare he call me that" and whatnot - I was even pissed off about it while not on the blog that day, until I realized how silly that was.
Unfortunately it turned out that what he meant was that anyone who didn't agree with his passion for Rex was a FWF. And I believe that when it became obvious, even to him, that Rex was not what he thought he was and that Kyle maybe was the real future of the franchise, he left. He's a real Bear fan, not just a Rex fan, but I think at that point he perceived a future filled with "I told you so's" and decided to take his marbles and go home. And I will comment that I don't believe the poster showing up as PO'd with very short comments recently is actually him - although Jeff would know that.
Pack is Back was pretty brutal. But we had good wars with him.
Posters I miss -
Obviously Midway. What a funny, passionate dude. Don't know why he vacated. Hope he still roams the earth.
When I first began posting in the second half of the 2006 season, there was a guy named Still on here that loved to do Haikus and Zen koans.
Bill shows up now and again, wish we heard more from him.
Jdawg, although he posted today, needs to post far more often. He's nearly always very terse but always on the money and usually very funny.
Nicole and Megan used to post quite a bit - it was nice having at least a few diehard female bloggers out there. Max in Hawaii used to post a lot more too - school must be taxing him.
I know there's more but I'm not going back to research.
Kind of fitting that we're doing a little "Ode to the Blog" talk while Jeff is heading to our version of Mecca.
Good stuff.

#37 Phil from SATX said . . .Great point Brian - the shitty field hurts both teams when trying to make plays, but has to hurt them a lot more than it does us.
I see this as the defining game of the season. Because the season hasn't yet been defined, at this late stage. Can we go on a run, even if we haven't for well nigh on two full seasons? Is the D actually coming together with different parts - or is the great play of the last game just because of a crappy opponent? Is Albert in Tucson right? Or is this when the Bears team melds together with our pre-season expectations on D and ST realized coupled with the way-better-than-expected O?
Let's all hope the answers are yes, yes, no and yes.
But to me all the intangibles in this game point to the Bears.
BEARS 34 SAINTS 17

But the questions surrounding this game make it enormously interesting - so much of the near-term future of the franchise may rest on this.

#39 Rob said . . .It's always seemed a little special when my bears play on Monday night (and now Thursday night). They are one of only two teams playing that day, and I have the whole damn day to agonize/look forward to it.
I remember when I was but a teenager, in the late eighties, towards the end of Da Era, and towards the end of Mike Singletary's great career. I would go to junior high school with my usual bears hat, and spend the day thinking about nothing but football. Nothing could get me down on those days (at least before the game). I felt like a kid who was dating the hottest girl in school, and it was only a matter of time before everyone found out. It always feels a bit like Christmas eve on Saturday nights, even when Da Bears are not competitive. I love the NFL that much. But Monday gamedays seemed extra special.
Now here I am, 33 years old and still in school, agonizing over my PhD that I'm trying to get, and the only thing that's changed is there are now games on Thursday night. So I'll be sitting here all day, knowing that I should be working on my mathematics so I can get the hell out of here, wanting all the while to just go home and watch 8 hours of pregame. Wishing I could just sit here at my desk and read Da Blog and other bears news around the web, waiting like a kid on Christmas eve. Only I don't have to go to sleep for Christmas to come.
When it comes to my passion for the bears, I'm still that same pimply little twerp with a bears hat, going to school, feeling like in about 8 hours, I'll be the only person in the world, doing exactly what he wants to do (besides you guys of course (sorry animal-Christmas is being taped for you!)).

"My time there was short," Benson said. "I sat for two years. The third year I was hurt. The fourth year, this year, I got cut before the season. The fourth season was going to be my time. It looked like we would have had a 1-2 punch with me and Forte in there. He would have gotten the ball and that would have worked for me.
"He is having a great year, but when I see the highlights, I see holes. I see them using him in the slot, something they didn't do with me. If I was there right now with the holes I see, I'd probably have 1,800 yards right now. I definitely would have 1,500 by now. I congratulate him on all of his success. He is taking advantage."WHAT A DIPSHIT!!! THANK GOD HE IS A BENGAL NOW!!

But as for the play-offs I am worried. Oh we can go 3-0 from here, no problem. My worry is we shouldn't be in this spot, ie, needing to go 3-0 JUST TO HAVE A CHANCE. You know how the world works. When you get in a spot you know you shouldn't be in, you get burned. You park your car on a street with no lights someone will break into it. You leave a glass too close to the table's edge it will get knocked over. You wait too long to put gas in your car you get caught in a traffic jam. Don't do the dishes for a week and company suddenly drops by. So I worry the Vikes will win 2 out of 3 and close us out, just because we shouldn't be in this spot.

Then they took him to the locker room and said he was "doubtful" for a return. Next thing you know he is back out on the field playing again. I LOVE THIS GUY!

Yeah that pass was behind Davis but you have to knock it down if you can't realistically catch it.
Davis has not been having good things happen around him lately.
Well that fucking sucks. Nobody wants to tackle. We can't afford turnovers. They always take advantage. We needed to close these fuckers out. Come on O. Redeem yourself.

#107 BillyBear said . . .This was playoff football at Soldier Field in Week 15. Manning set the tone. The D stepped up. Alex Brown, where have you been all season? Orton redeemed himself. Gould is money. Go Falcons. Bring on the Pack.
The dark side of this win is that Matt Forte might not be Matt Forte for the last two games of the year. Toe injuries can bite. And we'll need 22 vs. the Pack.

December 12, 2008
#115 animal said . . .three things kept this game from being a bears blowout win:
1) the drops. wtf. clark. even forte. and how bad must bennett be if davis is still out there?! what happened to shied?!
2) the playcalling. get the ball back with 5 minutes left needing a few first downs to basically put it away, hell even a three and out and a punt would have been nice assuming you run some clock...and they throw on the first two plays? orton throws a bad pick there but no way you can pass on both those downs.
3) the refs. come on. the fake punt reception, which cost the bears not only a huge first down but a key timeout. the PI on olsen that would have led to a regulation win. olsen not being called out of bounds that cost a timeout and hence and extra play. olsen's spot getting moved back, costing another play. at least the bears won the coin flip.
overall, a win against a team as strong as that is on offense is a good one, esp with the saints backs against the wall. we may have a defense back which would be pretty sweet, rest up for the cheese!

#117 mikebdot said . . .The saddest part of this win is that it's our most impressive victory since late September. Yikes.
Orton blows, he has completely reverted to his old self since the bye. I'm willing to declare that his hot streak of October was just a fluke.
Hester was open all night on the deep post pattern but Orton couldn't get the ball close to him. Over throws and then under throws. I don't believe he completed a pass over about 8 yards all night.
I don't give him a break on the first inteception for two reasons. 1) the pass was behind Davis, and 2) earlier in the quarter he threw a pass right to Vilma and it was dropped.
The second interception was just brutal. And finally was he trying to lose the game by taking a sack with 7 seconds left?? Douche.
Quarterback is a major weakness on this team, yet again.
The defense was back to it's old self tonight too, only that is good news. I loved the effort from the front seven tonight! All the right guys came through, Urlacher, Brown, Brown, Briggs, Harris, Wale, they all stepped up.
Go Cardinals.December 12, 2008
#118 mikebdot said . . .Al: Taking the sack was a smart play. If he had forced a throw into the endzone, bad news. If he had thrown the ball away between the tackles, he risked getting called for intentional grounding and putting Gould in a crap position.
That whole last 50 seconds was a fucking disaster. They should have called their first timeout with 50 seconds left at the 25 yard line. It would have allowed them all sorts of options. Getting a first down over the middle of the field. Test the corners of the endzone. Running the football up the gut. A screen. Anything.
Our clock management under Lovie Smith has been atrocious. He's truly a stupid man. Though, I can't say that I ever remember being satisfied with our clock management in my brief history as a human being...

#119 Albert In Tucson said . . .Incidentally, I can always take pride in the fact that the only thing I've gotten right consistently about the Bears over the past few years is that Olin Kreutz sucks. He makes way too many mistakes for a center.
December 12, 2008
#120 Albert In Tucson said . . .Whoops. I think Rashied Davis just dropped another pass.
December 12, 2008
#121 Albert In Tucson said . . .If the Bear receivers drop only HALF as many passes as they so far, have Orton has about 3 more TD passes , fewer interceptions and a QB rating in the 90s. AND the team probably 2 more wins.

#122 johnnyelpaso said . . .For sure it's time for Rashied to have a "pee-pee" test.
December 12, 2008
#123 mikebdot said . . .how sweet it is to wake up the next win and have a victory under our belts.........on prime time and we get a win in overtime......orton had an exceptional game........he had 2 picks put i hold him accountable for only 1......rasheed davis sucks and should get cut............the 2nd pick was his fault...........the defense played there asses out....thats the defense weve been waiting for.......manning is growing up in the nfl.........hes playing with heart......overall this was a great win for the bears.....LETS KEEP IT ROLLING!!!!!!!!!!!BEARDOWN AND MAN UP BEARS...
December 12, 2008
#124 Rancid said . . .That second pick by Orton was a huge mistake, but at the same time, running a short route in that situation is quite possibly the most predictable thing I could possibly think of, outside of, you know, running the fucking football. Using the horse that is Matt Forte to your advantage. It's as though Ron Turner thought Cedric Benson was in the backfield. No, Ron, it's 22, not 32. Don't worry.
When will we stop putting a fullback in the game? We don't have one. AP can be a fullback. Seriously folks. He is getting BIG.
December 12, 2008
#125 Rancid said . . .Al - I don't agree with your assessment of Kyle but I'm glad you're still here. I miss PO and you're kind of the only link since you guys were on the same page concerning our QBs. I still think KO is a bit hobbled. He did throw two shitty picks, (including the one that was dropped) the other one is all on Davis. If you factor in the percentage of the good passes dropped Kyle looks great and he looked great on the drive we needed him to. I think the fact that KO came back so quickly and is preferred over Rex even in an injured state speaks volumes to how good a fit he is for this team. I think Rex still has the potential to be a good QB and hopefully his agent can land him in a position where he will be on a team with a good oline. I do think that KO has become the Bears starter for the next few years though and I am pleased with that.
I've actually been ok with Babich Patch of late. I thought that he called a decent game. Most of those big play thrid downs appeared to me to be player error with the exception of a couple where he should have called blitzes. Also, all three NO TDs come off offensive snafus, so I'm happy with the Defense.
RT on the other hand called a shit second half AGAIN. Yet another game where at halftime the defense adjusts to a good 1st half plan and RT simply keeps plowing away even though his game plan is no longer working. I think RT must have been a seldom used fullback in high school or something because he is for some reason obsessed with using the fullback, even when its the backup. Stop doing that! The only time we get a good drive in the second half is when the clock forces us to get outside the way he called the whole game. I can't understand why the guy is simply incapable of adjusting anything. I always have and always will desire the end of his career in Chicago.
Overall, a good win that we needed. Now we all take the oath as Cardinals fans for Sunday. Also, much thanks to Willie for introducing me to the simpsons. Bear Down

Game ball to Manning, who apparently has a girls name, and is ok with that. You know, I was expecting our second son to be a girl two, but I didn't name him Anna anyway. I came up with a boys name. Hell, I don't care what his name is as long he keeps running them back.
