Still Packer Week

Monday, December 15, 2008 | Jeff

I know everyone wants to break down the playoff scenarios until you've memorized the schedule strength of half the NFC. The playoffs are the goal and I understand that. But it's not complicated. You want the Bears to win and the Vikings, Falcons, Bucs, Cowboys and Eagles to lose. Simple, right? But let us now be honest. The least complicated way for the Bears to move into the postseason is for Atlanta to beat Minnesota in what will be a de facto playoff game for the birds (they finish with the Rams) and then have the now-with-something-to-play-for Giants do the same the following week. No tiebreakers. No bullshit. They lose two. We win two. That's it.

You cool? Good. Now forget it.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but this is still Packer Week. Remember them? The Green Bay Packers embarrassed the Chicago Bears in the not-so-distant past. Even the delusional Lovie Smith admits that. A team that lost its ninth game Sunday embarrassed us in a game we needed to win. If we don't make the postseason, you can look to Griese down the stretch or the 11 seconds in Atlanta. I won't. I'll choose a 37-3 debacle at Lambeau as the cause of death because that's the game we forgot to attend. The game where playing hard seemed optional.

Next Monday night - at home - we bury our most bitter of rivals. We carve the double digits on the "L" side of their season's tombstone. We kick their asses hard if we need the game and even harder if we don't - taking out a season highlighted by frustrating losses on them. Why? Because we're still wearing orange and navy and they're still wearing piss and puke. That's why. Because twice a year we care a little more about these games despite the playoff implications. They do not come to Soldier Field and win.

They do not. Come to Soldier Field. And win.

So root for the Browns tonight. Root for the Ravens Saturday night and the Falcons and Chargers and Redkins Sunday. I will too. But come Monday night those will still be the Bears. Those will still be the Packers. It will still be Soldier Field.

And that still means something.

Man, I hope the Bears are thinking as one-sided as you are Jeff. But as a fan, I gotta look at the rest of the schedule. I'm so frustrated and pissed. All I can think about is our first three losses and how we are three bad calls from 11-3. I have the feeling that you dont want this to get into a coach bashing thread, but if we don't make the playoffs I really don't think the Mccaskey family can ignore the huge uproar the fans and media will throw thier way.At least i hope. So we'll take a $3 million hit. Let me be the first to say "so what". I want to win now! We have way to much talent to not get the Big Win. I dont want to tell my kids that Urlacher and Briggs almost got one damnit! I'm sick of comparing our Bears to the '85 team. I'm sick of my father comparing Butkis and gale sayers to hester and Urlacher.
Sorry, but the last thing i want is to start thinking about next season and how Lovie will screw things up. Screw your plan. Screw your "best friend" coaches. Win the damn super bowl or get out of Chicago!

Matt Forte = 1115 rushing yards, 424 receiving yards (58 receptions), 11 total touch downs. Average rushing yards per game is 80 after fourteen games played

CB = 392 rushing yards, 78 receiving yards (15 receptions), 1 touchdown. Average rushing yards per game is 39 after 10 games played.

Really, how awesome is this! Is he serious???

1. Beat the packers and it's the first time the Bears will have one more than two games in a row since the 2006 playoffs (unless you include the end of the 2007 season and begining of this season, which I don't)

2. Going 10-6 to end the season bodes well going into the 2009 season whether we make it to the playoffs or not. A four game winning streak! Teams that finish like that usually do well going into the following season.

3. The turmoil in GB after a win that causes them to be 5-10 will create a major ripple effect in our favor that will roll into next season's games against them.

4. Steve Smith is frightening and anybody facing him in the playoffs will probably be crushed and embarrased. Our game against them would not have been so close had he been on the field that hot and muggy day.

5. Here's to Michael Turner, the Falcons need to have a running game against the Vikings and keep AP off the field, stop AP and you can win, start letting that play action pass kill you and you'll make pro-bowlers out of two X-Bears. Come on!

6. Finishing 10-6 and not making the playoffs will make Lovie and staff still think they are vindicated for all their lameness this season, not to mention the players themselves that have been on their high horse not taking things seriously when EVERY GAME COUNTS!

7. If we don't make the playoffs, I will feel extremely sad for all the hard work that several of our players who have layed out their hearts to be crushed when they deserve so much more. Starting with Forte Matte, St Clare, Alex Brown and WHAT THE "F" WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THEY WOULD HAVE CAUGHT ON TO THE FACT THAT DEVIN IS NOT IN THE SAME MIND WHEN RETURNING KICKS AND PUNTS AS HE WAS IN THE PAST, THIS WAS CLEAR TO US ON THE BLOG BY THE FOURTH GAME OF THE SEASON AND DANIEL MANNING COULD HAVE BEEN DOING THIS ALL ALONG...HELLO???

8. Wonder what our QB future is going to look like and where Rex will end up. Will we actually get a viable number two? Will Kyle stay healthy for a whole season, we lost a game or two because of his injury, but there are a lot more serious injuries to be had, we have a history of that here.

9. Lastly, how about a two headed running monster, with a viable back up running back because if Forte does ever go out, then what??? GET A RECEIVER ALREADY.

10. Will they ever realize that Rash can't take the pressure of being a vital go to guy. It just seems to me that Mike Hass could actually be a Wes Welker type guy, why do we see so many of these practice squad no name off the street guys play for other teams come out and make names for themselves? When will they start holding lack of performance accountable???

Today, I have to recall that watching the Vikings come out and play on a field by themselves scoring all those points brought back a recollection of a certain Jim McMahon coming into the game and scoring like two or three TD's against the Vikings. It was the Willie Gault freak show and propelled us into the Super Bowl. Seeing what they did today reminded me a lot of that and it's difficult to believe that they aren't getting better, but TJ needs to be reminded that he sucks and AP needs to be stopped and Bernard Berrian needs to sit out of the playoffs.

Jeff, I always love your outlook and analysis...but I'm pretty sure if the Bears don't make the playoffs, I will look back on the Atlanta and Tampa Bay games far more than I do the Packer game in Lambeau. Even had the Bears showed up for that game, we still started an injured QB who wasn't going to do anything for us that day from what I saw.

In the end, all we can really do is cheer our asses off for our boys these last two games. I agree with you big time there. The shoulda, woulda, coulda stuff also sucks to think about in the end, but I think every team that doesn't make the playoffs can point to one or two games as the reasons they didn't make it.

Let's go get the Pack come next Monday night! A rivalry always means something.

You should definitely have put a "mostly" in there somewhere. It's not as though the Lions are pointing at game 3 out of 14 losses as the turning point...

Mike...I think you know what I meant, but point taken. Usually, there is a big glob of teams right in the middle of the standings and then 4 or 5 terrible teams. The 'glob' teams are the ones who usually point to a game here or there. The bottom line is though, that if you have to point to a game here or there, usually your team just wasn't good enough.

I'll say one thing though...as hard as it has been to watch the Bears this season, can you imagine having to watch your favorite football team go 0-17? Anyone know who the Lions play the final two games?

The bears are outperforming all the analysts and most of the fans expectations right now. We started with an offensive line that no one had faith in, and a quarterback that basically no one had faith in. Both of which are performing adamantly. Great actually for Bear's standards. The fact that the Bears are in the hunt is all I can ask for as a fan. So many games have relevance for the Bears and that makes for a great fan experience.

It's horrible that the bears got duped into extending Urlacher's contract and granting Vasher one, but that's how it goes. Who would've expected Payne, Graham, and Forte to play so well?

To the fans who look back thinking all these scenarios would be a wash had they just finished off those three blown lead games to the NFC South, just be thankful that we won the goal line stand against Philly or the coin toss on Thursday, because those games would likely had ended up as losses.

While I agree this game is huge the true 1 game that would matter most if we miss is the 2nd Vikings game. We win that and our role and the queens are reversed, we would be in absolute control of our situation if we won that one game. So to me thats the one that matters.

We need to root for the Giants to lose against the Panthers. Bad news is that top seed in the NFC will be decided by that game. Good news is, if Giants lose that game, they will have lost 3 in a row going into the season-ender at Vikings. Really becomes a must-win type game, just for confidence purposes.

If we win out and miss the playoffs, that will suck but we'll have a fun and optimistic offseason. The bad news is that coaches will undoubtedly stay in place - the slim good news is that we'll have some basis to hope that maybe they really are learning from their mistakes and getting better.

The thing about the Green Bay debacle is that it is explainable. Two things happened in that game - Orton was rushed back from ankle sprain and was rendered ineffective because of the injury. And Babich actually tried to do some coaching by changing his game plan to favor the passing. He reverted to a more standard Tampa 2 coverage, which the old Bears used to run well, and thereby lost the advantage on the run AND on the pass - thus the debacle.

Give him credit - he saw that that deal wasn't going to work and changed it back to stopping the run for the following games.

For all this analysis to ring true, it needs to be accompanied by a win on Monday night. And judging from the now-reeling Packers, that's going to happen.

I predict Dave T will be taking our advice and we'll see someone other that DH returning punts. One thing I don't get is, what is the difference between kick returning and punt returning? When I read someone in one of the papers talking about replacing Hester, they talked about guys other than Manning to replace him. Is there any football reason Manning couldn't be great at punt returning too?

December 15, 2008

I have to agree with Urlacher FTW that if we miss the playoffs the game that mattered most was the Sunday night game @ Minnesota. In my opinion the Vikings are just an okay team. And we went up there an got detroyed for the second time in three weeks. The goal line stand, the 99 yard td, and the Awful Orton were all unacceptable in a playoff like game.
It's just hard to imagine the Bears winning their last two to have won 4 in a row, and then have them not make the playoffs....

Phil there are 2 major differences with PR vs KR.
1.) trajectory - Kickoffs are kind of a lazy end over end, sometimes on a hop, always fieldable type of kick, punts can have goofy spirals or sideways tumbles to them depending on how the punter drops it andwhere he kicks the ball.
2.) decisions - Kickoffs are a live ball, you always want to get to it and unless your 7-8 yards deep you usually just get upfield. Punts are totally different, you need to decide A. if you should field it or let it go hopefully into the endzone B. if you should try to field it and advance, or make a fair catch and C. punt blocking is much more hit and miss than kickoff blocking so you usually need to be a more elusive runner than a kickoff returner.

So yes there really is quite a bit of difference between the two so Manning may not be great at PRs, but that being said if we elevate Earl Bennett to dress, he could replace Davis in the slot and was also a punt returner in college; he also took a punt back for a touchdown for the Bears in preseason.

Thanks Ur!

Did anyone else think it was strange that Kevin Jones had to ask to be on special teams so he could play? That sounds like a backup quarterback asking if he might get a try and having the coach say, "Really? We didn't know you wanted to. Okay!"

I was a little bit bothered by this. I still am of the opinion that we find out about the abilities of our backups only when injuries force them on the field. I think this coaching regime continues to suffer from stubborness as it relates to players. And especially at positions like WR or RB, when you can try them out for a series or even a play, but we don't.

There's no good reason that Kevin Jones hasn't been active for games - but the reason the coaches give is because he doesn't play special teams, and AP does, so AP gets the carries as the substitute back. That's just stupid. Keven Jones showed some real spark early in the season, and has presumably healed up more since then.

Oh well - dem's our coaches.

December 15, 2008

#18 mikebdot said . . .

Phil: I would guess the reason they were hesitant with KJ is due to Wolfe's supposed success on special teams. I just don't see it, though. You can't have special teams as an excuse not to suit up your second best running back if KJ is indeed better than AP. I think we have a lot of talent at the position, I just think our O-line holds us back so much...which is why it is inexcusable to me that our first round pick hasn't played meaningful football yet. He's played in all of one series? What an awful failure of our coaches. Same with Bennett. Davis has underperformed as a slot receiver for weeks now. He can't catch anything. I almost wish he gets hurt next week just for the possibility of seeing Bennett against the Texans...

Weren't you just giving props to our coaches? Who are you, man?

I think we see so much Forte and not Jones because of the drop-off. AP got carries when 22 was out for a half.

yuck. or as the British say, fuckin' yuck. or, as the Romans said, uckinfay uckyay.

The wind is pretty much out of my sails as far as the playoffs are concerned. Like I said earlier, its hard to get over how we lost the TB and Atl. games.

There is some hope: we did this well with no WRs and a very average OL. On that side of the ball the needle is pointing up.

After I post this I'm going out front to do my Boldin dance and my Haynesworth dance. Will JA pull a Packman Jones this off-season and make it rain?

IMO the coaching is our problem. And the most recent example of that is the Saints game when Lovie tried to squeeze in a play from the 15 yard line when there were only 7 secs left in the game and we needed the FG to tie. If any one of a million things happen on that play, OUR SEASON IS FREAKIN OVER!! What if the Saints take 2 seconds longer to tackle Orton what would Lovie think then? What was Lovie thinking?

In the Atlanta game two weeks ago, what was he thinking when he squib kicked the kick-off with 11 secs left and a 2 point lead giving the Falcs the ball on the 40 yard line and only needing a long pass to set up a FG.

What was he thinking when he started Anderson over Brown for 16 games in 2007 despite Anderson doing absolutely nothing to justify his staying the starter!

What was he thinking when he said "Rex is our quarterback" after not one but TWO games with 0.0 passer rating in mid 2006! That's ZERO-POINT-ZERO Lovie!!! TWICE!!

I know Lovie must have some skills like teaching tackling, or managing difficult personalities, but thinking is not one of them.

December 15, 2008

#21 Phil from SATX said . . .

Mikeb, I praised the coaches for what I thought was a good game plan and good coaching during the game. No more than that. If I haven't yet made it clear, I hate our coaches (all except Dave) and desperately want them all gone at the end of this year. I'm pretty sure no one here has been more vocal in that sentiment than me. But that doesn't mean I can't give them props for being prepared for a must-win game and (imo) doing a better-than-normal job calling plays throughout that game. (Of course, I wish I hadn't gone so far as saying that RT "coached his ass off" - that goes a little far --but for HIM he did.)

Kevin Jones had runs of 12 yards, 15 yards and 16 yards in three games this year. I don't know why that doesn't qualify him as someone to use as a backup to Forte. No lost fumbles. So why not?

Answer: Who the F knows? It is possibly the most unanswerable question to the entire Lovie regime - why don't guys get chances to play when they're on the roster behind guys who aren't performing? There's like 70-80 offensive and defensive plays in a game - plenty of opportunities to try people without necessarily committing to them.

When the epitaph of the Lovie regime is written, this one will be one of the headliners, among others -

1) Couldn't call a game worth a shit on either side of the ball
2) Couldn't get the right players on the field
3) Couldn't coach up the players he had while they were here
4) Players-first and -last leadership style did not create a disciplined football team and did not inspire players to play their best and fostered an environment without accountability

But the epitaph is yet to be written, and right now we unfortunately have to count on these coaches to at least win next Monday night, and 6 days after that, and see what happens from there.

What needed to happen yesterday didnt happen, we needed the Vikings, Falcons, and Cowboys all to lose, but they didnt, end of story.

I have never given up hope of my Chicago Bears making the playoffs, even if their chances were remote, but I'm giving up now. After watching the Cards get blown out at home by a Minnisota team without their starting quarterback, I dont think that the Vikings will lose out. Especially since the Giants will have no reason to play their starters (since NY and Carolina are tied, and the winner of that game clinches home field advantage).

However, I still will be cheering for the Bears to finish at 10-6 and beating the cheese.

Heres to a season that left us wondering "what if".

Phil, it's an interesting situation. Is the problem we have on this team a question of lack of talent at key positions or a lack of the coaching staff being able to develope the talent?
I go back and forth on it myself. I mean we see a lot of our former recievers having success on other teams. Maybe not pro bowl type success, but still preforming much better then they did here.
And why did it take an injury to freaking Terrible Terry Metcalf for Beekman to finally get a look at gaurd. I don't know that Beekman is a great player, but he's 10 times better then Metcalf!!
How does this related to the Earl Bennett situation who can't get playing time from Davis. Davis may be a quality guy and a great story but he clearly isn't a starting reciever in the nfl? Not close.
And lastly yes, AP is charlie hustle kind of guy that everyone can love. But Kevin Jones is legit NFL running back who has put up a couple of 1000 yard seasons and would be a great #2 of a 1-2 punch. But yet he never sees the field.
I've talked myself into blaming the coaching staff.

December 15, 2008

#24 Phil from SATX said . . .

Willie, I'll say it again - we need to root for the Giants to lose, because if they do, they'll have lost three in a row. After losing three in a row, do you rest your starters in the last game, ensuring yet another loss, or do you fight like hell to win that last game to give yourself at least SOMETHING positive to go into the playoffs with?

It HAS to be the latter - if the Giants lose out, they will take the field in their playoff game haven't experienced winning for what? six weeks? No way. They'll have to do everything possible to win that last game.

I actually think the same thing goes even if the Giants win next week - I think either way we'll get a full strength attempt by the Giants to beat the Vikings. So the big non-Bear game becomes ATL vs. MIN.

(and by the way, thanks for getting it right on THE WORD).

I would love to have Boldin, Im not sure if he would like the climate change but outside of that I think he'd be a great fit here. Haynesworth... I dunno, is he really good? Yes. Is he worth the amazing salary he is sure to bring.. I doubt it. How many times did you hear his name in the Bears game? Our average pasted together O-line handled him, so he isn't remarkable, I mean after 06 who wouldn't have paid huge money for Tommie, everyone was singing his praises as the second coming, now hes.. average. Consistent DTs are just too injury prone imho to spend a fortune on.

I think we need to see what we have in Bennett, then in the offseason sign Boldin, and go get a tackle, a stud ballhawking FS, and additional options for development at QB and WR. I'd like to see Brown freed up as a nickel type DB where he is more free to blitz or cover, with Payne at SS and a true FS. Then in a dime you could bring Manning in and have a pretty good umbrella.
Also another good aquisition that should be pretty cheap is a true blocking FB, that or have AP gain 20 lbs and develop him onto one. I mean a true bring the pain, pickup 1 yard everytime, block like a freight train (see Mike Alstott) type of FB.
The Oline I really think were close, as long as Williams is the real deal, sliding St. Clair to a guard, Beekman to center, and on the Right side signing a stud tackle and bringing up Buenning for Garza; if we get a comparable sized RT to Tait that gives us 5" and 35 lbs gained on the Oline; doesn't sound like a lot but trust me it is.
I really don't think were far off from a pretty good run here, I'm not as irked at Turner as most on here, I actually think he has some pretty good schemes, he is just too stubborn about removing plays that simply don't work. Lovie.. ya know he's Lovie. I think he gives benefit of the doubt to players too long, see Rex, Cedric, now Rashied Davis. What someone meant to college football doesn't usually transfer to the NFL. With the exception of Adrian Peterson (the purle one) and Peyton, most of your top guys were nowhere near the first round. Look at Micheal Turner, Tom Brady, Tony Romo, the list goes on. We need a coach like Belichick who can evaluate talent early on and admit when he's made a mistake on a guy. Someone who can look through the roster at someone like Earl Bennett and say Davis if you drop one more f'n ball Im givin this hungry kid right here his shot.
The worst imho by far is Babich, no pedigree for this, no pedigree for the Bears, nuthin; and he sucks at it. Okay take back the thing I said about moving Brown to nickel MAnning is fine there, fire Babich and move Mike Brown to DC and then bring in a true FS. Okay Im done for a while.

Al, same goes for John St. Clair - he was on the bench while Fred Miller was out there practically single-handedly DOOMING our season last year. We can see from this year that St. Clair and Beekman are way better than the two guys we had starting for us last year AND the first replacement off the bench in Metcalf.

Same goes with WR, same probably goes with backup RB, same goes on D with mistakes made with who's playing on the line, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

Yeah, it's the coaches. I think we know that.

It's early to begin the offseason talk, but so what?

Ur, it's been said on here by those who know Olines more than I that your guards can't be too tall, and St. Clair is too tall.

I think we're still in a position where the draft has to be offensive. It's been neglected too long, or addressed and then have the players thrown away like some moron would throw away a nice late model car because the tires were low so it rides shitty.

Three priorities in the offseason, and to me all equal -

Creating a run blocking line
Wide receiver
Running back to complement Forte

We get those three things and we become a dominant, ToP plus scoring offense. And that alone fixes the D with the parts we already have.

We need to retire Kreutz, slide Beekman to center and sign or draft a stud guard. St. Clair and Williams become the tackles, Garza stays because he is adequate.

One more later round RB, and the best wide receiver we can buy/draft. Bennett works in as 3rd WR, if he can unseat Lloyd (who I really want to keep). Get rid of Davis and Booker.

If you did just that, it'd be enough to vie for a crown next year. Don't forget that this new D line was effective at getting to Brees when he was like the least sacked guy - at least I think. There's enough existing talent on D to make it, and Vasher isn't washed up or a bust - he needs healing. Good guys in the wings, waiting.

Boldin would be the perfect addition, with the weapons we have to compliment him as a true #1 WR. We have the back, TEs, and specialty WRs to compliment it all, and a decent QB. We would still have Hester to stretch the field on the other side...
Probably a pipe dream.

The draft is key, and I hate that we wait 4 months for it. I give up wishing for a specific guy, a. we never get him and b. we are usually wrong about the guy (mendenhall) or the guy we did pick (forte).

Wish list: Ball hawk FS sounds sweet. Future middle LB. More O-line help. Big Back, FB and RB, to block /spell Matte.

What am I missing? WR of course. On puropose. We can't draft WRs apparently, so we just need to buy one.

Good News: Pat Williams has busted his shoulder and won't play the rest of '08. That's a boost.

Ok, Dont talk to me about offseason moves. . . This is Packer week.

This is the week that old school bloggers lived for. Midway turned in some of the funniest work ever written on this blog during Packers weeks. Pissed Off had epic rants that I would have to reread about four times before i actually understood him. PIB would be an idiot, but he would bring it. WCPF would stand toe-to-toe and argue like a gentleman with us.

This is a HUGE game. Not only is it a must win for us in terms of playoffs. But as Jeff said, we got destroyed. . . annihilated by the septic sludge from Wisconsin. We need this game to redeem ourselves.

The first thing Lovie said when he made goals for this team after being hired was to beat the packers... Well, he already fucked that up once so he better bring it this week.

And to top it all off, this is MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.

This is a nationally televised game. Every football fan in the U.S. will be watching the greatest historical rivalry in the NFL.

This is at Soldier Field. This is God's country. This is the home of Payton, Da Coach, McMahon, Hampton, Dent, Singletary, and to arguable the greatest team ever, the 1985 Chicago Bears.

It doesnt matter what our record is or what their record is. This is a big game twice every year and we are already down 0-1.

This is Packer week and this is a home game. The fans better show up in force on Monday and we yall better bring your A game. Offseason talk can start once the Bears season is over. But that time has not come. Not yet.

Bear the fuck down

In a sane world, JA would look at his track record for first round picks and happily send it packing for Boldin.

for a little inspiration for JA to make it rain:

I traveled from NY to Chicago in to the Bears/Bills game with some Bills fan friends of mine. This resulted in me seeing some fantastic Dick Jauron related fan signs. My two favorites were "Buffalo loves Dick" and "We're better off Dickless". Anyway, after decimating the hapless Bills 40-7, The mass of fans chanted "Green Bay sucks" as we filed out of the stadium. My Bills friends were mystified. They didn't understand why we would chant that after beating Buffalo.

That my friends is why this week is so important. Last year this game meant nothing playoff wise for us, and yet it was the most exciting week and game of the season for me. If you can't get up for a Green Bay game, you need help. This is the week we really miss Midway. Bear Down. GREEN BAY SUCKS!

The Green Bay Sucks chant is a favorite when exiting out the tunnel just outside of Soldier Field after practically any Bears game. I happily participated after the Saints game last week...gotta love that.

Minnesota needs to lose 2. Bears need to win 2. Not bloody likely, folks. The Pack notwithstanding, do we think these Bears can go into Houston the final Sunday and beat a team playing as well as anyone in the NFL at this time? Andre Johnson is a beast and Houston has other viable weapons at all the offensive slots. The Atlanta and Tampa games come home to roost. This season could see the first 11-5 team that doesn't make the playoffs. Let's all thank the piss-poor West divisions of the NFC & AFC for THAT ugly possibility. Even if the BEars manage to go 10-6, I don't see that as a harbinger of good things for next season. The window of opportunity is closing for this defense. Brown & Uhrlacher are senior citizens, Harris cannot seem to get/stay healthy, likewise Nathan Vasher. As for the McCaskeys not being able to "ignore the huge uproar..." ? Oh yes they can. They have had decades of practice.
