Well we are still in the fight for the playoffs the last game of the season. Come on Bears and some good fortune from the Giants or the Eagles and Raiders. If you have a lucky anything get that shit out today.

As always.

Bear Down!!

Well, it certainly is going to be an interesting Sunday. I couldn't ask for anything more.
Steltz, make us proud - an interception would be nice; not letting Owen Daniels go off for 60 yds and a TD would be equally OK.

Anthony Adams - break Slaton in half. That's all I ask.

Peanut - nothing stupid; you are the frigging man in the secondary with Mike B out. Do not let A Johnson past you.

Urlacher - this is it, 54; picture your baby drama mama's face on Steve Slaton's body....ok, that would probably just make you giggle now after the Flatley court case.

Lance - just keep doing what you do. You are the straw that stirs this cocktail.

Bear the Frigging Heck down!!!!!

I just spent the last two hours of my life arguing with a friend of mine, a Vikes fan, about our validity, Our justification for being where we are...
Enough said dipshit! My biggest fault was arguing with this prick, my friend. You win... you win... you lose... You lose. Vikes fans trying to justify how they have to still fight to win this division is arrogant and at this point irrelevant. Goodnight my Nordic friends, go fuck yourselves you self-righteous pricks! See you next year.

Bear Down, everyone. If nothing else, it's been a fun ride this season.

@jeff: Gary Oldman is a badass. I take it as a good omen about today's games. ;)

Sorry I missed the Christmas post - I posted a bunch of heartfelt shit and it never took. Actually that's two in a row for me that didn't take, and probably led to me taking a break these last few days while at home on vacation.

So a belated Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah to all, and especially to you Jeff - thanks for creating something that, like everyone else here, immediately became the first thing I logged into just about every single day since I found you in 2006. You're not just my favorite Bears writer - you're my favorite journalist/writer period. Wish we could figure out how to find your plays, although there's probably copywrite issues there.

Looking forward to a momentous day, with three possible outcomes -

1) Bears lose, out of the playoffs.
2) Bears win, but miss the playoffs.
3) Bears win, and make the play0ffs.

Odds are obviously against us, primarily due to the unknown of the Giants. I tend to agree with whoever posted on the last thread about it coming down to fast starts - more for the Giants than for us. Sucks about Mike Brown, but 15 games out of him was about 12-13 more than I thought we'd get - and while he wasn't the game changer he was in the past this year, there's no way our secondary can play as smart without him - but maybe youth and speed will make up for it.

I am mostly struck by the fact that this may be the last game of the season today - I can't believe the season may be within six hours of being over. Needless to say, I really want a win to close out this season. Whether we get into the playoffs depends on circumstances now outside of our control, but today

I WANT A WIN.

Texans are a tough team with great skill players - but we have faced, and beaten, the same this year. I really want to see Kyle rebound from a somewhat inexplicable bad game last week - one that I am still willing to blame on weather and lingering injury. But today should be a day when ideal conditions help us too. Hester will have footing today, unlike the last few weeks. Matt Forte should just a shade quicker on his cuts, and I see him having a big day today (while agreeing with Jeff on throwing early, because we WILL see 8 men in a box at the beginning of this game). The D line has been surging these last few weeks, and it all comes down to today, so I expect to see Matt Schaub on his ass at least a few times.

Screw the Giants/Queens - we can't watch the game, and they are irrelevant to us today. At least until after the clock reads 0:00. Today,

JUST WIN.

JUST WIN.

BEAR DOWN AND TAKE THE WIN....

BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't always been a football fan, but in the last several years, I've come to love this game and this team, even though they sometimes (ie: last week @ Orton's performance) make me want to throw furniture at my TV. I know it's cheesy, but I'm hoping every member of the team AND the coaching staff in particular has seen Pacino's speech in 'Any Given Sunday' and will take the sentiment to heart. It IS a game of inches. We just need to make sure we get a few more than they do. Doesn't have to be a spectacular record-breaking game. It just has to be a win. It will be a win.

Bear Down.

#12 DTB said . . .

Giants: K Lawrence Tynes, RB Brandon Jacobs, CB Aaron Ross, LB Gerns Wilkinson, DT Leger Douzable, WR Derek Hagan, TE Kevin Boss and NT Barry Cofield.

Analysis: Boss was doubtful and Jacobs was questionable, so this shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Derrick Ward is a tough start against the motivated Vikings defense. Coach Tom Coughlin does want to get some backups, such as David Carr, into the mix. So proceed with caution.

Vikings: John David Booty (third quarterback), TE Garrett Mills, LB Dontarrious Thomas, T Marcus Johnson, DE Otis Grigsby, WR Darius Reynaud, NT Pat Williams and DT Letroy Guion.

Analysis: Berrian was questionable coming into the game, but this is a huge game for the Vikings so this isn’t much of a surprise seeing that this game is huge for the Vikings.

DP....The passes to Olsen and Hester worked too well so Turner is trying to find more stuff that doesn't. Like slow developing plays and running into the line on 3rd and 1.

It may not be over but I have VERY little hope. Houston has fire in their eyes. Bears don't.

next will be the same unless the bears get some real offense and revamp the defense. Starting with getting rid of urlacher as the leader of this defense... No emotion, No heart and horrible MLB in the cover 2 defense. He cant defend the middle of the field on the pass.... As long as they play cover two they could replace him with a strong safety type guy who can make a big hit and COVER the middle of the field...

they live on that show blitz and retreat the linebackers to cover the middle of the field.... How many Sacks does Urlacher or briggs have? The reason for the blitz is to get to the QB... You shpould progress during the season, the bears never do....

Only players on D earning their money is Alex Brown, Lance Briggs, Danielle Manning. Whats with the huge smile on Ortons face because he fell forward for 6 inches but his team is down 14?? Hes all pro throwin 5 yard passes. We need receivers, a new mlb, maybe Urlacher can play the other outside spot but he cant play the middle any more. We need an outside pass rusher to help the other linemen, Alex Brown cant do it all. Its a damn shame these guys have no emotion and drive, its all about their money.....and nothin else. Get rid of that fuckin Orton, Ill take Rex's int's, at least we got to the super bowl, and the D sucked in that game, made their backs look like hall of fame material. On to the draft.....start appraising the talent so we can help Angleo make the right picks !!! Wait till next year, the fav words of all Chicago fans!!!

I hope we're not TOO critical of the Bears today. Two years ago we went to the Superbowl. We are 11-7 in our last eighteen after shaking off the Super Bowl hangover. We could have easily had three more wins this year over teams like Carolina, Tampa and Atlanta. We have the second best record in the NFC over the last three years, trailing only the Giants. We looked better on offense than we have in many years. We have the offseason to fix a fixable defense. At this time last year, all the experts were writing us off but we battled in playoff contention for 17 weeks. We add Matt Forte, who will just get better and better. I think the future looks good if we can fix a few things and get the D turned around. I agree we might need a new coordinator.

Get ready for another lackluster year, which will start with the Draft, where the Bears will trade down their first round pick for a first and a second, their second for a second and a third, their third for a third and a fourth, and so on and so fourth.

"Ron Turner and his worthless play calling"
"Lovie Smith's game clock managment"
"Brian Urlacher" He has become a different kind of anchor. Does someone have a boat ??
"Kyle Orton" Does he not know how to thow a touch pass ????

God help us next year !!!!
We'll be knocked out of the play offs in week 3. Unless of course we go to the NHL playoff format. Then we will only have to win 2 games.

Total Yds - Bears 294.....Houston 455!!!!!
Sacks Bears - Zero.....Houston 2

Forte was hurting - we need him for the future so I'm OK with bench

Orton is hurting too. Throwing as best he can...just isn't there.

Andre Johnson is a Beast. Wow do I wish we had a guy like that.

Just a few other thoughts.... game changing play - I'm sure many would pick the Manning fumble but mine would be the 3rd and 1 early in the game leading 10 - 0 Turner runs it into the same place in the line that ahsn't worked all year.

And the usual clock management near the first half..

Hey John-
Happy New Year & Congratulations.
Keep in mind the Giants mailed that one in, and you better pray like a nun for the 3rd seed, b/c if not, you'll be raped for sixty minutes by some birds from the ATL.

To the rest of us,

Now begins the 8 hellish months until Sep. '09.
At least we had a winning season.
Lovie's not a bad coach. (5 seasons, 3 winning).
But he needs better coordinators.
We shouldn't call for his head, not yet at least. He's earned another season.
What we really need is better O and D coordinators.
The D is getting old.
The O-line is getting older.
The wideouts such you know what.
The quarterback can't get better if his targets are busy sucking you know what.
The halfback is very, very, very, very, extremely, tremendously, uniquely, great.
The fullback(s) suck too.
You'll see me through the offseason, but for now, I'm rooting for the Falcons w/ my buddies.
Hope you all have some good friends. This one is gonna be long, and boring.
At least we have each other.
That includes you John.

is there anything possitive that can actually be said about this game.

A trifecta of a 3 phased failure, 4 phases if you want to add coaching to that mix and I do.

Matt Forte 13 carries and 3 receptions??????????

This game was lost in the first quarter when having to settle for a field goal

of course completely in the 2nd and 3rd quarters (we had the ball 6:55 total, 1 TD, they had the ball over 23 minutes and got three TDs and a field goal) when Houston did the same ol same ol to our secondary and our supposed 4th ranked run defense (give me a break, thats been an overated stat when its mattered all season, who cares if you are the fourth ranked run defense if you can never and I mean never stop the pass when it matters)

Then our defense gives us a half a chance in the fourth and the offense with Adrian Peterson?) fails again.

Heres something positive, I still felt better about this season than last season.

I dont have a lot of hope for the future, we are old and not good. There will be no coaching changes, no changes in philosophy in draft picks, no quarterback again.

Another positive, the packers suck too, but there upside seems better.

Now what, I mean really what? It's going to take awhile to get over this one with any upside with still no signal caller and our lame ass coaches. i just dont think that providing weapons to orton is the answer, he has no accuracy,?only in the middle like our boy roy said all pre season.

Whatever to this season, thank you Matt Forte for providng some hope for our season and as a fan i apologise that our coaches failed to put you in the game plan for more than half the game.

Down Bear.

3 Draft DE first round, OG second round, FS third and whoever for the rest.
4 FIRE BABITCH

I don't expect to see Grossman, Kevin Jones, Marty Booker or Mike Brown back next season.

I agree that forte should of had more carries in the secong half. Peterson didnt do so bad though. The reason I think the playcalling goes conservative is to limit the QB/offense from making mistakes and allowing the defense to hold a lead... But this defense is not capable at the mopment... BEars have never been a hammer the throttle while in the lead team... If the offense gets us a lead, we lay back and hope the defense can hold it.... As far as O playing safe to limit mistakes - the offense has played much better when they open it up - particularly some no huddle in the mix. They have had a number of solid drives similar to the opening drive today. Remember the 92 yd drive against Atlanta which left the coaching staff 11 seconds to find a way to lose? They managed to find one.

I would fire Lovie and most of his 'buddies' staff.
Dave Toub (Special Teams) is the only guy I would keep.

I would like to see Orton with a better offensive line and a reliable wideout or too. Sorry, DP, but with better wideouts
Orton grades out a LOT higher.

No awards for this officiating crew, either.
What does it take for Greg Olson to get a P.I. call? TWICE Houston DBs are hanging on him in the endzone and not looking back for the ball and no call.
That TD to Johnson at the end of the half should have been reviewed. He bobbled the ball then re-grasped it as his left foot came down on the end line.
and Slaton fumbled that2nd time. It was called a fumble and NONE of the replays could show that the ball was not already loose when his elbow it. Another call overturned WITHOUT conclusive evidence to do so. Throw in that absolute HEINOUS spot to set up 4th and inches. The NFL SOOO needs full-time officials and to get the on-field crew OUT of the replay process. It slows the process mightily and it is ridiculous to force the Referee to have to overturn himself or one of his pals on his crew. Replay is good. The NFL's implementation of it is seriously flawed.

All that not withstanding, in the end the Bears are who I thought they were.

Is it just me or does Lovie constantly find ways to avoid claiming the defense sucks. He's always first to critique the O (which put up 24 points) and in doing so protect his D and BFF Babich. Looking at his post-game comments you'd think tge offense lost this game, not the leagues 3rd worst defense. Somebody's gotta ask Lovie some serious questions in those media rooms. He gets off waaay too easy after games. Just once I'd like to see someone ask him to explain a drop from #1 defense in the league to 29th. Let's see him glass half-full his way out of that one. You'd think it was the sixth game of the season the way he spoke in the post-game. Now that his team would be in the playoff right now if his precious overpaid D didn;t let the Texans put up 31.

December 29, 2008

#207 The Duke said . . .

This just about sums up everything I'm thinking right now:

From the Trib's Rosenblog:

The Bears' offense got a quick 10-0 lead, then choked.
The Bears' defense got a 10-0 lead, then choked.
No killer instinct. No urgency. No nothing.
How much smaller could the Bears have come up in the biggest game of the year?

This was a playoff game, right? Or a one-game season, or a one-series season, or whatever cockamamie mind game that coach Lovie Smith plays.

Now it's next season.

Game 16 looked like so many other games. Looked like this season. Too much bad play at the absolute worst time.

Kyle Orton's final numbers were decent, but bad receivers make for a bad passing game, and a lack of Matt Forte contributed to 2-10 on third down. At one point, the Bears punted on six of seven possessions. They lost time of possession almost 2-1.

But if you're going to point fingers -- and everybody is -- you can point to the overpaid, underacheiving defense and you can point to a coaching staff that apparently gave Danieal Manning too much to do.

Manning was moved to safety after Mike Brown's injury because he had been playing so well at another position. That's the Bears' coaching for you. And Manning was beaten by Matt Schaub the way he was torched by Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl the last time this was such a good idea.

Houston's all-everything wideout Andre Johnson was standing behind Manning and everybody. He was wide open the way Bears receivers almost never are. Johnson was ordering room service, lighting up a cigar -- I mean, he even had time to wait for his number to be called at the Illinois Secretary of State's office -- and then dragged Manning and Charles Tillman into the end zone for additional embarrassment.

But Manning wasn't done making himself look overwhelmed and making Bears coaches look bad. He promptly fumbled the ensuing kickoff, a turnover that became a 14-10 Texans lead.

Remember how bad Devin Hester looked when the Bears coaches gave him a lot more to think about? Welcome back.

That was just the start of the indictment of the defense. In the last 40 minutes of the game, the defense gave up four touchdowns and a field goal. Five scores on seven drives. Three of those drives covered at least 72 yards.

The Bears forced one punt in that time. One.

They got no sacks. None.

Schaub finished 27-36 for 328 yards and two touchdowns. How much more damning evidence do you need?

This damning: In the biggest series of the season, with the Bears were down by a touchdown with 9:35 to go, the defense -- the players with all the money and the defensive coordinator gerrymandered by the head coach -- allowed a non-playoff team go 89 yards and eat up more than six minutes.

Nobody came up big. Nobody played hero. The Bears forced the Texans into one third down and the Texans didn't convert it -- until Nick Roach was called for defensive holding, that is, giving the Texans an automatic first down in the red zone, the kind of bonehead penalty that has marked this team.

By the time Steve Slaton blasted into the end zone with the decisive touchdown, you couldn't find a Bear in any position to tackle, if, you know, this team actually emphasized tackling, another shortcoming that marked this unit.

Bad coverages, sorry gap control, dumb penalties, wide-open opposing receivers, a blown double-digit lead -- this game, this season.

If you thought it couldn't get worse, there's Smith saying that "when you're 9-7, you're close. You don't need an overhaul."

You miss the playoffs in one of the worst divisions, and you don't need an overhaul? Excuse me?

Tell you what, the first part of the overhaul is with people who say things like that. Reality check, hel-lo. Teach fundamentals, not mind games.

The next part of the overhaul is the defensive coordinator. This team is built around the defense. The defense failed. Time and again. Same mistakes. Connect the dots, Lovie.

Next are the wide receivers, then depth at running back, then a championship quarterback, then a secondary.

Oh, and a general manager who can figure out who can actually coach and who can actually play.

December 29, 2008

#208 DP...Tom said . . .

The play calling is ridiculous, BUT I think the QB has the call on the field. Orton does not have the ability to audible out. That is what makes some of the greats(manning) GREAT. Football IQ, Arm strength or mobility. Also having ROUTE running receivers helps too. KO has none of these.

D. Manning IS a good player, and should play. Just not at free safety. He need to be the nickel guy, where he can blitz.

Assuming Mike Brown is done as a Bear, we need to replace him. When he is out, the defense gets worse than it really is.

Also, I agree with the statement above that Orton made some good throws. That's my main problem. I don't know if we should blame it all on Turner or both.

BTW, McNabb is a free agent or no? I can't see to find any clarification on the web.

December 29, 2008

#215 Nick said . . .

McNabb is going to be in Philly. Let's not get our hopes up. I think KO, against many people beliefs, is our quarterback. He is the best quarterback we have had in almost 17 years.

As many of you that have read my posts before I usually defend the coaching staff of the Bears. This week I have to sadly say we were let down by coaching. Babich lost us this game. Turner didn't do much better, but our defense that was once dominate has become mediocre at best. I really think Lovie Smith's coaching style works well as a head coach. I think he needs to get his coordinators to be more of the "Ditka" type, high intensity and rough around the edges. Rivera struck me as that type. Babich is too passive.

Another thing about Orton, how many of his picks came after the ball was tipped by our own receivers? Receiver is the number one issue right now. Hester has done a good job considering he never in his life has played receiver. The Bears need to make a push for getting Boldin or TJ "Whos-yo-momma." Then draft a high receiver. If we could get a good receiving core then we could judge Orton's ability, but until we get those receivers judgement needs to be put on hold.

Why was Forte used so sparingly...AGAIN!?
