This is from today's Sun-Times. Brad Biggs.
Mark Slough knew he would have interest in Frank Omiyale but he didn't expect his phone to go off like it did when free agency began late Thursday night.
The Bears landed the versatile offensive lineman after 10 teams expressed varying degrees of interest in signing the 26-year-old, including the Carolina Panthers, who he spent the last two seasons with.
"Chicago is very fortunate,'' said Slough, Omiyale's agent. ``There were other teams that were extra high on him. This is really an incredible story.''
Omiyale's story began in Week 5 when he filled in for Jordan Gross at left tackle. The Pro Bowl performer was out with a concussion. Omiyale helped open up some big running lanes in a 34-0 shutout of the Kansas City Chiefs. Then, when Carolina played the New York Giants in a high-profile Week 16 meeting, Omiyale played the entire second half at left tackle as Panthers lost Gross and right tackle Jeff Otah. Again, he played well. But other than preseason action, the fifth-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2005 didn't have any action for teams to judge.
``He looked like an NFL left tackle should look,'' Slough said. ``That is what set him on this path. A lot of people are going to say free agency and Frank Omiyale is one of the first persons to sign? The level of interest in him though is indicative of what kind of players teams believe he will be. The level of interest speaks volumes. People knew.''
Omiyale's deal is worth between $11.5 million and $14 million, and Slough said the maximum value is easily attainable with play-time incentives. He's a big-legged guy who is strong and has good reach.
Omiyale can also play guard but right now he likely projects as the right tackle, at least until the Bears better define their line in the draft. This casts into doubt whether or not the club will work to re-sign veteran John St. Clair. He is seeking a starting opportunity and it's clear the Bears' first target was Omiyale as there was no movement toward a deal with St. Clair.
Omiyale is on his way to town to complete a physical.
Stay tuned as the first day of free agency continues.

#3 MattIsMyForte said . . .LOVE this pick up. Hopefully Buenning turns into Garza's replacement, and Williams pans out. I'm thinking Beekman is the center of the future. Actually beginning to like this line for next year, especially with Omiyale's run-blocking. Now we just need to sign Housh and Vilma, and draft a quality safety and a pass-rusher, and I'll take back everything I ever said about Angelo.

#4 WTF are they thinking said . . .Everything...?
February 27, 2009
#5 do said . . .So does that mean they are going to move him into RT or just back up both tackles?
I just hope they don't stop here. Whether it's FA or the draft I want them to use a high pick 1st or 2nd round on the OL.
With the pile of guards they have it doesn't look like they have room for more OL unless they cut/trade away someone. Which is something they should consider thinking about as bad as some of the play was.

#6 zisk said . . .With Andre Smith's disappearing act at the combine a lot of new mock drafts have him falling past us in the draft. Would you guys want to take a chance on him if he falls to number 18? Knowing that the guy left the combine because he was out of shape but like 2 weeks ago a lot of people thought he might go number 1 overall?

#8 Urlacher FTW said . . .The good thing about this signing is more depth on the O-line. The bad is Jerry Angelo is going to think the O-line is solidified and not draft an O-lineman high in the draft. I would take that lazy fatass Andre Smith in a second at #18. He's a high first round pick caliber talent coming in at 18 but I don't see that happening no matter what the experts say. I would still not want the Bears to pick a receiver at 18 unless Maclin or Heyward Bay fall that far. The rest of the receivers will likely fall to the second round anyways. I still go OT in first, reciever in second unless a freak happens to fall in the first.
February 27, 2009
#9 JAB said . . .Okay so my understanding is that right now, before the draft, our O-line goes:
Williams-Beekman-Kreutz-Garza-Omiyale
Hmm, we need Unger or the Duke; sans Garza I would be more comfortable. I think one side of the line needs to completely change so that in short yardage we can have confidence in saying just get in behind Omiyale and Loadholt or Unger and Omiyale and theyll get you 2 yards. We need road graders and Williams and Beekman are more finesse type blockers. We need a mean and angry side of the line.
Oh JA even if I buy the whole Steltz can work out at FS stuff and the whole coaching alone should revamp our D-line stuff, I don't think anyone believes that Hester is a No. 1 WR. If your that confident in Rideau and Bennett just say it, don't crap us by claiming Hester is our No. 1 guy and we are just looking for a No.2; cuz then we are in some trouble. Go get us a No. 1, Hester can be a great No. 2.

#10 BearsTransplant said . . .So what's the deal with Dan Buenning. We never hear anything about him starting at the guard position or anything. I he even on the radar for people to take Garza's spot. Why would the Bears trade for someone who is obsolete and can't help the team?
February 27, 2009
#11 Z said . . .Ok, not everything. The Bazuin/Okwo draft picks, and the Vasher deal are inexcusable... And JAB, I guess the deal with Buenning is he still isn't 100% from his ACL surgery. This would be his 2nd year after said surgery, and he should be ready to go. From what I understand, he's a much more aggressive run-blocker than Garza; Garza has been serviceable, but I think he'll probably win the job in camp.
BEARS!
February 27, 2009
#12 Pd said . . .If Buenning can take Gazra's spot and is a good runblocker and if Omiyale is the real deal and if Beekman is our Center of the future and if Williams is worth his draft spot. That is a lot of if's but that would put us 1 pick away from a real young and promising line. Hope, hope.
10 teams were interested in Omiyale huh? They must see something that they like. This could be real good. Do it again JA.

#13 Maybe said . . .Nate washington is in Detroit. The lions suck, but adding Nate washington and rex grossman is a huge upgrade for the passing game.
Why aren't we looking at Washington. Hes no true #1 but hes soild and would be a nice addition to a otherwise weak WR corps.
Aren't we $30 million under the cap? the signing of a backup OL isn't gonna be enough Jerry. You need to land either another OL or a WR...

Good job JA - keep it up! Let's have some more please! Two new tackles over last year! And nobody needs to infer that Williams is anything like a bust yet - he'll have next year to start and prove he was worthy of that high pick. Sounds like we have tackle solved, next on to guard/center! Maybe Buenning will be a candidate. Still would love to see a big guard signing or drafting.

The Broncos inked their sixth player of the day, Miami safety Renaldo Hill. He will fill one of the safety spots while Denver hopes to finalize the Brian Dawkins' deal, which could happen tonight. The Bills finally announced their first signing Friday night, adding former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to their roster as the primary backup for Trent Edwards.

Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News is reporting the Jets have completed a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard for a fifth-round draft choice this year and a conditional choice in 2010.
But that's not all. The Jets also are close to signing former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Cory Ivy and on Saturday will host another of head coach Rex Ryan's favorite pupils, Jim Leonhard.
The Jets already have two sensational defensive backs in Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Kerry Rhodes.

Arrington (Arizona).
Brian Dawkins could be next. The seven-time Pro Bowl safety is visiting with Broncos officials after failing to reach a new contract with Philadelphia.
The Broncos also signed Houston wide receiver Charlie Anderson to an offer sheet as a restricted free agent, the Denver Post reported. The Texans will receive Denver's 2009 seventh-round draft pick if opting not to match the contract.

Don't get me wrong I love the signing no matter what because it sounds also like he may end up being better than Chris Williams anyways and he has extremely long arms like 36" compared to Williams 32.6". Just don't want us to get to excited that we found the RT for the year. I may be wrong but I want someone that we can get a consistant push behind and not sure he's it. I bet this ends up being the most interesting draft ever for Da Bears. My prediction is that their will be multiple players that nobody expected to be there drops to our pick and then what. Ex. who do you take Jeremy Maclin, Mark Sanchez, Andre Smith, Heyward-Bey just a thought and I think it's possible.

The Denver Broncos continued adding to their roster at a torrid pace on Saturday, making three key additions on defense. The team announced it had signed seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, who spent his previous 13 years with the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to a source, the deal is for five years and $17 million. The deal could escalate to as much as $27 million if Dawkins can reach some achievable performance levels

#39 O-line said . . .The Bryant Johnson experiment in San Francisco unofficially ended when the 49ers showed little concern in letting the receiver hit free agency after one injury-affected season with the team. The official end came Saturday when Johnson agreed to terms on a three-year, $9 million deal with the Lions.
Johnson wound up getting a raise from the $2 million salary he earned from the 49ers last season. the 49ers' acquisition of Brandon Jones from the Titans fills Johnson's roster spot, but San Francisco is not finished making over the position. Isaac Bruce's decision on retirement could also affect the 49ers' plans.

#40 Growing Frustrated said . . .Just when it looked like right tackle Jon Stinchcomb was about to leave the Saints, he's back with New Orleans.
The free agent decided to re-sign with the Saints on Saturday. Stinchcomb had some interest from other teams, particularly Seattle. But the move allows the Saints to keep their offensive line, which helped quarterback Drew Brees throw for over 5,000 yards last season, intact.
Stinchcomb's return also means the Saints have good depth at tackle with Jamaal Brown the starter on the left side and Zach Strief as the top backup. The Saints had scheduled a Sunday visit with offensive tackle Khalif Barnes, but he probably isn't a priority now that Stinchcomb is back.

The Cowboys acquired QB Jon Kitna from the Lions in exchange for starting CB Anthony Henry on Saturday.
With Dallas having released veteran backup Brad Johnson, Kitna will back up Tony Romo at quarterback. Meanwhile, Henry’s departure will open up a spot in the secondary, which one of two second-year players, Mike Jenkins or Orlando Scandrick, is likely to fill.
Considering that Henry had been considered for a move to safety, this trade may indicate that the Cowboys will keep S Roy Williams after all.
Henry, who has started 51 NFL games, is the second cornerback the Lions have acquired since the start of free agency as they attempt to fortify the position. Earlier Saturday the team signed former Titans CB Eric King.

The New England Patriots on Friday signed running back Fred Taylor and tight end Chris Baker.
Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard signed a contract agreement with the Giants.
Free-agent offensive lineman Geoff Hangartner has signed with the Buffalo Bills, becoming the first addition to their rebuilding line.
Maurice Morris signed a three-year deal with the Detroit Lions on Friday, for a reported $7 million and cornerback Eric King signed a two-year contractJim Kleinsasser, mentally prepared to leave but wanting to stay with the Vikings, got his wish at the end, agreeing to a three-year, $9 million contract.
The Niners reacquired fullback Moran Norris Friday
Safety Jamaal Fudge agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Falcons.
With no deal in Arizona, Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner is planning to visit other teams, multiple sources told ESPN. His first stop will be San Francisco. Warner, according to a source, has been recruited by at least two teams including the 49ers.A snag in his contract with Denver could return RB J.J. Arrington to the unrestricted market. There is enough concern for the Broncos to bring in free-agent RB Derrick Ward for a visit today. Doesn't sound like the Bears are going to be a player for a receiver, not now any way. They've shown no interest in Mike Furrey either, and the ex-Detroit Lion might land in a high-powered offense on the East Coast. The opportunity is going to be there for Earl Bennett, the third-round pick from last year. He's going to need to deliver quickly as he won't get the Mark Bradley Nine Lives treatment.
John St. Clair isn't the only Bears player to reach the open market that the team wants back. Add running back Kevin Jones to that list. The Bears have made him a contract offer but there is considerable interest in him right now. Jones told the Sun-Times that most of the teams in need of a back, including Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, the New York Jets and Tampa Bay have expressed interest in him. Absolutely brilliant.
#49 - As for trading Cutler for our # 18. If I were to do that deal it would be on draft day. I think there are a few guys that I would rather draft then have Cutler. If the guy who I want is not there at 18, then a trade would be in order.
Do I think Cutler is the answer at QB? He would greatly improve the position, can play in bad weather, and has the desire to win. I'm interested in why Denver has made this gaffe. Is it a new administration making a rookie mistake, or a deliberate strategy?

#61 QB said . . .One of the Green Bay Packers’ big offseason priorities was re-signing DT Colin Cole. But early Sunday morning, Cole wound up signing a five-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, following the same path that former Packers coach Mike Holmgren once did.
Now, Green Bay has stepped up its efforts to sign Dallas Cowboys free agent DE Chris Canty, who is scheduled to visit Seattle on Sunday and Monday. Once again, the Seahawks and Packers are engaged in a battle for a defensive lineman.

With Tampa needing to use up some of its salary-cap space, the Buccaneers and Michael Clayton reached agreement on a five-year, $24 million deal that includes $10.5 million worth of guaranteed money.
Incentives and bonuses can push it to $26 million, but the larger point is that Tampa retained Clayton and wide receiver Antonio Bryant when many wondered if either would return.

#64 O-Line wins games said . . .Circumstances surrounding the Matt Cassel trade keep getting curiouser and curiouser. The more we learn, the more inexplicable it gets.
The New England Patriots sent Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 34th overall selection in this year's draft, compensation that seemed a little weak on the surface.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen has since reported there was a much better offer on the table, that the Patriots passed on the 12th overall pick in a three-way trade that would've sent Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Broncos were willing to offer their own first-round pick (12th overall) to the Patriots for Cassel. Obviously, it was conditional upon Cutler being traded and Tampa Bay was the most likely destination, the Bucs willing to part with their first- and third-round picks.

March 2, 2009
#74 Mix and match said . . .Chris Canty has signed a six-year, $42 million deal with the Giants, a contract that includes $17.25 million guaranteed in the first two years.
Canty was prepared to leave the Giants complex and fly to Green Bay for a free-agent visit Sunday night -- if New York didn't hit the $7 million per year average that he was seeking. According to a league source I talked with, the Packers weren't scared off at all by the $7 million average salary and would have likely topped New York's offer. But Green Bay, which is switching to the 3-4 defense this year, wanted Canty to come to town and meet the coaching staff before negotiations began in earnest.
The Packers viewed Canty as the best 3-4 end available in free agency, but they traditionally move slow in free agency and weren't prepared to compete with the Giants' offer in negotiations over the phone.

#78 Broncos sign 326 FA's in 48 hours said . . .The Bucs are now officially in the running for free-agent running back Derrick Ward. He reportedly will make a visit to Tampa on Tuesday. It's believed the Bucs have had an interest in Ward all along, but were a little concerned about his initial asking price. But Ward, who is concluding a visit to Denver on Sunday, may not be getting the kind of initial offers he was hoping for.
Free agent receiver Nate Washington, the former Pittsburgh Steeler is in Nashville today and having discussions with the Tennessee Titans.
The Denver Broncos have released long snapper Mike Leach.
Laveranues Coles will not reunite with old friend Chad Pennington in South Florida. The Miami Dolphins have no interest in Coles and told the receiver's agent as much. We know Coles visited the Buffalo Bills on Friday. Beyond that, it unknown what other visits he has lined up.Coles would be a fine addition as a No. 2 possession receiver. He has caught more than 80 passes four times and gained more than 1,000 yards three times. He had 70 catches for 850 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns last season.
Houshmandzadeh is going to spend the night in the Twin Cities and consider contract offers from the Vikings, Bengals and Seahawks. Presumably there will be an announcement [Monday]."
The 49ers are expected to meet Monday with Redskins free-agent defensive end Demetric Evans.
It is suspected that the Rams are shopping receiver Torry Holt and offensive tackle Orlando Pace, possibly for modest compensation.

#82 Gin said . . .Jay Cutler, instantly accepted as the answer.. wow. The media plays such a big role in what people think. Look at Jay's year in 07 (1st full season with time to develop) compared to Kyle's 08 (same). The numbers are very similar.
A. ) Cutler is in a much different Offense, well over 600 pass attempts to KOs 400 some.
B. ) Cutler has a much better line (he was sacked 11 times in over 600 attempts, Kyle 30 in 400) and better WRs.
C. ) If you divide TDs and INTs by attempts, Cutler throws a TD 4% and a pick 2.9% per attempt and KO throws a TD 3.8% and a pick 2.5% and KO actually had more rushing TDs than Jay; pretty even KO probably plays closer to the chest. So to me it is pretty much a wash to compare these two players, yet one OMG let's do whatever it takes he could be the one, and the other eh he's okay but he definately isn't the answer.

#84 Not gonna happen said . . .Urlacher FTW you must also remember that Cutler had a low number of sacks also due to the fact that he does have some ability to move in the pocket. I don't think there is any chance Cutler is moved unless he really pushes his luck. Where else can he go and throw to weapons like he has in Denver?
March 2, 2009
#85 Urlacher FTW said . . .The only reason this was even a possibilty was because Denver was going to get a starting QB in return for Cutler that they thought would excel in their offense and NE was willing to get a pick instead of a player for Cassel. Denver will never trade Cutler for just a pick or a non-starting caliber QB and other players in return for him. So while we have no chance at him, be grateful that Minn, Det and Tampa are in the same situation and he won't be competing against us in the NFC.
And Cutler has a better, stronger arm and is more accurate and mobile than Orton. Better line and WR's, sure, but a horrid Defense and 7 RB's on IR last season.
Come on people, focus. We need O-line, WR, S then #2 RB, D-Line and LB.

#86 Options? said . . .Idonijie, possibly but it could also have to do with the types of D's they faced, not playing Philly alone would have taken like 6 sacks and 2 picks off KO. I'm not trying to argue for anyone here I'm just saying I don't know that we would be in any better a situation with Cutler, for the talent he has around him, I don't think he is all that great and he is a crybaby like Delhomme.
There is another good guy to look at, who wouldn't have traded some draft picks for Jake 2 years ago but how about now, I don't think the Lions would start him after his season last year.
Look the point is, the mess that this team is in I don't think Id look to trade for Tom Brady or Peyton Manning even if I could, the Bears need all the draft picks they can get -and Cutler is no Brady. If letting St. Clair, Lloyd and KJ walk will get us another compensatory pick or two, let em walk. This team has huge issues to fill; WR, OL, OL, FS, DE, FB, NT change of pace RB for Forte; I mean look how far you have to go before you get to QB as a definite need. While KO may not be a great every week starter for Fantasy FB, he is growing to be reliable when healthy; and if he can get the timing down on his deep ball, he has it all. We simply have too many things to worry about to even look at available QBs, the management has realized that; why can't the fans.

Are you really serious?
You want Jay Cutler?
You want to throw Kyle Orton away?
Wow.
Seriously. Wow. We finally get a guy who is palatable and you are so stuck on stupid because of a 60 year-long quarterback carousel? Goodness gracious.
I entered this offseason with high hopes and ambitions. When Coach Smith began to give the impression that he planned to take the bull by the horns and really shape this organization up...I felt that he meant it. Clearly, he has not changed. I hate to agree with John (whom I imagined congealed from a large amount of fecal fungus in a sweaty fat man's gooch (which is that area between your ballsack and asshole)) but he's right. The Bears made no splash in the free agency market. No moves, except signing Omiyale, which is probably a good decision.
This is not different from any other year, but Lovie and Jerry needed to change the way they do business. They have not. Laverneus Coles is on the market...he sure as shit would make a splash and would be OUTRAGEOUSLY more useful to the Bears than Jay Cutler.
Cutler? Are you kidding me? Cutler? Don't talk about Cutler? Cutler? Cutler? You kidding me? Cutler?

#90 Not too late to jump in here Chicago. Somebody get some smelling salts for JA. said . . .The Bucs are one of about a half dozen teams to express an interest in talking to and possibly signing Bears free agent running back Kevin Jones.
Jones, 26, was a four-year starter for the Detroit Lions before joining the Bears in 2008. He played sparingly in Chicago last year, running 34 times for 102 yards, but still lists returning to the Windy City as his top priority.
Jones has not set up any visits yet, but the Jets, Bengals, Browns and Bills are all expressing interest. In another development, the Tennessee Titans are the first team to emerge with an interest in Bucs free agent defensive tackle Jovan Haye. Haye is exepcted to visit the Titans later this week.

#91 The Ghost of Halas said . . .At the very least, free agent receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh appears to be torn about his 2009 team.
Houshmandzadeh left Minneapolis late Sunday night and returned to his home in Los Angeles without an agreement in place. That development doesn't mean he won't ultimately sign with the Vikings, but he also wasn't ready to commit immediately, either. Cincinnati and Seattle are believed to be his other two suitors.
The Bengals reportedly have the best financial offer on the table, and both they and the Seahawks might have a more favorable situation at quarterback -- always a primary concern for free agent receivers.
He figures to get a deal from someone worth around $6 million per season.

#96 1 boater rescued, 2 NFL players and 1 other still missing said . . .While the 49ers are preparing to visit with Kurt Warner, the Cardinals will be meeting with free agents Bryant McFadden, LaMont Jordan and fullback John Kuhn.
The Jets seem to have the inside track on safety Jim Leonhard and might have cornerback Corey Ivy in their back pocket.
The Patriots lingering need is cornerback. Same as Miami. The top candidates are Leigh Bodden, Shawn Springs, Chris McAlister, Bryant McFadden and Jabari Greer.
The Bills have hosted several players that remain unsigned. Receivers Laveranues Coles and Kelley Washington, Guard Kendall Simmons, linebacker Jamie Winborn and cornerback Drayton Florence.
Offensive tackle Khalif Barnes would be a nice addition to a lot of teams. In terms of age and production, 26 year old Barnes is arguably the best tackle remaining on the market.
Eight-year cornerback Hank Poteat could be an ideal fit for a team looking to shore up their secondary.A veteran receiver like Hilliard wouldn't cost a lot.
If we aren't going to even look at FA WR'S or S, then what is wrong with incentive-laden deals for no drops Brandon Lloyd and heart of the defense and great veteran mentor and still pretty good to good Mike Brown. Are we even going to fill all of our roster spots?
Maybe add a younger linebacker like Angelo Crowell.
Signing Ray Willis might help solve a problem at right tackle. Willis could come cheaper than once anticipated. He's a big, young, physical right tackle with a mean streak and relatively low miles.JA don't you even want to talk to Devery Henderson and Nate Washington?
Depth in the backfield? Tennessee free agent return man and cornerback Chris Carr.March 2, 2009

According to a source, Taylor, who still could have made $8.5 million next season, was asked by the Redskins to take part in 75 percent of their offseason workouts. That would have required him to be at the Redskins' facility during eight of the 13 weeks of the offseason program, three days a week.
Family took precedence over the money.
Taylor came to the Redskins from the Miami Dolphins for a second-round choice in 2009 and a sixth-rounder in 2010.
The 34-year-old Taylor has 120.5 career sacks.
Despite his departure from the Dolphins, Taylor is still interested in continuing his NFL career.

The Denver Broncos have signed linebacker Andra Davis Monday as they continue to revamp their defense. He fits in with the Broncos' plans to convert to a 3-4 defense since he played in a similar scheme with Cleveland. Davis spent seven seasons with the Browns, finishing second on the team in tackles in 2008.
The New England Patriots have reached a one-year deal to re-sign OL Russ Hochstein.
The versatile offensive lineman has played right tackle, center and guard in his seven seasons with the team.
Houston Texans strong safety C.C. Brown will take a free-agent visit tomorrow with the New York Giants. Brown, 26, has started 44 games in his first four NFL seasons with the Texans. While run support is considered his forte, Brown had eight passes defensed and an interception during the 2007 campaign. #111 The Ghost of Halas said . . .Urlacher FTW where do you find the stats for dropped passes? I've been wondering where to find that for a while.
I agree that QB is not the top priority. Do I think Cutler is a improvement over Orton absolutely, but I also think Orton really can be our long term answer. He really was playing solid for a lot of the season. If he can get the touch/ timing down on his deep ball he will be fine to very good. I also think KO is a fighter and leader that you can't teach which is very underrated in a QB's importrance. I agree that we need to move on to more pressing needs than worrying about getting Jay.
Top needs S, RT, WR. I also think we need to get a better blocking FB, i like McKie but need a better blocker, need better guard than Garza, Beekman needs to play one more year at guard than take over for Kruetz, Need a veteran back up QB, I think Adrian Peterson is fine for a back up RB (very underated), but I would like to draft a big bruiser that can catch. Need a young DE for the future in case Mark Anderson doesn't make it back. Also not sold on Nick Roach at LB yet. He may be alright my jury is still out on him personally think Jamar Williams is better and Hunter is the best of the three but we need better play from that position.
Damn that's alot to do to fill in one draft with no help from Free Agency. The worst part of all of this is knowing how great a City Chicago is with such loyal fans and it's a rich City that should have no problem competing for FA's. maybe some day they will be sold to someone that will spend some money.

I'll start this next bit while saying I am absolutely pumped about the prospects of Orton the next few years, and see absolutely no chance that Jay Cutler ends up in Chicago...Urlacher FTW you are absolutely crazy if you think they are pretty comparable. From TD/INT ratio, yards per attempt, completion %, mobility, etc. the stats favor Cutler.
Now please bears lets add one more O lineman before the draft.

#117 Urlacher FTW = Kyle's cousin said . . .Are you starting to get the idea that our front office, contrary to some of our previously held opinions, are actually complete dumbasses who are totally out of their league when competing with other teams' "professional" front offices?
Exhibit A: For the last three years, JA has officially declared Chicago a NO-FLY zone - NO ONE is allowed to visit. A couple of years ago, when I was feeling more charitable and optimistic, I would muse that perhaps JA was doing all his work on the phone, playing possum, while others did the show and tell. Well for the third season in a row, it's now official - the possum is actually dead, not playing at all, just rotting.
Exhibit B: Jerry is suffering from the delusion that he actually played the FA market last year with his last minute, last ditch pickups of Brandon Lloyd and Marty Booker. Now this has an interesting twist, which is
Exhibit C: They accidentally got lucky with one of their "non-move" moves and hit something with Brandon Lloyd. The twist? (and reason for Exhibit C) - THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW IT!!! Brandon Lloyd is just another WR bust to them. IDIOTS.
Exhibit D: Kevin Jones may actually stay in Chicago? Because now that all the clubs have expressed interest in him, which has re-interested the Bears like an ex-girlfriend that you couldn't wait to dump suddenly intrigues you when your friends want to ask her out? So now they might work on another deal for Kevin Jones? AFTER THEY DIDN'T USE HIM AT ALL FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON?
The verdict?
M O R O N S
Case dismissed.

It's not that the Bears are stupid when it comes to free agency....and I know some people treat this as someone telling them their kid sucks at baseball.....but we just don't have money to throw at players. We only draft players cause we have to....and we only re-sign starr players because fans would get pissed if we didn't keep them....and whenever we do resign players....or our nfc champ coach...it has to get public and ugly.
We just don't seem to have money like other teams.

#120 Idonije said . . .Jones should resign with chicago, Last year i liked when he came in to give forte a break I thought he ran pretty well. Now i know the bears like to reward players who play special teams but jones was a semi special case. The guy had his acl reconstructed, that is no easy come back. Typically from what i've read it takes at least a full year after the reconstruction to get back into the swing. look at McNabb his 07 season was not good but in 08 he was a top 10 QB. That is not saying KJ is a top 10 but then why in the hell did we sign him, just so some other team could reap the reward. Plus the up side is we could still get him for cheap, which the bears like. I know last year we had a big question at RB and we signed KJ just in case. Luckily for us Forte turned out to be better than expected, but i just hope we don't burn him out.
There are a few positions that still need to be addressed. WR, we should keep Lloyd even though he is injured by a stiff breeze, the guy can make some pretty good catches plus he doesn't drop the ball. However, if the bears could get coles that would be a great pick up. After all he is a much better WR than davis will ever be.
Just as a final though I personally think the bears would in a much better position to draft if they could find just one more FA. At least this way they could focus just a little bit more on their needs.

And remember people, Phil is one of the most optimistic, glass half full bloggers on here so once your on his last nerve, you are f'ing up big time.
The wait until teams are cutting players so you can sign them for some coupons and a hot meal only works if you need to add a little depth, not find starters and fill positions of serious need.
If we are done with FA, I want to hear one intelligent reason for us not to sign Mike Brown, Kevin Kones and Brandon Lloyd on the cheap. I am just grateful that we hopefully have enough back up linemen now that we can let Fred Miller ride off into the sunset. But seriously we need more O-line. Two more.

I'm not saying pull a Dan Snyder and sign everyone under the sun and pay them unreasonable sums of money, but dammit sign someone that isn't on the verge of retirement or some other teams garbage that no one wants anymore.
You do build a team through the draft I agree but that's for the future not for the present. If were close to being there I don't see it. I can't sit here and say the Bears are going to be OK anymore, because they're not if they don't go out and try to get some help at WR and S at least. No one can convince me that drafting a WR or safety is going to help for this year, both positions take time to develop.
Cheap and frugal is the only words I can use to describe what is going on right now. I'm embarrassed to call myself a Bears fan right now and that is huge for me to admit because I've never felt this betrayed by an organization and I've been a lifelong Cubs fan.

And yes nfl.com stats are way off, I mean if the guy I think is really great has crappy stats it must be off because I have a Rothlesberger jersey in my closet. Using numbers and facts to prove a point scares people.
Aikman never threw more TDs in a sinlge season than Rex Grossman and only threw for over 19 TDs one time in his entire career. Only thing Aikman ever had was accuracy. As far as levels of QBs Marino, Brady, and Peyton are far and away in their own class. None of the others you mention even belong in the same sentence, not Aikman and certainly not Cutler.
But let's compare 08 in itself.
Big Ben threw less TDs and more picks than KO period, that has nothing to do with opinion, it is simple math, obtained from the Murph questioned nfl.com.
So in 08 KO was better than Roth period. In 08 Cutler's offense allowed him to attempt 616 passes where KOs allowed 465.
A difference of 151. So if you add in 151 pass attempts with the same yards per attempt, TDs per attempt and INTs per attempt they would line up as so:JC 62.3% 4526 25 18
KO 58.5% 3938 24 16This is with KO playing half the season on a busted ankle and hav

So yes they are actually very comparable and as far as less mobile, KO had more rushing TDs than JC in half as many attempts ( I know that isn't the greatest stat for tracking mobility but still.)So no, I'm not related to Orton, I'd like to see us end up with Bradford or a real franchise QB as well, but I am not willing to even hope to trade away the farm to get 500 yards and one more touchdown out of my QB. Cutler is not that great, one Pro-bowl does not make a superstar. Sorry if I hurt your man-crush with my scary math.

#138 Urlacher FTW said . . .Please Urlacher FTW you didn't just use TD's / Attempt to compare quarterback mobility...Also 2/3's of Cutler's interceptions were thrown when trailing like he often was because of the Broncos awful defense, and had to take risks.
Sounds like Coles is heading to a visit in Cincy today.
Doesn't it seem like a lot of teams will be looking at WR's early in this years draft? Jets, Bengals, Oakland, Jacksonville, Giants, and likely even Philly. At least we are not the only team that sruggles to find good WR's...
March 3, 2009
#139 Urlacher FTW = Kyle's cousin said . . .Idonijie I did say it wasn't a great stat to use but other than opinion based press, what trackable stat is there to show a QBs mobility? Lack of sacks? There are some pretty mobile QBs who get sacked a lot. The fact is most "mobile" QBs end up with a few TDs every year; Moon, Vick, Young, so it's not like it's as crazy as you make it out to be. Not as much that one more TD makes him more mobile but wouldn't a truly mobile QB, as you claim Cutler to be, have more than 3 TDs in 3 seasons?
This site does some pretty in depth analysis of QBs in itself too. I don't know how definitive the numbers are but it is kind of neat to look at the way it breaks down incompletions among the QBs and drops of WRs, kinda fun site.
Cutler in Minnesota would be scary but reallistically the only player they have to offer in trade would be Peterson so unless Denver is stupid, they'd be getting Cutler but losing AP. Not nearly as scary.

#140 Urlacher FTW said . . ."KO had more rushing TDs than JC in half as many attempts ( I know that isn't the greatest stat for tracking mobility but still.)"
How is that scary? You manipulate the truth with manipulated stats.
Cutler had more rushing attempts because he is actually mobile, knows how to scramble, and can actually run for yards if no one is open. Orton has more TDs in less attempts cause he squeezes in from the 1 yard line and never runs in hardly any other situation.
I can't believe you have the audacity to mention the word man-crush, you are in love with Orton.
He is all you talk about on here and you defend him with bullshit stats giving him 151 more passes with 1000 more yards and he still falls short of Cutler.
Orton will never make a Pro Bowl in his life, he is a backup QB, period. A younger Brian Griese without the famous daddy."So in 08 KO was better than Roth period." --Again...what??
I know one shiny thing Ben got in the 08 season and that Kyle will never get in his life.
Ben - 2
Kyle - never
But I guess in your world Super Bowls don't matter and only created stats count.

Yes case closed your an idiot and afraid of even posting your normal alias,
GG son :)
NextAnd my argument originally wasn't even for Orton, more against Cutler. If there was any manipulation it is you being upset about me trashing your man-crush. Yes, if it was a real QB with some years left on the tires sure, Brees, Rivers; or if a great player wanted to get us few couple years while we develop Bradford or the like, Warner, sure but to bring in a gun slinger who really hasn't proven much except that he is mouthy and risky. Look if they voted at the end of the year instead of the middle Cutler wouldn't have gone to the Pro-Bowl, his numbers in 08 were pretty crap. Yah 4500 yds how, how many points did that put on the board? TDs vs INTs, thats the game and throwing 3 picks for every 4 TDs is not impressive to me sorry.
So please try to respond in the future with better arguments than WHAT??

#147 Urlacher FTW said . . .In summation my posts about Orton and Cutler were :
1. "C. ) If you divide TDs and INTs by attempts, Cutler throws a TD 4% and a pick 2.9% per attempt and KO throws a TD 3.8% and a pick 2.5% and KO actually had more rushing TDs than Jay; pretty even KO probably plays closer to the chest.
So to me it is pretty much a wash to compare these two players, yet one OMG let's do whatever it takes he could be the one, and the other eh he's okay but he definately isn't the answer."
2. "So no, I'm not related to Orton, I'd like to see us end up with Bradford or a real franchise QB as well, but I am not willing to even hope to trade away the farm to get 500 yards and one more touchdown out of my QB.
