#5 Urlacher FTW said . . .Please for the love of god stop comparing Orton and Cutler. First of all it doesn't matter because it's never going to happen, secondly it's apples to oranges. Different offenses and Denver's ability to get receivers in drafts and be able to develop them to turn into something worthwhile. I personally want to see another year of Orton just to see what he can do, but without a good receiver I'm afraid it's going to be another year of mediocre to bad offense. Go ahead and blame Orton, but watch him leave here and go somewhere with receivers and a decent O-coordinator and succeed.

#6 jeff said . . .Is he actually even out for open trades? My understanding was that the reason the deal was offered was because of Denver's new coach being from NE and likeing Cassell and really thinking he fit the O well. So they were only willing to trade him if they got a QB with a solid skill set and NFL experience plus a draft pick in return.
Denver has already signed nearly enough free agents to fill a roster, what could they possibly hope to gain by trading Cutler unless they trade up at the position? Is there definate deals out there or is all this just hearsay after the Detroit - Denver - NE deal fell through. And Jeff I was just getting ready to complain at you for making about as many clean blog entries as JA does FA signings.

How much longer will Bear's fans fall victim to "see some more of 'em" syndrome. Getting starts can help a player with good potential develope into a great player... but it can't make bad turn to good.
We wanted to see more from Grossman, Benson, and a score of other inconsistent JA picks. But no matter how hard we watched them, it didn't make any of them good at football. Nor did it make Jerry good at doing his job... or our ownership good at doing anything other than being a sad shell of a good organization's past.
This team was started by hard workers and innovative thinkers... its legacy was continued by great players who played the game with intensity... not its run by clowns who feed fans rhetoric and false hope.
JA is bad at his job. McKasky's won't spend money to make the team good... and we're all in for another year of "(INSERT FAILURE's NAME HERE) is our quarterback..." from Coach Smith.
How much longer till we (like Blackhawk and Lions' fans) are forced to anticipate the death of an owner to move the team forward?

#9 WTF are they thinking said . . .BEARFANMIKE, I do think you make some valid points but I do think Orton has a good skill set. He makes good decisions, makes all the short to mid-range throws and looks like a leader when enters the huddle. It is so hard to judge him w/o a consistent receiver in the group. I mean come on Brandon Lloyd as a #1 last year or even Devin Hester. It's really not fair to put the blame on Orton and say he's a shitty quarterback. I want to see him with the opportunity to succeed not be set up to fail as Jerry Angelo seems to want to do at this time. Even Orton haters have to admit this receiving corp is pitiful at best.

Oh yeah, because when AZ played a tough team like USC, that guy got squashed. But he played so well against Stanford. The fans and the tradition John, much better here as you tend to prove and the fact that they couldn't sell out a stadium for their first playoff game in 3 years.

Also, is next year Cutlers final year in his current contract?
Anyway, I'm not a big fan of JA but we're acting like Cutler was ours for the taking and we held our nose. I don't think that's the case. I could be wrong.

We went into last season, without a definite starter at QB, an unproven RB from Tulane, what looked like one of the worst O-lines in the conference. Our Receiving core consisted of 1 unproven WR that wasn't ready to be a #1, 1 arena football player who looked promising at best, 1 cast-off who couldn't stay healthy and a dinosaur.
Depending on what plays out in FA and the dreaded JA draft, we should still be better off, or at least more stable than we were going into last season.

I'm agreeing with Urlacher. Enough with the Cutler, he's not for sale, just a rookie GM making a huge tactical error, proving that he's a rookie at his job. Orton has NOT proven he's not the guy, he frankly overachieved last year given our horrible WRs and generally poor playcalling.
There seems to be a boatload of receivers for sale. I'll say it again, Jerry certainly appears to be sitting on the sidelines when we have more WR needs than any team in the NFL. And I can't get his comment out of my head, because it seems like it was purposeful in preparing us for him doing nothing in FA. We went into last year without a true #1 receiver, and we still don't have one while how many are getting signed? I respected and even applauded the decision not to overpay Berrian, he hadn't proven he was worth anywhere near the money he was to be paid. But there have been others already signed that HAVE proven it.
It's early yet. But this early FA is playing out a lot like last year, with nothing to report in the newspaper after the big opening day signing.
I like another line of Benjamin's which is commonly attributed to him:
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
small print - the quote was actually about wine, not beer, but the sentiment was the same
Time for some beer! We'll need it and more before this free agency period is over!

#27 CA BEAR FAN said . . .I do actually believe that many, but not all (FIRE BABICH) of the necessary changes were made to the coaching staff. We have solid players on the defensive side of the ball that had a down year, no doubt. Was it because of coaching? Lack of confidence in the coaching/scheme? Or Lack of Talent? I say a mixture of the first two. The talent is there.I am super stoked to have 0-Rod as our line coach. I still think Babich is a bumpkin, but I also felt less than confident about our 5 ft asian LB coach. Maybe its just me but, where in the flying fuck did HE play LB? However, I digress, hopefully Hoke brings something to the table and the defense can help right this ship. Wholes in our offense which were usually covered by W's generated by our defenses of the past were forced into the spotlight last year when the D continuted to buckle late in games and come up short. The offensive woes are another monster...Turner and his staff remained intact for the most part. I feel confident that his predictable reign has this year to turn the corner and its back to throwin signals for his bro in SD. Who also better get his head out if he wants to keep his ass under a headset.

The only way the Broncos will trade Cutler for our # 18 is if Sanchez or Stafford is available at their slot #12 on draft day, and Cutler remains disgruntled.

You guys act like the kid is Tom Brady or some shit. Who knows how that guy is even going to be after his injuries. I'm not huge into stats but I'm pretty sure I read something that talked about like a 500yd difference between him an KO. And he was throwing to that MArshall guy who was a beast compared to any of the guys on our WR core. I'd much rather see what we can get in the draft to address one of out many other needs instead of trading picks for a guy who is like KO without the neckbeard.
It's like you guys are so bent on wanting Angelo to make a splash in FA that you start to make up rediculously far fetched scenarios on how or more importantly WHY these guys would want to come here.
I'm glad we let Berrian go, cuz it was him or Briggs. I'm glad Housh didn't come here because he isn't going to do shit once he is annointed as the #1. Anyone remember Moose? Haynesworth isn't worth that kind of money (No one is) and won't make it through the whole season. Cassel was INDEED a product of the system and most definitely will blow in KC. I like the idea of Coles in Navy Blue & orange, but he's old as fuck too. The future IS in the draft. Unfortunately it is in Angelo's hands. He can't fuck it up again this year, can he? Yes he can, and there's a damn good chance he will. However, there is nothing you can do about it but wait and hope for the best. I am actually happy to see them taking this approach rather than see us throw a shit ton of money at some 30+ player who is past his prime, hoping for a quick fix. The peices are falling into place and the picture is A LOT clearer than it was last year. Bears For Life!

#45 Bears Fan in Colorado said . . .Broncos say Cutler's not available
March 3, 2009 9:49 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Pat YasinskasIt's possible the Tampa Bay Buccaneers missed out on their one -- and, perhaps, only -- chance at Denver quarterback Jay Cutler.
The Broncos have come out and issued a public statement in which they say they will not trade Cutler.
Although strange things can happen in the NFL, you have to take the statement at face value. It's strong and appears very definitive. It still remains to be seen if Cutler and the Broncos can put aside any hurt feelings that came after reports that the Bucs tried to trade for the quarterback in a three-team deal that would have sent New England's Matt Cassel to Denver. It didn't happen as Cassel was traded to Kansas City.
But it sure looks like the Broncos don't have any plans to let Cutler go. The Bucs are going to have to turn their focus elsewhere as they look for another quarterback to compete with Luke McCown for the starting job.
Hey, Chris Simms is available.

He's strong and accurate and wherever this crap has come out about him being a bad leader, it's wrong. He WAS the Broncos last year. Yes, we all get that Culter to the bears will never happen. But it's so tempting to dream. The bottom line is the Bears deserve a franchise qb sometime. Somebody explain to me how the # 18 pick in the draft, plus whatever else has to be thrown in, is NOT worth a game-changing QB?

Jay Cutler -4526 yards, 200 rushing yards
Kyle Orton - 2972 yards, 49 rushing yards
March 4, 2009
#49 Rancid said . . .So his 4700 yards there? How many points did that put on the board? Oh yah none. Again passing yards dont mean much, you can pass all over the field and get your but kicked if you can't run the ball. New Orleans last game of the year is a perfect example, Brees threw for almost 400 yards and they got beat; it's an empty stat.
But you are still missing the point, Cutler led a team with a bad defense (29th), 2 good WRs, a pretty decent O-line, and a pass based Offense to an 8-8 record.
So how is he going to come to a team with a bad defense (21st ), no good WRs, a worse O-line, and a run based Offense and do anything but worse than 8-8?
Your logic is that he'll do more with less talent around him at nearly every position and with less opportunity to succeed? That's amazing logic.
The QB running toward the wrong goalline, throwing back across his body to Dez Clark who is standing behind Olin Kreutz will look just as bad coming out of Cutler's hand as it did out of KOs.
Even if we had a great QB with tons of promise, he would have noone to throw to, noone to protect him, and noone to design or call in great plays. How are we better?
This is what I'm not understanding? Why shouldn't we fix the problems that are awful first and work our way up. You bet your ass if we had a Fitzgerald type guy and a moderate D and good Oline, I would be banging the drum for a great QB also, the fact is we have a great RB and a promising TE, that's it end of story, we have a ton of work to do on positions where we are much worse off than we are at QB.

Did you know GSH was the MVP of the Rose Bowl?
Did you know he was also a professional baseball player, and baited the infamous Ty Cobb when he played against him (GSH was absolutely fearless). He got ready to fight Ty after the game, and Ty just walked up to him and said something like, "you got moxie kid, I like that. Just tone it down a bit." They became good friends.
Did you know GHS came up with the name, National Football League? OUR GUY NAMED THE NFL.
He went with Red Grange to see the president at the time, Calvin Coolidge. When introduced to the president as being with the Bears, Mr. Coolidge said, "that's great, young men, I love animal acts."
I throw out some more as I keep reading.

I would rather have Jermaine Phillips than Jones but that would be a great way to start for us. That is exactly what the bears HAVE to do just one of these season and soon is sign about (4) solid not the best not scraps at positions of needs and then we can select best posible players again instead of need. I'm afraid if we don't do it soon the guys we do have will be old or gone.

#64 Phil from SATX said . . .#57 was me and so have been most of the anonymous and smart ass heading updates about player movement. I figured it would get old if we weren't signing people but I want us all to realize how inactive we really are so if we suck that these guys don't get another free pass. If we don't make the playoffs, I want Lovie and Babich gone and if the Offense, especially in-game adjustments to what is not working, doesn't improve then I want RT gone too. If we suck at S and WR all year because JA didn't get it done then him too. He can stay on as a after 4th Rd Def draft advisor. Certainly I don't advocate what Snyder or Denver are doing but there has to be talent worth throwing in a visit here and there or an offer to shore up a need. Don't worry because we have Craig Steltz and we like the WR's. F U!!We are not stupid JA and that is not how you compete for a Championship and if you can't get us there then we need someone that can. We are missing out on reasonably priced players that might really help. I just don't get it.

No skipping to the end, I'm enjoying every single page, frequently laughing out loud. I'm telling you folks, you need to read this if you haven't. After I finish this I'm going to "I am Third."
Halas mentions the quote that someone (Ditka claims it was him) said about him, as "He throws around dollars like they were manhole covers." George, I hate to break it to you and your biographer, but it was even worse, it was nickels. And George acknowledged it was true. But as I read his early history, he really doesn't sound that cheap to me, he was a fair and honest man. Probably when salaries started skyrocketing in the 60's it was hard for him, he still remembered what he paid them back in the 20's.
What a man.

#67 Z said . . .Just posted on chicagobears.com. Jerry's interview with Larry Meyer:
LM: How much of a priority is upgrading the wide receiver position either in free agency or the draft?
JA: Naturally, we’re going to look at that real hard, in all likelihood in the draft. We’re not looking for backup wide receivers. What we want are potentially starting wide receivers. We have a nucleus of receivers that we feel good about in terms of twos, threes, fours and fives, and if we carried six, a sixth receiver. Part of that ties into special teams. What we’re looking at is the top of the wide receiver position. Where does that come from? It comes with a premium receiver in free agency if there’s one out there and/or in the draft. Yes, it’s a position that we are looking at.
READ BTW THE LINES!!! We're taking a WR in the first round unless Jerry makes an unlikely deal for a true #1. Darrius Hey-Bay-Bay, welcome to da bears!!March 4, 2009

#70 Phil from SATX said . . .This is almost as good as a Bears signing to me at this point. Even with similiar contract offers, a legend and one of the greatest Vikings of all time didn't want to stay and play there.
After 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, and six Pro Bowl appearances, free agent center Matt Birk is leaving the team.
Birk agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday afternoon. He will replace center Jason Brown, who this week signed a five-year $37.5 million contract with the St. Louis Rams. Birk will provide stability to the Baltimore blocking unit.
The four-year contract is worth $12 million, Six million dollars of the total is guaranteed money, and Birk will receive $9 million in the first two years of the deal. The contract is believed to be similar to the one offered by the Vikings.
March 4, 2009
#71 Damn Lions & Saints said . . .Well that's interesting, and I agree about the good news. That's a big contract to Birk for an old center - Rancid has already done the research on old centers hitting a wall, and it ain't good. Ravens may have screwed themselves there.
Here's the good news. JA is going to swing for a big FA WR (are there any left? Boldin?) or we ARE going WR with first pick. And the good news, there will be no doubt about actually using that new guy, riding him like they rode Matt Forte. And with the Omi signing, we have two starter tackles, so the real need there is guard, which we can easily get a really good one in the second round.
Hopefully everyone in the league remembers the Jared Allen debacle on St. Clair as much as everybody here does (boo!) and there will be little interest in him, so his price can remain as a backup. He can be backup, fill-in for guard as needed, and generally needs to be rewarded for his stoic overachieving work this year.
I'd love a few "b+" player additions to D in FA. Safety mostly - maybe a decent corner, add some guys that give us at least the hope of improvement but also give us more flexibility in the draft. I forget who wrote a few days ago, but he had it wrong - your hope in picking up FA's is not so you can then address needs in the draft, but so you can then take the best athlete available instead of being hamstrung with needs.
Was La-vern-a-news (despite what his momma calls him) worth $7MM per? Is he better than Berrian? Should we have done that deal? Someone opine, I don't know enough about him.

#73 The Ghost of Halas said . . .I sure would have liked to see Coles in Chicago. Too bad we suck at life.
If you ever had any reason to think that Cedric Benson was not an asshole:
Exibit A: "Sometimes it seemed I was going against some of the same guys I was going to war with during the weekend. We were supposed to be a team trying to achieve a common goal every Sunday, and sometimes during the week — maybe even on Sunday — it seemed I was battling against my own team, from all aspects: some player, some staff ... It just didn't seem to work, whether from what I just mentioned or not getting the ball enough."
Exibit B: "I never complained about there being too much contact, but I did suffer a separated shoulder in training camp, which is something that personally can upset you because the season is where it counts. If your own team is limiting you before you get to the season, I don't think that makes any sense."
Exibit C: "Of course I was unfairly treated or there would have been something come about. I would have had to do community service or something. Justice was served. The court system held up, and it just sucks that there was not enough support in Chicago — or belief in me in Chicago - to hang around or withstand seeing the truth come out."
Case closed.

Hoping for a losing season only makes players not want to come here if we suck. And not being active hardly at all in FA to improve and just depending on the draft can't be helping either. I have read a number of quotes from players that said a team taking steps to improve made a difference in their decision. If the money is really close there are only a few other factors. The organization (WINNING) and location I would think are the next biggest besides playing time.

I mean every where I looked we seemed to be landing a veteran free agent that plays with passion or we were in the running for big play receivers or they were interviewing people about how awesome our team has done so far this offseason or how even though we didnt land a couple guys we wanted (or needed) we were still heavily involved in negotiations that just fell through at the last second...
oh wait, that wasnt us... Shit...

It's not like we have a tough Division or anything. Geesh.

Denver has kept defensive lineman Kenny Peterson.
The Saints just announced they have signed cornerback Jabari Greer to a four-year deal.
The Broncos have signed Chris Simms to a two-year contract. The team has agreed to terms with 13 free agents.

#83 Z said . . .So, when you think about it, why would a good quarterback want to come here? Why would even a guy such as Chris Simms want to come here?
I continually lobby for the Bears to upgrade the position, get someone more accomplished than Kyle Orton, follow through on general manager Jerry Angelo’s claim that the whole franchise is “fixated’’ on getting the quarterback thing right.
In my country, “fixated’’ leads to fixing it. In the Bears’ parallel universe, it leads to Brett Basanez.
There’s Orton’s telling the Trib’s Fred Mitchell that he can get a better feel for the wide receivers if he doesn’t have to split reps. Oh, I get it: Orton’s in favor of competition if he’s not the starter, but sounds like he doesn’t want it if he’s No. 1 on the depth chart.

#85 Shady said . . .Its pick 19 of the NFL draft...the Bears just selected Heyward Bey...and other teams in the NFC North are just flat out scared. There is grumbles and murmurs and concerns in the Lions and Vikings draft rooms about what they will do to defend the Chicago Bears Offense in the 2009 season. The packers already gave up and half of their draft room is headed back to some boring town people call Green Bay. But the teams the Bears are facing in 09 will be mostly gloom because they are pretty sure, there is no way they will be able to obtain two safeties and two cornerbacks on their team to defend two of the fastest players in the league....with plenty of wiggle....there is just no hope.
Meanwhile the fastest tight end in the league (who is quite tall) is smiling watching at home knowing he will have plenty of chances deep over the middle of the field this year. Forte, just smiles, he already knows he can get it done with whatever he is working with and against.
Come on Bears!
Come on Jerry....get us another Forte pick!

#86 Anonymous said . . .Z I appreciate the updates, you make this site a one stop shop of sorts. Jeff, I'm surprised you didn't make any changes to the site considering all the good suggestions we had last year about polls and such.
Doesn't it seem strange that the Broncos, with all the recent Jay Cutler drama, signed ANOTHER QB to the depth chart?
I'm wondering, if the Bears believe they are CLOSE (close to what I'll never know), wouldn't it make sense to make a serious move to find that ONE guy who could potentially put them over the top? JA needs to find a play maker, a difference maker, someone who can single-handedly change the outcome of the game regardless of which side of the ball he plays on. I know it's easier said than done, but the Bears need to do their homework in preparation for this draft if they hope to find that kind of star.
I was reading some past blog entries from the 2008 offseason regarding FA and the draft, and a lot of the things we all said back then still hold true in 2009. The Bears seem to be content with their recent off season "hibernation" routine. JA calls it "sobering" but I call it strike three looking. This frugal franchise is putting a tremendous amount of stock into the upcoming draft. How many positions they need to address this year, all of 'em right?
Last year's draft was a mixed bag, but the selection of Matt Forte in the 2nd round helped save the 2008 season. Can you imagine the offense operating without Matt Forte?? That would be like watching the Bulls play without Derrick Rose.
WR, QB, RB, OT, DE it doesn't really matter what position he plays, the Bears need to find that guy who can make an immediate impact in the 2009 win-loss column. Do your homework JA, don't fuck this one up because if you do, you won't have anyone to blame but yourself.

With all their drast picks why wouldn't Detroit be on Cutler. Also the Queens have to have him on their mind. I won't believe he's staying until after the draft at this point.
