Cutler. Period.

Thursday, April 2, 2009 | Jeff

Let's put things in perspective.

I like Kyle Orton. I like his toughness. I like his leadership. I like his calm under both game-time pressure (see: pre-disaster Atlanta) and intense fan/media scrutiny (see: playing quarterback in Chicago). I like that Kyle Orton was able to win double-digit games as the team's 2005 starter and earn a demotion to clipboard-holding third-stringer without so much as saying a word to the media about "unfair treatment". I like Kyle Orton. And I want him on the Chicago Bears.

But Kyle Orton is no Jay Cutler. Kyle Orton is the type of quarterback the offensive-apologists of years past (of which I've been one) have utilized to defend their inane arguments. "Chicago is a running football team," they'll tell you. "They rely on running the ball and playing defense to win championships. They don't need a big-arm quarterback." It may have held true throughout the 1980s and early 90s when Joe Gibbs' Redskins could seemingly win with anybody playing the position and Bill Parcells won the Lombardi with Jeff Hostetler under center. But not any longer.

NFL football teams, regardless of their home weather conditions, must show the ability to stretch the ball downfield. Jay Cutler has one of the three or four best deep ball arms in the game and da Bears currently possess what is potentially the league's most dynamic speed receiver. What teams didn't fear due to Orton's deep inaccuracy will now be the focus of their weekly defensive game-planning. That's when Matt Forte finds himself gashing front fours at ten-yards-a-clip. That's when field goal drives become quick sixes. That's when you're a contender to win the whole damn thing.

Getting Cutler isn't a smart move for the Chicago Bears. It is a franchise-altering move. It is the kind of move that changes the identity from top-to-bottom. Halas Hall can shed their label of being cheaper than a street-walker in downtown Atlantic City. The offense can enter into the 2009 with expectations beyond "not screwing things up." Jay Cutler brings hope to an organization that seems to be priming the fan base for another .500 campaign.

This is a great player - not a potentially great player. This is a great player who happens to play a position this organization has coveted for the better part of three decades. As a human being, I respect Kyle Orton a ton and hope the Bears can make a deal with Denver that keeps KO on the roster. As a fan of the Chicago Bears - with dreams of a Super Bowl title dancing in my head - I want this club to do whatever is necessary to walk into Lambeau Field on a warm September evening with the most talented quarterback in the century-long history of the franchise.

Too bad Cutler doesnt play defense. The Bears' defense is atrocious, terrible, and awful. It doesnt matter if the bears get cutler because even if they score 35, the defense will allow 40 points. Josh Bullocks is your new safety? LOL. He came from a team with an even worse defense in NO.

But if Cutler goes to the Vikes on the other hand, its pretty much a guaranteed Super bowl for them along with Adrian Peterson running for at least 2000 yards.

I found this site last year among a bunch of other Bears sites, and I always went back and forth between them until one day when Jeff posted something that was down right beautiful and came the closest to moving me to tears since first seeing Brian's Song so many years ago...here's an excerpt
"There's a negativity throughout the Chicago fans and media that has become so overwhelming that I sat awake last night wondering, "Why do I think this team is going to win games?" Can it be the residue of a Super Bowl run that feels like nineteen years ago, nevermind nineteen months? Can it be the preseason success of Kyle Orton? Can it be that Sunday night will be the first time since the 2007 regular season that this defensive unit will hit the field together?...Which begs the question, "why?" Why optimism? Why look for something to believe in? Why not act like so many of you who'll walk through the tunnel of the 2008 season expecting nothing and act pleasantly surprised should the club find themselves in the postseason? Answer: because that's not me. I watch every sport on earth - golf, tennis, racing included - but I live and die with the Chicago Bears. If you don't believe "this could be the year" then why turn the television on? Why spend three hours a day operating a website? The defeatist attitude is the sports fan way of keeping an emotional distance as a mean of self-protection. But if you don't know what it's like to have your heart ripped out in defeat, you'll never understand the true joy of victory.
When I sit on the third stool from the left end of the bar in Josie Woods Pub on Sunday night, I'll remember what it was like the last time I sat there to watch Bears versus Colts. Remember how it felt to see Hester. Remember how much it hurt to see Hayden. And I'll believe maybe we can be there again. Maybe this year."

Since then, this is the only Bears site I come to...including DA site. I loved that fire, and seeing it in someone else made me PROUD to be a bears fan. I only have one question. It's obvious the fire is still there, but where's the optimism that Jeff spoke so eloquently about. Seeing news about the Bears on PFT used to make me happy to come here and see Jeff's take. Not so anymore. I could be dead wrong (and hope I am), but I see someone whose unadulterated hope in the Bears has turned sour, leading to the pessimistic posts I have seen.

I'm just asking you to find it, Jeff. If it's still there, let it out...

So true that while not investing yourself fully may protect you from some of the pain of losing, it will also most likely numb you from some of the joy of winning. You have to risk it. The highs are worth the lows in life.

I know that the team had a pretty bad defense last year (pretty big understatement) but people are overlooking some big changes that were made this year.

We now have the BEST defensive coaching staff in the entire league.

Lovie Smith is one of the three BEST defensive coordinators in the league. I think he is the best but saying top 3 is safer. The only guys that are even close to him are Dick Lebeau and Jim Johnson. Oh and dont forget that he was a LB coach for the Tampa teams that had the GREAT LB corps.

We have the best D line coach in maybe the HISTORY of the NFL. How many other coaches can go from being a position coach (that isn't a QB coach) to being one of the 32 head coaches in the NFL. Granted the guy was a terrible head coach based on his record but you can not deny the fact that his assention to being a head coach is VERY IMPRESSIVE.

You're supposed to be a legit Sports News outlet, J.T., an it's absolutely UNETHICAL for you to pull that kind of crap . I 'd give you a "Hey the Broncos JUST traded Cutler to Tampa (pause) April Fool" But to perpetrate a hoax like that for 20 + minutes is irrisponsible. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, this guy allows himself to comment on (and routinely defined the senile Al Davis) the putrid Raiders when he, in fact, is a Raider employee.

Yes, too bad that those years are gone. In the 2000s you can't win a Super Bowl without a QB as good as Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson.

I'm excited about Cutler too, but I don't know if we an afford him. What is the price for Cutler going to be? Do you think it will be less than, say, Orton+1st rounder+another day 1 pick? And is that going to make us better than using those picks?

We have a lot of places to get better. Keeping those picks might be more effective than putting all our eggs in the (still somewhat unproven) Cutler basket.

April 2, 2009

#23 The Ghost of Halas said . . .

do, I had thought about that. Washington is apparently a big player for Cutler. If they got him they probably would release or trade Jason Campbell. I don't think Campbell is worth consideration. If he is better than Kyle then it is negligible.

You're also quite correct about the defense. They have made from great moves at defensive coaching, and Coach Smith calling defensive plays can't get worse than Babich. But, as far as I can see, there is no secondary right now. Charles Tillman aside, there is nobody I trust back in coverage. I don't think Kevin Payne is particularly good, sacrificing a hard hit for tackling. Craig Steltz is unproven. Nathan Vasher has been sub-par for two years. I haven't warmed up to Corey Graham yet. Zack Bowman was pretty kick ass against John's nordic assholes in October. There's just way too many question marks for my comfort.

Jason Campbell is a very solid QB. He definitely has a stronger arm than KO but he also has played in a different offense every year since his freshman year at Auburn I believe. Would be great to get him for a 3rd and let him and KO compete if we miss on the whole Cutler thing.

Mark Schlereth from ESPN earlier today stated that the Broncos would be interested in trading Cutler for a Defensive Tackle and a first round draft pick, I think the Bears have a great chance now to close the deal. Marcus Harrison or Tommie Harris and our first round pick and maybe a 2nd round pick next year would be a great trade.

Iowa, great post, post more often please, loved Jeff's response too, and it's true - the long dark days of the offseason bring out the pessimism in Jeff and many others, wait til draft time! However, I will say THIS offseason has been VERY interesting!

I spent some time comparing Jay and Kyle's stats. One strong mark in Kyle's favor (yes, there is one) - is red zone efficiency. I interpreted this rather than looking at stats, so the numbers may say something different - but Jay's pass-happy offense was 3rd in the league in yards but only 16th in the league in points.

I believe (and this is based on observance and not numbers) that Kyle is one of the better QBs in the league at getting things done in the red zone. That's the time that his arm looks the best.

It can be a little tricky to separate a QB and his receivers, they are different links on the same chain - but take a look at Denver's receivers - two guys just at and over 1000 yards each. TWO! Our best? Devin Hester! at 600 and change!

Now Cutler gets credit for being the guy throwing to them. But I don't think many of us blame Orton too much for the low numbers of the Bears receivers. The receivers simply blew.

Cutler maintains consistently higher QB ratings than Orton. That means something. But he does not appear to be as good as Orton when the rubber meets the road, in the scoring. That's something that doesn't show up very directly in QB ratings.

I would love a scenario that brings Cutler here and somehow we can keep Kyle too. I would accept a scenario that involved a swap of Kyle, if we didn't have to mortgage the farm to do it.

Mortgaging the farm to get Cutler, though, and lose what is to me a very promising, and very Bear-like, QB in Kyle Orton - I'm not in favor of it. I just don't think the difference in upside between Cutler and Orton is that great.

Remember the money, too - Cutler will not only wipe us out of draft picks, he will immediately tie up huge money in the QB position. Nothing wrong with that, if it's worth it - but look at cheap Kyle - cheap Kyle who compiled a better winning record despite doing part of it on a severely gimpy leg - and think about spending that money on Oline, on receivers, on a pass rusher, on our next great safety.

But either way it goes, I'm already standing up and applauding Jerry - who has in a short period of time converted me from a daily lambasting of him for doing nothing to being the busiest man in show business! THAT'S what I wanted to see! Way to go Jerry!

Whatever you do, LAND ORLANDO PACE!!!

Also agree with Z - the first rounder plus Tommie Harris and another pick next year I'd do in a second. Believe it or not, I'd even consider a Hester trade, if it came with a trade of one of their good receivers. A year ago that would have been blasphemy, I'd have punched myself in the face for saying such a thing. As of today, methinks we've stolen his magic, perhaps forever. Sincerely, desperately hope I'm wrong.

But a trade involving some of our overrated players instead of a passel of draft picks would be the way to go.

I guess if we were to get Cutler, I'd rather see Orton go than stay. I think he at least deserves to play somewhere. He has in essence paid his dues on the bench. So how bout Orton + Harris and next year's first round. I say next year's because if Orton doesn't work out there, there aren't really any QBs in this year's draft to like especially one's that will be there at 18.

Then we would still have capacity to improve our needs, get a solid QB and they would get a servicable QB that shows up to practice even when it's not mandatory, a possible steal in Harris if he stays healthy and a pick next year to address anything that falls through. I mean it's a first year HC, they hired about every FA out there, and they haven't had a winning season under Cutler; if Orton can even get them above 500, the gm looks like a genius.

Fair market value for Cutler? That's up to the Broncos. I think they have let it be known want a first, a third PLUS a player who is than just a "warm body". If you're Denver do you want that body to be the "Under-achieving, chronic knee issues" Tommy Harris? A "clearly declining" Brian Uhrlacher? A "Couldn't win a starting spot on a pass-rushed challenged defensive line" Marcus Harrison? Perhaps the "Shadow of his former self and candidate to be released" Nathan Vasher? I'm an Orton guy, but I think Cutler would be an upgrade. Yeah, he couldn't get the Broncos into the playoffs but their defense is a joke AND Cutler was down to like, #8 on the depth chart at running back in pretty short order last season . Denver was still in the hunt only because of Cutler. OK, OK. I hear you. Cutler and referee Ed "Look at me, look at me" Hochuli. As for Jason Campbell, BDG, if a guy who watches him (Steve Czaban) like we watch the Bears isn't sold on him, neither am I so we'll just agree to disagree.

April 2, 2009

#34 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Harris is a dominant DT. Health is a concern but the guy has been to 3x the pro bowls that Cutler has.

Urlacher is "clearly declining"? So one bad year and he is in an apparent career nose dive? Didn't he just register his 3rd highest tackle total in 07? Didn't he have more combined picks and sacks than any of the LBs in the pro bowl in 07 and create quite a stir over the snubbing? Didn't he just register his 2nd highest tackle total in 06?

In 06 and 07 he played some of his most dominant football.. yes the stats changed, he made less tackles but doubled his passes defended and set a career high in picks, even retruned one to the house, I watched it.

Then he gets stuck into a defense in 08 where he spends 2/3 of the plays running away from the line of scrimmage at the snap and not being set in a position to make reads and we are all amazed that his numbers are way down and call for trading him except that noone probably wants him? WTF?

Devil's Advocate. From an article against getting Cutler:

Cutler threw for more than 4,500 yards last season and made the Pro Bowl, but when the Broncos needed him to be ''the man'' and take them to the playoffs, he spit the bit.

Denver lost to Carolina, Buffalo and San Diego in its final three games. Cutler, who earlier in the year said he had a stronger arm than Hall of Famer John Elway, threw two touchdown passes and was intercepted four times in that stretch. His passer rating was lower than 50 in two of the losses.

Cutler threw 25 touchdown passes with 18 interceptions and posted an above-average 86 rating in 2008. He also contributed largely to bad losses to Kansas City -- after a 3-0 start -- and to Oakland in Week 12 at home.

Minnesota also is interested, but several members of the coaching staff have seen enough red flags from Cutler that they reportedly are attempting to dissuade coach Brad Childress from pressing the issue.

The New York Jets also are in the Cutler sweepstakes as they seek Brett Favre's successor. Veteran safety Kerry Rhodes has stated publicly he won't welcome the self-assured Cutler on board.

Here is the rest.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU SAY!
Orton will never even DREAM about a 4000 yard season. I would love to trade Harris and keep Orton as a good backup but seriously, there isn't even a contest between Orton and Cutler. Orton can not complete a down field pass and without striking that fear into the opposing D then Forte will NEVER live out his full potential, putting more pressure on our QB and further straining our line.
What if Orton doesn't succeed? Then we're right back to not having a qb and having no real options to getting one besides drafting one and hoping to the football gods that he pans out (Rex Grossman anyone). No, keeping Orton and still getting Cutler gives us OPTIONS.
Nab Cutler, just do it.

April 2, 2009

#37 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Cutler actually gives you undeniably less options. Orton won't stay if we get Cutler, they have to have some kind of QB in compensation.

If you trade away Harris and Orton and a draft pick, which would probably be what it would take. You have traded 3 players for one. Thats less.

And, if he comes here and flops; noone would want him, you'd be stuck paying out the tail end of his contract for the next four years, tying up cap space and causing problems on and off the field with his attitude. It'd be like having a big Rex but with a long term investment.

If he is great on the other hand, we would keep him for the long term and be set at QB but we wouldn't want to trade him... so you still have less options.

April 2, 2009

#38 Urlacher FTW said . . .

And who cares about 4000 yards? You can get Cutler on your fantasy football team no matter who he plays for and that is the only place where yards convert to points.

And Jeff, with respect to winning superbowls without great QB play, those days are not past.

Dilfer and Johnson were not great QBs, they won on Defense.. and um that Pittsburgh team.. Roth was awful this season and while he might have good seasons under his belt he was not good at all this year and in their first win he posted like the lowest QB rating by the winning QB in SB history. So teams still win with Defense and running. The thing is that there has to be talent spread throughout a team, if one unit is lax another can carry them a game or so. Our entire offensive scheme sucks, our receivers suck, our Oline can't run block for squat...
You could stick Peyton Manning back there for us and it wouldn't help much. Peyton running toward the wrong end zone throwing to Des Clark standing behind Kreutz in the middle of the field will be just as ugly.

This is Orton's last year under contract so we may lose him anyway and get nothing in return except maybe a low compensatory pick the next year. Sun Times' Brad Biggs:

According to reports, the Denver Broncos have the pedal to the metal in efforts to drive Jay Cutler right out of town.

Word is that a deal could be struck as soon as Friday for the Pro Bowl quarterback. Washington, Tampa Bay, the New York Jets and Bears are believed to be primary contenders. ESPN.com and the Tampa Tribune are reporting that the Broncos want at least two first-round draft picks and it is not necessary that they receive a quarterback in return.

That has to help the Bears as it's no sure thing Denver would want to receive Kyle Orton to put him in the mix with Chris Simms as the next quarterback of the Broncos. It could be Denver will pursue a passer in the draft. The Broncos' own first-round pick is No. 12 overall. The Broncos likely want to put this embarrassing fiasco behind them as soon as possible as it is not going to go away easily for their fan base. Consummating a deal quickly will allow Denver to switch the focus to the draft and prepare for the team's first minicamp April 17-19.

Our colleague Mike Mulligan reported that the action got so intense for Cutler on Wednesday that the Broncos stopped answering the phones. They were having teams communicate via e-mail and text messages. Here is a comprehensive timeline by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson on the Mile High meltdown that is leading to this trade that that was really unthinkable even just a week ago.

I think the Bears have an edge over everyone else today. I have a feeling the Grudenless Bucs won't squeeze the trigger and they might not have enough to shoot toward Denver anyway.

The Broncos already said they would prefer to trade out of their conference, so that puts the Jets in a bad way.

Nobody, and I mean Nobody wants to play in Detroit, and even with the first overall pick, the Lions don't have enough.

Washington is the only franchise other than Chicago who can make a major power-play for Cutler. And I believe they and Chicago are the number one contenders for the beleaguered quarterback.

#45 Urlacher FTW said . . .

After HaynesWorth I wouldn't think Washington would have the cap room left to sign me, much less eat Cutlers ballooning multi-million dollar deal and still have room left to sign any draft picks at all.
Of course I guess maybe that could be the deal Cutler for all 7 of our picks, we can't afford them.

Well, if we keep Orton and get Cutler that does give us depth at QB. And the O-line may be starting to come together. Hmm we still suck at WR though, I loved how Angelo said he wanted to address enough of the holes in FA to not be forced to picking a position... so how are we not forced to grab a wideout at this time? You say you want only startable WRs? Sign Holt, he can start, please.

Z if its as simple as Cutler for 2 #1s,
A.) I'd say done in a heartbeat.
B.) I'm sure they would be done and have it up on the website already.

Denver had to try and squeeze as much out of this deal as they can so they don't end up looking like complete idiots. Although I don't know why people are considering us as more of a favorite just because Cutler said he wants to come here.. if he isn't answering his phone I doubt they are concerned with his hapiness and just want the best deal they can get. If anything I would think the fact that they no longer need a QB in return and only care about 2 first round picks would make Detroit far and away the front runner seeing as they can give them 2 1st round picks this year.

April 2, 2009

#49 BDG said . . .

How does Detroit not have enough? They own two 1st round picks and a lot of picks this year and the player has no choice where he will go. He could threaten retirement I guess. Which could really hurt backfire. If I were Denver I would ship him there just for punishment.
Campbell would be a steal for a 3rd. Completion percentage, yards, and td's all increased all three years as a starter. He would be a great option for us as a back up / competition to KO if Washington gets Cutler.
The thing that is really scaring me now is that if we don't get Cutler we may have to offer KO a contract before the season starts or he may walk after having a solid year on principle. He won't say a word just leave.

April 2, 2009

#50 BDG said . . .

I don't understand why people are saying why would he want to go here or there? He has a contract. He has to play or retire where he gets traded to.(See the last traded Denver QB Jake Plummer) He can renegotiate it. But this is not His choice
I have to believe that Washington is the front runner now. The way they have shown total disregard for draft picks and contracts, I believe they will come in and blow everyone else out with an offer even if they have to give up and extra 1st rounder that nobody else will in future drafts.

Z, BDG - If the deal didn't go for Cutler, and Orton played his ass off in 09; he couldn't just walk away. We'd just franchise him if it got bad, then either trade him tagged for a high pick or work out a deal.

April 2, 2009

#52 Z said . . .

Isn't the franchise tag for QB going to be like almost $17 mill? Do you think The Old Lady is willing to let that happen? We should have franchised BB IMO for a year and see what happened. Maybe could have traded him.

Does Denver want the #1 pick and have to guarantee $30-35 mill to an unproven QB?

They would prefer to keep him out of the AFC so the Jets and Cleveland seem less likely.

Eagles fans would riot if they trade McNabb.

I think Was, Tampa and us are the favorites. Nice to be in the mix.

Will Tampa's new Chuckyless regime be bold enough to pull it off?

Does WAS have the picks and cap to?

Will Denver say they didn't get enough and not trade after hearing all the offers?

Is 2 1st's and Orton too much?

Or 2 1st's and a 4th or a 3rd?

April 2, 2009

#53 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Z - although that would be a lot especially for a guy like Orton, if it was that or get nothing it may not be a bad deal. Plus 2010 is a non cap year., so you could renegotiate it with most of the money frontloaded to take up the tag money.

Personally, if I were the Broncos, I would trade him to Detroit simply because.. well I don't know if they'd ever have to eat crow over that. He would be doomed to fail there and where else could they annex him and be less likely to face him in a Superbowl.

April 2, 2009

#54 The Ghost of Halas said . . .

Haha. I like it, Urlacher. But if Washington did not believe they could have (clear) cap room for Cutler they wouldn't be in the mix.

April 2, 2009

#55 Z said . . .

Do you guys really think the owners will let it come to no cap with the Daniel Snyders of the league ready to be the NFL version of the Yankees every year?

April 2, 2009

#56 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Z - personally, I don't think it would change much. There are already so many ways to get around the cap, with front or back loading contracts, there are ways to push some of the signing bonuses off the cap. Plus , how are the Yanks doing lately?

I like the idea of the cap honestly, but I believe it needs a lot of work, ie.. no signing bonus (so that all the money applies to the cap), no front or back loading ( a 5 year 30 million dollar contract pays 6 million a year period). I'd also like to see more done with the tags like requiring a player to have been offered a contract and rejected it to be tagged and tagged players to be un-tradeable. So that is used more to keep something you can't lose this year as opposed to turning players into bargaining chips. Like many things imho the nfl player contracts are too "lawyered" up and just need a push back to good old common sense.

I just read on a blog that a guy who works near the Denver stadium just saw Cutler driving into the stadium. I would assume something has happened.

I just saw a scroll on ESPN where Cutler put his house in Denver on the market last month. Humorous.

April 2, 2009

Agreed Urlacher.

And while watching the Yankees choke gives me great joy, I still wish they couldn't take the top 2 hitting FA's and top 3 pitching FA's every year so my teams can have some too. Those bastards.

April 2, 2009

#61 zmac said . . .

To the people saying why would Cutler want to play here or, no one wants to play in Detroit... does that matter? Cutler does choose who he plays for, Denver chooses the best return package.

I just made a website to give a little credit to Orton before we throw him under the bus - this is not intended to say Orton is better than Cutler, just that the asking price is way too high when you take everything into consideration:

MrX... THANK YOU.

Cutler could come in and be a good QB. He is a good QB. No question. BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THERE IS NO ONE TO THROW THE BALL TOO.

Hester would be a better receiver with Jay Cutler. But Earl Bennett's problem is learning the offensive scheme, Rashied cannot hold on to the ball, Brandon Rideau has been on the bench for longer than I've been alive, and ... and... oh wait we DONT HAVE ANY OTHER RECEIVERS ON THE ROSTER!.

Take these picks, take Vaser, take Wale and make...the...deal...for...BOLDIN.

Anquan Boldin makes Hester a better receiver, he makes Orton a better quarterback, he makes Matt Forte a better running back and he makes our offense exposive!

We averaged 23.4 points per game last year. 23.4! THats ungodly in Chicago. Now upgrade Marty Booker and Brandon Lloyd with Boldin... SERIOUSLY?!?!?!

I understand the desire for Cutler, and if we get him, sure Ill be happy. But I will be much happier with Anquan Boldin, who by the way, will be playing for a new contract.

April 2, 2009

#92 iowabear said . . .

First of all, part of me is excited that the bears do have a dynamic player at quarterback. I do have the opinion that Jeff has...that every year could be "the year." It comes from watching too many sports films. I look forward to what Cutler can do in Chicago this year and in the year's following.

But let us not forget what we lost. We lost a man in Kyle Orton. A man who was clutch and marched us down the field to win. He was a man who was such a part of this team that he brought himself back from almost having his foot torn off to give his all in helping his team toward victory. He was one of the only men I remember able to stand underneath the pressure of being the quarterback of the chicago bears and take his critiques in stride.

I am honestly saddened that Kyle Orton is no longer a Bear...because while he might not have the physical gifts of Jay Cutler, he most definitely had the fire, drive, and humility that I want in a signal caller for my team.

I just hope that Cutler's intensity FOR HIS TEAM can burn half as bright.

I'm in total and complete shock. Thank you, Iowa, for a fantastic post. We should devote a whole thread to thanking Kyle Orton for being one of the few bright rays of light for our team over the last two years.

But now, Cutler is in charge, and I'll be pulling the reins on his bandwagon! No first this year or next, that hurts, hopefully next year's will be

THE 32ND PICK IN THE FIRST ROUND!!!!!

GO CUTLER!!!! GO BEARS!!!!

GO JERRY ANGELOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

April 2nd shall now be forever known as "Jerry Angelo Day".

Jerry you have taken the impression and reputation of the entire Chicago Bears organization and have forever flipped it on it's head.

You admitted the importance of the QB position to a team and how it has faltered under your watch, and today my friend, you proved you are a man of your word. I told you to have faith in Angelo!

Not only did you trade for a franchise QB, but you solidified the line with another FA O-Line signing.

Any chance Obama had something to do with this?

I am Bears DRUNK today my friend. Pass the kool-aid and ENJOY!

Fuck the packers,

AND GO BEARS!!!!!!!!

April 2, 2009

#120 The Ghost of Halas said . . .

Bolin isn't going to happen. The best, most realistic options are Torry Holt and/or the Draft.

Cutler does not help the defensive secondary issues, but the Bears suddenly got the best quarterback in the NFC North. Coupled with one of the best running backs in the division and maybe a decent wide out or two down the road, we've got ourselves an offensive football team, ladies and germs.

April 2, 2009

#121 The Ghost of Halas said . . .

Oh...and Orlando Pace was an amazing move as well. Omiyale could replace Garza. Then the line would be Shaffer, Beekman, Kreutz, Omiyale, and Pace.

Well it's done excitement is in the air. Still think it was a bit much but if he turns into the next Farve like his potential it would be a steal.Potential is a scary thing though. I will remain cautiously optimistic. I like to see JA making bold moves to get us back to to where we need to be though. The Pace signing is a wonderful thing.
I wish Kyle Orton all the luck in the world in his NFL career and thank him for his time with the Bears. I have no doubt he will be a successful QB in this league for years.
The needs have fallen to WR,WR,WR, S,DE and future OL help

April 2, 2009

#124 Sarcastiholic said . . .

I think this a good move. The Bears had to do something and trying to figure out which 3nd round OL to take in the first round wasn't going to do it.
