1. It is a success if either Jarron Gilbert or Henry Melton is a productive part of the defensive line rotation when the Bears open the season in Green Bay.
2. It is a failure if Juaquin Iglesias spends a year learning all the positions and catching no passes. This kid, simply by being drafting in the third round, is now the fifth receiver on the depth chart. That puts him on the active roster, barring any free agent signings before camp.
3. Jerry Angelo's failed attempt to acquire Anquan Boldin on Saturday should send a signal to Bears' fans: Angelo's turned a corner. With the Giants and Eagles and Titans drafting wide receivers in the first round, the Bears are now among only a handful of clubs (Jets, Ravens) still in the running for AB. Call me crazy but I don't think this deal is dead and I think we can still get him prior to the summer. It may require creating another boring draft weekend in 2010.
4. Johnny Knox's official nickname is Jackass. Nothing else will be accepted on this website.
ADDENDUM 4/28 - From David Haugh's column: I like that Jay Cutler sent a text message to new wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias within hours of the Bears taking Iglesias in the third round, reaching out to establish immediate rapport. It won't make Iglesias any easier to find on third downs or hasten his way into the WR rotation, but it meant something to the rookie. "[Cutler] texted me and I feel good about it already," Iglesias told his hometown paper, the Killeen (Texas) Daily Herald. "I'm just ready to get there and start doing my job."

When it comes to Boldin, I agree that the deal is not dead. But as times goes on it becomes less and less likely. Still...you've worked miracles before. You said sign Jay Cutler and the Bears listened. Perhaps Mr. Angelo is becoming more aggressive, finally, at his 29th NFL Draft.

To bad, he threw alot in INT when he had good receivers. Can't imagine how many he'll throw with sorry ass receivers.
Good luck.

#5 The Ghost of Halas said . . .I think what Jeff's referring to is mortgaging the farm one year out as a way to get him. We still have 2010 draft picks to give away!
Interesting that our team is getting some national love for our draft! I personally like the fact that there is some concensus about us getting value picks, and also the fact that I knew some of these guys. Iglesias, I think, is a steal - he's the guy we thought we were getting in Bennett. Most thought he would go in the 2nd. Anytime you're the Heisman trophy winner's top target that's a pretty good pedigree.
Melton may have been a reach but I still like the pick - and expect him to get immediate looks for goal line offense. I watched virtually every one of his touchdowns at UT and I think we're getting a very versatile player in him. I might even like him better at fullback than on D line! But he's got upside.
I didn't know anything about Jarron Gilbert, but most think that was a big time value pick, and I totally agree about the discussion going on yesterday about the importance of improving our pass rush, and how that will ripple through the secondary. Like most of the guys we picked, he seems very versatile, able to play inside or outside.
D.J. Moore was another guy that dropped, I love the growing Vandy contingent for chemistry purposes, good pick there.
Regarding Jackass, I'm just gearing up for another bout of love-at-first-training-camp-sight that never gets to play. How about those draft guys with that great video? I wonder if they've done any on any of our other guys? 3rd fastest at the combine plus hands? Hopefully there's SOMETHING we can do with him.
Another OLB? But at least he's pedigreed, from Ohio State. We seem to bust faster at this position than any other (present company excluded of course, but they were picked a long time ago), maybe because we don't draft high enough.
Not going to talk about the 6th and 7th rounders. It was curious that the one guy many of us wanted at free safety, they didn't. I'm sure they have their reasons.
Overall I think they did a great job on the draft, and hopefully the two receivers they added will really help. Hope that there's some FA activity now with a free safety.
I agree with Jeff - it ain't over yet with Boldin!

As for Mushin's infamous comment, based on his last season with the Bears, it was NEVER valid. That year, Bears recievers were #2 in the NFL in dropped passes and he led the way. Mushin. I looked it up. In Farsi it means "whoops".

#8 Albert In Tucson said . . .I have to say I'm happy with the draft. It was a lousy draft for safties, so why take one. It was hard for me to see us trade the pick and then have Seattle take Unger, a guy I really liked and had been begging for on here for a long time. But after this offseason, I'm not complaining. If you haven't seen the video of Gilbert jumping out of the pool, it's pretty cool. I'm not saying it definitely translates to the football field, but its one hell of a party trick. My favorite guy out of all of them is Iglesias, it would be nice if we decide to actually give him a real uniform for games and not just the practice one.

After seeing Gonzalez go for a 2nd round pick in 2010 alone I am pretty sure we have the ammo. Dusty, Vasher, and the 2010 2nd round pick should be enough and we wouldn't be out anything we didn't replace in the draft. Would end up being about what the Jets gave up to get Sanchez in the 1st round and that's about the value they want out of Boldin.
If he could get Boldin here and Bowman actually turns out to be a good FS, I would shut up about JA forever.

The writing was on the wall...
I love our draft, and I think Jackass is the sleeper from day one, and Rash Davis (thanks for the memories, honestly) will not make the team. This guy will be a match-up problem for our opponents. Two 4.3 guys on opposite sides of the ball is tough to defense (escpecially with Olsen lurking in the middle/flat, who will embark on his pro-bowl season this year).
JA illuded to the fact that Boldin wants too much money, which was one of the reasons why the deal fell through. He is NOT worth 9-10 million a year. If that is his price let some other team overpay for his services.
Bottom line on this offseason to date - we are legitamate contenders to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

Hester already play's Knox's role. So unless they think that Knox can replace Hester and therefore they can use Hester in a trade, I dont really see the point in this pick either. #22 BDG said . . .I've spent the last 24 hours looking for any sort of thing I can get on the Bears draft.
Likeable things: Jarron Gilbert coming in and getting Lovie's endorsement on being in line to play as an under tackle/three technique.
Iglesias and Knox being bears. I really believe that Knox has the ability to be this year's DeShean Jackson, minus the idiocy.Intriguing things: Just this one. The Bears picked up Lance Louis and he was listed on NFL.com as a TE who weighed in at 303lbs. I checked further and saw he was projected as a guard. So I went back to Da Site and believe I read that he is still intended to be a TE. Has there ever been a TE on a 53 man roster that big before, even as a blocker?
Dislikeable things: That I spent all day at work on Saturday, watching other teams picked guys I wanted on the Bears, only to watch Jerry trade out of Day 1. That's it...I really like the draft class, so I have nothing to bitch about.

I agreed with about everything JA said in that interview. I'm so pumped for this season I can't stand it. as Duff once said to me "Kick the fucking ball already" haha.
Seriously though I think the draft was a major success in that it created competition all over the field, it addressed needs and it protects our future in a different positions. Of course they need to play the games still to find out who is as good as he looks, but I think he did an outstanding job looking at the whole picture with this draft.
I agree the Boldin thing isn't totally dead, but I also think Arizona was using the trade rumors as more of a ploy to tell Boldin his value isn't as high as he thinks and try to sign him cheaper. I think it could back fire with Boldin holding out but he doesn't have a lot of leverage. He has a contract for (2) more years at around 6 mil. per. I doubt he wants to lose too much of that holding out.
I would rather see the Bears look into Leroy Hill to put next to Briggs and Urlacher. Since he is a UFA now it would only cost money for him. Let Jay work with what we got on Offense and improve the D with another stud YOUNG LB.
For the next 10 + years you will never hear a WR say "Chicago is the place wr's go to die"
Some of the undrafted free agents look promising too. Great time to LOVE the BEARS.April 27, 2009
#24 Duff Diggler said . . .Actually, isn't "Sprinkles" Iglesias the fourth WR automatically? Great value at the bottom of R3.
1. Hester, 2. Bennett, 3. Davis, 4. Iglesias, 5. "Jackass" Knox, unless Rideau or Kinder plays lights-out.I really like the mix of raw athletic talents and undervalued, polished products in this draft:
Gilbert, Melton and Knox all have very high potentials. Any one of them could become an elite starter on the league. Iglesias and Moore do not, but they were very good values whose instincts and refined technique can immediately help Da Bears at positions of need.
Freeman and Afalava are partially special teams picks, though I like the former's chances to push Jamar/HH/Roach next year.

What have you seen in Iglesias to not like? He doesn't have blazing speed but EVERYTHING else you see or hear sounds promising.Great hands, good blocker, good run after the catch moves/vision. No way possible he doesn't make this team, and I expect he will contribute this year. I think he is a better version of Bennett which I know didn't play last year but they will both be very reliable possesion type wr's. Knox looks great with his quickness and hands. He should be able to take Rashied Davis's spot in the slot. We can keep Hester on the outside and have a Wes Welker type working the middle of the field. The fact is the average size of nfl wr's is about 6'. I agree it would be great to get a big guy, but there just are not that many of them. In this draft there was (5) decent prospects over 6'2"
Britt 1st rd.
Murphy-4th round. could have took a chance on him but he is a BIG project.
Barden-Gone before we picked again(1st pick would have been too early for him)
Turner- gone before we picked again(huge reach on him too)
Robiskie-targeted but gone before 49
Hopefully they can get Rideau active this year and make him a red zone target. I'm sure they would consider Plaxico too if he gets his law problems straightened out and suspensions.

#27 Urlacher FTW said . . .I wonder why Kellen Davis and the Lance Louis new guy can't be targeted as "big receivers?" Iglesias is 6' 1", btw. And for me, I rather have a receiver who gets open because of his "quicks" versus his pure speed - I think of Wes Welker when I say that.
April 27, 2009
#28 FRESNOizRUDE said . . .Iglesias will make the team. He comes in day one not knowing the offense as #3. Better size, hands, and speed than Davis and is a natural receiver. If he picks up the O quick he will challenge Bennett for the 2 spot. He is a natural possesion receiver and if they just stick to teaching him one spot like the slot, we could see him this year and soon.
My hope is that Knox and Rideaux can push Davis off the team - Kindler, Davis, and Aromaofshoes will hopefully be off the 53 man roster. Iglesias is a much better blocker than Davis as well, I saw him put a safety on his ass last year, which is more than Roberto Garza can do .... snap.
I really wish they would have grabbed up Duke instead of that midget corner but other than that I liked the draft. Phantom I think we knew that those three were coming into final year, it just really didn't matter much.. Ogun, past his prime and kinda finished unless he can prove otherwise; Anderson, a one year phenom who needs to prove otherwise; and a backup DT convert Special Teamer... all three of them essentially are competing for the same contract, should be good for us. Plus in an uncapped year and the time he's put in Anderson can't leave as a free agent anyway.

Dikta nice link. How the hell can anyone give the JETS an A for there draft. They traded everything plus 3 players for 3 players. I think there draft was awful. They better hope Sanchez is a stud(which I don't) or this draft will be a colossal failure.

Eric Peterman, undrafted free agent wide receiver from Northwestern, is a steal. he was a year behind me in high school and was our starting QB. he won a state title in track back in the day too and is the definition of a high character player. I can respectyour opinion on that. I agree I think he is closer to 6' even I haven't heard 6'1" either but no matter. He looks like a very smart wr to me with good quickness not speed, so I think he will get open enough for the small windows Cutler's arm will need. He will never be a #1 wr but he will be a consistent chain mover for us IMO which is something we have lacked. I do love big target wr's though so I'm with you on that, which is why I've been wanting Rideau to get a shot so bad. Another sleeper red zone target for us this year could be Kellen Davis. All we need is one of the bigger guys to give us an option outside of Olsen in the redzone.
Peoria- I like the Patton project for what it is. He was Chase Daniels back up during college and never played ala Cassel. He has the physical abilities though he's like 6'4-6'5" and about 225-240. I guess he has a very strong arm and decent mobility. Maybe good practice squad for a few years who knows. Haven't heard about Weatherford.
And I think Jeff is dead right. If there is a chance at getting Boldin it will take 2010 2nd and 2 players. Mark Anderson, Tommie Harris, Dusty, something like that. It's tough though because I think Arizona is going to more of a 3-4. I don't see it happening. It would undo the depth we just got most likely.April 27, 2009

They did take a wr within their 1st 2 picks. Iglesias was our second pick. Plus they added Knox to the mix in the 5th. I loved Johnson but they have a better feel for what they have or what they still can pick up then we do. It's still possible that we will add a S after the cuts. Arizona is simply appeasing Boldin and buying time before training camp and the season starts. He has 2 years left on his deal, so he really has no leverage. Their window will be closed in 2 years anyway with Warner retired and the weak armed Leinart taking over.
50 - I'm thinking the same thing, a huge weakness on our team is that secondary and I really see no reason teams will not continue to be pass happy against us. Bullocks is an adequate backup but not a starter in my opinion (JA only got this guy for one reason... he was CHEAP!) and Bowman has not played a down at FS. I think the only hope is that Bowman turns out to be a stud at that spot, but if he gets injured again or doesn't pan out... yikes.

Henry Melton used to be a Running Back. We line him up under center on 3rd or 4th and 1, or right up next to the goal line. Then instead of a QB sneak, its 6"4" - 270 lb Henry "the Mountain" Meltin easily picking up the 1 or 2 yards.
Okay, I know, the name needs a lot of work, but the idea is a good one. And you probably shouldn't use it more than once or twice a game.
Imagine if the defense lined up 10 in the box to defend it, and Mountain Meltin drops back and hits Greg Olsen for a quick pass. This idea just keeps getting better.

I'm certain the dude can block - he had plenty of goalline situations where he was either the ball carrier (mostly) or the lead blocker. This isn't like the Fridge - he's a bonafide ball carrier in a big time football program.

#61 nutjob said . . .I think I'd rather see the 300lber at FB than Melton. Louis has played tackle and tight end so he can block and catch, and that's all the FB should be doing, screw this FB sneak stuff. If Melton does well at DE which I hope he does, then I think we will need him there and not on O.
I would have to think in a west coast offense with a premier QB, you don't draft a 300lb TE with 4.7 speed who was backing up the OL last year to play TE on a team with Dez Clark and Greg Olsen, with any real intent of having him play TE.April 28, 2009

Cut his hand with a razor!! Something sound shady. Maybe he tried to jump out of a pool and missed!!

#63 BDG said . . .No way they move Melton to FB. He was drafted for DE and they will focus on him there. It certainly would be a wasted pick if they tried him at any other position at least for 2-3 years if he doesn't develop at DE. Now if they used him in small packages for a short yardage RB that would make sense given his background. But DE is where he'll focus.
I think they really want Louis for TE. They tried Kellen Davis as the blocking TE to replace Gilmore last year and he couldn't handle it. I just hope if they do keep Louis there they don't give up on Davis as a future replacement for Dez receiving. Bottom line is they most likely will keep Melton and Louis at the DE & TE respectively but if they both make the team their versatility can be endless in certain small packages.April 28, 2009
#64 Pretty and Pink said . . .I'm doubting Brigg's story too. It would be hard to cut yourself bad enough to need it heavily bandaged from a straight razor if you were only shaving with it. One of the many baby momma's probably tried to slice him and he grabbed the knife or something. haha. What ever the hell happened hope it just goes away and he can lift weights and prepare to play ball.

I doubt they drafted him for TE when we have 3 very good TEs right now

#69 IowaBear said . . .Hey Dave, any receiver will "die" without a quarterback to throw him the ball. Culter will allow our receivers play up to their potential and that makes you nervous, which makes you scared, which compels you read a Da Bears blog and comment on it with such negativity. It's sad that you referred to that Mushin Muhummad comment because it shows how desperate you are to bring Bears fan down. but you can't because we know how much better we are now. Ask any Packer fan if they would have rather had Kyle Orton over Favre because Favre threw a lot of picks.

#70 MattIsMyForte said . . .I honestly think that Louis was drafted for one purpose and one alone: to see if Kellen Davis is the real deal. If he outperforms Davis in camp and the offseason, he makes the 53 man roster as a TE. I just don't buy Louis being drafted as an OG considering the bodies Chicago already has at the position (Garza, Omiyale, Beekman, Buenning).
The real decision for Lovie comes if Davis takes notice and turns into the blocking TE the Bears need. If that happens, then Louis will spend the year on the practice squad...whether that's as a lineman or a TE, that's up to Lovie.

#71 Phil from SATX said . . .I'd like to see Davis develop as a blocker, he clearly came up short last year in that department. However, I would REALLY like to see him develop as a redzone/goal line threat. He is a beast of a man. The kid is huge and can get up. I'm reminded of that huge 1 handed grab he made in the endzone in preseason on that high toss from Caleb Hanie. Send him out there with Olsen in the red zone and pick your poison.
April 28, 2009
#72 Shady said . . .Am I wrong or was Davis in only a handful of offensive plays last year? That may be telling in itself, but I guarantee you that we have not seen enough of Davis to know whether he can develop into a blocking TE. On the other hand, he seems to resemble Greg Olsen in body type more than anyone else and we know what kind of blocker Greg is (n't).
I had read the Bears WERE looking at Louis as a TE, more than lineman. He may be the replacement for Gilmore they're looking for.
April 28, 2009
#73 big ten speed said . . .They're going to have to battle it out on special teams, and make the most of every opportunity they're given. Hoe long can we expect the Dez dispenser to stay healthy and productive? I hope G-reg takes the next step this year so that if Dez were to go down, we could depend on our TEs to step in and fill the role they've been drafted to play.
April 28, 2009
#74 David Haugh article said . . .shady - I can't imagine Olsen not winning the top TE spot, though he was the Bears' de facto #1 last season. The real concern, which you allude to, is that given that Turner's been calling for lots of 2TE sets, who steps in for Clark if he goes down? K. Davis has had a year to develop; let's hope he steps it up.

#75 Matt Stafford said . . ."I don't like that the Bears couldn't find a free safety to compete for a starting position out of the 256 players drafted in seven rounds. Maybe that speaks to how poor the crop of free safeties was or how disciplined the Bears were in making "value" picks. But the Bears entered the draft with free safety their second-biggest area of need and, nine picks later, it has become the biggest. And if Jerry Angelo is selling Craig Steltz as a legitimate contender at the position to compete with Josh Bullocks -- as he indicated Monday in an interview on WMVP-AM 1000 -- then I'm not buying."
"I don't like that the Bears spent a fourth-round draft pick on a pass rusher -- Henry Melton -- who had four times as many rushing touchdowns in his Texas career (16) as sacks (four). Melton's jaw-dropping workout numbers made him hard to ignore, but at the expense of solid free safety prospects such as Chris Clemons of Clemson or David Bruton of Notre Dame?"
AMEN!!!!!

#77 BDG said . . .Many people infected with the genital herpes virus experience outbreaks from time to time. These herpes outbreaks often appear as blisters or sores. The first herpes outbreak usually develops between 2 to 20 days after infection, although it sometimes takes longer (0-16 for Lion fans). Although it varies, symptoms associated with the first outbreak may last up to 3 weeks. To find out more about how to reduce your number of outbreaks, ask FresnoCA Bears fan.
However, there are many other people with genital herpes who have symptoms that they don’t recognize. It is important to know that in addition to blisters or sores, there are also many other symptoms that occur around the genital area because of genital herpes.
Examples of these include:
Itching
Redness
Pain while urinating
Bumps
Tingling
Cuts in the genital area
Vaginal discharge (common in Viking fans)
Some people confuse their symptoms with different conditions such as:
Vaginitis
Yeast infections
Jock itch
Urinary tract infections
Rash
Hemorrhoids
Folliculitis
Nearly 90% of people with genital herpes get a returning outbreak within the first year of infection. This may happen when something triggers the virus, which lays “sleeping” near the base of the spine. Many things may trigger an outbreak, including stress, rooting for the Packers, excessive sunlight, menstruation, vigorous sexual activity, or a worn-down immune system. Once the herpes virus is awake, it begins to multiply and symptoms can appear, usually at the site of the original infection. The blisters generally heal within 7 to 10 days. Some people have frequent outbreaks, while others have them rarely or never. On average, people with genital herpes get about 3 to 4 outbreaks per year.If you suspect you may have genital herpes, ask your healthcare provider to test you for the virus.

I don't understand Pegues not getting drafted. I've heard he is an average FS but he has the SEC all-time return yards record I believe. No one has signed him yet to my knowledge either. He probably is negotiating with multiple teams for the best deal and chance to make a team.April 29, 2009

Foote isnt a bad idea... I think Freeman could could actually develop into a good OLB though. Him, 54, 55 wouldnt be a bad bunch next year. I already like Freeman better than HH.
