Dear Mr. Angelo,

On behalf of Bears fans and Jerry bashers everywhere, I'm sorry about all of the terrible things we said. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart Thank You!

The Bears have a franchise quarterback. Say it out loud everyone. It will sound better than you ever believed.

Hell Yes!

I will not be surprised when Rex is offered a contract to come back, JP. If Hanie and Baenez are not what we think they are, then Rex will be back. He knows the offense, and Turner will not have to alter his game plan if something happens...

And yes cheers to Kyle Orton. A man that never bitched about how tough a deal being the Chicago Bears QB is. Risking injury to come back from a high ankle sprain after one week to gut it out and fight for us. We were watching him grow and develop and improve right before our eyes and I had no problem with him going to battle for us every Sunday. Don't know how high his ceiling is but I hope he has a great career in the AFC and am grateful. He helped get us a franchise QB. Thanks Kyle.

Ok found some words...

Awesome realization #1) I will never have to read/particiapte in a conversation over whether rex grossman or kyle orton is a more talented QB on this blog.... ever.

Awesome realization #2) For the first time in my adult life I actually feel like Da Bears front office has made a commitment to putting a winning team on the field.

Awesome ralization #3) Culter is 13-1 when denver gives up less than 21 pts per game.

Awesome realization #4) For the first time since 1985 we have pro bowl talent at QB and RB.

Awesome realization #5) We also have imporved our O-line (at least in the short term) signifigantly with pro bowl players at LT and C. Plus we have depth with Schaffer, Pace, and Williams at tackle.

Awesome realization #6) Earl bennett and Chirs williams played with cutler in college... this equals instant offensive cohesiveness.

Awesome realization #7) I dont have to see Jerry Angleo waste our 1st round picks in 2009 and 2010.

Awesome realization #8) We have the best QB in the NFC north for the first time since brett farve strapped on the puke and piss.

Awesome realization #9) We have a QB who can hit devin hester in-stride down the field. Plus he grew up a bears fan.

Awesome realization #10) We could compete for the super bowl this season!

Bear down!!!

It's awesome - just awesome news. Add a little depth at WR and we are a force to be reckoned with. Adding a Cutler automatically gives the Bears the ability to stretch the field with the speed of Hester, it will keep defenses honest, and Forte will have a Pro Bowl season next year - COUNT ON IT!

It might take some time to gel, but the O may finally be able to help keep the D off the field and fresh. Plus, you know we must've outbid Detroit and Minnesota in all this, making it even sweeter.

Boldin isn't going to happen. The best, most realistic options are Torry Holt and/or the Draft.

Cutler does not help the defensive secondary issues, but the Bears suddenly got the best quarterback in the NFC North. Coupled with one of the best running backs in the division and maybe a decent wide out or two down the road, we've got ourselves an offensive football team, ladies and germs.

Oh...and Orlando Pace was an amazing move as well. Omiyale could replace Garza. Then the line would be Shaffer, Beekman, Kreutz, Omiyale, and Pace.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Oh yeah, thanks to Josh McDaniels for being a huge dick, have fun turning Orton into the next Cassell.

#23 Kidron Music said . . .

Wow. Usually Chicago sports teams don't do what I want them to. Even when it is possible and logical. This is a rare and wonderful exception.

I second the toast to Kyle Orton. He was not the problem for us. He won us a few games, but wasn't a franchise QB. And he was a good guy. No complaining, lot's of heart, good teammate. And, before that ankle injury, he was pretty damn good last year.

But this is Jay Cutler. This is the QB I drafted for ALL of my fantasy teams last year. This is a 25 year old QB who just made the pro bowl. This is a guy that can hit Hester in stride, stretch the field for Forte, turn Greg Olsen into one of the league top TE's.... this is the only QB in the league that can make Earl Bennett relevant!

This is good. And, dare I say, our offensive line isn't so bad anymore. If Pace stays somewhat healthy, we should be fine there. Plus, Chris Williams and Jay Cutler have danced before.

I'm happy shocked!

April 2, 2009

#24 Duff Diggler said . . .

I love all this negative talk about "who's he gonna throw to?" Devin is the obvious answer. You are retarded to think they wont draft a WR with that 2nd rounder. Oh, btw....

Has everyone forgot about GREG OLSEN!?!?! How much better does this trade make him!?!?

Plus imagine the running room Forte is going to have!!!!

OL is stable...

....time for the D to step up.

How about best QB in the entire NFC!!

IF Orlando Pace can play good football for one more year we will have a top 10 offensive line, we have a top 5 RB, we have the best TE duo in the NFL. WOW this year could be exciting.

We sign Holt and the Super Bowl is ours FOR SURE. We can draft a FS in the 2nd round and a DE in the 3rd.

Dude, do you know anything about football? IT ALL STARTS AT QB. So what if we give up our first round pick, who were we going to get? another bust at WR? We have a solid O-line, a pro bowl QB, and a Pro Bowl running back. If we can get a #1 WR in FA then we will have a team that can go a long way in the playoffs. Well that and some DBs. WTF are you thinking stink?

This is the first time since 2006 that Ive had such high hopes for the Bears going into a season. This move was for every Bears fan that had to watch Rexy, Jim Miller, Shane Matthews, Craig Krenzel, and Cade McNown give a sub par performance in their career.

Kyle Orton was a trooper, he wins us 10+ games in his rookie year and the Bears bench him, does he get upset? no. He works his ass off to get the starting job last year. He played through a pretty bad injury that should have kept him out, but he did it because he knew that his team needed him. Now KO is going to Denver where I wish him the best of luck and hope he has a great career.

If the Chicago Bears have ever made a bigger deal in their history, it has to go back to the signing of RED GRANGE! So ,Mark Schlereth doesn't like the deal? Awwww. Couldn't be because Cutler thumbed his nose at Markie's beloved Broncos. Beware the 4-LETTER Network, fellow Bear Bloggers. Those are the same people whose lips are STILL CHAPPED from kissing Brett Favre's behind. The same people who brought you John Clayton saying that Favre was most likely to wind up in Minnesota (like the Packers would ever let THAT happen) AND chuckled that "Brett Favre would rather RETIRE than play for the Jets" less than 24 hours before Favre signed with the Jets. The same people who, allegedly, SUSPENDED Mike Tirico not once, but TWICE for sexual harrassment and still promoted him to the Monday Night Football broadcasts. The same people that for years foisted unrepentant druggie, TV and radio challenged, Michael Irvin on us as an analyst. The people who bring you televised poker as a "sport". To say that ESPN is full of itself is an understatement. Other than that, I have no opinion on this matter.

April 3, 2009

Is 2 #1s too pricey? Think of it this way. It's two fewer chances to draft the next Cedric Benson, Curtis Enis, Rashaan Salaam, Stan Thomas, Alonzo Spellman, Lionel Antoine, Waymond Bryant, etc., etc., etc.

Wow, I am just floored. Will probably be somewhat intoxicated in a couple of hours, I've been a Bears fan since 1968 and FINALLY the Bears have gotten a primo QB. To boot, he's playing for the team he rooted for as a kid and he's playing with two of his college teammates (Hillenmeyer also went to Vanderbilt but he's much older.)

My hat's off to Angelo, he got it done. I've not been one of his big fans but he pulled the trigger on the most crucial deal in recent Bears history.

April 3, 2009

#54 reverenddave said . . .

to #49 whens the last time a relationship with a neurotic cheerleader went the distance? It always just devolves into a rollercoaster of terrible fights over stupid crap.

The girl next door, while admittedly less flashy, is the one who will still be getting your rocks off ten years later.

I really dont like this deal. I think we significantly overpaid for something we didnt absolutely need.

This man does not make rashied's hands any better he doesnt help earl learn turner's playbook any faster, he doesnt make rideau any less of a preseason only phenom. And far as i can tell there isnt a single other player on the current roster to even line up opposite hester and draw coverage from our still not proven #1 reciever.

He also doesnt magically provide us with a decent free safety or young linemen in fact he actively takes those away from us with the staggering 2 firsts and a third.

And yes if you want to, say hes the reason Pace signed. Fine. i am happy with Pace but its still one old injury prone tackle backed up by three tackles with a combined start of 1. That doesnt automatically make us a great line. I hate the idea of starting him at left and moving williams to right.

Sure i very well could be wrong. But I think this is way more of a high risk high reward move than people seem to think. Who took some snaps for the AFC last year in the pro bowl? Derek Anderson.

That thought should be sobering enough for all of us.

reverenddave,

I'm with you!

I have to agree that this is a huge risk. It's nice to have a potential Pro-Bowl QB but let's not forget it cost the Bears TWO FIRST ROUND draft picks. Jay Cutler led his team to 8-8 last year. 7-9 a year in 2007. He's hardly had the success to get this excited. I am going to take a wait and see approach.

April 3, 2009

#58 Babootycall said . . .

Hey davey downer....are you out of your mind??

We overpaid??? Are u a lunatic? You want to give more first round money to the likes of Benson, Haynes, Colombo, Williams. Just by virtue of getting rid of our first round pick (and the salary cap allotment to it) we have improved. And then secondly we won't make our half assed receivers better? Do u not think if the qb puts the ball right on the money as opposed to in the vincity that our WRs won't be able to catch em better? Cmon now Davey Downer. Pop some Xanax and get out of your funk. Its a win win situation any way you look at it. if cutler fucks up at least jerry cant anymore with two first round picks and many $$$$$.

#59 Shady said . . .

When I first heard the news, I thought the guy was playing some sort of post April fools joke or something, but when I fond out it was true I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it.

This move impacts the entire organization from top to bottom, from it's inception till the end of time. To put this in perspective for you, Jay Cutler has 8 300+ yard games. The Bears ALL-TIME? 4! This changes everything you thought you knew about the Chicago Bears.

Who is going to benefit most from this move?

On another note, I've been listening to some interviews by Urlacher and company and they don't seem to share in the enthusiasm. There almost seems to be a hint of negative energy coming from the Chicago defense about this move... Maybe it's about losing a leader like Kyle Orton. Or perhaps a feeling of pressure because their organization is indicating they believe the window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl is closing. Now or never. The defense has to be feeling the heat from the organization now that Angelo has made his point about the QB position on his team.

JA doesn't go down lookin' like a fool.

He's IN IT to WIN IT!

Angelo is not going to stand in the batters box with the bat on his shoulder, he's the kind of guy to take a chance to make something great happen. If he strikes out then so be it, but at least he wouldn't be called out looking. No matter what happens in the future, good or bad, I won't blame JA for taking a chance to be great.

Willie don't worry what those tools say on the 4 Letter Network. If they were so smart they would be coaches or GM's. The teams don't want their "expertise" so why should we? They have their own biases and rarely seem to be right. How many of them even picked us to go 9-7 last year? I hope everyone talks shit because it is so much sweeter to make them eat it later.

Out of the #18 pick let's say this year and next if we would have finished the same this year without Cutler and our 3rd, how much do you think we would have improved? Do you really think JA would have nailed all those picks or would at least one have not worked out and another not contributed right away?

I'm not saying that it isn't a lot. It is. But to have maybe filled the hardest position in Pro Sports to fill with a very likely franchise/ Pro Bowl QB for the next 4?, 6?, 8+ years is a risk worth taking.

April 3, 2009

#70 Max said . . .

I am with the Rev on this one 100%.

Jay Cutler just made our QB position better. Fine.

Hester is not a No. 1 receiver.

Rashied Davis dropped passes thrown to him, it doesn't matter who is throwing them.

Earl Bennett has great chemistry with Cutler, but Bennett couldn't get on the field last year when we needed him.

Rideau hasn't made it on the field for any offensive play... EVER.

And that ends our receivers list. Yes we have Olsen and Clark, but you start putting in two tight ends, you will be facing alot more eight-in-the-box and then your rushing game is negatively affected.

We also over paid for him. 2 FIRST ROUND PICKS!? Oh we are going to draft a receiver in the second round to help? Lets see, how has that worked for us in the recent past with Bennett and Bradley.

Hester is going to be facing the number one cornerback on every team. Hester could be a good receiver, but he needs help. Olsen is a tight end. I know we split him out wide sometimes, but at the end of the day he is a tight end and is better at that position.

And how is Cutler feeling about this? Him and Bennett and Williams were all teammates... but he just went from an offense with a great pass blocking line, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler to an offense with an old line, Devin Hester, Rashied Davis and Greg Olsen.

No offense, but it doesnt compare.

And lets say that the Bears finish 9-7 again this year. The Chicago media is going to be all over him, and he has shown this past off season how he deals with difficult situations: He cries about it.

I hope this works out... but I am not putting money on it.

What in his tenure as GM makes you think JA picking #18 twice and a 3rd rounder would have dramatically improved this team for years to come?

April 3, 2009

#75 Max said . . .

It doesn't Z, your right. It could it just mean he made one stupid move before he got the chance to make two stupid moves.

But then Olsen has looked decent and Tommie Harris has had his moments so while I am never confident in an Angelo pick, at least there is hope and youth. And shoot, trade a first and a third to Zona and get a proven receiver who makes EVERYONE else better, including the quarterback. This move does not do that.

The Chiefs traded a second round pick for Matt Cassel AND Mike Vrabel. We overpaid for Cutler when there were more pressing needs at other positions.

April 3, 2009

#76 Urlacher FTW said . . .

I think both organizations will end up better off.
The third round pick.. We still get a third round pick and they gave us their fifth so we only completely lose one pick this year.

So really it is all about the 2 first rounders and with JA picking, I think I take Cutler. Ron Turner better update his resume because if JC doesn't throw 22 or more TDs and 3000 yards people are gonna want heads to roll.

I was hesitant about this trade at first also but I have to say that I am very excited about 2009 now, it's surreal almost, I want the season to start this Sunday. I do still think KO can be a good QB and wish him well in Denver, he should be able to get them through the development of the next guy at the very least.

Wow, I love all this negativity.

To all the haters who would you have picked at 18? Honestly let us know. And don't come with the Darrius Heyward-Bust argument.

ESPN analysts suck ass. Mark Schrelteh (or however you spell that idiot's name) pissed on himself in games because he didn't want to go to the locker room, what a lazy piece of trashy shit. That's honestly disgusting and akin to a 4 year old who pisses the bed.

Watch Rich Eisen on NFL network, not ESPN idiots.

To all the Cutler haters and Orton lovers. Get off this blog and go root for Orton in Denver as a backup to Sanchez.

And don't say we gave away everything, we still have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 5th, 6th, and a couple 7ths.

Yes - HUGE props to JA for strapping it on. And a thanks to Orton, who I thought was going to be Da Man, barring injuries. The answer at WR is not Holt but a young unrecognized talent. Who is that talent? That's JA's job!

I don't see why I am not allowed to be angry over this move. I don't like it because I think we coulda used the help elsewhere. Why does that make me less of a Bears fan?

The 18th pick, I wanted a lineman. Although I was more pushing for to trade it for Boldin. Our O-line and receivers are more of a need than the QB position was, IMO.

(Orlando Pace is a nice addition and all but he isn't exactly a spring chicken.)

I agree it was a lot to spend. If we would have kept Orton and gotten Boldin for a 1st and a 3rd I would have loved that too. There is no disputing that we need 2 starting WR's. Cutler can't catch the ball too.

But seriously if our Offense explodes and we go deep in the playoffs and people think we will be doing that regularly for the next several years, WR's and players are going to want to come here to play with Cutler and Da Bears. Look at how many veterans the Pats get cheap just because they want that shot at the ring. That's what I want players to think of the Bears. This was a big step in that direction IMO.

I understand your call for Boldin but I was thinkin Boldin has had a big head all last year. He wanted Fitzgerald money when he isnt as good as him. How do you think he would act if Turner didn't throw him the ball everytime. I vaguely remember Boldin getting into a fight with his offensive co. on the sidelines during the nfc title game. He would rip the coaching staff apart for anything. I know you're a die hard Bears fan but this was a move that finally brought us a QB.

It is a site to debate and question and guess and compare and throw any and all random ideas, thoughts, questions and concerns about our beloved team around and see what the bets answers might be.

Some of our best stuff comes from challenging eachother's perception of what is going on with Da Bears. Jeff always encourages the dissenting views to stay and be vocal. Without that it would get pretty boring around here.

Shit I agree with Phil like 90%+ of the time but I love when he disagrees because I respect his opinion and it makes me look closer at what I said to see if I am missing or underestimating some aspect of my argument. There used to be f'ing wars on here. Classic, hilarious battles that were funnier than anything on TV. Seriously. So keep bringing it.

T.C. I will bitch slap your ass so hard when i get back to the contiguous 48...

Boldin does have a big head, but you make the trade for him and he plays his ass off because his next contract would be depending on his numbers that year, and while he may have screamed at Haley on the sideline, I actually think someone should yell at Ron Turner during games over some of the stupid plays he calls. Might snap him back to reality.

I realize this move brought us a QB, but I think the price was to high for a position that wasn't a really necessity in my mind (like receiver/o-line/safety).

The only positive thing out of all of this is that I feel like Jeff's blood pressure will have gotten drastically lower since this deal got done.

Yeah... Dave Downer. You might want to check on the career stats of Mr. Schaffer. He' s played a lot of football.

So much to say. Love the O. Pace signing. Went to his high school. Class act, still a solid pass-blocker and a proven, skilled veteran, injury issues asside.

So... for everyone hating. I'm sorry? franchise QB. Say it with me now. Franchise QB. I'm only 28, and I was considerably more of a nutcase than Cutler at 25. Sure, Cutler loses his temper. He'll probably yell once or twice when Kyle would have just gone back to the huddle. But Christ almighty, isn't this offense's problem a lack of attitude? (if not creativity, RT) We came into this week with a variety of needs. QB is now specifically NOT one of them. QB is the hardest position to be successfull at in all of professional sports, and we have one of the league's top 10. We can find a wideout or two. Bennet BROKE SEC records along w/Cutler, so I'm thinking there is some basic chemistry there. He' your hands, Hester is your speed, and then you've got Olsen, Clark, and please don't forget Forte (he catches passes too), plus whoever they pick up in the draft/FAgency. And really? Cutler to Hester, and they're going to put 8 in the box? Doubt it.

Is Cutler the best QB in the league? No. Is he the most mature? No. But you know what? He's not Alex Smith or Matt Leinert or Joey Harrington or Cade McKnown, or the 20-odd slapdicks the Bears have started in the last 30 years other than McMahon and Kramer (and Orton, why not), or even Chris Simms either. No one has EVER called him a "bust." Not that I've ever heard. It's a risk. We've given up a lot to get him. But even if we take Stafford this year, we couldn't hope for a SB appearance, not w/a rookie QB. Jerry Angelo and drafted QBs are like oil and water, typically. I applaud his move to snatch up this once in a career oppurtunity. Or would someone like to pipe up and say they'd rather have fucking Rex Grossman under center?

This could all turn out terribly. Chemistry could be bad. He and Patrick Mannely could come to blows. But it's a move. It's a move to make an improvement at a position, the most important position in football, that the Bears have truly been lacking in since, yeah, I'll say it, Sid Luckman. April 1st needs: Franchise QB, Free safety, #1/2 wideout, pass rusher, CB, swing tackle. That list doesn't seem quite as daunting to me w/o "franchise QB" on it, or am I wrong?

I love me some Kyle; Urlacher's comments about him today rang true to me. I never doubted his work ethic, his effort, or his ability to win games... sometimes. But it's not like Kyle was really that much of a leader on the team. So attacking Cutler's leadership skills is kind of unneccesary. They'll have Kreutz and Pace (and please, please, please Holt) to provide leadership. We're undeniably a better team than we were yesterday, and I won't hear otherwise. This and the Schaffer signing have convinced me that the Bears want to win it all this year. Get it done for Chicago, fellas. For all of the close games we played last year, make one field goal a game a touchdown, and we would've won 3 more games. Ha. And now the Denver post is trying to spin it their way. I hate the goddamn Donkeys, always have, always will, and I hope we kill them in the preseason.

Bears Damnit.

I don't understand you Bears fans. All we bitch and moan about, day and night, is the quarterback. Finally, after nearly sixty years of draught, we have (potentially) a franchise quarterback begat by, hands down, the greatest trade in Chicago Bears history (granted, that's not saying a whole lot).

No, Cutler doesn't answer the problems in the defense. No, Cutler doesn't fix the hole in the recieving corps. No, Cutler's presence won't mean better Ron Turner play-calling. No, Cutler won't fix the economy and end world hunger. No, Cutler won't solve the trouble in the Middle East.

BUT, Cutler is a potential franchise quarterback. What does that mean for us? It means that we have a guy who we should expect to start year after year for the rest of his career (a nearly insurmountable feat in Chicago). It means that Chicago gets media attention now, which, trust me, will increase the spirit around Halas Hall. It means that star wide recievers will not see Cook County as football fly-over country. It means that Ron Turner and Lovie Smith ARE put on notice, because if Cutler's yardage and rating suffer, then it becomes evident that the structure of the team is flawed, and heads will roll in Lake Forest.

THIS, my friends, is change you CAN believe in.

Cutler's mere presence alters the dynamic spirit of this organization...at least right now. This may change during the regular season, but right now, Chicago loves Jay Cutler. No matter what you nay-sayers opine on the matter.

Just sit back and enjoy having a quarterback for a change. I've been a Bears fan for nearly seven decades and this is the most secure I ever remember feeling at the position.

Jerry Angelo mortgaged everything on this. Even if Cutler plays like he has been for the next ten years, how many of those years will the Bears be a good team. In two years we will likely be looking for a C, RG, LT or RT which depends on if Williams even pans out, TE(Clark replacement), WR because we still don't have one, DT, DE, MLB, OLB, CB, FS, SS.

Kyle, good on ya!! You were the best QB the Bears had seen in awhile and a good teammate, but with a bad neckbeard and questionable leadership skills. The Bears are getting a Favre-type franchise QB and did a great job going about it. Even more so, the Lions and Vifags are not getting him!! Good job, Jerry...now go out and find a #1 receiver. I don't think people are being overly negative, realistic maybe. I am excited and I think it was a good move in the end. There are positives and negatives with any move.

However we still have no receivers and RT calling the plays. Cutler doesn't automatically pick up a yard when we run the FB dive, he doesn't make the throw to a TE standing behind the center look any prettier, and he can't force Davis and Hester to catch the ball when it hits their hands. Hester may be excited for having Cutler atm but we'll see how golden the relationship is the first time Hester screws up his route or drops a TD... but maybe that's what he needs is an ass chewin.

My only real big concerns are this guy got his feelings hurt pretty easy in Denver and threw a pretty big fit about it. Now he comes to a city where expectations are through the roof, he has a new playbook and no season to sit behind a starter to learn it, and we are harder on QBs than just about any other city. I am just concerned that he'll get so upset here from the pressure and lack of receivers and OC, he'll pull the same crap and demand trading again or walk away when his contract is up. If this only buys us a top 10 QB for 3-4 years, it wasn't worth it, if it sets us for 10+ years then fine, could have thrown in the 2011 #1.

Those are all realistic concerns, not pessimism, realism.

JAB, not question this trade? Your list is a reason to question it. Develop a guy for three years and then dis him for an arm and a head case? Our needs were not QB, they were WR, OL, DL, and secondary. This trade does nothing to shore up those needs. I'm with The Rev on this, sounds good now but may prove to suck later. Question, does anyone think he will throw for 4,000 next year in Chicago? My point exactly, why?

Sounds like Hester and how many games can you win with 3 Tds? Also how does it matter when he played? They don't factor playoff spots by when your players are able to play. He did blow up NE and had one maybe two other good games in the season.
Take away his two big games and he had rokkie TE numbers.

#128 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Wayne - no he won't throw for 4,000 yards but that doesn't mean anything. He won't get over 600 passing attempts in our Offense would be reason number one.

He does make our running game better though. If Hester and him can develop any kind of chemistry and timing, a team would be nuts to stack the box. He makes playaction a huge weapon. I just hope the chemistry is there, cuz if not he may lock himself in his lambo and refuse to come out and play. :)

How the hell do you think they could beat a team like the Giants or the Steelers?
118-You do what the good teams do and get good players in the draft. In the first three rounds they should have been able to get 4starters and 2 backups. That's why the Cardinals went to the Superbowl. If JA can't do it he needs to go. It's rediculous to say that if they had a bad draft then they should just trade away their picks.

2- Jay Cutler has only proven that he's a gunslinger... That's all. His mistakes are very reminiscent of one REX GROSSMAN.
3- His attitude is the equivalent of TO, I know that McDaniels is an idiot for what he did but Cutler wasn't to much better about the situation... If this was TO or Chad Johnson people would be freaking out about the way it was handled. By the way this isn't his first sign of being a chump.
4- I'm a Cowboys fan... We had a Pro Bowl QB/RB/WR and just about every other position on the planet and look where it got us, oh and our D was better than yours last year.

For all the over the top excited, this is the greatest thing since sliced bread people , I have 2 questions; I'm not saying he will or won't perform up to expectations. Simply 2 questions:

1.) How long does he have to preform?

If he struggles this entire year do you write it off as bad WRs, bad OC, first year here..

2.) Do you feel differently if KO outpreforms him in '09?

What if.. I mean just throw all history away and answer that, if KO is the better 09 QB both starting with new playbooks.. what does that mean?

Just asking. :)

I have full respect for all who don't like this, but I'm not sweating losing picks. We pay a lot for them, and they only pan out a small percentage of the time. I wish we didn't have to give up the third rounder. Our big issue becomes the Oline. If we can give Cutler time to throw the ball, this team will be vastly improved. We still lack one receiver, who could potentially be Bennet if he has grown and his relationship with Cutler can speed up his learning process. We have one of the top five receiving RBs in football, and GO has the potential to be a top receiving TE. Add the home run threat in Hester (who I still view as the replacement #2 for BB) and we need a number one. I'd like to see us get a stopgap for that spot but I am tired of hearing everyone say that he has no one around him. My chief worry is that we will be putting an Oline out there that is somewhat pieced together and will need some time to gel. But there is huge potential here. HUGE. I totally respect those who disagree, especially those who have been here a long time. I just feel like we have been an organization without balls and we just grew a pair. I'd rather take this shot and see if we can get what we have NEVER had. A franchise QB. We're the second oldest franchise in history and the best we can claim is Luckman (totally different era) and JM. I like the risk.

Vizzinni what do you think the odds are that JA would get 4 starters and 2 back ups out of this years and next years first 3 rounds of the draft? Seriously.

Here is every Bears draft since 1936. When did Angelo have full control of the draft? Please tell me what two 1st rd picks and a 3rd you would not be willing to trade for Jay Cutler. If I cherry pick from all of his drafts ever combined I can come up with one. And with 2nd rd picks like Dan Bazuin, Mark Bradley, Tank Johnson and Daniel Manning (very good kickoff returner), I'm not really sweating a 2nd rounder too much either.

A Holt and Hester combo at WR and Jay throwing...and Forte also a great target

That would just add to the dreamlike state most of us swimming in right now.

Oh and for the record Denver's Oline sucked last year the Jay still managed to have a Pro-bowl performance.

April 3, 2009

#140 Z said . . .

Not sure how much of this was O-lines. My source is a blog so no idea if this is accurate.

Cutler was sacked only 11 times and had 616 pass attempts last season (1.8% of the time). Orton was sacked 27 times with only 465 attempts (5.5% of the time).

Urlacher I say for what we traded if we don't make the playoffs I am very disappointed. Between our ST and stretching the D now and opening things for Forte and resting our D, we should improve in all of those areas. Most of us thought that we only needed a competent game manger to be successful. Now we have more than that and with even less required of the other areas, the time for excuses is over. We need WR, WR and keep trying to improve the secondary, O-line and pass rush in that order IMO and we should be dominant. Or else.

Urlacher,

If Jay Cutler is still ON THIS TEAM in 2010 then that is a great accomplishment. You need to simmer down, pal. I understand not getting excited before this guy has even taken a snap, but are you not at least a little interested in the possibilities?

You ask how long does he have to perform? Years. Three, maybe four. Now if he's not getting his shit together by 2010, then we have to realize something is up...but let's give him that chance. And, let's NOT compare Jay Cutler to Rex Grossman.

Rex Grossman is done and in the past. Over. Fin.

You ask if we should feel differently if Kyle outperforms Jay in 2009? No. If Kyle outperforms Jay in 2009 and 2010, then there is something up. After Ron Turner is fired for limiting Cutler's gunslinger ability, then we'll see if Cutler performs better.

The truth is...Kyle Orton will not outperform Jay Cutler in the long run. Do you think he's going to show up at Mile High and suddenly post a 87 QB Rating? Do you think Jay will arrive at soldier field and falter to a 71 QB Rating (incidentally, Orton's career rating)?

I don't mean to be calling you out, Urlacher. On the contrary, I agree with you more often than not. But I think the attitude taken by 'your side of the isle' is ignorant. No, we should not think TOO highly of Cutler right now. But we should also not think too low of him, as many already do.

This blog is a great thing. It REALLY is. But there is a serious lack of people with sports management experience, which I think, would greatly impact the opinions of those who write on this wall. Also, a serious lack of 4th dimensional thinking...planning beyond 2009, I mean. Mr. Angelo made a business decision, and with every big decision comes a bit of risk. If Cutler leads the Bears back to a Super Bowl contender, then two first rounds, a third, and a career backup quarterback will be viewed as a SMALL PRICE.

If Cutler does not pan out...then I will probably unsubscribe to this blog, because bitching and moaning will have reached unprecidented levels. Haha.

Z JA took over the draft in 2004. I know that realistically he wouldn't have gotten that. Now he has even less picks in worse positions, so imagine what he'll pick now. It makes me a little crazy that everyone says that we should trade away all the picks because he will waste them anyways. If that's the case get him out and get someone in here that can.

I just feel like they just Madoff actioned the team. This is all the eggs in one basket.

My basic problem is in the mentality behind this. I always was more of a fan of the slowly build your team up with talent which leads to a longer sustainability. The way Angelo seems to play things out are gather a few players taking risks and then move in with FA (2005) to fill the needs. This very well could be the greatest thing to ever happen to this team. I'm just hoping the pendulum doesn't swing back in the next season or two.

After all is said and done, I'm a fan of the trade. If you had told me before, though, that the cost would have been Orton, #18 this year and first rd. in 2010, plus the 3rd/5th switch this year, I would have thought that was too much.

The question is, what would we have likely gotten with those two first round picks? I think the three main areas of need are: WR, S, and DE. DE will be more of a need next year than this one, but since we don't have the 1rder in 2010, it's on the list.

I actually think for the next two years, we should be pretty set at O-Line. We got a lot younger by simply losing St. Clair and Tait, and even though Pace likely only has few years left, that's enough to get us past the pick losses from the Cutler trade. Assuming a line of Pace, Garza, Kreutz, Beekman, Schaffer, we have Williams/Omiyale/Buenning as back ups, and if Pace Garza and Kreutz are gone in two years, we still end up with Williams, Omiyale, Beekman, Buenning, Schaffer--not great, but not a bad start.

With the #18, I don't think we could have gotten a premium WR this year, so at best we would have gotten a project. We can still get somebody like that in later rounds. So, not much of a loss there. Also, with Orton as our QB, I think we might have ended up in the same relative draft position next year which wouldn't have been good enough to get a Calvin Johnson type instant starter anyway, which is what we need. So, I don't think this position is hurt over the next two years by the trade.

As to safety, we could have picked up someone first round, but we would have drafted above slot to do so--again, we can deal with that in 2nd/3rd this year. We might have been able to get a quality safety in 2010 (i.e. Mays) with the first round pick, so there is some loss down the road. But we need a safety now, and we might be able to get someone pretty good this year, so not sure if this is much of a loss.

If we try to meet the DE need in later rounds either this year or next, however, I think we won't get the same caliber player. Our defense requires a serious pass rush, as evidenced by the problems stemming from our inability to generate one last year. And really good pass rushers go fast. I therefore think that the Cutler trade hurts us at DE.

Although I think the trade was worth it, I think the real cost is going to be a weaker pass rush in years to come.

Vizzini, you're insane if you think the Bears need ever single position other than QB, RB, and LG.

Last I checked, the DLine is good and will be getting better with Rod Marinelli at the head.

A potentially fading, but still potent star at MLB.

Lance Briggs and either the competent Hillenmyer or competent Nick Roach on the outside.

The greatest weak spot is the Secondary. But you make it seem as though we have no hope. No hope. Nothing to live for. End it now!

Lets not be so sure the Rex bashing will stop. There is a bit of a consensus around town here, that Bears may re sign him as backup. He knows the system and can back up in case of injury. There would be no pressure of trying to win job or of friction between him and Orton, could we possibly have NOT seen the last of Rex?

April 3, 2009

#153 Pd said . . .

I'm all for signing rex as a backup. He is probably one of the more solid back-up's in the league. He knows the system. I wouldn't want to hand the keys to the franchise to him, but I like his experience and talent better than Hanie... who has only looked good in preseason. Grossman has played in some HUGE games and won... whether or not it was pretty. Plus i think he has guts. Not a ton of people (cutler included) could take all the bullshit this kid did.

April 3, 2009

#154 Pd said . . .

I say sign Holt, then use the 2nd rounder on either OL or S. See if a WR falls to the 3rd/4th round that we can work with.

Usually WR's in the 1st round (barring say top 10 picks) have a hard time getting on the field and making an impact in their first year(s). So I don't think we can realistically solve that hole on offense this draft.

I think Hester, Bennet, Holt, Davis... plus GO, Dez, and Matty F should be enough to compete in the NFC. We aren't going to become an Arizona-like overnight. Hopefully Cutler will make our current WR-corps look much better. Who know's, maybe Bennet & Cutler reunited will be something special?

If we get a solid starting S and our o-line can return to form... we instantly have a hugely improved D.

Very interesting commentary today - I'm kind of shocked at the negativity, just because I didn't expect it.

Jerry traded maybe's for a sure thing. This kid Cutler addresses all of the issues we had with Orton (even while liking him a lot), and takes nothing away from him except for the hugely overstated issue of him being a crybaby when Josh started playing footsies with Cassell.

Couple of interesting comments I heard on the radio. From Mike Greenberg, a guy I respect a whole bunch - and a former Chicago guy - at the beginning of last season he had the first Bronco game of the year, and because he had lots of time to prepare for the first game, studied lots of film on Cutler from 2007 - and he fell in love. Said Cutler has an unbelievable ability to improvise and throw on a dead run, across the field, like only a couple of guys can do in the NFL. He's very high on him.

Jurko from Chicago was on Mike and Mike (check out how the Bears are suddenly RELEVANT to the nation) - he said that there were agent reasons likely involved in Cutler's hissy fit - that said agent already knew what it was like to have a change in regime and not have the new guys solidly behind the QB - not a good situation - and sure enough that's what happened. We just got lucky it did.

Also, forget the talk about Cutler's dad - Cutler WANTED to be a Bear, he's apparently ecstatic about it, Indiana Bear fan growing up - so he's totally on board. Does he like RT? Probably not, but who does? He'll just be a constant reminder to RT about yet another bad decision (yanking Cutler's scholarship) on a long list of them.

I really don't understand all the crying about our continuing OT needs and how the loss of draft picks hurts us bad there - uh, people, have you been paying attention to the ENTIRELY NEW LINE that is here already? Garza has already lost his job, and quit assuming that you already know Williams is a bust. Williams, Omi, Shaffer, Pace, Bruening from last year, Beekman if he still has a role - I mean, COME ON!!!! We asked for Jerry to rebuild the line AND HE DID IT!!! Just not with a draft pick, which is more than fine!

We certainly do have a #1 receiver need - no doubt about that - but you have to automatically assume Bennett's probable success has just been majorly upgraded. I'm sure Jerry's looking looking right now. He's certainly proven that all bets are off as far as how we THOUGHT he would act. Maybe this year he'll package picks and move UP for a higher second round pick or something. I just put n0thing past Jerry right now.

My son and I had the best time last night - and I'm very happy he was the one to call me at work and tell me the news - and at first I was in stone cold shock, and not sure how to take the news, especially when I heard the cost. The more I thought about it, the more I was...

YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! Then last night, we're both spontaneously breaking out with "I can't believe we got Jay Cutler!" and high fiving. Friends and relatives calling, people emailing today -

FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK!!! What we always wanted!!! A guy who can throw the long ball as good as anyone!!! (what we had with Rex but that's all we had) A guy who can throw on the run!!!! (never had that, really)

IT'S TIME TO RETURN TO DOMINATION IN THE NFL CENTRAL!!!!

THE OTHER TEAMS ARE QUAKING IN THEIR CLEATS!!!!

BEAR DOWN, BEAR FANS!!!!

#150-I am spelling out the obvious. If someone says something that I disagree with I have the right to disagree. If you don't like that then don't read what I write.

Let me break it down for you.
FB-Should be obvious that they need one.
TE-Olsen is good but Clark is 31 and falling fast. This is important because Olsen can't block.
WR-Can anyone say they don't need one really?
RG-Garza?
RT or LT- Even if Williams works out thet are gambling with Pace being healthy.
C-Kreutz has been on the decline and needs to be replaced.
DT-Run stopper or pass rusher, we had neither last year. If Harris doesn't step up this season the team needs to move on.
DE-Ogunleye is in his last season, do you want him back? Andersons one sack last season doesn't inspire confidence either.
LB-I think Urlacher was a victim of the coaching but he is getting long in the tooth.
Hillemeyer is a liability on defense. He was a nice grab back in the day, but with TE's running 4.5's he is two steps behind.
CB-Both CB have had enough injuries along with getting older that in a few years they will need to look at replacements.
FS and SS-Payne and Steltz?

I'm not saying he did step up and play well but did you seriously say competent Nick Roach?

Just because you are in love with this situation doesn't mean I have to be. I said it could pan out, but I'm just going over some of the problems that they are going to face. Sorry if it hurts your feelings.

"He was a rookie who didn't start until the 4th game, was on a team with a horrible o-line (except Pace when healthy), had an inconsistent QB and he came on the second half of the season, so yes he stood out."
- sounded like Hester, so you implied Orton was inconsistent, do I have to spell it out.

And first of all you came at me by nitpicking that I was "crazy" for thinking that Robiskie or Britt could go to 49. A very reasonably spot for both considering there are 5 WRs ahead of both of them.
You didn't even know who Donnie Avery was till I brought him up and you googled his stats and pretended you knew something about him.

Why would I want to talk football with someone who knows nothing about it, you are looking at our needs 2 years from now and putting every position down, except the ones you forgot.

April 4, 2009

#165 Vizzini said . . .

I looked up Avery's stats so there would be stats to base the arguement on. Instead of what looks to be your approach, which is more an off the hip commenting.

The Giants and Rams both need a tall WR to complement the players they all ready have. So it doesn't necessarily matter how many players are on the board ahead of them.

I look down the road because that is how you stay out of trouble with needs. Why waite until someone retires(Tait) or contract expires(St. Clair) to have players in place. Then maybe you can avoid relying on the health of two histoorically unhealthy players to protect your new big investment QB. I know, what a dumb idea huh?
