Now...Holt

Saturday, April 4, 2009 | Jeff

I've long believed that Peter King is lost. He's one of those national football writers who thinks we're supposed to foam at the mouth because he knows how to text message and has Brett Favre's phone number. Here's how be begins his sub-moronic, Pat Bowlen lovefest on SI.com: "Jay Cutler has three people to blame for his trade from the most talented young offensive team in football to one of the least..." Needless to say, all three of those people are Jay Cutler.

Denver is the most talented young offensive team in football? Let's see how Mr. Marshall and Mr. Royal produce with Kyle Orton throwing the ball. Chicago is one of the least? Matt Forte. Devin Hester. Greg Olsen. Now Jay Cutler. Name another team in football with four players that talented under the age of twenty-seven. King discounts Cutler's effect on the Broncos offense while underestimating his potential impact in Chicago.

He would have been better served to make the logical point: the Bears lack the receiving corps depth of the Broncos. And that should be their only concern right now. There are no substantial defensive players available. No more offensive linemen. There are receivers and - most notably - Torry Holt. The argument can be made (though not by me) that they overpaid to get their man at quarterback. Now they must do the same at wide receiver. Adding Holt to Hester, developing Earl and bringing in a second-round receiver will put this offense in position to have a wonderful 2009.

I don't mean to sound greedy, Jerry. What you did in the last forty-eight hours changed the face of this franchise. But now is not the time to rest on the laurels of brilliant maneuvering. Now is the time to pull a Patriots. Put both feet on the gasoline.

Sign Torry Holt.

I said maybe a month ago to take a look at Ramses Barden. Now more than ever i encourage you all to do so. If Earl the Squirrel can (and should be able to) rekindle the mojo he and cutler had, Barden should be a perfect fit!!!

Then we'd have our burner and reverser: Hester
Our go to posession "hands" man: the Squirrel
Our 6'6" go up and get it guy: Barden
...not to mention our TE tandem and Forte's catching/screening/and check-down ability.

If this OL can just do a pretty good job, we should be a premier offense...

ages of possition players:
Cutler: 26 (next month)
Hester: 26
Forte: 23
Olsen: 24
Bennett: 22
+whatever WR we draft will be 22
...there is SO MUCH opportunity for this O to grow up, TOGETHER..... sky's the limit my friends!!!!

anyway, here are some link to Barden.... they compare him to Colston!!! i think we can get this guy with our 1st comp pick in the late 3rd round....

Oh yeah. I need to apologize too....

Dear Jerry (+staff and ownership),

I'm sorry, and thank you. For a while there (my whole life), I thought the bears were taking advantage of the fact that they do, in fact, have the largest market for football. The largest because NY has a split fan base, as did LA when they had teams. Anyway, I see now that you do give a shit, and your balls aren't located in VMs purse. You have answered my football prayers. Therefore, I apologize. I don't mean to stretch an inch into a mile.... but.... can we pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease have a WR now??? They'll want to come now..... BTW, thanks also for indirectly sticking it to players like Berrian! Good thing his biggest reason for leaving chicago was the QB and not the money (yeah right). I'm sure he shed a tear....

By the way, I wonder how much Old Spice is going to pay Urlacher for this:

''He'll do a great job,'' Urlacher said. ''He's got a **swagger** about him which, personally, I love a quarterback who has a swagger. He's cocky, but not too cocky. I like that. I think you have to have that as your quarterback, somebody who's confident and will get the job done.''

Jeff..........I rarely speak on this site (although I faithfully read it almost daily) and I rarely disagree with your opinions.......however......in the last few days I have found myself at odds with some of your statements....couple that with the fact that Jay Cutler is now a bear (i thought i was high when i heard that) thus I had the urge to ditch my vouyeristic ways and delve into interactive blogging. Jeff......I really think you are one of the more knowledgable and level headed bears fans however, you seemed to lose it a little a few days before the trade (eg. mediocrity....get jay period.....something about rasheid davis sucking....etc.......)

Now I'm not saying that your wrong I'm just saying that although that this might possibly be a great thing for the bears I was suprised you went for the big trade when it seemed like that was not one of our most glaring needs......Kyle in my opinion was on the upslide and given more protection and good receivers I think would have blossomed quite nicely.....Granted Jay has the top gun arm and accuracy and can hit hester in stride (which Im hoping to see alot). I just want us to stay level and not fly off the handle and act like redskins fans and start ranking off season moves instead of wins and losses and get dissappointed that much more if their "sure thing" doesnt pan out.

Cutler does make us more dynamic and unpredictable .... we have the ability now to strike from anywhere on the field....exciting? Yes...... entertaining? Yes....... Big plays? Absolutely.

But think of this.....look at all the talent on the Cowgirls.. Skins...Chargers...Bengals. Teams with insane offensive talent........do you see any rings lately?

Dont get me wrong guys....Im a diehard Bears Fan.....I hope we win it all and Jay is man for may years to come........I just want us to stop acting like we won anything.....last I checked our record in 2009 is 0-0 .................

We still have holes and people still need to gel into a cohesive team and we are 0-0. There is still a lot of work to do. I just love how this should change the dynamic of our Offense. You have to understand some of us are like kids that have been waiting all year for that one Christmas present we want so, so badly and then finally get it. Except we have been waiting 24 years since the SB shuffle. I was 9. It is hard not to get a little overzealous at the possibilities. And remember he grew up cheering for the Bears just like us. He is already a kindred spirit. This has to be a dream come true for him like it would be for any of us to lead Da Bears.

I don't even know what a Bears QB rifling passes all around the field looks like. I am having fantasies about it but soon I will have actual memories of it and that is f'ing awesome.

So keep it coming level headed ones. There is still a lot of work to do. As Mr. Wolf once said, "Let's not start sucking eachother's d#@*s just yet."

"So pretty please with sugar on top, sign the f'ing Holt."

And I will get a little ahead of myself. I have been watching some Cutler highlights. That former Jets QB who used to lose to us a lot since Lovie has been here for the Puke and Piss (can't quite recall his name) was the gunslinger. And people were using the Sexy Cannon for he who may be #2 (what is up with Leftwich?). What about "The Rifleman" for #6? We won't know a nickname until we have seen what he has out there most likely but it is never to soon to start thinking out loud.

That is exactly what we need to do. Holt mentoring Hester, Pace mentoring Williams. This would be ideal and cement this trade for me. We need to get Cutler wideout weapons, not just space fillers, or this trade really won't amount to as much as is already hyped. Yeah, he's good, but he's got to throw to somebody besides a converted CB, RB, and TE. Get Holt, shit get Plax! Get someone for our new golden boy.

Here are some other reasons that trading for Cutler makes such good sense for the Bears:

» His strong arm will allow him to be effective in the inclement weather with which the Bears deal in the middle and late portions of the season in Chicago and places such as Green Bay.

» The Bears already have one of the most dynamic running backs in the league in Matt Forte, who had a sensational rookie season in 2008. Cutler's big and talented arm will make Forte even more effective.

» The Bears' defense struggled last season but is capable of making strides. It is notable that it ranked fifth in the NFL against the run, although the fact it was 30th against the pass and most opponents were able to move the ball successfully through the air had something to do with that. The point-scoring capability that Cutler brings also should help the defensive effort.

» The Bears' special teams are strong, and the field-position game can only bring out the best in a good quarterback.

"(The Bears) gave up a lot," linebacker Brian Urlacher was quoted as saying by the Chicago Tribune. "Cutler must be pretty good. I guess we got better as a team."

You guessed right, Brian.

I don't think Holt is the guy we need to go after. I would rather see JA go after Joe Jerovicious or Matt Jones (and his baggage).

Our Special Teams have consistently set up our O with great field posistion. With that said, big targets are more valuable. Either one of these guys will create missmatch opportunities - with the rest of our guys. I don't see Holt creating the same dillema for opposing defenses.

HOLT! Sign Holt dammit! The Bears could still draft another WR if a good one is available but we need somebody that is going to keep a defense honest on the other side of the field. Does Holt really intimidate anyone anymore? No, but they would have to pay a lot more attention to him than somebody like... hmm.... Rashied Davis? Earl Bennett? Brandon Rideau? My Aunt Linda? Or anyone else nobody has ever had to pay attention to when the offense was on the field?

Sorry Aunt Linda, but you do suck at running routes.

Right after Pat Bowlen announced that Jay Cutler was going to be traded, King's column didn't even mention Da Bears as a possibility!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/03/31/Cutler.Broncos/index.html

"Among the teams certain to be interested are Tampa Bay, the New York Jets and Detroit.... Other teams are likely to be interested, including Cleveland, Minnesota, San Francisco and possibly Carolina."

Nice call Peter.

As for Holt - I will applaud if we get him, but I'd rather go after Plaxico Burress. He compliments Hester better than Holt does and is a better red zone threat. I'd also like to look at Matt Jones (I know a dangerous pattern is developing) for the same reason. I think Holt is going to the Titans anyway.

#23 Tenacious D said . . .

I view the trade as an admission by the Bears braintrust that having a game manager (Kyle) at the helm of the offense will not be good enough to win 10 games this year, given the state of our defense. Our defense isn't what it once was, when we could hold teams to 10 points, get good field position from special teams, and hope for 2 td's to win 14-10. We gave up more than 21 points in 8 games last year, and I don't see the defense getting substantially better, even with improved coaching and Lovie calling plays.

Which brings me back to Cutler. Larry Mayer on da site actually wrote something that helped the trade make more sense to me. He said if Cutler was in the draft this year with his current skill-set he would hands-down be the first overall pick. So we traded the 18th & 80th or so picks this year and a probable 20 - 25th pick next year to obtain the undisputed best player in this year's draft. Bold move? Sure, but its equitable for both sides when you plug in the numbers from the draft value chart that all the teams use.

#24 Grubowski said . . .

Holt is in the twilight of his career. Grass and December weather will bring out his age. Unless we can get him for a fire-sale price...I say we should look elsewhere.

I know we need a deep threat. But my question is whether we put him on the otherside of field to compliment Hester, or if we send Hester back to being soley a special teams player so he can concentrate on what he does best.

There's a great open letter to Jerry written by Neil Hayes at the Sun Times

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/hayes/1509942,hayes-letter-angelo-040309.article

Well done, Neil! I second that!

I'm one who likes the Plax idea. I don't know about his character pre-shooting, but I will say I thought that thing was totally overblown - his teammate Steve Smith had just been jacked THREE NIGHTS EARLIER in New York City and he was freaked out about it - I might guess he wasn't the only Giant that was carrying in the ensuing days after that scary incident.

You have to take that into account. And he is one truly great, huge, give-me-the-damn-ball receiver.

I AM scared about Holt's age - he'll turn 33 in June. Would like someone to be able to tell me he won't be the next Marty Booker. Had a decent season last year, better than any of our guys, but a huge falloff from the previous year. The Rams suck, and I don't remember if Bulger was out, so not sure if that was age or circumstance.

Now that this is done, there is truly nothing not to love, to be excited beyond our wildest dreams. I am utterly and completely appreciative of Jerry Angelo, who never imagined that this could happen at the start of the offseason, wasn't planning for a QB trade, but saw an incredible opportunity fall in his lap and made sure he took advantage of it - as he said "once we decided, we were in it to win it."

Get the bids out for the Jerry Angelo Statue, and don't cheap-ass it! At least 50 feet tall!!!

I know Jerry is working the WR angle, and I now fully trust him to do the right thing. I'd love there to be some concensus on the Plax deal, given the mitigating circumstances behind his troubles. May not be able to help us at the beginning of the season, but since

WE'RE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS BABY!!!

he'll help then, won't he???

As an aside, we're becoming the VANDY BEARS and I love it!!! Maybe Hunter H needs to stick around - maybe he'll play better too, just to represent for Vanderbilt West! I'll take some more Tulane players too - Matt, who you recommending for us?

SO EXCITING TO BE A CHICAGO BEAR FAN RIGHT NOW, AND FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE!!!!

Now let's hope our coaches get a clue!

Right now I think there are too many unanswered questions about Plaxico Burress.

First and foremost is jailtime.

Second is that the Commish is surely going to hand down a lengthy suspension (and I think 8 games might be a low estimate, this guy's a ball-buster).

Third is his health. He shot himself in the fucking leg. Can he run? Can he walk? Leg wounds can be disasterous, and maybe some of you know, but I don't, where exactly the wound was? That makes a difference.

Fourth is his personality. He did turn down a healthy contract from the Giants this week, that's why they released him.

Just food for though...

April 4, 2009

#30 jeff said . . .

giants were trying to move him into an incentive-laden deal. he wasn't interested.

if you're the bears right now at wide receiver, torry holt provides a one-year stopgap wherein hopefully you can develop earl bennett and whoever is the second round selection.

#31 Tenacious D said . . .

I'm with you on Holt, Jeff. The Rams were trying to force feed Avery the ball last season, so Holt didn't get as many looks and probably a lot more double teams. I think he can still play, at least for one or two more years, but can we afford him? He seems to be looking for a warmer weather climate than we can offer, too.

Not real interested in Plax due to the character thing. Ochocinco might be worth a look, but we have to give up a player (Vasher, maybe?) since we have no draft ammo left.

Why Cutler changes everything ...
1. Forte was good when defenses keyed off his every move. When they have to key off Cutler instead, look out!
2. Cutler to Hester is about to get lethal. No one can keep up with Hester, and almost no one (maybe Manning?) can rip it deep on a dime like Cutler.
3. How many years have we spent dreading every possession our offense takes the field? We now root for a franchise qb.
4. We'll see how the D responds when they've got an offense that keeps other teams off the field, and when they don't have the pressure of winning games on their own. There's a lot to fix on the D, but getting a stud qb can't hurt.
5. Either Ron Turner has been held back for years by the lack of a star qb, or he hasn't. In which case he will get his butt fired in 2009, the year of no excues. Either way, the offense gets better.

Holt's agent already said that Holt was not interested in the Bears. He has narrowed his search to the Titans and the Jags.

His agent said this AFTER the Cutler deal, so I am dubious. There is a lot of baggage around Plax, but I think his skill set is worth it. He will miss eight games. Any jail time will be short and done before the season starts and then itll be eight games, tops.

If Plax does jail time, I think the Commish will take that into consideration. I say he is our best option.

I outlined some other options here:

26 - I like Plax also, interesting mention on the Steve Smith counterargument. I understand why he would carry a gun, but have no idea why in the world he would have a round chambered allowing the possibility for the gun to go off.

Plax will be 32 by the start of the season, will likely do jail time thanks to Bloomberg, and like Jeff mentioned will likely be suspended 8 games. Plax to me is an elite WR and the Giants don't come close the SB ring without him.

I think we really need that veteran WR, Holt, Plax, or even Harrison (who might be interested now with JC.)
Plax would be in jail and or suspended but to have him for the last 8 games and hopefully the playoffs would be huge.

No Chad though, we would have to give up some picks or players and I am really not a fan of him or his antics, I understand some WRs are outgoing and have personalities but his shit is too much. To me he cares more about marketing himself and being in front of any camera than winning, just my opinion.

He sounds very immature and diva like from reading about his problems with the Giants and not being willing to compromise at all about his disputed bonus and contract situations, against what most people were advising him (when Rosenscum thinks you should be more reasonable you know things are not good). I guess immature and diva-like are just part of what comes along with being a #1 WR so I guess we should still try to get him. Hopefully we have the veterans to keep him in check.

In his defense some Giants teammates sounded bummed that he is gone and that he was a good locker room guy.

I'm all for signing Torry Holt but what I hear is that Holt is drawing a LOT of interest now, can pick & choose his landing spot and
the Giants cutting renowned sharpshooter, Plaxico Burress, only enhances Holt's barganing position. And can we please stop with "Sign Plaxico Burress" chants. The guy is going to jail and the only one who doesn't know that, including his own lawyer, is Plaxico. Not hearing any buzz Marvin Harrison. Also, I am so sick of the ESPN spin that Urhlacher's quote is some kind of UNendorsement of Cutler. Jeff's open was dead-on target about Peter King. The same goes for that little weasel, Wally Cox, er, I mean, John Clayton. Another Brett Favre sycophant who claimed authorship for breaking the Cutler trade becuase he, supposedly, had the "details" first. Sorry, "Mr. Peppers", but the trade broke via NFL.COM for you to claim any credit is laughable. Like your comment last season that Brett Favre would rather retire than sign with the Jets. I much prefer Fox's NFL inside man, Chris Landry, to Mssrs. King, Clayton or Chris Mortenson.
