Okay kids, here's how it will work this year. As we head into the weekend, we're going to separate the contest into two parts. Part one will be guessing correctly who the Bears will select with their only day one choice. Everyone who gets that choice right will have the opportunity to guess the Sunday choices. The most correct Sunday selections will get the opportunity to write a Wednesday column for the main page, analyzing the Bears' draft.
For the sake of debate, I'll give you the five players I expect to be high on the list at #49.
(5) Who the hell knows?
(4) Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma
(3) Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
(2) Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
(1) Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State
Post your picks below and I'll be back when the selection is made or if anything important happens.

We need a starter on day 1. We have converted corners at WR (Hester and Davis)and possibly FS (Bowman) that we will be asking to start if changes aren't made. We are also asking Idonijie to change to DE because of the surplus at DT and lack of DEs. We have Pro Bowl talent in Harris, consistentcy in Adams and an up and comer in Harrison. On top of all that Raji is most likely the only impact DT in the draft and he will be gone in the top of the 1st, why on earth would we take a DT?

KC trades away the only bright spot on that awful team for a 2nd rounder straight up in Gonzalez who while old is essentially the measuring stick for all TEs in the league today, went to the ProBowl (he basically has a permanent spot there I think), had over 1000 yards receiving, and 10 TDs.
Then over in KC they reward Delsuckass for throwing away their playoff hopes (quite literally) by signing his sorry whiny ass to a 5 year extension.

I don't quite understand the format this year, do we just pick one guy and hope we're right? If not too bad for day 2? What if no one gets it right? I like last years format - points for guessing position and bonus if you can correctly guess the player.

I know what Miami did last year, I know we should have gone at least 12-4 last year, and I know this is a win now league, but I think this unit needs 1-3 years to get to an elite status. I'd be happy if we addressed our defensive problems with this draft (along with at least 2 crapshoot WRs), give the receivers we have all the opportunity to perform, and then look at the UFA WRs for 2010.

Barden is a big target, but he's a slower possession type receiver whose never played against elite corners and safeties.
If Ramses were around in the 3rd for Chicago I think it would be a great pick, but I have a feeling he's going to go to someone like Pittsburgh late in the 2nd rd. or to the Giants in the early 3rd.

"I don't want to draft a receiver to get the media off my back only to find out he's just a vanilla cone. We want to come out with something that has sprinkles on it. A little twist to it. Bring a little playmaking ability to the position. We want a guy that has a little juice to him."
April 25, 2009
#72 Phantom One said . . .It's official, Matthew Stafford will now be the new punching bag for the Bears twice a year.
According to a source, Stafford will receive a six-year, $41.7 million deal that could be worth $78 million if he achieves all of his playing incentives. The source also said he will receive $41.7 million in guarantees. That tops the $41 million in guarantees Albert Haynesworth received from the Washington Redskins.
April 25, 2009
#73 Phantom One said . . .Right now Jerry Angelo is asking himself, how much? How much am I willing to give up to get Anquan Boldin?
And his answer will be - just enough. We can afford to give up our second, 1 of our 5ths, and Nate Vasher in return for an elite WR that we will have to pay elite money. We have the cap room, and our other needs can be addressed with more short term solutions.
Give Jay Boldin.
Wishful thinking, but this is doable. He just needs to adhere to the same principle he used to get JC, be in it to win it, because if he doesn't, Philly/NYG/or the Vikings will.

#82 Phantom One said . . .Well, I think we are going to draft Rashad Johnson.
I think there will be a run on WR in the begining of the 2nd round, and about 7 will be gone by the time we're on the clock, so we will look to get a better value at Free Safety.
However, since so many people here are also picking Rashad Johnson, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Louis Delmas falls to us, and we take him!

Vasher/Manning/"fill in the Defensive Lineman" and a 2nd for Boldin? Sure.I don't see JA unloading Hester - too much time and now money invested in him to be a throw-in in that trade. I can't remember one significant injury that Devin has sustained and Boldin has plenty. I think, frankly, that the 2nd rounder by itself should be enough to get him. If the Bears toss in a player, it'll be someone that was starter-"quality" that just couldn't get on the field. Whoever named Vasher first...
That said, I wish I hadn't made my pick so early...now if I'm right, I have half of the board picking with me on Sunday!

#86 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .I wouldn't do the Hester and a second for Boldin. If we traded Hester we would be right back to needing someone to stretch the field(That's not Boldin's game). We need our picks this year, we will be o.k. at WR for a year. We will sign a FA or 2 after the draft. There will be some new FA WR's cut from other teams too.We have to keep the picks we have, Urlacher, Briggs, A.Brown Ogun, Peanut, these guys aren't spring chickens anymore so we HAVE to get some depth this year or we will be really in trouble down the line. I think there is a better chance we trade down for more picks then to trade our picks for ANY WR. (1) season and there is a whole new crop of FA WR's, so if nobody steps up this year they will sign a big name wr next year.

#107 BDG said . . .oops, that was me, not anonymous...
April 25, 2009
#108 Max said . . .yeah from what I've heard Jackson isn't that bad of a pick. Not too many true 3-4 ends in this draft. I loved Curry but I would build from the front back too.
April 25, 2009
#109 Max said . . .I say Curry woulda been the better call. There is no way a player can go from 18th projected to No 3 in a month and a half. I mean this guy wasn't even projected in the top 10 until a week or two ago.
Curry is the best defensive player in the draft. Coulda gotten Jackson further down.

#112 Kidron Music said . . .I'm kinda surprised with their depth at LB even with the lose of Peterson the Seahawks didn't grab Monroe. Not often you get a shot at a elite LT and with Walter Jones getting old and having micro fracture surgery I would have had to take Monroe. But Curry is a stud and Mora likes defense. Gonna have a ton of money tied up in 3 LB's now
April 25, 2009
#113 BDG said . . .I'm just glad the Redskins didn't get Sanchez...
I had heard several rumors that the Redskins would trade up to get Sanchez, and then trade Jason Campbell to the Vikings.
Not the Jason Campbell is terrifying, but I love playing against Travaris Jackson twice a year!
April 25, 2009
#114 Max said . . .Agreed Kidron,
Heard that rumer too and Jason Campbell is way better than anyone on the Queens rosterApril 25, 2009

They are prepared to let Travaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels duke it out for the right to be the starting QB!
Don't anybody let them know that's a terrible plan!

April 25, 2009
#141 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .I still think there will be a run on WR's... all these teams that passed on WR's in the first round will still have a pick before us in the 2nd.
If anyone falls a lot, it could Hakeem Nicks, and I would love that, I think he has the potential to be exactly what we need.
He's gotten some bad press for gaining weight, and a poor wonderlic score, but if he was perfect, he wouldn't fall as much as we want him too.

#142 Kidron Music said . . .who just saw that drew rosenhaus commercial? that shit wa funny!
April 25, 2009
#143 Max said . . .I hope Maclin doesn't end up in Minny... that would make me a little sad. Or Nicks or Britt.
I hope it's Percy Harvin. I think he is the best bust potential left that the WR would want.
April 25, 2009

Forte
Hester
D.Manning
Tank Johnson
Bradley
TillmanPretty good players. The Bears messed up with Bradley, and Bazuin was a dumb pick. But our track record in the 2nd is pretty good overall.

April 25, 2009
#172 Max said . . .Damn Fresno,
I am sitting at a desk in my security officer uniform, angry because I missed three or four picks and about 20 minutes of my break being stuck on an elevator. No good mexican food and no Beer...
Bears better make it worth it
April 25, 2009
#173 Kidron Music said . . .U of I product Davis going to the Fins. Hope he likes the weather down there because he certainly isn't gonna like trying to defend Moss and Owens in that division
April 25, 2009
#174 BDG said . . .I bet the Giants take Kenny Britt, and that's all for first round WR.
So that would be DHB, Crabtree, Maclin, Harvy, Britt in the first round.
I hope that one of the teams in the 2nd who need a WR believe Todd Mcshay's hype and they reach for Massaquio. That might leave us with Nicks or Robiskie...
April 25, 2009
#175 Max said . . .There are a lot of teams that could go WR in front of us in the second. I'm hoping Rashad is there

April 25, 2009
#187 Phil from SATX said . . .Actually, I think we might be screwed for WR's.
The teams that have taken them so far, haven't been the teams that really need a WR (except Oakland)
San Fran, Minny, and Philly weren't the teams with high needs for WR.
We still have several teams with needs at WR, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Inianapolis Colts, Jacksonville, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets, St Louis Rams, Tampa bay Bucs, Tennessee Titans...
Six of those teams pick before we do. Others might trade above us to grab a value WR.
April 25, 2009
#188 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .I can't believe I almost spaced out that the draft was on!
Biggest bonehead move so far - that Crabtree wasn't the first wr taken - reminds me of one of Jeff's best lines - about Al Davis and the blanket -
Listen - if there is absolutely any chance of being able to get Boldin with our second and a player - THAT SHIT'S GOTTA happen!!!! There's not one player that the Bears can draft with this year's picks that could come close to the impact Boldin would have.
MAKE IT HAPPEN JERRY!!!! WE'LL LOVE YOU FOREVER!!!! WE'RE TALKING LIFETIME EMPLOYMENT HERE!!!!!
GO BEARS!!!!!

April 25, 2009
#199 Kidron Music said . . .I was a huge Nicks fan too, didn't expect him to make it to us though. Packers are having way too solid of a draft. There will be a lot of teams taking WR's before us still. I don't think we will have good options there.
April 25, 2009

I couldnt think of a better LB core than Briggs/Maualuga/Urlacher. Rey is a stud and a play maker, I dont think he makes it to us. I think we have to go Saftey.

We are dangerous on O now. Next year when we lose our #1 and #3, they will be low picks because we are going deep in the playoffs with JC. I'm, dare I say it, a HAPPY Bears fan.

#330 Peoria Matt said . . .I'm a little surprised at the shortfall in the chart value - I did think that draft value chart was used by everybody. Maybe there are so many guys that the Bears value right now that having the extra picks was what was important, nowtgetting full value according to the chart. And when you think about it, it makes sense - the Bears still have many needs on D (where I think most of this draft will be going) - plus WR plus some more depth on Oline.
That said, there's absolutely no reason to kill Jerry for this except f0r the buzz kill he threw at us for waiting all day for nothing. And CA, I'm guessing that's no buzz kill for you, too late for that, right? Have another one on me! Cheers!
Tomorrow's the big day - no, it looks like no Boldin to be had, on the other hand no one else is pulling the trigger either, so maybe???? Big player trade coupled with some 3rd rounders which are no slouches? We can still hope, Bear fans!!
Jeff is the one who said that this draft is a non-event for us - we already had our draft - sounds like JA was listening AGAIN!
So today was a non-event, tomorrow not so - lots of picks to come. Can't wait!

Has to be Robiskie and maybe Chung or one of the other safeties that went immediately before they picked.
For whatever reason, SI grades Johnson out waaaaay lower than the other draft boards that I'd read.
I can't imagine Iglesias will still be there, but that wouldn't suck either.

#334 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .I don't care what anyone says. This is a huge event for the future of this club. There are some very good players left. Sure we didn't pick in the first 2 rounds so what. Now we get players that want to prove they should have been in the first 2 rounds. Everyone that says JA can't draft should be elated which seems to be about 75% of the people on here. It just gives him more picks in case he does screw up someone. Think of how many solid picks have come out of the middle rounds. A shit ton have. Plus a few of the guys everyone wanted with our pick is still there. Be patient. It's all going to work out. The Bears are improving drastically from last year and that's all we can ask our GM to do.

If JA had a close grade on a bunch of these type players it would have been irresponsible of him to do anything but trade down. This could be the difference of us getting one of these guys and being able to take a chance on a Patrick Turner or Louis Murphy type player later or taking one of these guys and not having an extra pick later. There was NOBODY that was a no-brainer to take when we were up so it might actually have been the best decision.

#372 O-Line wins games said . . ."With the 4,962nd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select Someone Iveneverheardof."
JA, moments following his only selection in the '09 draft, steps up to the microphone and says, "Sprinkles. This kid has got some sprinkles. I mean, deep down, I think we may have reached a little bit for Iveneverheardof, but you can't argue the fact that he's got sprinkles."
An unnamed reporter asks, "did he play college here in the states, Jerry?"
"No. Our scouts found him schuking salmon somewhere in the vicinity of Siberia. Good hands. Good sprinkle. Listen, we were in this to win it. Someone will be a great ball player, and a guy we covented with this pick. The 4,962nd. He was a real steal here. That we may have reached a bit, but ahh, how far would you be willing to reach for a sprinkle? Yeah know."
Another reporter eagerly steps in and asks, "Jerry, Mel Kipper said that he's never heard of Iveneverheardof," and the media room starts cracking up.
"Well, to be honest, he's a stealth pick, and he's got great hip movement and you know if you can catch a live salmon he can handle Cutler's heater."
Larry Mayer asked, "Is he happy to be a Bear?"
"Well to inform him that he's been drafted would mean that we would have to call him, and unfortunately Someone Iveneverheardof is a really hard guy to get a hold of."

#375 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .Christ. It's getting all Craigslist-y in here. Fresno, you are a douche, or else you're 13. You're probably 13. Where is Jeff when you need him? I'm not a fan of JA's strategy at this point, and went back and looked at all of his drafts, vs. the teams w/outstanding talent evaluation (Colts, Pats). He's really terrible at drafting. He's made some moves that turned out well in the end, but really, I think the Buzuin pick last year pretty much sums it up. #62 overall and he's now on the practice squad in Houston. No analyst had him going anywhere near that high.
It's all strange to me, until I realized that he was in Tampa Bay for 14 years prior. It's all beginning to make sense to me now.
But you know what, it's going to be great to watch the Bears run an offense w/a bonafide starting QB. I look forward to seeing if Forte can put together another stellar season, if the defense can rebound, and maybe even a Hester punt return or two. A couple of blocked punts, some close games, Bears F-ing Football. That's what it's all about. Barbecue, beers, and the Bears. And Wednesday night Euchre.

#377 Max said . . .I watched the draft all day....
I waited by the tv and had the laptop in my face all day... I flipped back and forth between the NFLN and ESPN....
And then the Bears traded away their pick.
Tomorrow, I'll be at the Bulls game, so Ill miss most of the draft.
The Bears trading down seriously dampened my fun today. But at the same time, Rashad Johnson, who most people seemed to think the Bears would take at #49 is still available. So, with the 4th pick tomorrow, we can still take him, pay him a little less than we would have, and still add a pick.
I think it was the right thing to do. Massaq0ui has the dropsies, let him play next to Braylon Edwards next year and they can lead the league in dropped passes together.
Even if they don't take Rashad Johnson (I hope they do) there is still plenty of talent available. Somebody posted a pretty good list above... there is some good picks available for sure.
I'm hoping for Rashad Johnson and then Louis Murphy with the next pick!
PS, Fresno, are you drunk? Or are you always an asshole? We all watched the draft all day just like you, but, jesus, it's not the end of the world to not have a first day pick. Lighten up a little. Don't hate BDG for not being such a whiny bitch like you were when JA traded away the pick. We are still going to win the NFC North.

#378 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .Ok, ok, ok. I have calmed down. I have stepped back and looked at what we has transpired and tried to be completely unbiased. . .
STUPID... STUPID STUPID STUPID! We need help at receiver. Massaquoi (who Angelo liked) was there. We need help at safety. Johnson was available. Max Unger, a competent understudy to Olin Kruetz, was there. I do not understand.
Angelo did not do this because he thought he could get a better deal... I am not even going to discuss the whole points breakdown per draft pick cause I think its a dumb way to look at things, but come on people... He did it because he is afraid. He made one ballsy move (JC) and then decided not to keep going with that boldness. He decided to run back to the castle and hide in the f'ing tower.
We needed a receiver, we needed a safety, we needed D-line help. Who have we gotten so far? Oh, thats right, NO ONE
This leaves us with one (count them: 1) pick in the first two rounds in the 2009 and 2010 drafts commbined... 1 FUCKIN PICK! And hell, we still have 5 rounds to go this year, a whole season, and another round next year to trade that one pick away. Plenty of time for our "Brain Trust"
I am livid. But hey, to be a fair sport, I will still try and predict the rest of the draft, I mean shit we have 9 picks to waste in the later rounds anyway:
68: Lawrence Sidbury - DE - Richmond
99: T.J. Lang - OG - Eastern Michigan
105: Trade this and next years 2nd round pick for a third and a fourth in the 2010 draft
119: David Bruton - S - Notre Dame
140: Patrick Turner - WR - USC
154: Tony Fiammetta - FB - Syracuse
190: Nate Davis - QB - Ball State
246: Chris Baker - DT - Hampton
251: Bear Pascoe - TE - Fresno St. (BECAUSE HIS NAME IS BEAR GOD DAMN IT)Ill see yall in the morning. Hopefully I will be in a better mood.

Max, I think you're a little nuts right now, and I can't believe the level of vitriol aimed at Jerry for trading down - even if more than half was from the drunken West Coast. I believe someone even said that by trading down, he undid every kudos he deserved when he traded for Cutler. Puleeze!!
ESPECIALLY if Rashad Johnson, who many have mentioned here as the one they coveted with the 2nd rounder, is there when they pick in the 3rd??? Then he can only be called a freaking genius - he got what he wanted and another 4th rounder besides.
Remember that you have to have teams on the other side who want to trade down with you and have ammo they're willing to give you - it ain't that easy. It was the Seahhawks who wanted Unger (I did too, sorry Rancid, but you still win points with the pick!) - and if they were unwilling to give up any more than that 4th rounder for it, Jerry still to decide whether to stand pat, maybe take the same guy he knew would be there later - or pull the trigger even if the value chart didn't quite justify it. He saved the Bears some bucks in the process, and while you roll your eyes and say "of course he did, that's for the cheap McCaskeys, what else is new", remember that that's an integral part of his job, allocating resources wisely. He already spent plenty of money this offseason, making plenty of moves, giving us a brand new offensive line and JAY CUTLER - if he can get the same guy he wanted plus another and save a few mil that can be spent elsewhere, then IT WAS THE RIGHT MOVE.
Someone mentioned that Day 2 was for special teams - MAYBE true two years ago, but not since they moved the 3rd round picks to Sunday - those two 3rd rounders are still high level picks.
Bearstransplant, great post! Love the "all Craigslist-y" line!
Hey, Day 2's here already! (sort of) I only hope Jerry doesn't get nervous and decide he needs to move up 4 picks just to ensure his safety's there. A lot of time to think (overthink) between last night and today.

#383 CalvinJames said . . .First off I would like to apologize to all the readers on this for my part in the Fresno, CA BEARS FAN debate. I should have never engaged with him in the back and forth. I know none of you need to waste your time reading such crap from us. I just kinda lost it when I felt he went over board, when I should have just let it go.
Second KentuckyBearsFan that was a very good prediction.
This is were I stand with the BEARS
Of course we were all disappointed that we didn't make a pick after waiting all day, but these are some of the sacrifices we have to make to acquire a front line starting QB. It's very feasible that this exact same thing could happen again next year. If we don't get some depth in this draft a stud QB will do nothing for us for the next 3 years. Even if we don't get any starters for this year, these players are vital to managing a salary cap and promoting competition. I wanted Rashad Johnson terribly, so I was as disappointed as any that he wasn't our pick when he was right their available, but we only get part of the info. on these prospects. We don't have the knowledge that the BT does about were and when certain players will come off the board and how much certain players would fit our system. It has been my belief that JA has done a better job with his picks after the 2nd round than he has before it. I would think it would benefit us if we ended up getting a Rashad Johnson, Michael Johnson or Juaquin Iglesies in the 3rd and have the opportunity to take a chance on a player that they normally couldn't with the extra pick like a Louis Murphy, Tony Fiametta, or Patrick Turner. We have to always have an eye towards the future of this club. We sacrificed a lot of the future to get Cutler, so we have to be methodical in building our team around him. There will be a second wave of FA's after the rookie's sign their contracts and with an abnormally high amount of WR's going early in the draft that should mean more WR's being cut. I know this, I like our team better right now than I did last year. I'm not going to get crazy and think they will make us elite in (1) off season. They already made us very damn good and the off season continues. Personally I would like to see us sustain for years in the mold of Pittsburgh or N.E. It takes time to get to that level.
So today I HOPE they get Rashad Johnson with our 1st pick and come back and grab Ramses Barden with our 2nd pick in the 3rd round. I'm actually excited because we have a bunch of picks to see today. Let's go BT hit us a couple home runs for the future.

I keep getting this picture in my mind of JA and the boy's having a few coctails after they finished last nite and rolling around on the floor laughing after reading some of these posts.
Anyway, as JA said in the short news conference that the Cards just didn't seem motivated enough to accept his offer. So he at least showed some interest.
Personally, I kinda like this Patrick Turner kid. It seems we had a bit of a problem last year with pass plays in the redzone, and although not real fast, he seems to have great hands and height for over the head catches. Kinda reminds me of Larry Fitzgerald. Just a thought.
Well, I'll be watching and reading. Had some great posts yesterday.Keep it up!April 26, 2009
#388 Peoria Matt said . . .As a Mizzou grad, I'm guessing JA didn't pick William Moore because of his injury issues. He was an absolute stud his junior year and would have been worth a pick in the late first round...but his senior year was very mediocore due to some nagging injuries.
I'm interested to see what the Bears do today. We have to hope that at least a couple of these guys can contribute right away...especially someone at safety.

#389 Peoria Matt said . . ."Personally I would like to see us sustain for years in the mold of Pittsburgh or N.E. It takes time to get to that level."
BDG, I appreciate your Bears love....but did you read that before you posted it? You think with Lovie and Jerry that somehow a genius switch will be flipped and we will be comparable to N.E. and Pittsburgh?
And I hate to bring this up....but this is Jerry's 8th year with the Bears. What exactly is the timetable for reaching this verrrry ambitious goal? The key to these teams is coaching and player scouting and development. The Bears are light years away in those departments.

April 26, 2009
#392 BDG said . . .Yeah I did read it. I know it hasn't developed to that point yet but we are far more consistent in the last few years than before JA arrived. With the addition of Jay Cutler we now have the power to lure top end FA WR's. This is something we couldn't do in years past. I agree JA has a long ways to go in his drafts, but he has made us much more consistent with out and elite QB which is something the the top teams all have.

Jerry hasn't been very adept at that.
April 26, 2009
#398 Sarcastiholic said . . .Definitely would have liked to get Rashad Johnson but there has to be a reason JA didn't go that route. I don't know what it is they don't like about him but it must be something because they supposedly looked into him a bunch. #404 reverend dave said . . .Analysis
Positives: Rare athleticism for a player of his size. Versatile defender with experience at tackle and end. Good size potential. Naturally large man with room for plenty of additional muscle mass. Good initial quickness off the snap. Flashes the functional upper-body strength to disengage from blockers. Surprising balance for his height. Can break down in space and make the secure tackle.Negatives: Struggles with leverage inside, and might lack the burst off the snap and flexibility to flank the tackle and close effectively as a defensive end. Too often allows blockers to get into his chest. Inconsistent getting his hands up in the passing lanes. Questionable level of competition. Better raw athlete than football player.
Compares To: TY WARREN, New England -- Gilbert is more of a 3-4 defensive end rather than an edge rusher in a 4-3 alignment. He seems comfortable shooting the gaps to get to the quarterback rather than trying to loop around the edge. If taken by a team operating from primarily a 4-3 base defense, he will be better off playing inside. He has a lot of potential and a rare-sized frame with an excellent wing span, but it took him more than three seasons to start to produce consistently. It could have been due to him settling in at defensive tackle in 2008.
So Jeff was right, we basically drafted a DT. Yay. Welcome our 8th DT to the roster.April 26, 2009
#405 Peoria Matt said . . .seriously? with huge gaping holes at free safety and wr and we get yet another dt? unless we are gonna reinvent the game of football by unveiling the base 5-3 i cant see how this wasnt a lousy decision.
i didnt share the general euphoria over the Cutler deal so my opinion on JA didnt change much, i dont think hes shown me enough in the last couple years to be given the benefit of the doubt on a dubious move like this.April 26, 2009
#406 Sarcastiholic said . . .From Biggsy's blog:
"That means the Bears made the tackle position a priority with their first pick. Harris struggled last season and was suspended for one game for conduct detrimental to the team. The Bears maintain that his left knee has checked out fine, and they backed that up by committing to pay him a $6.65 million roster bonus in February.
But it's clear the team is backing itself up with other options at the position. It could be Marcus Harrison, the third-round pick from last season, is now being viewed as a nose tackle."
Which says to me that Jerry is once again drafting a player as insurance for another questionable 1st round pick.
Not the way to success in the league.
April 26, 2009
#407 BDG said . . .If this pick was just to serve as a nudge to Harris to start producing, seems like a pretty stiff price to pay. Know we have health issues on the line but best player available really didn't seem to apply here - I have to guess that they had a bunch of DB's rated higher than this guy.
April 26, 2009
#408 Who's Laughing Now said . . .Again I don't think JA is god never had never will but look he's had 7 1st rounders since he's been here
Round Pick Overall
1. Chris Williams- jury is still out on him
2. Greg Olsen- great pick
3. Cedric Benson- nfl starter that's off field issues warranted removal
4. Tommie Harris- Pro Bowls
5. Michael Haynes-colossal flop
6. Rex Grossman-had the talent didn't have the head, but still managed to get us to the big game (with a lot of help from the D)
7. Mark Colombo-Solid starter at RT that injuries caused us to give up on too soon.
These aren't horrible picks. Some times the situation led to them leaving, which I know should be looked into, but some you would never have known. Look at Benson's draft class Most of the 1st round could be considered busts. I just think it's expecting too much to think every year it will work out.
Again I'm not in love with JA or Lovie I would die for Pollian and Cower but you have to remain positive that things are headed in the right direction which I think they are.
April 26, 2009
#409 Peoria Matt said . . .Things I'm upset about:
1. I thought money (for the contract extension) was going to keep the Bears from making a play for Boldin. Come to find out, they were willing to pony up the cash, but they offered just a 2nd round pick? You couldn't sweeten up the deal with a player? If you tried the 2nd rounder and Vasher (or the 2nd rounder and Urlacher for all I care because I think Urlacher is done), and the Cards refused, fine. But to be willing apparently to pay 9-10 million for Boldin but not make an earnest effort, I have this sinking feeling like we let our best, last chance for a game-changer WR slip out of our hands. (Well, maybe not the last chance, there's still Plaxico.)
2. Defensive end? Are you serious? I guess the Bears themselves in the end don't even believe that Marinelli is the fix to the d-line all by himself. Looks like they do feel like they need more talent there. But are you telling me that you're content with Bullocks at S???? I kept telling myself that Bullocks was not part of the big plan, that he probably wouldn't even make the roster after the Bears brought in new talent through the draft. But now? JA plays the draft like he has the luxury of not having to reach to fill positions of need. I'd rather see him reach for need than be OK with Bullocks anywhere near our roster.
Maybe he gets a gem at safety in the late rounds. Maybe he signs Lucas and moves Tillman to safety. But right now we have two positions that are going to doom us to mediocrity and I can't understand how JA can let these opportunities go by.
JA said there's no guaruntee of finding someone special. Duh. that's why you get paid the big bucks. Do your job. Go find somebody special.April 26, 2009
#410 BDG said . . .BDG, look at that list and honestly evaluate which of those players has been an absolute stud for the Bears....which at some point you're going to have to draft with a first round pick.
Olsen? That would be the one in my book. And he hasn't reached that level yet.
Harris seems to be a slight head case with injury issues... Benson, head case. Rex, out of work. Colombo, injured. Williams, injured. Haynes, no comment necessary.

#412 BDG said . . .I don't want to be the one to jinx it, but this draft could still end up being a pretty good one. Pats just took Brandon Tate with the 83rd (pretty nice pick..), but two of my favorite players are still available:
Rashad Johnson - the next Mike Brown. Mark my words - this guy's good. He doesn't have the flashy speed, but like Brown, he has the instincts to get himself in the right place at the right time. A real football player - and a ballhawk to boot.
Ramses Barden - the next Brandon Marshall? His scouting report reads a lot like Marshall's did - tall, rangy, lacks great straight-line speed.. We have a quarterback, ladies and gents, who took Brandon Marshall to the next level. Could Barden be next?
April 26, 2009
#413 Peoria Matt said . . .Gibert doesn't fit what the BEARS do at DT size wise.. I have to believe they will look at him at DE. We have 3 DE's that are FA's after the season. Anderson, Idonije, and Ogunalaye. We had to get depth at that position at some point in the draft so why not here. To me worst case scenario he sounds like another Idonije to me with his versatility if he bulks up some. I'll take another Idonije with more upside in the 3rd round every year.

#486 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .Does Cleveland need DE help? Perhaps JA is trying to build a package of players to trade to the Browns for Braylon. Who I drafted in fantasy last year and was pretty good some weeks and invisible other weeks. Very frustrating.
April 26, 2009
#487 Max said . . .BDG- you still think JA was right about this draft? trading down to just get two DE?
we could of had Round 2-William Moore/Rashad Johnson/ or Massaquoi
Round 3- Juaquin Iglesias
Round 4-?this is why i got so pissed off yesterday Because JA is a fucking Idiot...I rather have Johnson or Moore over these two DE..

April 26, 2009
#492 Max said . . .shouldn't we be looking to get a FS or another badass linebacker? Briggs and Urlacher are good but the other spot is a joke. Hillenmeyer? We needed another linebacker that inspires coaches to change the gameplan a bit. Losing Rashad Johnson to the runner up in the superbowl really hurts. we need to bring back brown to contend with earl and bullocks or we are going to have a really frustrating season because of our safeties. kevin payne is not an NFL caliber safety and when daniel manning is on the field for defense i pound whatever drink is in my hand because i know he is going to mess up somehow.
April 26, 2009
#493 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .I like Payne as a Strong safety Johnny, but jesus are you right when it comes to Manning. I love the guy as a returner, but he is nothing short of awful when it comes to the free safety spot

#499 FRESNOizRUDE! said . . .Certainly going to make it interesting to see who gets cut now with 2 Dl additions. Might be they are already cutting the cord on Dusty.
Have to keep
Ogunleye, Adewale/Idonije, Israel/Harrison,Marcus/Harris,Tommie/Brown,Alex/Anderson, Mark
Possible cuts
Dvoracek, Dusty/Adams, Anthony
Cut or staying on practice squad
Clermond, Joe/Toeaina, Matt/Baldwin, Ervin
I would keep Adams over Dusty at this point. Adams played great when they gave him a chance last year.
It makes for some tough decisions drafting (2) DL men this early.April 26, 2009

#520 Max said . . .Fresno,
I still liked our 1st 2 picks a lot. The Melton pick sucked. I'm not sure why they passed on Johnson twice. Maybe they plan to move this D.J. Moore to S. He's supposed to be a great athlete and football player. I'm just going to see how the whole thing plays out before I figure out how I really feel about this draft.April 26, 2009
#521 O-Line wins games said . . .That whole drafting our needs thing is not working out...
God, Jeff is lucky that my predictions have been so far off base that there is no chance I will win the contest for the Wednesday article.
It would not be a positive one
April 26, 2009
#522 FRESNOizRUDE! said . . .I like Moore, but he is only 5'8 7/8. Too short in my opinion. He's not that fast either, but he is somewhat of a playmaker... so I guess we'll see.
April 26, 2009
#523 Max said . . .yea thats what I was thinking- either they move Vasher or Bowman to FS...cause they both have to much talent to sit on the bench...Kiper just said DJ MOORE should of gone in the second round....so not to shabby..

D.J. Moore.
Consensus:
He's short, but he compensates by being slow.Ah, not like we can tell anything before they get on the field anyway by the 4th round.

April 26, 2009
#547 Max said . . .He really shows up in the TX vs. the Nation game in '08. No injury concerns, only drawback seems to be that he's kind of slight, and has a Hester-like tendency to run backwards or dance around sometimes instead of just trying to get an extra yard and go down.
Really freaking fast. I love the way he seems to look the ball into his hands every time. He's going to be at least a year or two in the making, but I like this pick. Cutler can throw it a mile, and now we have 2 WRs who can outrun almost any defense.
