I keep reading from the Peter Kings and Pat Kirwans of the world how the wondrous unknown of this weekend's draft will make it one of the most exciting in years. Questions as thrilling as: Do the Lions feel anybody is worth top pick money? Will the Redskins make a play for borderline professional quarterback Mark Sanchez? Where will tackles Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe end up?
Couple those with the fact that the Chicago Bears don't have a first round draft pick until the Mayan calendar ends and you'll have to forgive me if I decide to spend Saturday on the golf course (a newbie to the sport still trying to break the vaunted 100 mark).
This draft has no juice. Not for this league. Just read Vic Carucci's wonderful NFL.com piece, asserting that teams have become horrified of first round selections because the long-term monetary risk is not worth the immediate on-field reward. And not for this team. I mean, really, can anything from this training camp make camp more exciting than its already going to be?
The names of the players the Bears select will be significantly less important than the positions. It'll tell us where the organization has targeted as areas that require competition - as if we don't already know them. I'd be shocked (very shocked) if a single player the team takes becomes a starter in 2009. And that makes draft weekend a bit anti-climactic.
So I'm not going to get excited as the clock ticks down on each Bears selection. I'm going to fight for a 99 at Shawnee in the Poconos by eliminating terrible second shots from the fairway. I'll keep my eyes on what's happening and weigh-in should something of interest take place. But I'm not worried about it. Because with the 18th pick on Saturday afternoon, the Chicago Bears have already selected the first franchise quarterback in franchise history. And I have a jersey to order.

A few small peices could mean great things this season with the schedule they have.

#5 BDG said . . .Yeah, first of all, we have no first round pick, so, none of the top guys are that interesting to me, because I know they have no chance of landing in Chi.
Second, with Angelo making the picks, our best player from this draft will probably come in the fourth round... he probably plays defense, and I'm sure I've never heard of him.
But I do admit to checking mock drafts all day long. BTW, to save you guys the trouble of looking... pretty much every mock every where has us taking the best WR on the board at #49. But, about 80% of the mocks also have 6-7 WR's off the board by the time we hit the clock... so were taking Massaqoui or Inglesias in most mocks. Some have Robiskie falling to us.
I have spent a good deal of time looking into the top 8 or 9 WR's in the draft, and I now feel like we are going to take a Safety. It looks like we will have the choice of the 7th best WR or the 2nd best Safety. And since they are both needs, I think we get ourselves a good safety.
If you want to check some mocks, this is my favorite database:

#6 Phantom One said . . .I have to disagree completely. I love draft weekend. I don't care that we don't have a 1st round pick. We have an improvement at QB that makes it worth it. We have a lot of picks still and I can't wait to see who we land. I love getting excited about the potential future players to don the Orange and Navy. I think it is very feasible to get at least one starter maybe 2 and some real competition at other spots and for the ST's. So I say bring on the draft. I've decided for me personally I'm hoping for Rashad Johnson, with pick #49, but there should be plenty of big time talent available with our first pick
My runner up choices in order would be 1. Robiskie 2. Massaquia 3. Iglesias. This is who I believe we have a legitimate shot at with pick #49 Ofcourse there could be someone I would rather have if they were to fall Michael Johnson?April 20, 2009
#7 Kidron Music said . . .I think OG Duke Robinson or OG Herman Johnson could start in front of Roberto Garza in a heartbeat, and either would improve our ground game. I would welcome this move, but I do not think it will happen if we don't make a move prior to the draft with respect to a WR...

I think I'm hoping for Rashad as well. That's assuming Delmas would be off the board. I think Rashad is a ball hawk and would improve our team.
If it comes down to Rashad or Robiskie, I'll have a hard time choosing. I think Robiskie could help sooner, but I'm not sure he has as high of a ceiling. I think I see Robiskie as a solid WR, but not a stud. Kind of like a Bobby Engram type of career. He'll probably be in the league for a long time, with no pro-bowls.
I think Rashad might have a real impact in a few years, and I love the fact that he openly wants to play in Chicago. I like his game and his attitude.

He intercepts five passes, he breaks up 11 passes, he recovers a fumble and he forces a fumble. Johnson earns first team All-SEC honors in 2008.Height-Weight-Speed 4
Adequate height, bulk and top-end speed.Durability 3
2006: Misses the final two games of the season with an ankle injuryCharacter 3
Former walk on that was named a team captain in 2007. Earned University of Alabama's Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2007. Shared the 2008 Mal Moore Leadership Award with center Antoine Caldwell for his performance during spring practices. However, charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly knocking down a security guard at a Tuscaloosa bar early in the morning of February 25, 2008. Released on $500 bond and criminal charges will be dropped if Johnson meets the requirements of a plea bargain, which included community service and a public apology.
Defensive Safety specific Traits
Recognition Skills/Toughness 2
Reads keys and locates the ball quickly. Does an excellent job of reading quarterbacks' eyes and routes. Fills hard when reads run but doesn't have a lot of experience lining up in the box and upper body strength is just adequate.Closing Burst 3
Much better closing burst than 40-time indicates, tracks the ball well and capable of making up a lot of ground when the ball is in the air but doesn't always take sound angles to the ball after the catch and can create seam for receiver to break long run. (see first quarter of 2008 Clemson game)Fluidity 3
Doesn't sink hips low enough and occasionally a quarter-count late coming transitioning out of backpedal as a result. Does not have a great deal of experience in man-to-man coverage and tight ends are going to give him problems because of size. However, has quick feet and opens hips fairly well. Covers a lot of ground when asked to play a centerfielder-type role.Ball Skills 3
Aggressive and not afraid to jump routes. Times jumps well and can catch the ball at its highest point but occasionally drops pass should catch. (see first quarter of the 2008 Clemson game)Run Support 3
Frequently lined up at the high point and run support usually secondary concern as a result but willing run stopper that flies to the ball when reads run. Adequate tackler that can latch on and wrestle ball carriers to the ground but doesn't always take sound pursuit angles and has some problems wrapping up when doesn't get into sound position. Can get engulfed and does not project as an in-the-box safety in the NFL.April 20, 2009

Overall Football Traits
Production 2
Delmas was a four-year starter and earned all-MAC honors three of those seasons. 2008: Started all 13 games and finished with 111 tackles, including 3.5 TFL. Recorded four of 12 career interceptions as a senior.Height-Weight-Speed 4
Is a bit undersized. Adequate height and below average bulk. Straight-line speed is a little bit better than the average of all DS's in this class but still not ideal considering his size.Durability 3
Did not miss a game as a senior. However, he missed four games due to injuries during 2006 (ankle) and 2007 (concussion) seasons combined. Also lacks ideal bulk and throws his body around, which creates some long-term concern in the NFL.Character 1
No off-the-field issues. A natural leader. Named team captain as a senior. Plays the game with passion and displays an excellent work ethic.
Defensive Safety specific TraitsRecognition Skills/Toughness 1
Great recognition skills. Will diagnose plays faster than most young safeties. Not afraid to take on bigger blockers and ball carriers. Feisty and aggressive. Plays much bigger than measurables indicate. A natural playmaker in run support and in coverage. Great example of instincts and toughness is on 1st-and-10 play with 13:37 remaining in first quarter of 2008 Nebraska game, when he diagnoses the play quicker than any other defender and looks like he's shot out of a cannon as he flies upfield to make the tackle.Closing Burst 2
Closing burst is adequate-to-good, but not elite. Closes quickly when coming forward. Doesn't make up as much ground when turning and running.Fluidity 2
Displays good balance and quick feet. Shows excellent lateral agility. Lacks elite fluidity in man-to-man coverage but is smooth, quick and instinctive to match up one-on-one versus many slot WR's in the NFL. At his best playing in space as a cover-2 and cover-3 zone safety.Ball Skills 2
Very instinctive. Times his jumps well. Knows when to go for the body and when to go for the ball. Does a good job of finding the ball over his shoulder. Shows the ability to high-point the ball.Run Support 2
Lacks ideal size and may struggle to match up inside the box in the NFL. However, he diagnoses quickly and supports hard. Not afraid to throw his body around. Harder hitter than size indicates. Solid open-field tackler. Great range in run support. Displays an excellent motor.April 20, 2009

Posted by Mike Florio on April 20, 2009, 7:32 p.m. EDTThe Jacksonville Jaguars have won the AFC South showdown for the services of veteran receiver Torry Holt.
According to Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union, the Jags and Holt agreed to a two-year deal.
Holt, 32, was a top-ten draft pick in 1999.
As Wright points out, the move doesn’t rule out receiver for the Jaguars’ first-round pick, the eighth overall in the entire draft.
The Titans also pursued Holt after he was cut last month by the Rams.

#17 Sarcastiholic said . . .The draft is definitely one of my favorite times of year. Not only am I such a big Bears fan, but I'm also a fantasy football nut. So, I really enjoy examining the players that will be coming into the league.
But, it's definitely more important to me when the Bears have a high pick. For example, I have watched a lot more film and read a lot more on Hakeem Nicks and Brian Robiskie than I have for Crabtree and Maclin.
The stakes just feel higher when we have a top pick. But I'm glad to not have a top pick, because I think Cutler is a much better alternative. Plus, the rookie pay scale is way out of line for first rounders. If it doesn't get fixed in the next CBA, I'll want to trade every 1st round pick for a proven player.
I know last year I was clamoring to trade the #14 for Anquan Boldin... man, I wish we had done that. Then we'd be looking for an OT at #49 this year, and looking forward to a super bowl caliber offense.

As far as the 49th pick in the draft, we got Matt Forte at 44, so there is hope that we will get a great player or two in this draft. I know that he may have been an anomaly, but whatever. Seems like these guys that get picked after the first round have more to prove to the world about how they think they should have been picked higher or that if they prove themselves they can get their own payday (Devin Hester).
That's what I'm hoping to get out of Bennett this season, that he thinks he should have been on the field last year and he wants to show the world.
I still marvel at the dropped passes by Davis all season long that you don't give Bennett or Rideau some time on the field to gain experience and reward lack of performance in the same way you would reward good performance, they waited too long to bench Dusty and they neglected to do the same to Davis.
I know these coaches see what they see and have their assessments of players, but don't they think that sometimes players perform better in real game time scenarios than in practices. you can't find that out until you take action, you take action based on the failings of the starters, make a point so that the so called more talented starters know they aren't secure unless they are executing consistently when it's game time and it matters in game time. Wins and losses are what matters!

Shitty opening drive, fantastic iron game, and then I 3 putt the green. There's a reason I don't play much anymore obviously. We do know that Chad is once again unhappy and even though Cincy says that they won't move him, we all know that anyone can be had for the right price. He's a quarterback's best friend, because if the ball is anywhere near him, he'll make the catch. You can't put up his reception totals and have drops. ...has thrived on being able to find weaknesses in coverages.

Angelo Talks About Cutler's Lifestyle
Posted by Mike Florio: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 3:45 PMIt's fairly well known that Bears quarterback Jay Cutler likes to frequent during the evening hours establishments that sell alcoholic beverages.
And perhaps, from time to time, he'll bend his elbow to do something other than throw a football.
G.M. Jerry Angelo was asked about Cutler's lifestyle during a Tuesday pre-draft press conference.
"When we did our research, we know he goes out, we know he does those things,'' Angelo said, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times. "We talked to our medical people, we talked to the Denver medical people. It comes with the territory. We're comfortable with it. I really can't answer it beyond that.
"I'm not going to micro-manage a person," Angelo added. "If we have to do that, that's not a good sign. Some lessons, they have to see and learn for themselves. I don't think that's a big thing at this point. It's what he does on Sunday is how we're going to evaluate him. That's the bottom line. He's got a good foundation coming in here. He's a young quarterback, he's played in this league, he's shown what he can do. He gets it. That's the biggest concern. He gets it.''
But does he really get it? Though alcohol affects people with Type 1 diabetes differently, it's surprising to us that he'd even risk compromising his health, especially when he earns his living based on the ability of his body to function at a high level.
At least they are acknowledging it and did their research. Good enough for meApril 21, 2009

Last year, Perry spent five months in a hospital after being diagnosed with the condition. This time around, he has been hospitalized for over a week.

2 of the better receivers in the last few years have come from smaller schools. Brandon Marshall (UCF I believe), Donnie Avery (Houston?), Marques Colston (Hofstra), Greg Jennings (Western Michigan), Vincent Jackson (Northern Colorado) and Nate Washington (Tiffin).
I know that there have been good players from large schools too. But I think that we would get a better player, especially at WR in the 2nd or 3rd round if the Bears look for a guy that played very well at a small school.

Regarding the non-issue of Cutler's partying, I just spoke with my brother, a 40 year old Type 1 diabetic diagnosed when he was 8 years old or so, who is in otherwise good health but also drinks his fair share. He also happens to be a PhD microbiologist. His comment was that alcohol is not "good" for anyone. That said, the principal issue regarding alcohol for diabetics is simply accounting for its caloric content. So the comment about Cutler and his profession can be made about any other NFL player who drinks. My guess is there's quite a few of those.
Non-issue.
Love the concept of the 2nd best safety over the 7th best WR - absolutely, that or a great guard. That's the way to go. Still a little surprised we weren't more interested in Holt.
I too love the draft and will be anxiously awaiting our pick, while skipping the first round entirely.
