Yea, I'm Writing About It

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 | Jeff

The Tribune picked up a story from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune regarding your favorite retired quarterback's possible return to the National Football League in his third laundry in three years. Normally I'd regard a report like this as simple media speculation, except for Favre's comments:

"Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."
Brett Favre was a somebody on the football field, even when he was throwing away the Jets' season in 2008. When somebodies retire, specifically pseudo-greats like Favre, what keeps them alive is the organization wherein they found greatness. Paul O'Neill sits in the Yankee broadcast booth. Nolan Ryan is president of the Texas Rangers. And every NBA legend knows that their appearance at a home game will yield a rousing standing ovation. Men like this are defined by the games they play. Everything else is secondary.

Favre doesn't have that. In fact he has the opposite of that. Now he finds himself in an athletic purgatory; trapped between the legacies of former successes and recent ineptitude. (Though I would argue that most of those successes came with their share of ineptitude.) Does Minnesota have faith in the Tarvaris/Sage combo? Does Dan Snyder believe one year of Favre is worth more than one of Jason Campbell? Does Josh McD try to rescue an awful off-season with Captain Wrangler? All I know is that Favre is back. (This means that if you value your sanity you should turn off ESPN now and leave it off until September.)

And I understand that some will say, "Stop writing about Favre." I say, "Shut up." Brett Favre is the number one villain of the Chicago Bears for the last two decades and if this were DaSupermanBlog and Lex Luther were planning a comeback, we'd certainly cover it. Plus, having Favre return and play for the Vikings would have a two-pronged, positive effect at Halas Hall. He stinks, so we'd get to beat the division champ twice. We'd also get to watch #4, in purple, stand on the other side of the field at Lambeau. A poetic image to be cherished for all time.

This would be great if it happened. Minny would become a media frenzy and we know what the media can do to a team during the season - just look into Dallas' & NY Jets seasons from a year ago.

Can you imagine Geek Squad Leader Childress having to address the media hype surrounding Favre's return day in and day out. This event would pretty much seal the division for Chicago.

Look Favre was a great QB at one time, problem is that time is well past. 2007 yah he had a nice lil resurrgence, great for him, he should of left then. 05 he was pathetic, 06 not much better, 08 average; whether he knows it or not, he is done. Minn can have him but Im not sure he could handle having to compete with guys named Sage and Tarvaris for a job and I'm sure he'd have to.

The key phrase is "at this time." It's only April and the Elderly Hillbilly doesn't usually get his "itch" to play until mid-July.

The cool thing is if he did go to the Vikings, that would do him in with Packer fans who barely tolerate him after the last three seasons of summer hijinx.

For now, Packer nation is willing to (wrongly) lay the blame at the feet of Ted Thompson. But if #4 pulls a fast one and suits up in Purple, his name is mud up here in Cheeseland.

One more stupid ass pass intercepted when his team needed him most; one more late season collapse, one more error in judgement. I hope the ass is self-absorbed and arrogant enough to get up again.

It's fair game for a topic, Jeff. It's a year late, but this situation is EXACTLY what Diva Favre was trying to force the Packers into last year, never thinking they would call his bluff and pay him to hold a clip board, if necessary, rather than let him be the last piece of the puzzle for a division rival (A concept that STILL completely eludes his fan club, er, ESPN). As I said a year ago, I'll believe he's retired when he doesn't line up under center come September.

If I'm the Vikings, I have my lips puckered and ready to kiss Brett's butt any way he wants it kissed if he'll come play in the Metrodome.

I hope he can resist the urge.

Just say Ted Phillips speak @ a networking event. First Slide: Jay Cutler. (Applause) He kind of went over the Bears marketing and long-term plans from when he started 10 years ago, and looking forward into the future. Smart guy. Saw a yet-to-be released Bears highlight video as part of his Powerpoint presentation too.

Brett Favre is not that great. Trent Dilfer won 1 Superbowl too. So what? He constantly put his desire to heave passes down the field ahead of taking what the defense gave him and trying to actually win games. Constantly tried to do too much, and the national media never stopped humping his leg, for whatever reason. I don't ever want to hear about him ever again... until he's in the broadcast booth (god forbid) or the inevitable HOF induction.

In San Diego for the NFL owners meetings, Angelo attended a workout the Bears had set up with Louis.

“He ran a 4.75 at around 300 pounds,” Angelo said. “I’ve never seen a guy that big since (former NFL offensive lineman) Randall McDaniel run that fast, and when he ran that fast, he was about 275 pounds.

“[Louis] has some special traits. We even threw passes out of the fullback position just to give him a look there. He’s a pretty good athlete, so we said with that versatility in the seventh round, why not?”

Looks like our boy Louis isn't going to be a Fullback or Tight End. The Bears gave their draft picks numbers today. He's listed as a Guard:

Louis 60
Afalava 46
Freeman 58
Gilbert 73
Inglesias 17
Kinder 83
Jackass 13 (You're welcome, Jeff)
Melton 69
Moore 30

Doesn't mean they won't use him as a FB or TE in certain plays, but right now it looks like he's destined to be a backup lineman.

05 and 06 Favre was bad because the Packers were in complete rebuilding mode.

Hard to believe how much crap one guy gets when he only had 1 losing season in 16 years. He is old but he can still be a threat. As a Bears fan I would not want Favre on the Vikings when they are already pretty stacked minus the Q.B. spot.

I agree Rob C. Farve to the Queens makes me sick to think about. His old QB coach is there. He would pick up the offense quick and with there Defense and running game/ he wouldn't have to do too much. I don't like it and I can really see this happen.I am confident that Farve would come in as a big upgrade to T-Jack and Sage. I hate the Jets for releasing him. All they had to do is hold his rights for one more year.
I think Louis being listed at guard is great. He still can be a blocking TE and occasional FB plus they don't have to carry 4 "TE's" on the roster because there is no way they can give up on Kellen Davis. I think Davis steps in for Dez next year.
#23 I don't think it is too far fetched to imagine Louis and Melton in the same back field. The talent and history is there. I doubt we would see it much but 2-4 times during the season is possible if they both make the team.
Transplant- curious how Philips felt the plan has evolved? Did he say if it was on target so far from when he got here?

How can u say the ViQueers are stacked? How in the fuck is there such a fucking love affair with these assholes? Lets examine

1. Obvious lack of QB
2. No threat of a passing game
3. Marginal WR's (Berrian is a $40 million wide out w/o a 1000 yd season or a Pro Bowl to his name and dont even mention that clown Bobby Wade...what a joke)
4. Suspect pass defense

lets recap.....they have half of an offense and half of a defense. HOW THE FUCK DOES EQUAL "STACKED"??????

Not trying to rag on you #26, more or less just taking jabs at the media's lovefest with them. Let them have Favre . He'll look just like all those other pussies in purple. Bear Down !

They have the best running back in football right now, led the league in rushing. They have a great offensive line (considering their q.b.'s are terrible and teams stack up against the run)( I think Hunchinson is great at G and Seattle's running game never recovered after he left after their super bowl appearance), their middle linebacker had more tackles than Lance Briggs and is a rising star out of Iowa and I think they have one of the top defensive lines in the league with the top 5 Sackman Jared Allen ( 3 sacks against bears if you recall in 1 game last year and led league the previous year in sacks with K.C. and the Williams tackles. They added Percy Harvin who could be great out of Florida and have Berrian who is better than anyone the bears have at w.r. (hoping Hester lights up this year). They are missing a q.b. and won't go anywhere without one. Vikes never won a superbowl ,what do they have to lose? I don't think they are super stacked like some other teams but they do have a lot of things going on for them. They will go nowhere with their current q.b's which is fine with me.

I certainly agree Berrian isnt worth $40 mil but he is a decent receiver who did alright for them last season. Wade, along with Gage, will always be ex-Bears i regard with scorn but he has managed to be somewhat competent if thoroughly unexciting receiver and Visconte Shianthoe or whatever his name is was a real surprise last season.

Couple that with a great line and an explosive running game (even with APs fumbles) and i really do think that offense is just lacking a tolerable QB to be quite dangerous. And that doesnt include Harvin.

And even when inconsistent and suffering under the stewardship of T-Jack and Ferrotte they have been able to move the ball all over us the last two years.

I dont fear them but they shouldnt be taken lightly.

Plane Flies From Minneapolis To Hattiesburg, And Back Again
Posted by Mike Florio on April 29, 2009, 10:59 p.m.

It probably means nothing.

But, let’s face it, Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport is hardly a major hub of transportation.

Only five flights arrived there today, and only six departed.

One of the arrivals came from Minneapolis, and one of the departures headed back there.

The plane from Minneapolis arrived at 9:11 a.m. local time, and left at 4:14 p.m. local time.

It probably has nothing to do with one of the more famous residents of Hattiesburg. After all, he’s retired from playing football, and he has no intention of coming back.

Favre said so himself. “It’s all rumor. [There’s] no reason for it.”

Oh, wait. That was last year, when Favre shot down in early July talk that he wanted to come back.

Since he was telling the truth then, he’s surely telling the truth now.

Brett Favre gives the Vikings a better chance to win than Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels.

And he'll look a hell of a lot better behind that O-Line and having APete, Harvin, Chester Taylor and Berrian doesn't exactly hurt either.

I'm not counting on him crapping the bed just yet.

Ghost- numbers don't seem to mean a whole lot anymore. Louis is listed on the roster as a TE. A lineman's number may be for added effect in using him as a pass receiver. Plus look at Devin.. so since he's 23 I guess he won't be playing any receiver just corner.

#46 Spawn of Ditka said . . .

Dress that fossil up in purple and bring him on!!! He hasn't been a real problem for the Bears since Lovie's been here, anyway. We have 10 years or so of beatings to hand him for past transgressions. And, the distractions that this would bring to the ViFags would be fantastic. Go Bears!!!

April 30, 2009

#47 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Who cares if Favre comes back or not, honestly. When is the last time he was really good back there, 04?. He will be 40 this year and hasn't been great in 5 years, plus he really started to see some injury issues and the season got a little long for him last year.
So with all of that if you are Minnesota and you are trying to get a hold on your one big weakness at QB, you brought in a guy you like in Sage to compete with a guy you still have some hope for in Tarvaris and now you're going to bring in a washed up old guy who demands to start without competition because of the name on his jersey and who probably won't last the season and if he does no more than that? It would be a step back for Minnesota at this point. The only place I would think he may work out would be Detroit, Could maybe steer the ship long enough and help Stafford out but I think I'd rather have Culpepper there if I were them.

Well, actually numbers mean more now than ever before. You're right, Devin Hester is misnumbered, but that's because he was drafted as a Corner and shifted to Wide Reciever after he had already attained superstardom. He's one of only two players in the league with "misnumbered" jersies. The other being Dallas Clark who was given 44 even though numbers in the 80s were available.

Actually, Lance Louis is listed on the official roster as a Guard.

But you're right. I mean, they're not going to let talent like that go to waste. Fucking 303 pound guy who ran the 40 in 4.72. Shit yeah, use him as a short yardage fullback and TE. And he's not the Fridge incarnate, because he might actually have talent.

Yah Clarke's number always bothers me, though he is kind of short for a TE I think so it doesn't look all that out of place. I know it's a legal one but LBs numbered in the 90s like Hillenmeyer bug me too. I just like the 50s for em I guess.

I think the Cuntler trade could become Meier 2 trade. Denver raped your sorry asses.

My perdiction Farve goes to Minnesota. He won't have to throw alot like he did with the NYJ last year.

Dave - So in Minnesota Favre would have a better RB duo than he had in 08. The Jets RB duo of Washington and Jones actually accounted for 23 TDs while Peterson and Taylor only compiled 16. Adrian had a lot of yards but unfortunately the yards don't convert to points.

And the addition of a slashback who has never caught an nfl pass isn't a threat, he probably wouldn't start except for the fact that all he has to do is beat out some old Bear hand me down receivers. And as far as who he'd have to throw to, getting used to Berrian and Gage after Cothery and Coles and Jennings and Driver would be tough to do also.

I think some Bear fans (myself included) have a brief panic attack when we hear the name Farve just because he friggin owned us for so many years, but that was a long, long, long time ago. He's a shell of his former self. Minny fans should be the ones having the panic attacks.

Yeah, an hour wasn't enough. I made it until about 27 seconds left in the 3rd OT. Thank god for Sportscenter.

Go Bulls!

What do you guys think about picking up Edge as a back-up RB? He is a bit past his prime but is good with less playing time. He would be great to split some time with Forte.

No room for Edgerrin at the inn, I'm afraid...

KJones re-signing put the ixnay on bringing in another veteran RB, particularly with Wolfe and the Original AP on the roster.

Yeah no room for the EDGE I'd rather keep K.J. I think he will do good with more reps this year.
Another good try out guy you should like zmac
MAURICE COVINGTON WR Virginia
Height: 6-4 Weight: 225
Has the size to push Rideau. He's slow though.
Not that we have room for him but a great FB option would be JORVORSKIE LANE Tex. A&M
MEASURABLES
Height: 5-11 Weight: 295
40-yard dash: 4.71
Was a TB most of his career very productive

Ohio State fullback Brandon Smith- This kid is trying out and at least looks like a damn good athlete.
I hope somebody can push McKie. Still like the Cal kid but I would take anyone young if they can earn it

I would rather K. Jones not get any carries haha, but I get that there is no room for Edge. I think Edge will do well as a secondary back. His body cant take the toll of a full season anymore, but he still has it in limited action.

Ya, I saw Covington... dunno how I feel about him. I'd rather Riddeau just step it up.

Wow! Who is this Dave guy? Lonely, clearly, but for someone who hates the Bears as much as he does he does spend a lot of time on a Bears site. Here's the skinny, as the kids say these days, we are the team to beat. We are the team to beat. We are the team to beat. Hey Dave, we are the team to beat. :-)

Rideau has earned the chance, and god help me, I think he will do a half decent job. I have faith. Admittedly blind faith, but faith nonetheless.

Nice rookie camp updates on the Trib website

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/huddleup/rookie-mini-camp/

I hope that if Covington and Kinder don't make the team, they at least keep them on the practice squad. We know what Rashied is, they shoud cut him and try to develop some young receivers for once.

Covington is 6'4 and had a 40" inch vertical at his pro day... seems like a good red zone target.

Percy Harvin went to the hospital today with symptoms of severe dehydration....

What's the odds that it's just really bad cotton-mouth from the weed?

Tomorrow he's going to be rushed to a 7-11 with symptoms of severe munchies....

White sox won the series in 05 (or 04 or 06... don't even know)... but the point is..."who cared???" Thats not hypothetical; that can be answered by history. Fact is... the answer is "peasants". The cubbies coulda been 1-161 and more people would pay attention to them. You're not even in the Chi so go be a Raiders fan. When you have people mocking your nick you know you've really made it.
