I'm Stalking Anquan Boldin
Boldin showed up at Arizona's mini-camp and is faking a hamstring injury. According to head coach Ken Whisenhunt, "Hey, we know what's going on, so I'm really not going to have much to say about that." With the Cardinals having only $6.5 million in cap room, the likelihood of an extension is not good. My dream of Boldin the Bear stays alive!
Pool Jump, Tuna Melton & Marinelli
"These guys are very talented athletes," Marinelli said. "When I talk about talent, I mean short-space quickness. Then I look at them being tall and being able to bend. A guy like [Gilbert], if you can jump out of a pool, you're in pretty good shape to bend. If you can bend and your feet are quick, that means you can play with a good base. They run extremely well. They're coordinated. Now I have to coordinate them into a rush mode."
You know what I like? The last sentence. "Now I HAVE TO..." Accountability has made its way back to this coaching staff. I think it might be nice to have someone with Marinelli's intensity on the Bears' sideline.
The Sad, Sad Ballad of Brad and Brett
It has begun.
Oh, About that Announcement...
I'm not being coy or anything. I just have to wait until some details get hammered out before I can post things officially on here. But our little site is moving up in the world.

i think the cardinals wanted too much for him on draft day. this is a player who almost died on the field last year and i guarantee he won't play a down until he's traded and/or signs a new deal. they'll have no choice.

It is not how much the Cards are asking that scares JA, it is how much Boldin is asking on a new deal that has JA turning his nose.
Boldin wants $9 mil a year. Honestly, is he worth it? I don't think so, and I don't see the Bears overpaying for him.

I know he is a stud - but he is not in Fitzgerald's league.

#16 Fresno,CA BEAR FAN said . . .Boldin is not in Fitzgerald's league, but he is better than Berrian. And because the nfl is a business he will get 9mill a year. I also wouldn't surprise me if JA is considering some sort of package to entice Boldin.
Let me be the first to say.. Jeff I really like this site and am hoping that you are not planning on "selling out" to some big 'ol company that wants to make all sorts of changes to your blog. Its perfect- its simple- read then post. Please dont give in to corporate bastards that will want all your fans to re-register and get bulk e-mail for the next 100 years. #18 Duff Diggler said . . .enderwiggin that's a very valid point. I hope it doesn't change the format too much. That being said Jeff I want to thank you for making this site for all of us Bear fans. I know some people probably get sick of me on here lately because I post so much but it's just because I care so much about the Bears and love the debates. What ever the news is I have faith that Jeff will look out for what's best for us and the what makes this site great. Thanks again Jeff.
Now back to disagreeing with you lol. I don't think Boldin is worth 9 million a year. I think he is a great player but he never has been a fast player (4.7 40 at his combine), and he is tough as nails. This is the reason I wouldn't pay him that much. He is getting older now (29 this season) and he will be losing what little speed he does have very fast when it starts to happen and with him being so tough he takes a pounding. He has only played 16 games 2x's out of 6 in his career. He is built and plays more like a running back. Usually they die out around 30 yrs old. He has been in a very special offense that produces numbers with a amazing wr opposite him for the last 5 yrs. Even before Warner they were trailing alot of games so they passed a ton improving his numbers. Also I would rather save the money for a bigger wr with more speed that can win jump balls and stretch the field. Boldin is more possession that breaks plays with yac, we have young possession options. Doubt they will ever get the yac Boldin does but we need another type of wr altogether IMO.
The only way I would want them to get Boldin is for a very small trade package and a incentative laden contract that we can get out from under if he gets hurt. I don't see either of those happening. I would be more intrigued by Braylon Edwards because he IS the perfect compliment size and speed wise to what we have at wr, but with his drops he wants too much money too.May 3, 2009
#19 MikeBrownhadaPosse said . . .I'm kinda jes vomitting issues here so bare with me....
Jeff- pullin a JA... "i can't talk about a player (changes to the site) who's under contract. blah, blah, blah...." lol
But seriously, great point. don't let it change too much. just allow us to post pics, actual vids, and put me on the payroll. Another good idea would be to give us user id/passwords (w/o the junk mail shite) so as to eliminate others posting as others. and put me on the payroll.
Boldin is in the Ocho Cinco boat. I think he's stubborn enough to hold out indef principle wise, but i think he loves foosball too much to jes watch it on tv for a year. $ wise, how bad would signing him for 9M fuck us in cutler/cap $ next year??? and what do we give up? next years 2nd, and who/what? and nobody fucking say vasher! if that's what ur thinking, ur an idiot. as hurt and shitty he has been recently, we'd have better value offering a 2nd, a sham-wow, and a snuggie. i'm not saying he isn't good, or can't return to form. i'm jes sayin he's pretty shitty trade bait....
the Cardinals are such a shitty organization. all their players talk shit about their studs never getting paid. I wouldnt be surprized if Moose winds up there bcuz thats where ALL players go to die. ask emmitt and edge...
I'm all for Favre to Minny! He'll help our secondary bouce back.
btw, percy harvin is gonna LOVE that Cali chronic!

#20 The Ghost of Halas said . . .If we sign Boldin, that's the FIRST jersey I buy this year.
The kid is a fighter, runs D backs over, and is worth a renegotiation on his contract if the Bears get him. Anybody who's back playing a month after having his skull taken apart and put back together is Bears-tough.
He definitely has 4 more years in him at a high level b/c his game isn't predicated on speed or hops...just great hands and toughness. That said, I don't see it happening w/o some freakish luck, but with Jeff on the case, I will not be -too- surprised.
GFG do I want a DaBearsBlog t-shirt for Christmas. You make 'em, I'll buy one.

#21 Foxtro Tango Packers said . . .I'm liking a lot of what's coming out of Rod Marinelli's mouth.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/mulligan/1555625,CST-SPT-mully03.article
I met the man once when I was still coaching and he was working at USC. I liked him. Always thought he got a god damned raw deal in Detroit. I really think our Defensive Line is in very good shape.
Call me crazy or senile but I honest-to-god think that the Chicago Bears are going to make a Super Bowl run in the next two years. I don't mean a piece of trash 9-7 Arizona Cardinals-style Super Bowl run, but a real 2006-style run. Two years. The frame is there. The offense is there. The D-Line is almost there. The Linebacking corps isn't washed up. There's good stuff there.
Remember, ladies and gents, it's Packer Week!

#23 Phantom One said . . .While I love the way Boldin plays, I have a feeling that whoever coughs up the coin to pay him will be paying for diminishing returns. I mean jesus, he had his face screwed back together. He did get back on the field the the same year, to help them make their SB run; according to Bears philosophy, that would warrant a significant pay increase (pay your own).
The fact that the Cardinals haven't paid him is embarrassing. They're the cheapest franchise in the whole league, hands down.

#29 The Ghost of Halas said . . .I'm also excited about the new stuff - I've been on here less than a year, but I check it every day (or a few times a day) now. Props for that, jeff.
With regard to Boldin - I think that he's going to force his way out of there. I also think that JA is willing (and able) to trade for him AND give him the money. At least, he was on draft day - I don't see why that changes now. The only problem in this scenario is another team with a little more to offer stepping in and snatching him.
Just for fun - It's well known that Boldin's a warm weather guy - grew up in FL, went to FSU, played for AZ... he's expressed interest in being traded to a warm-weather team (perhaps in FL). What if the Cards decided to mess with him and ship him over to one of the most bitterly cold/windy cities in the NFL today: CHICAGO!! I would laugh. And then pee my pants because I just realized We're going to have Jay Cutler throwing to Hester and Boldin.

#32 Who's Laughing Now said . . .Johnny chitown, I would like the Bears to at least explore the idea of using Lance Louis or Henry Melton as blocking FBs on short yardage situations to blow up opposing defenses. I know the Bears like McKie for his toughness and veteran leadership, but he seemed to take a big step backwards last year. I would like to see some fresh blood at a position which seems to accumulate wear and tear much more quickly than some other positions. The Bears have some very athletic big guys who should excel at special teams because of their rare combination of speed and strength. If they could somehow find a way to utilize these guys on offense to really benefit Cutler and Forte, opposing defenses better watch out.
I can't say I'm sold on Marinellit yet, mostly because I don't like this team being associated with losing (0-16?), but I think it's going to be hard for him to fail as the defensive line coach in Chicago. The guy has Alex Brown, the 3 down lineman, Ogunleye and Anderson who are both playing for a contract and new money, Tommie Harris, along with fresh blood in Gilbert and Melton, not to mention Izzy and Dusty. If Hot Rod can't get it done with these guys, the guy is outta here.
There have been a lot of changes in our Norris division, it should be interesting to see who comes out this season and establishes themselves as the class of the division.
Bear down people.

#35 BDG said . . .Accountability? Bwahahahaha! Then why am I still the defensive coordinator?
May 4, 2009
#36 MikeBrownhadaPosse said . . .#32- yes I would rather pay Burress then I would pay for Boldin. With the cost of picks and to sign him to a long term deal, I think it would benefit the Bears greater in the long run to take a chance on Burress who would be much cheaper, no picks, and would be able to protect ourselves by not giving big bunch of guaranteed money. Even if we had to wait to get him till week 8 or something for his jail term/ suspension to be over. He is the TYPE of wr that would make our offense excell. He would give us the jump ball opposite Olsen, and the deep threat opposite Hester. He would let our draft picks (Bennett, Iglesias)grow in the possession role. That's my Opinion. Believe me I think Boldin is a great player and I love his toughness I just don't think he is the right choice for this team going forward. I certainly won't be mad if they do get him.

#38 CSauce said . . .Signing Burress is absolutely the dumbest move any team can make right now. What good it it to sign a guy who's going to be rotting away in prison? On top of that, the suspension from the league. Damn, by the time he available to catch another pass, Bennett and Iglesias will be top receivers in the game.
Let's recap: Signing Burress and him sitting in prison= VERY BAD!!
Trading for Boldin and having to sign him for 9 million/year and Jay having a pro bowl receiver to pass to=VERY,VERY, GOOD!!
May 4, 2009
#39 BDG said . . .#30 - great artice you pulled up there. I had no idea it was the money needed to SIGN Boldin that was keeping JA from pulling the trigger. Go Figure - I thought the new (post-Cutler) JA would go for it.
Thinking ahead, here are some names of supposed 2010 Free Agent WRs I found online. Heading the list are (in no particular order): BRANDON MARSHALL, Braylon Edwards, Roddy White, Larry Fitzgerald (? no way AZ lets him go), and Roy Williams. We don't have a 1st-rounder again, so our only real hope is free agency unless one of our guys takes a huge step forward this year.
We've got a quarterback... who's he going to throw to?
May 4, 2009
#40 MikeBrownhadaPosse said . . .That's why I said we may have to wait to week 8. Paying 9 million a year for 4 years to a wr that may get broken or not excel with out the elite offense and wr opposite him could set us back 4 years at the position. If they couldn't get Burress for the right money and time (jail/suspension) I think they should go with what we got or sign a short term vet like D.J. Hackett, Matt Jones, or Amani Toomer for veteran min. We have a lot of areas we need to improve or make sure they are improved (S's. LB's,Cb's.De's) before we can take chances like that kind of money for Boldin.

#41 Foxtro Tango Packers said . . .Well, it's going to be awful tough for Plex to contribute in a meaningful way for the last half of the season...he is not a Randy Moss-esque freak that could come in and just run go-routes all day. He's going to have to pick up the offense somewhere along the line and get his timing down with whichever QB he ends up lining up next to. I just don't see that happening in this lifetime. There's not much precedence for it in recent Bears history (signing someone headed to the hoosegow or with pending league suspension...helloooo Tank!).

#42 Urlacher FTW said . . .I'm still definitely on the Matt Jones train, he's a big enough target. i dont think he's phenomenal, so much as available, and affordable.
May 4, 2009
Before you get too excited about 2010 free agents just remember that it is an uncapped year which greatly restricts UFA availability; 6 years or less in the NFL do not get an option to be UFA. For instance with us Mark Anderson falls into this, so we could offer him 2 mil a year and noone can take him with out giving us a 1st and a 3rd.. pretty hefty.
