Cutler Learning Offense

Thursday, May 7, 2009 | Jeff

I logged on DaSite this morning to the arousing headline, "New quarterback Cutler gaining firm grasp of Bears offense." This begs a second question: "What's he going to do tomorrow?"

I'm going to make it easy on Captain Cutler by providing a series of instructions that should make the transition seamless.

1. On second/third/fourth and short situations, Ron Turner is going to ask you to hand the football to your fullback. You should not do this. Ever.

2. Sometimes the receivers don't catch the ball, even when you throw it well. Especially Rashied Davis. I'm not sure what the other receivers will do because, other than Devin Hester, none of them have ever caught a pass in the league. Don't get down. We'll get you better ones in time.

3. When you see that same Mr. Hester running a go route downfield, throw the football. If he doesn't catch it, he'll draw a flag from a terrified corner/safety who has never seen a player run that fast. (On a similar note, Turner's going to want you to throw this dopey Hester screen all the time. You should not do this. Ever.)

4. Throw the ball to Greg Olsen all the time. He's a 90-catch talent coming off a 54-catch season and there's neither a linebacker nor a safety in the league that can cover him man-to-man. (Turner may require you throw an endzone fade to Mr. Olsen. You should not do this. Ever.)

5. This is going to be a strange experience for both of us, Jay. We're not used to having an elite-level quarterback and you're not used to playing outside the shadow of former quarterbacking glory. You're going to want to impress us. That's fine. But the most important thing to Chicago Bears fans is winning ballgames. 4,000 yards would be wonderful. Pro Bowls, perfecting ratings, all that stuff. Wonderful. But if you win ballgames, specifically the one at the end of the season, you become immortal in one of America's greatest cities. You stop paying for things. You open steak restaurants. If you win the one at the end of the season, you become Chicago Bears football.

Site Note: We're being told the transition to ChicagoNow will be happening soon.

It's starting to feel real and not like a dream anymore. Screw baseball lets start the season right now. May pre-season sounds great to me.

I'd like a vet presence (I'm thinking Toomer a bit lately) to give Cutler someone who is a seasoned pro at the position. I don't want them long term, just a year or two until our younguns can make it around

I can't remember who keeps saying Matt Jones but I think I have to agree. Bring that coke fiend in here and let him produce in the red zone with G-Olsen. I don't think Amani "it's not a" Toomer will help this team at all. All he's going to do is keep a younger player from getting experience. He's an old player with little upside at this point. At least with Matt Jones you're getting a big young player with a lot of potential.

Love the post.

I don't know why, but I'm still more worried about our defensive backfield. Sure a shiny new reciever is nice, but aren't we a team that prides itself on a solid defense?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with trying the endzone fade to Olsen. The main reason it never worked was because Orton was terrible at making that throw. Olsen was in position to make the catch more often than not but the throw was never right. It could be a great option if Cutler can make time & position the ball right.

Excellent post Jeff. I loved #1, god I hope we dont have to endure another season of that stupid play calling on short yardage downs, I still get nightmares of that Carolina game in the beginning of '08.

As for Grossman, he would not be a bad backup option for this team. The pressure is off him at this point he could be serviceable in that type of situation. If is he is not signed by end of June why not invite him to camp nothing to really lose.

I like Matt Jones, have since the day they cut him. He is just too big and too fast to not take a shot on. It's not like it would cost us a lot at this point. No one is working him out and it is May, he would be cheap. At the very least he has good hands and would be an upgrade over Davis. I would feel better having a single true WR on the team that caught an NFL pass last year, which at this time we don't.

Toomer.. ehh I would rather have Bennett, Iglesias, or Rideau out there getting reps and getting beter than someone who has nothing left in the tank. Once Plax went out of the lineup, Toomer fell off the planet - in it's last 4 games including the playoff game the Giants didn't throw a single TD to a WR. Harrison and Toomer are being overlooked for the same reason that Favre should be, too old and would only retard the growth of a young player and not provide big numbers in the process.

May 7, 2009

#12 Rancid said . . .

Ok. No one else likes Toomer. I still do. He's no #1, and I agree that IF Bennett or Iglesias can play a competent #2 then I don't want him either. The fact is, barring some trade we will not have a #1 WR this year. There are no #1 on the FA market. We will have a combo of #2's, slots, and unknown quantities. We don't have a #1. I love Hesters progression at WR and think he will get there and I for one am impressed that this coaching staff could see that and actually made a good move. BUT he's not a number one yet. So we don't have one. Hopefully we do after the start of the season but at this point I don't think we do.

May 7, 2009

#13 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Actually I guess Jones isn't a true WR either. He was a college QB who just got stuck at WR because he was 6'6" 242 and ran a 4.4 40. We don't need another project at WR, I am officially off the Jones bandwagon, we may have to go with what we have :(

May 7, 2009

#14 Urlacher FTW said . . .

Now this is strictly based on speculation from reading different sources.. but.
Larry on dasite said Iglesias is only being taught the outside receiver routes. Bennett learned them all, and Hester is the concensus no 1 outside WR.

So to me that would mean our current wideout starters are:
1. Hester - Knox (stretch)
2. Iglesias - Rideaux (possesion)
3. Bennett - Davis/Kinder (slot)

Yes, Iknow the depth chart won't be decided until pre-season, just from what I read that's what I would expect it to look like.

I like Jones, think he's got talent, but the Bears get rid of issue guys, they don't take them on. If they draft them personally, they get a few extra chances before they get the boot. (Tank, Benson) but the latest version of the brain trust doesn't pick up guys with question marks. For that reason I don't see Jones happening.

Don't forget, Hester will be able to run down what Cutler throws. Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal were products of Cutler's arm and precision. Having a running game, a defense and special teams will show just how elite Cutler truly is.

May 7, 2009

#28 BDG said . . .

I think we keep the TE fade also way too much potential there with Olsen. I also think the WR screen to Hester can be very effective if used OCCASIONALLY instead of 4x's a game. With Cutler's quick release and arm strength he can get the ball to Hester that much quicker so he can do something with it instead of having the defense on him as soon as he catches it. When I was watching Cutler throw on the Bears video that was the first thing I thought about. They can't use it so often though, have to have an element of surprise to it. Maybe Brandon Lloyd staying unsigned will be the best thing for us. We can give all the guys we have every chance to prove they can do it and if they can't we can sign him back for cheap and he knows the system. I just hope he stays unsigned. Booker too I guess as scary as that is. I don't understand the delay to sign another WR if they are going to. It seems like they should get them the play book and some throws from Cutler if it was going to happen, so now I'm doubting it.

Jeff - loved that post! Hilarious! And I too agree about killing the TE fade - that play seems to have the same probability of success as an onsides kick - maybe one out of four or five. It sounds simple but everything has to go just right and when the defender knows its coming he can disrupt it too easily.

What I may disagree on is the fullback hand-off - with our BRAND NEW OFFENSIVE LINE and HENRY MELTON or LANCE LOUIS carrying, might be a different thing altogether!

Tucson Albert, that was just a killer line! If you made that up you're a pure genius!

notes on the fade:

1. you should never run it around the goal with a mobile quarterback.

2. you should only run it when the player on the outside has superior leaping ability or a significant height advantage.

3. we learn about jay cutler's touch but i'd prefer him dropping back, scrambling and firing the ball somewhere.

One reason to keep the fade with the mobile QB, just the slightest pump fake to the fade in the corner will open up the goal line for Cutler to Waltz on in. The point for me is with Cutler we keep EVERYTHING in the playbook. More looks harder to guess

I still really think Matt Jones is the way to go, knows routes, can catch the ball fairly well, didnt come from a high powered receiving offense per se.

he's a TE target at WR.
and he was last arrested for alcohol, which was in violation of probation, for a coke issue. so it wasn't cocaine, it was alcohol, and clearly we don't have a problem with drinkers in Chicago last i checked.

do we sign him? i doubt it.
but he's one of the best options out there remaining overs

Amani, Plax "jail time" Burress, or Marvin "one knee" Harrison.

and Dave, and Anon from last post... i just can't compete with your absolute knowledge of the game, your wisdom and inteligence continues to elude me. to so repetitiously call him Cuntler, and have nothing factual to back that up... i'm just floored at your level of game smarts, i really fucking hope you are a fan of someone in the division. so come game time, when you get smoked, you can shut the fuck up when you get stomped

#39 Some kind of silly random name because it's one of the last days to pick a silly random name before said . . .

6. You will have a guy named Forte in the backfield who is a better back than you've ever played with in your life. Pull him aside the first day of camp, put your arm around him and just say, "Superbowl," because that's what the two of you can bring to Chicago together. Your arm will demand the defenses stop stacking the box against Forte. And his prowess will keep cornerbacks and cornerbacks honest. Buy Forte a Rolex. Spring for dinner for him. The two of you are going to be buddies -- good buddies -- for a long time.

7. Beat the Packers. Always. Twice a year. Save your best plays for Green Bay. Treat Packer Week like it's the Super Bowl two times a regular season. Because it is. You can even get into a shouting match with Aron Rodgers like you used to with that punk Philip Rivers for all I care. Beat the Pack into submission and say that it was all for those hard-working Grabowskis who live and die for Packer Week.

8. Get in your coaches ears right now and lobby for an No. 1 receiver. We know you've already tried to recruit Plax. That's what I'm talking about. Use whatever pull you have. Get them to trade for Boldin or sign Plax or something. Do this because you know that you're just a No. 1 reciever away from having an offense every bit as good as you had in Denver.

If I'm Ron Turner (which I am not, thank goodness), I'm sweating. This is a do or die year for him. I am on record from saying 'they fired the wrong Ron' in 2007 (thanks for noticing Shady, and recognizing that it was meant as a compliment to the work that Ron Rivera did with the defense, and a criticism of Ron Turner). I have heard many a Bear fan 'defend' the offensive play calling by saying that Turner calls the plays based upon the talent he has had to work with, in particular the QB behind center. Now the Bears have a pro bowl QB, so we will find out if the lack of offensive creativity is because of the talent on the field, or because of the play calling by RT.

It will be a fun year in the division. Let's start it up!

I am not a Ron Turner fan, but he has demonstrated in two occasions that he can be an effective coordinator with strong QB play. (Once back in 90 something with Eric Kramer at the helm, and again in 06 when Rex was playing well).

He establishes the run, and spreads the ball around the field very well. I expect great things from him this year.

I think Dave Taub has earned a promotion, and if Turner fails, I would like to see Taub take over. He has the imagination to dominate, and certainly exploits mismatches very well.

May 8, 2009

#45 Windy City Packer Fan said . . .

BDG, you are correct about Toub...and Angelo's moves have paid off in special teams. The Bears have taken guys that have a tremendous upside...if they can produce; as is evidenced by Devin Hester. With Lovie taking over the defense, I expect them to have a better showing this year than they did in the last couple of years. If Turner's offense steps it up, your Bears are a legit contender for the division title. With the absence of a QB in Minnesota, the NFC north should be won by one of the teams on Lake Michigan.

For those of you that appreciate analysis from another fan about their team...I am going on record as saying that Dom Capers is the Pack's best off-season move. His best success as come as a coordinator. Some guys are better coordinators than they are head coaches. I am looking forward to; and hoping that the Bears/Packers games this year mean something, and are well played games all the way around.

May 8, 2009

Sadly Grossman would be at least as good as the other two
QB's they have in Minny. Absolutely no reason to bring him back here. Even if he does know the offense he has proven he can't consistently run it so it's time to permanently move on from him even if that means giving an unproven Caleb Hanie the # 2 role. It's pointless to use the roster spot and practice reps for Grossman anymore.

It's my hope that it will take you a while to get it together this year making your transition to the new D so that will give us the edge over the Pack, but I think it is a very big move in the right direction for G.B. which sucks quite frankly for us. I also think Raji was the best player G.B. could have possibly got in the draft considering the new D.I'm glad they didn't get Crabtree because I think he could be the next Fitzgerald but Raji fits better anyways. I think the North as a whole got a lot better this year and will prove to be one of the best divisions in football over the next 3-5 years. Detroit included. This year however, I feel the line is at least 8.5/10, and I'm close to giving it a 9. As a former lineman I'm excited to see the names Pace, Omiyale, Kreutz, Garza, and Williams protecting cutler. Overall this is group who can bring it, with solid depth on the bench, such as Kevin Shaffer, Josh Beekeman, and Lance Louis. For the record I would like to see Shaffer on the field because he is one mean motherfucker. You need a guy like that out there.

I'm just glad that we had a fan from another team come on here and not be a douchebag. Maybe things are finally going to change and ass clowns like Dave will be few and far between. It's nice to have a conversation with another teams fans as long as their not coming on here to talk shit.

This line is a huge improvement over last years without even playing a down. There's more depth, size, and best of all we're not relying on St. Clair to come in and start. Also, if Chris Williams falls on his face we have a capable veteran back-up to fill in until he figures it out.

I can't wait to see the improvement in the offense this year. I'm not going to even mention replacing Ron Turner until I see what Cutler can do with his offense. If Cutler fails then maybe lets bring it up, but until then I think we have to give him a chance with a good quarterback. As Phantom One said in post #44 "I am not a Ron Turner fan, but he has demonstrated in two occasions that he can be an effective coordinator with strong QB play." I agree completely with this. I really think we're going to have a strong offense this year, but it's the defense I really worry about.

May 8, 2009

#62 MaddBearFan said . . .

The funny thing about this is the fact that Turner not only has a new quarterback to work with but he'll basically have to rewrite the "Pass Play" part of the playbook (since in the past, a downfield pass was no more than 20 yrds) and neither Turner or the WR's have had much experience in this new and uncharted wilderness (at least for the Bears anyway!) Hey Ron: You may have to extend the route lines on the pass play drawings a bit! I mean, go ahead and get a little "Crazy" and draw up a 25 yrd or even 30yrd long pass play. OMG! And don't worry about the extra chalk or ink usage Ron, management should be able to cover it with the savings from the Oxygen usage NOT needed by the defense since they may not have to play 45 minutes a game because of 3 and out...3 and out's!
Also the offense is going to have to be retrained into thinking that just because the quarterback was forced out of the pocket does NOT necessarily mean that the play is over. Stay with your assignments!!! Things may still happen now, unlike in the past!! This guy dos'nt have to stop and plant his right foot to throw the ball. He can do it on the run. So Matt and Greg, heads up guy's, you may see the ball coming your way on a late play a little more often this year.
Jay, this year is going to be a real learning experience for you, take advantage of the talent around you. You might not have the WR corp that you had out west, but you do have a damn good running back and tight ends to work with. And Jeff is exactly right about the the statistics thing. Looks great on paper. But it dos'nt mean shit unless there is a "W" after the equal sign.

I guess one thing about our OL i'm not sure of, is Garza. I seem to remember him making a ton of mistakes last year (and the year b4). I would rather our guards be Omiyale and Beekman. I thought Beekman did a great job last year. That being said, I don't know exactly which side i'd like him on. Either way i guess..... But for a scenario, here ya go....

LT Pace
LG Beekman
C Kruetz
RG Omiyale
RT Williams

Schaffer, Garza, etc. for depth. I really feel as though Beekman needs as much xp as possible. With kruetz getting old (and clearly deteriorating), and garza getting ready to need rides to the doctor (instead of giving them to old ppl. remember that commercial???), Beekman will replace one of them. He needs the reps....

Hey MaddBearFan, was that your first ever post? Excellent job! We have to remember that it was the same RT who had to sketch completely different plays for Rex Grossman - for him he was stretching the field every play (it seemed). Now you've got the best of Rex and Kyle combined, plus some - and the plus is the playmaking on the run, which really neither had. Kyle certainly more than Rex, but it was a Tallest Dwarf type comparison if the question is about mobility and playmaking on the run.

So, yes, we really will be able to answer the question of - was it RT or was it his tools. You'll never get me to call RT a great coordinator no matter what happens because I've seen way too much evidence of bad play calling, but to me his strength was always at bringing scheme, not individual intragame play calling - maybe with way better execution we won't be noticing bad play calls.

Duff, I'm totally with you on Garza - he stinks. Unfortunately so, now, does Kreutz. Let's not just assume Shaffer is a backup - some way to bring him in with the other guys would be great.

How great was it to sit on the sidelines of that sickening repeat of Brett and not even have to waste one brain cell on whether we should be in the running to take him? Ahhhh, the luxury of having

Thanks, Phil, but I cannot claim credit for originating the "drilling" line. It's one I heard several years ago. It just seemed soooo appropriate.

Matt Jones: 65 catches for 761 yards last year with J'Ville. Along with his prediliction to addiction, his yards-per-catch has gone from 15.7 in '06, to 13.2 in '07 to 11.7 last season. Last year's numbers look more like those of a tight end and not an inspiring treand. Speaking of which, da Bears are courting former Lion TE ,Michael Gaines. More of a blocker, I guess, but I wish they'd talk to a wideout. The lack of interest in Marvin Harrison is telling.Apparently, the tread is gone from that tire.

I can see it now. Come mid season, Lovie will be standing the podium Monday morning saying, "Jay is our QB, Jay is our QB".

However, Dave, I'd like to make a suggestion. Your schtick is becoming more predicatable and repetitive:

Take shots at Chicago's QB woes.
Proclaim Bears overrated.
Pimp the Vikings as if they've already won the division.
???
PROFIT!!!

Try something new, Dave. Reach out. How about instead of just trolling a kickass Bears blog, you try to inject some intelligent discussion? How about you just go to a kickass Vikings blog? Oh, that's right, the Vikings don't have any kickass blogs. That sucks, Dave.

I'm tired and I have work to do, so you run along and play nice, Dave.

My point was that Mr. Turner is gonna have to modify his playbook to take advantage of Mr.Cutler's talents. Another thought I had was he could go back in the archives and see what they used when Sid Kamp was QB. Might be able to clarify any confusion he might encounter. Then he could even ask Jay what he thinks would work for him. Oh wait...that's common sense...sorry, I lost my head for a minute .

Report: If “Major Surgery” Isn’t Needed, Favre Will Play For Vikings
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4152783
At this point I'm pretty sure that it's going to happen so I just hope that it happens soon so the back and forth is over with. I think I'm in the minority here that thinks he greatly will improve the Vikings but I hope I'm wrong and at least it won't be the long term answer if I'm right.

#103 The Ghost of Halas said . . .

I'm of the opinion that ESPN jumped the gun on that one. All these rumors and hubbub seems to be artificial. Childress did NOT go have dinner with Favre as ESPN reported. In fact, they just spoke today.

Bus Cook doesn't have any idea what's going on.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d81039545&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true

The NFL is the best source of information, I think. ESPN is just absolutely unreliable on all aspects of football, and I assume other sports. Anybody heard of Bernie Goldberg's book, "Slobbering Love Affair: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media?" ESPN is that exact same thing except insert Brett Favre's name instead of Obama's.

Might happen. Might not. I don't care either way. If Favre goes to the Vikings then he's still a one-year "solution" and Packers fans will scorn him (CANNOT WAIT). The Vikings are still a wretched thuggish team with no Quarterback and the fumblingest Running Back in the league. Oh, did I mention their leading reciever last year was BOBBY WADE? Come on.

I don't know if I'm in the minority here... but...

I love Jeff's writing and perspective... I love the interesting mix of opinions from passionate Bear fans that have a different perspective than I do.

I love intelligent fans of other teams stopping by to discuss the NFL and offer a "outisder" perspective on our team. (thanks Windy City Packer fan)

I understand that people raised in other parts of the country, or by other families like other football teams... and that's cool. The NFL world would be very boring if the Bears were the only football team that had passionate fans.

This brings me to "Dave"... Dave, the Steelers are a great team. They have always been one of my favorite non-Bear teams... especially in the 90's when every year, they would lose their top players to free agency, and still get into the playoffs... Bill Cowher was my favorite coach in the NFL, the Rooney's are great... the team just won the Super Bowl... So, really what are you doing here? Check out this link...

http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/

There are other Steeler fans, they have a blog, some of them probably hate the Bears (God knows why, we're not even AFC) just as much as you. Go talk about the Steelers. Or, please talk about the Bears in some sort of adult matter, like the rest of us do. You don't have to like them, but it would be damn nice of you to try not to turn Jeff's blog into a 2nd grade playground.

Now for everybody... We all the Gay jokes? I realize football is notoriously macho, but haven't most reasonable adults learned to stop hating gays? I mean, as long as history has been recorded, there has been homosexuality... so, it's probably just a part of nature. I think Dave has been acting like an asshole, but I haven't heard anything that makes me think he is a homosexual. And, he won't stop just because one of us calls him gay. That's not helping anything.

I think it's awesome that Jeff has linked up with the Chicago Trib, that's obviously one of the biggest papers in our nation. Obviously they have seen some of the great posts here. But, I'm a little scared and embarrassed if they are reading the comments on here and assuming this blog is always like this.

#107 Windy City Packer Fan said . . .

I would like to weigh in on this one if I may....Ghost, if Favre goes to the Vikings, many Packer fans will simply continue the feelings they already have...he is a prima donna baby that is really in it for himself. Then there are the Favre fans that would blow him even if he killed their dog.

Last year, I went from circling the date and making reservations in Canton for 2012, to wanting to pile up my Favre memorabilia and burn it on my front lawn. I always thought Favre 'loved to play the game,' 'was not like a prima donna athlete,' 'just was a team player.' After last summer's circus, I learned that he is selfish, arrogant and never quite gave up his blankey and bottle.

So, as far as I'm concerned, most of the Packer fans have already been down this road, and wouldn't mind seeing him in a division opponent's jersey so that the team can take a few shots at him.

I don't know Windy City,
You're the resident expert on Packerdom, so I guess I should take your word on the subject.
But I just know how I would feel in that situation. It's one thing wanting to extend your career and playing in an AFC team on the other side of the country, but it is quite another to play in your old team's own division. That is a punch in the teeth. I don't think I could stomach having #4 retired, in that case. But maybe I'm overly dramatic.

I never heard anything useful about that situation. God forbid a beat reporter like Jay fucking Mariotti do some goddamn research. Oh, wait, he's not a beat reporter, he is, in fact, a douche nozzle. Seriously though, Hillenmeyer is not good. He is just as overrated as Rashied Davis. Though, I will say multiple times last season, our entire linebacking corps ran up towards the line of scrimmage on a play action pass and got burnt to a crisp. This needs to stop. What's up. everyone!
Now the buzz seems to be in full effect and I for one can't wait to see if my cowboys will finally last longer than one playoff round! On to the bears, so you want to open the playbook- that's good, but you still need to find a game changing receiver. They serve one huge purpose- make huge plays and make the qb look like a genius for using that play! Now, unfortunately I must say that I don't agree with throwing to the tight end all the time because that will become an easy target for teams to stop. In order to truly spread the offense, you have to get that big target . There are some teams out there that can stop the run without sending 8 to the box and cover very well, so it is crucial that this issue be addressed. Also, be prepared to say good bye to any receiver that just doesn"t have the goods: there's simply not enough time in todays' market to donate alot of years to trying bring someone along, there will always be free agent caliber receivers out there so don't let them go somewhere else, move someone along and bring them in. This business is so competitive and big deals are part of it. This team is moving in the right direction (even though I thought your front office should've gotten Holt for his veteran leadership) so they need to buy one of the last huge pieces. If Chad Johnson stays unhappy in Cincy, your front office needs to make a move if he becomes available. He may love to put on a show, but you can't doubt his playmaking ability and his method of drawing double coverage and still making the play.
