Let me say it without any art: DaBearsBlog is joining ChicagoNow, a local network of sites owned by the Chicago Tribune Media Group.
Now let me explain. A month or so ago, in the wake of the Jay Cutler "tsunami", Noah and I were contacted by a cool guy named Jimmy Greenfield at the Tribune. The company was building a network of Chicago blogs (on every subject imaginable) and they wanted us to be their home for the Chicago Bears. Cool, right? We talked about it and decided it was the right move for the site to make.
Why? There are a lot of reasons. We're going to make some more money, enabling us to spend more time developing a better site. We're also going to be increasing our readership dramatically. As a writer, that's ultimately why you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as it were). You need eyes. And this move is going to bring more to the work.
I am retaining full editorial control of the site. That sentence gets it own paragraph. Well, I guess it actually doesn't, but you get my point.
The Tribune will not have any say in what I write or what you comment. Just don't threaten to kill Obama and we'll be fine. The site - as you know it - will remain unchanged. It'll look different but the process will be the same. I'll post. You'll comment. Same style. Same speed. No bullshit. No interference from anybody else. Even the URL will remain the same and you'll just be redirected to the new site.
You will be asked to register to comment. I'm not thrilled about it but it comes with the territory. Since many of you emailed me last year asking for registration to protect your handles, I don't think it'll be much of a problem. You'll have to register the first time you comment and everything will be simple after that, I promise. What is important to me is that you all register the first day we launch. I've come to know you guys over the years through these handles and I'd like to see them continue.
We signed an initial three-month contract and we're hoping this collaboration extends indefinitely. If the experience for you guys becomes a negative one, we'll terminate the deal this summer. What I want you all to do is email me (jeff@dabearsblog.com) with your reactions as we move forward. Let me know what you like, what you dislike, what works well, what doesn't...etc.
This site is receiving this opportunity because of you guys. I do my thing but it's the consistency and passion from you guys that has helped this site become more than I ever thought it would become. We will not lose our spirit or our edge. We'll continue to write honestly about the organization and the people who cover it, including those employed by the Tribune. We're an Off-Broadway production that's moving uptown. That's all.

#4 jeff said . . .Yeah congratulation Jeff. Thanks for starting this up and making this happen. I'm still iffy on how it will work and feel but I'm all for the shot at it. I'm confident if there was any doubt about the Bears brass hearing about us and our thoughts before they most likely will now. I know Jacksonville Jags have their interns read profootballtalk.com so I wouldn't doubt if the Bears do something similar with theirs to keep up on the local news and opinions.
Now go ahead and get us a WR. I still question Boldin for the cost but he would make us better no doubt.May 4, 2009

I used to read BlogaBull before it became an SBNation blog and it's membership grew so big so fast. So, I've seen the impact that a deal like this can have a "small" blogs. We will get a lot more fans here, some smart, statistical guru's that stay up all night analyzing and crunching numbers to help us understand a players value... and we will add more idiots, that seem to be here just to piss people off.
I've been reading here, and occasionally posting since late in 2006. It really is a great blog, and I enjoy your perspective on things. I seem to usually agree with you, which makes it even more enjoyable for me!
Speaking of which... let's not outthink ourselves here. Anquan Boldin would be a pro bowler on our team. And probably for the next four years. I get that he isn't that fast, but his game doesn't require it.
He doesn't drop that ball. If it's withing the grasp of his fingertips, he catches it. And then he turns upfield, and he heads like a train to the first down marker, or endzone.
I hate that people here are penalizing him for being tough. Yes, he broke his face last year. But, to quote Monty Python "He got better". It's a pretty rare injury, it's not like he has bad knees.
Let's not forget that pre Larry Fitzgerald, in Boldin's rookie year, with Josh McCown at QB! Anquan caught 101 passes for 1,377 yards.
He is a stud. Exactly the kind of player that I want to root for. Tough, Smart, Fundamentally sound, and the way he came back from that injury with a vengeance last year tells me that he loves to play football.

#24 JWilson said . . .Kidron,
There is something possibly as bad as a knee his hip. Just think we need to be VERY cautious what we give up for him (Picks and money)
Cardinals [Cardinals] Questions Swirl Regarding Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin's Hip
As teams look into the possibility of trading for Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin, questions are swirling in league circles regarding whether and to what extent he might have a chronic hip condition that could result in a shorter-than-expected career. Boldin missed some time in 2007 with a hip injury and in six NFL seasons, he has played in all 16 games only twice. So if/when someone swings a trade for Boldin, they might be getting a guy who only has two or three high-end years of production left.

May 4, 2009
#26 BDG said . . .There has to be some truth to the injury concerns for him or
I would think a team like Philly, Baltimore, or the Giants that might have fewer roster concerns than us thus allowing them to take more chances would have jumped at the chance to get him.May 4, 2009
#27 animal said . . .If we could get him for a package that wouldn't costs us too many picks and sign him to a deal that protects us against injury (not a lot guaranteed/bonus) then I would be all for it. I just don't se either of them being logical though.

On the Boldin note: I can't see the Bears doing anything before camp and they get a better look at the WR position.
I'm wondering (and it's been said here before by others) that the coaches are really interested to see what effect Cutler has on the existing WRs and Bennett especially.
Love the site. Congrats again.

#36 Decatur Staleys #7 said . . .Except Oprah's wealth is in Twinkies. Boldin is going to cost, not just in money but draft picks we don't have. If we give up our second rounder next year that puts us picking in rounds 3-7 again. You can find steals and good players in those rounds but 1st and 2nd rounders do pan out more frequently. I really don't see it happening, but I was also one of the people on here saying Cutler was a pipe dream so what do I know.

May 4, 2009
#40 JAB said . . .The uncapped possibility is a very scary thing. I still haven't figured out how it will all work. I would hate to see us lose ground in a hurry on a lot of teams that would be willing to spend what ever on players. I hope it gets resolved and we never see that day.

I'm definitely excited about our rookie WRs... Iglesias, Knox, and Kinder. I think Kinder is the sleeper, hopefully they find a spot for him on the 53. He obviously would have gotten drafted higher if he didn't tear his ACL. I also think he has a chip on his shoulder being a 7th round pick.

#50 The Ghost of Halas said . . .Special guests: Bears quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie watched Friday’s practice, and wide receiver Devin Hester viewed Saturday’s session.
“Of course, the door’s always open for them to stop by,” Smith said. “They want to see what some of their possible teammates look like. Jay is blending in and has become one of the guys, just showing support as much as anything for some of the guys, and Devin’s a gym rat. He got a good workout in on his own. This is a day that the [veteran] players are off, and he’s out here working out trying to get better.”
I like the sound of Devin Hester working out and trying to get better.
Anyone else really impressed with Eddie Royal last season? Some of this smooth transition to the Pros has to be attributed to Jay Cutler. This bodes well for us. I truly believe he will make Hester, Bennett, and even Forte better. Hopefully he will do the same with these rookies!

I am a long time daily reader and sometimes poster. This site is by far..... far.... the best Bears site and one of better team sites in US.
What we all want, I suspect, is for you to keep the site pretty much as it is and, for you to make some buckos. That would be perfect. I get a little scared of "corporate leadership" based on personal experiences.
I hope you are able to keep it the totally free forum that it is and has been. For example, "Dave," the moron who chooses to use our site. Obviously, he is demented, knows nothing and can't even spell. The only thing he knows a lot about, most likely, is masturbation. But that is another story. The totally open and free site is one of the things that has made dabearsblog great. So, even "Dave" should be tolerated. (Tolerated.)
One of the things that has made the site great is the totally open policy . (I am a college professor and know about "minimal censoring.") The other is your great writing and serious insights about what shakes.
Anyway, speaking as a fanatical Bears fan of 30 years and dedicate daily site reader for 5 or 6 (or something?), Congrats. Keep site same. Make some bucks. God bless.

Well now there is 'official' confirmation of this site's value. Way to go Jeff! And way to go all you glib, funny, well-informed, sometimes vulgar and always entertaining Bear fan contributers.
I love that the Bears have a bonified top 10 QB, but have not forgot who brung them to the dance (monster D-linemen). They have one possible 'monster' in 2nd year man Harrison and possibly 2 more in this years draft. Trying to find the next Richard Dent(rd. 7?), I got no problem with that.
Coach em up Marinelli! Can I kick the still un-employed Grossman one more time for losing the SB? I can't blame JA no more for making Lovie start Rex, JA brought in Cutler. He is totally vindicated IMO now.

#84 Ditka Forever said . . .Well I'm a bit late to yesterday's party, but I'll add my heartfelt congratulations to you, Jeff, my good friend whom I've never met, it was apparently only a matter of time before the amazing thing you've created got its due. You deserve every bit of this, and hopefully, if the world works as it should, this should have trickledown benefits to your real job as well - you will become more well known, as will your plays.
This is my favorite thread in a long time - why? - because all the faithful have shown up, some names I haven't seen in a while - read the posters on this thread and see the Who's Who of Da Bears Blog - great to see everybody together at once!
So now the cautionary part of this (have to love Rancid's typical terse but oh so real response)
With expansion comes risk. The consequences of the risk are simply becoming what all the other blogs are like. You've read em, you know what I'm talking about. An occasional decent conversation that surprises you amidst the one line flame banter ad nauseum. How will we stop that from happening on a no-rules (well, one rule) site? I can only hope that the inevitable legions of newcomers will read first and get in the spirit of what this site is about.
The other thing I'll vote for is as few stylistic changes as possible - you said the style will change - does it have to? I love the easy-to-read format with the big names and space to breathe - none of the normal sectioned-off Reuters-style of the other Bears blogs I have seen - I know we can live with style changes, we'll get used to anything, but I for one vote KEEP IT THE SAME! I know how strange it was a few weeks ago when the style turned all bold - hated it! And that was just making it bold! I know, I'm sounding super picky, just saying.
Bottom line, I'm a Bearimist (remember that?) - I'm willing to go with an "IT'S ALL GOOD" Love that you're getting some scratch to go with it too.
Prefontaine, loved the Swingers quote!
Foxtrot Tango, how stupid am I, that it was just two days ago I realized your name meant something more than just some military alphabet words? (Answer - pretty stupid)
Mikeb - I have the same Websense at work, you just put a mighty fear in meShout out to Bill from SATX - our Bears brother and my good friend was called up AGAIN to Iraq, he was less than a year from getting out entirely - baby on the way too. Check in Bill, love you man, keep safe!

Simeon Rice Still Wants To Play Football.Rice said that he called new Bucs coach Raheem Morris about rejoining the team. Rice said that other teams, including the Bears, are interested. He only wants a workout, not to be signed. And he thinks something could happen fairly soon.
I just watched him on Pro's Vs. Joe's last night and he looked in great shape is very fast for his size and even showed decent hands foe a DE hehe. I would love to bring him in for a try out.
Also:The New England Patriots have landed a new safety with a reputation as a rugged tackler as former Chicago Bears starter Brandon McGowan struck a two-year deal with the AFC East club, according to John Clayton of ESPN.com. Kinda sad I liked this kid but could never stay healthy. Now of course since the Pats got him he will go to the pro-bowl or something.

It is really scary to look at our WR roster. You know that if you consider Hester a KR/PR as the Bears do on the roster, if we cut Davis (fingers crossed) our most experienced and seasoned vet at WR.. is Brandon Rideau. Your saying holy shit and looking it up aren't you. What a bare cupboard, I sure as shit hope Bennett and these rooks learn fast.

Now i am not saying i dont see the injury problems he had and I am not even saying that injuries aside he would have been the answer but its not like we are flush with safeties. May 5, 2009
#110 From Brazil said . . .Honestly if we are banking on McGowan being the savior we need, over a converted Corner, than we were screwed anyways. other than his Interception against #4, what did he do?
nothing of note that i can remember. i distinctly remember myself and other Bears fans, groaning severely when we saw 36 on the field.
quite sure he'll lead the league in S interceptions this year though, now that he's a Pat.back to the receiver need, Browns signed Mike Furrey today

Instead of "Everyone Gets A Trophy Day" it might turn out to be "Everyone Gets To Try Out As A Safety Day"
I know Brown's history of injuries were a major deterrent to keeping him around but I have to wonder if JA ever talked to Brown about a lighter contract with incentives that would have shown him the money if he made it a full season. Hate to lose that experience.

I'm just saying Kevin Payne is a Safety, isn't he? he hits, and he needs to work on wrapping up... so whats the difference.
we will miss Mike Brown though, a lot, just his presence alone.
May 6, 2009
#117 BDG said . . .No McGowan was a UFA. I was hoping we would bring him back more than Brown because of his age and he did show some skill when he was healthy but oh well moving on. What's this new talk about moving Graham to Safety? I think that is fucking nuts. Corey Graham is the best corner we have on this team I think. They are going to screw up his development at corner by moving him around. I think he could handle FS but I think he could be an elite corner which is usually harder to find except for the Chicago Bears. Move Bowman there try Steltz at FS, try Earl at FS try fucking Rashied Davis at FS but leave Corey Graham alone.

#142 BearsTransplant said . . .No way Massaquoi gets cut. Stallworth is going to jail. Edwards is being shopped and I haven't heard of anyone else on that list of receivers other than Steptoe.
And I was wrong saying McGowan was cut, he was an UFA, but I still think we were to thin to not make an attempt to sign him.
The difference between McGowan and Payne is that Payne is our starting SS and we need someone to play FS. I realize McGowan is more the strong type, but we are running out of options here. At least he has played safety in the NFL before. (although so has Danieal Manning, so maybe I spoke to soon)
I just don't think we should be closing the doors on options at that position. Watch, the Pats will make him great.
May 6, 2009
#143 Dave said . . .The knock on Mass is that he doesn't catch very well. I don't think anyone in the Browns organization thinks that Mass has more potential than Edwards, who also don't catch well. I could be wrong. At 50th overall, you're probably right.
Oh, I have heard that Edwards is a collosal douche, and a total prima-donna for who football is a means to an end (stardom). I'd rather now see him here, considering we've got a relatively high-character team by NFL standards. The same goes for Plaxico "I fake injuries to get out of practice" Burress, and Matt "Doing rails in a parked car" Jones. Boldin or nobody.
May 6, 2009
#144 mikebdot said . . .Mikebdot-You mean like Micheal Jordan. He cried when he retired, and then came back. I guess he was human joke also, right dumbass.

You can talk about Favre crying all you want. Just means you'll be getting your ass kicked by a fucking cry baby.
Big bad Bears.

#145 mikebdot said . . .Deflect all you want Dave, but eat shit while doing it.
Jordan is a basketball god, but, yes, I consider him a joke of a human being. I'm glad you agree Favre is a joke of a human being. You can argue to you are blue in the face he is an NFL god, but he did not dominate a single season in his entire career, let alone 6 consecutive full seasons on his way to title. What did Favre do when he returned? Sucked unbelievable ass. Good for him. Couldn't have happened to a better guy. He needs to crawl back into a prescription drug bottle.
May 6, 2009
#146 Joseph said . . .And to clarify, the Packers '96 defense was the best defense in the entire league. They are quite possibly the most underrated defensive unit in the history of the NFL. They were lucky Favre was addicted to drugs at the time.

He was a good football player. But if he comes back a second time and in the Packers' own division he is absolutely the most colossal asshole in the history of football...even worse than Bobby Petrino and Ryan Leaf combined.

#172 Urlacher FTW said . . .Foxtrot Tango Packers-Like it or not Cuntler will be a big disappointment.
This guy is such an asshole and loner that Denver couldn't wait to get rid of his ass.
Shanahan is on record saying Cuntler is an attitude adjustment away from a being a good QB, not a great QB.
Like I said earlier, Chicago got taken to the cleaners. Then again getting taken for a ride in QB trades seem to be what your front office is great at.
But don't worry, Rex should still be available in November.
May 7, 2009
#173 BDG said . . .The Cutler trade will work out for Chicago. If for no other reason than because of the cost to acquire him, they are absolutely committed to starting him now. No QB competitions, no folding to fan pressure, no silly speculation about who the starter should have been. All that is gone now and Chicago is forced to start him and leave him there for the next 3 years at least. That fact alone stabilizes our QB position without even asking about his talent or speculating his performance.
Favre to Minnesota does the absolute opposite; while he may make them immediately better at the QB position, regular season anyway, Favre struggles in the playoffs. He will stifle the development of Rosenfels or Jackson or any young QB they could bring in to be the future. Even if he can find some old magic it will be a one year and done type deal for his personal vendetta and hurt your future at QB, a welcome to the QB derby every year would be in order.
May 7, 2009
#171 Anonymous- Why don't you back that up with some evidence. Where is this quote from Shannahan?
Besides Rick Mirer years ago what other Qb have we got taken for a ride on?
If Cutler is such a loner how come he has been at every meeting/team activity (including the rookie 3 days that he can't even participate) often staying late. Yea sounds like a total dick.
If your going to talk shit come with some facts.
Like Urlacher FTW said 1st of all he improves us by finally solidifying the position. Beyond that like him or not for his attitude you can't deny his skills. He has an amazing arm and a very quick release so he will make our wr's better, and if they aren't good enough he is good enough to make great FA wr's want to play with him. He will ALWAYS have a 1,000 yard wr if they have the talent.May 7, 2009
